2 Overview

HSPA+ introduces downlink 64QAM in 3GPP Release 7. Downlink 64QAM is a new higher-order modulation scheme. Theoretically, downlink 64QAM can provide a peak rate of 21 Mbit/s for a single UE.

Downlink 64QAM enables UEs with favorable channel conditions to download HSDPA data athigher rates, improving the spectral efficiency and user experience.

Table 2-1 lists the requirements of downlink 64QAM.

Table 2-1 Requirements of downlink 64QAM

Item Requirement

CN The CN needs to support 3GPP Release 7.

RNC 64QAM depends on downlink enhanced L2, which requires the RNC to supportflexible RLC PDU sizes. The RNC also needs to control the use of 64QAM during RB setup, reconfiguration, and handover.

NodeB The NodeB needs to select a modulation scheme (64QAM or non-64QAM) forevery TTI through TFRC selection.

UE The UE needs to support HS-DSCH category 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 23, 24, 27, 28,or later.

For details about HS-DSCH categories, see 3GPP TS 25.306.

3.1 Basic Principle3GPP Release 5 introduced 16QAM to increase the single-user peak rate and system capacity.3GPP Release 7 introduced 64QAM, which was an enhancement of 16QAM.

With downlink 64QAM, a higher order modulation technology than 16QAM can be used whenthe channel quality is good. Theoretically, 64QAM supports a peak data rate of 21 Mbit/s overthe Uu interface and increases the average throughput of the system.

Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) introduced in the HSDPA enables adaptation ofmodulation and coding to varying radio conditions.

Figure 3-1 shows the modulation schemes for HSPA+.

Figure 3-1 Modulation schemes for HSPA+

As shown in Figure 3-1, the data capacity (unit: bits/symbol) of 16QAM is 2 times that of QPSK.The data capacity of 64QAM is 1.5 times that of 16QAM. Therefore, 64QAM can provide highertransmission rates on the Uu interface.

Using the 64QAM mode in the downlink of HSPA+ enables each symbol to carry six bits.

In RAN11.0, a UE cannot use MIMO and 64QAM simultaneously. When both of them aresupported, the parameter MIMOor64QAMSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) specifies whether touse MIMO or 64QAM.

3.2 Downlink 64QAM Selection

ProcessFigure 3-2 shows the process of downlink 64QAM selection.

Page 9: Downlink 64QAM(RAN15.0_01)

Figure 3-2 Process of downlink 64QAM selection

As shown in Figure 3-2, downlink 64QAM selection is determined by the RNC, NodeB, andUE. The selection process is as follows:

1. Based on the traffic class and radio bearer scheme, the RNC determines whether toconfigure downlink 64QAM for the UE. If the RNC determines to configure downlink64QAM, it instructs the NodeB to allocate resources for the UE.

2. Based on the CQI, power resource, and code resource, the TFRC selection function of theNodeB determines whether to use downlink 64QAM and notifies the UE of the resultthrough the HS-SCCH in each TTI.

For details about TFRC selection, see HSDPA Feature Parameter Description. This sectionmainly describes the changes in TFRC selection for downlink 64QAM.

3. The UE uses downlink 64QAM if the NodeB determines to use downlink 64QAM and theUE supports downlink 64QAM.

In other words, the RNC determines whether the UE can be configured with downlink 64QAMand the NodeB determines when the UE can use downlink 64QAM.

Radio Bearers

During the service setup procedure, the RNC configures downlink 64QAM for the UE accordingto the radio bearer scheme. Downlink 64QAM can be selected if the following conditions aremet.

l Downlink 64QAM and downlink enhanced L2 are supported by the network and the UE,and both of them are activated.

To activate downlink 64QAM, select 64QAM of the HspaPlusSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter, and CFG_HSDPA_64QAM_SWITCH of theCfgSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter.

To activate downlink enhanced L2, select DL_L2ENHANCED of the HspaPlusSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter.

l The service type is PS streaming service or PS BE service.l The downlink HS-DSCH and uplink E-DCH/DCH are selected as transport channels.l The MIMOor64QAMSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter is set to 64QAM, or MIMO

is not activated.

In the case of combined services, if one of the combined services meets the conditions of applyingthe downlink 64QAM, the combined services is configured with downlink 64QAM.

TFRC SelectionThe TFRC selection function of the NodeB MAC-ehs can dynamically select QPSK, 16QAM,or 64QAM for transmission based on the channel conditions and available transmissionresources on the Uu interface. For the UEs with favorable channel conditions, the TFRC selectionfunction applies 64QAM to increase the data rates. For the UEs with unfavorable channelconditions, the TFRC selection function applies QPSK or 16QAM to implement lower-speedtransmission and to ensure the transmission quality.

The CQI, available power, and number of HS-PDSCH codes have impacts on modulationscheme selection.

After a service is set up on the HS-DSCH, the UE has to monitor the HS-SCCHs in each TTIand report CQIs periodically even if there is no data on the HS-DSCH.

The data of the UE is scheduled or handled by TFRC only after the NodeB receives the CQIsfrom the UE.

