At the Junior-Senior High School, each month we highlight students who positively contribute to the
school by being respectful and responsible leaders. With addition of the 6th grade to our building, we
are pleased to now honor 4 students each month. April Top Dawgs are Conner Stevens, Kya Hack-
ett, Lydia Erickson, and Tyler Reed. Congratulations, kids! Keep up the good work!
Top Dawgs are rewarded with the privilege of being first in lunch line for the month, an “academic
incentive” in one class, and a $1 a la carte ticket.
Conner is always willing to put in extra work and help in whatever way that he can. He is respectful,
helpful, and pleasant. Conner takes his time and does a good job when working.
Kya is a hard worker and always strives for excellence in the classroom. She is great at problem-
solving and working with team members to get a job done.
Lydia is a kind, hardworking, and positive student. She gives her best effort in everything she does.
Tyler is a hardworking, dedicated, and kind student. He puts forth the effort necessary to do well in
class.
The Riverside TeamMates
Program is wrapping up an-
other successful year! Our
mentors and students have
enjoyed meeting, talking,
sharing and laughing with
each other and in a couple weeks, we will be celebrating the end of
the school year with a Pizza Party at Buck Snort.
I interviewed another student about what it means to have a men-
tor. This student is in the 6th grade at Riverside, and he and his
mentor have been together since 4th grade. They meet and have
lunch together almost every week during the school year. When
asked about what he likes about his mentor, the student said, “My
mentor is always interested in what is going on in my life. He lis-
tens to me and tries to help me solve any problems that I’m hav-
ing. Sometimes we tell each other jokes. I love it when he comes
to visit me; it’s great having him to talk to!”
The Riverside TeamMates Mentoring Program has been extremely
successful, thanks to the awesome mentors and students who par-
ticipate. All of the 6th grade students who requested a mentor
have been matched with one. Our next goal is to get going with
the students who will be 6th graders next year, but that means we
need more mentors. If you can spare about 30 - 35 minutes a
week to spend with a Riverside student, please contact Jana Hens-
ley ([email protected]) or Lisa Putnam
([email protected]). Or for more information, go to

A special thank you to Angela Fritz for her generous donation to
the Riverside Libraries in honor of her grandmother Janis Dober-
necker. On April 2nd Janis Dobernecker would have been 90. She
had nine grandkids, eight of which were girls and she always very
much stressed the importance of empowering women and building
each other up. She always stressed the importance of literacy and
education, so this donation is made in her honor to commemorate
her birthday.

Reynolds Report (Mandie Reynolds, 6-12 Principal)
The school year is winding down, and we’re ready to celebrate Seniors’
graduation and their accomplishments. We will have Seniors’ last day on
Tuesday, May 14th, with graduation practice on Wednesday, May 15th.
Class night will also be the 15th at 7:00pm in the Auditorium. Graduation
will then be Sunday, May 21st, at 2:00pm in the Jr./Sr. High School gym.
For the rest of the High School students, finals will take place on Wednes-
day, May 22nd, and Thursday, May 23rd, with the last day of school being
Friday, May 24th.
One of the greatest things for me this year has been our Monday Morning
Meetings as they have served as a forum to discuss important topics, re-
view expectations, and recognize outstanding things that our students are
doing every day. Our staff spotlight last month was Tim White, who stu-
dents recognize as a great role model in our district both as a bus driver
and as a substitute teacher. Bulldogs of the week recognized were Cienna
Sorensen, Dennis Pilling, and Dustin Hering.
As the year winds down, I want to say thank you to everyone who continu-
ally supports Riverside each year, whether it's volunteering at an event,
cheering from the stands, or purchasing goods from a fundraiser, we could
not make it work without the help of so many. Thank you for your sup-
port today and every day!

Joyce Isaacson from Farm Bureau provided a lesson to our first graders on plants. After students learned
about plant parts and growing basics, they were able to plant their own grass ‘chia pet’ complete with a face
and ready to grow grass seed. Thanks, Joyce and Farm Bureau! (Alison Henry article and photos)
Kindergarten spent this quarter learning about forces and motion. At the end of our unit, the kindergartners
went bowling to experience the motion of the bowling ball down the lane, bouncing off bumpers to change
direction and finally knocking down the pins. Students were excited to tie what they had learned into a fun
and engaging field trip. A special thank you is given to Riverside Principal's Cabinet for funding the trip,
Thunder Bowl for hosting us, and to the Riverside staff who chaperoned our trip. This experience would not
be possible without your support! (Rachel Gunderson article and photos)

On Tuesday, April 2nd the Preschool classes attended a fun day of learning at Iowa Western Community College.
Every year, the students at IWCC put on a Health and Safety Fair for local preschool students. College students
teach elementary students about topics that come up in their every
day lives such as first aid, fire safety, sign language, shoe tying, traffic
safety, stranger danger, recycling and so much more! The day ended
with a skills demonstration by the IWCC cheer squad in which the
preschoolers even got to try some of the moves. A fun time was had
by all! (Lindsey Henderson article and photos)

Riverside 5th graders participated in a Conservation Poster Contest
earlier this spring. This year’s theme was “Life in the Soil: Dig
Deeper”. The East Pottawattamie Soil & Water Conservation Dis-
trict Education Coordinator, Paige Volkens, is pictured with the
second–place winner, Adaline Martens. (Paige Volkens article and
photos) We also thank Ashley Houser for bringing to our attention.
Riverside Intermediate School was visited by the Water Rocks program from Iowa State University.
The students learned about soil conservation and ways to help the Earth through games and song.

The 8th - 11th graders had the opportunity to attend an "Electives Fair" in the
Commons recently. Staff and students leaders shared the positive experiences
offered to students by taking electives in high school. This was the first time we've
hosted this type of event, and thanks to Mrs. Kallsen for the idea and to all staff for
helping make it happen (Mrs. Reynolds) We thank the yearbook staff for the pic-
tures shared in this issue.

On April 11th, Riverside 2nd graders participated in a nationwide Earth Day Groceries Pro-
ject. The East Pottawattamie Soil & Water Conservation District Education Coordinator,
Paige Volkens, handed out paper grocery bags from Ruback’s for students to draw environ-
mental messages on. Customers will receive these student-designed grocery bags back on
Earth Day, April 22. (Paige Volkens article and photo)

The inaugural Riverside FFA awards banquet was held on March 29, 2019, in the commons at the junior-senior high school. Prior to the meal, there was a silent auction of
various goods. Following the meal, awards were handed out in the auditorium. It was a night to recognize FFA members as well as community members who have sup-
ported the local FFA chapter. Jake Kvaal and Todd Williams received honorary chapter degrees. Tyler Johannsen is the chapter sponsor.

During the recent flooding, Riverside students and community members banded together to show that Riverside cares by donating many cases of bot-
tled water as well as some cash. We thank all that helped us to make that happen.
The June Newsletter may come later than usual
due to the end of the school year. We will report
of Prom, Graduation, and other end-of-the-school
year events.
