From Sharon’s desk
Its been a busy time with Stage 2 students enjoying an overnight excursion to Wambangalang Field Studies Centre with 3 trips being held over the past 2 weeks. Stage 3 students have left on the first of 2 excursions to Sydney for 3 days. The students were very excited when they left on Monday morning and were looking forward to experiencing the sites of Sydney. Some great learning activities full of fun to be had.. District Athletics was held last Friday. We had a great day with many personal records broken and students performing their best. Our students were very well behaved and involved at all levels. Well done to the whole team and especially those who have been selected to represent the Dubbo District at the Western Area Carnival on 1st September. The team will be announced later this week. Congratulations to Will Cuthill who was awarded Senior Boy Champion and Zac Miller 11yrs Boys Champion. Great job Mr Tarry, the team manager and our parents who supported our team on the day and worked in the canteen. NAPLAN online will be carried out between 14th August and 22nd September. The readiness test is a ‘practice run’ for schools to participate in a trial NAPLAN online. Education Ministers have agreed that NAPLAN will move online by 2019. This readiness test is not an assessment of student ability—students in Years 3 and 5 have already completed their NAPLAN tests. This experience will just offer students the opportunity to experience the online testing environment. Year 3 and 5 students will sit a literacy/numeracy online assessment. Not all students will sit the test simultaneously. Remember this is a readiness test only! For further information please look at http://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/naplan-online Staff Development day will be held this Saturday with staff working from 9.00am to 3.00pm looking at the English syllabus in depth to apply and program across all classes and students. This day will be in lieu of a staff development day at the end of the year.
Book Week will be celebrated next week. Mrs Buttrey has done a wonderful job organising activities across the week. See you there. Please see further details on page 2. Schools Plus—Fair Education is a philanthropic organisation who donate money to worthwhile projects.. A cluster group of primary schools from Dubbo were successful in receiving a large grant to drive the Inquiry Based Learning across our schools—feeding into the College AVID program. Dubbo South has successfully run and is intending to expand Inquiry Based Learning classes for 2018. South now has four classes, 2 in Stage 2 and 2 in Stage 3 where teachers drive learning through projects for students around their interests. Engagement in learning is high which has been shown by improved outcomes. I would like to develop staff in this area and expand this project to provide more stu-dents with this method of learning if suitable. Displays have been conducted throughout the year during Expo days showing these projects. I will keep you informed of the grant and project as it grows. Have a great week, Sharon Murray, Principal.

Girls Touch On Tuesday the boys and girls touch teams played Cudgegong Valley Public School. The boys score at full time was 4-4 then they went to drop off and it was down to 3 vs 3 players. Ted, Will and Rome were the three players in the drop off, Ted made a break and scored the winning try. The girls had a really tough game and sadly lost 5-2. A special thanks to
Cudgegong valley public school for travelling to Dubbo for the games.
Rugby Union
The boy’s Rugby Union team went to Armidale to play King-
scliff Public School. The boys were down 14-7 at half-time.
But the boys didn’t give up and kept playing their hardest.
The score at full time was 33-33, but the rules are the team
that scores the first try wins and we did so we now are
going to Sydney to play in the State Finals at the end of
August. Special thanks to John Raidaveta, Shaun Barker and
the other parents for accompanying us.
Boys and Girls Basketball The boys team have progressed to the PSSA Basketball knockout finals following a withdrawal from Alma PS. The finals will be held in Bathurst next Friday 25th August. The girls basketball team will play Burke Ward PS at Cobar next Thursday 24th August. If the girls win this match they will join the boys team in Bathurst. We wish the girls all the best on their road to the finals. We are expecting a tough match.
Wambangalang Excursions Last week students from 3/4D and 3/4T travelled on a bus to Wambangalang Field Studies Centre. We took our suitcases to the dorms where we slept the night. We had a great time and were kept busy with lots of activities. The first thing we did was to make a worm farm using milk bottles, dirt and newspaper. We then added rotten banana peels on top and then added the worms. Brookes favourite activity was the ‘dip netting’. We went down to the dam and then used nets to catch insects from the water. We then had to identify the insects from a sheet given to us by one of the teachers. Giang loved bike riding through the bush. We rode for a couple of hours. Some of the children saw kangaroos, however we didn’t. We also had lessons in the classroom where we looked at different things through the microscope. It was great fun! Brooke Matthews & Giang Hoang
STEM Workshop Last week some Stage 2 & 3 students had visitors from Newcastle University come to talk to us about some STEM based competitions that we could enter into. I learned a lot about statistics and how they help us to record data. One competition was to build an electric solar
powered car using some special kits that we got to play with. The other competition was a poster competition about anything of our choice, I chose Sci Fi. I liked how they showed us examples of what we could create and I’m excited to create my own poster to enter the competition next Term. Latana Eulo-Gibbs (5/6S)