For details about TFRC selection, see HSDPA Feature Parameter Description. The HS-SCCHis selected in a special way when downlink 64QAM is enabled. For details, see 3GPP TS 25.212.

Modulation Information Transmission Through HS-SCCHDownlink 64QAM uses HS-SCCH type 1 to transmit HSDPA control information, includingthe modulation scheme. The HS-SCCH format in downlink 64QAM is similar to that beforedownlink 64QAM is introduced. The only difference is that the meaning of the modulationscheme field is changed.

Before the introduction of 64QAM, the modulation scheme (QPSK or 16QAM) is indicated bythe Modulation Scheme Information field of the HS-SCCH.

After the introduction of 64QAM, the modulation scheme (QPSK or QAM) is also indicated bythe Modulation Scheme Information field. If QAM is selected, the modulation scheme (16QAMor 64QAM) is further indicated by the last bit of the Channelization Code-Set Information field. For details, see section "Coding for HS-SCCH type 1" in 3GPP TS 25.212.

Table 3-1 lists the HS-SCCH changes for 64QAM.

5 Network Impact

System CapacityDownlink 64QAM can increase the downlink peak data rate of the Uu interface to 21 Mbit/s fora single UE and increase system capacity when the channel quality is favorable. Downlink64QAM can increase the average system throughput by 7% to 14% compared with 16QAMusing the same bandwidth.

Network PerformanceDownlink 64QAM improves the system resource utilization.

When downlink 64QAM is enabled for UEs with favorable channel quality to transmit data, thecode and power resource utilization can be improved.

6 Engineering Guidelines

6.1 When to Use Downlink 64QAMDownlink 64QAM can increase the downlink network capacity at low network upgrade costs. When Ior/Ioc is greater than 10 dB, downlink 64QAM provides a large link performance gaincompared with 16QAM if Type3 receivers are used. Therefore, downlink 64QAM isrecommended in areas where the CQI for a UE is greater than 25.

Downlink 64QAM applies to all networking scenarios. It provides a throughput gain of about5% to 10% in macro networks and about 15% to 20% in micro networks.

6.2 Required Informationl Proportion of 64QAM UEs on the live network

A higher proportion of 64QAM UEs results in better system throughput gains.

The VS.HSDPA.UE.Mean.CAT13.14 counter provides the average number of DC-HSDPA UEs.

l Uplink capabilities

If DC-HSDPA UEs use DCHs in the uplink, the downlink peak data rates of DC-HSDPAUEs are restricted, reducing system throughput gains. HSUPA is recommended on theuplink for DC-HSDPA.

To check whether HSUPA is enabled on the uplink, see HSUPA Feature ParameterDescription.

l Iub bandwidth

If Iub bandwidth is restricted, 64QAM cannot provide significant gains. It is recommendedthat you configure the Iub bandwidth based on actual requirements when deploying64QAM.

After 64QAM is enabled, the maximum downlink peak throughput of a single user canreach 21 Mbit/s. To guarantee the Iub transmission efficiency, the minimum Iub bandwidthsrequired for IP transmission and ATM transmission are 25 MHz and 28 MHz, respectively. The actual required Iub bandwidth is greater than 25 or 28 MHz because there are R99

users on the live network. The actual Iub bandwidth for commercial use must be calculatedbased on network planning and network optimization.

l Packet loss rate on the CN side

If the packet loss rate on the CN side is high, gains provided by 64QAM decrease duringsingle-thread FTP sessions. The recommended packet loss rate over the Iu interface on theCN side is less than one of a million.

l Mean throughput for one HSDPA cell and HSDPA call drop ratio

The two KPIs are collected to observe the impacts of the function of starting the compressedmode for HSDPA services on network KPIs.

l VS.HSDPA.64QAM.UE.Mean.Cell: Number of HSDPA 64QAM RABs SetupSuccessfully for cell

This feature helps increase cell throughput. To determine the average HSDPA throughput andtotal downlink throughput before and after Downlink 64QAM is activated, view the followingcounters:

l VS.HSDPA.MeanChThroughput: Mean Downlink Throughput of single HSDPA MAC-dFlows

This counter provides the average throughput of HSDPA services in the cell.

l VS.DataOutput.Mean: Average cell throughput at the MAC-hs/MAC-ehs layerl VS.HSDPA.64QAMCfg.Acted.Traffic: Traffic of Mac-ehs PDUs correctly transmitted by

64QAM users in 64QAM mode in a celll VS.HSDPA.64QAMCfg.Traffic: Traffic of Mac-ehs PDUs correctly transmitted by all

64QAM users in a cell

After this feature is activated, the values of VS.HSDPA.MeanChThroughput andVS.DataOutput.Mean increase.

Impacts on Network PerformanceYou need to monitor the mean throughput for one HSDPA cell and the HSDPA call drop ratio. If the mean throughput for one HSDPA cell decreases or the HSDPA call drop ratio increasesafter Downlink 64QAM is enabled, run the RNC MML command SET UCMCF with the CMPermission Ind on HSPA+ parameter set to FALSE(Forbidden).
