    Concept

Crisis of the Super-Verse is an innovative and strategic new take on the fighting genre crossed

with the stylistic appeal and popularity of comic book heroes. Choose from a variety of fighters

each representing a historic era of comics, and battle it out with your friends either in the same

room or online. With an innovative tug-of-war fighting system, and a unique new control style,

Crisis of the Super-Verse will keep you fighting for hours.

    Context

In 1938 a man revealed to the public the amazing and tremendous powers that he possessed.

Unlike Platos Gyges, this man used his powers for the good of the people. He was a hero, and

quickly others began to appear as well. Where ever the American Public needed them they werethere, and when our soldiers went to war they followed suit.

In the 1950s a new threat arose, filling the void that was left by the war. Monsters and

murderers were becoming the norm throughout the country. The public became suspicious and

fearful of anyone out of place or unnatural, including the heroes they once looked up to. To

appease the people the Heroes created a system through which to police themselves. Despite this

many heroes fell out of the public grace and quickly resigned their mission for good.

By the 1960s a new wave of heroes where arising. These heroes lacked the unquestioning

resolve of the previous generation. These heroes had worries and were capable of mistakes. They

    were heroes and human.

By the 1970s heroes and citizens began to question how effective their tactics were really being.

They could fight giant robots and aliens, but could the fight drug addiction or poverty? And

moral relativism was turning out to be a greater weakness than any radioactive meteor.

  • 7/30/2019 Crisis Design Doc

    4/44

This then lead to disillusionment of the heroes in the 1980s. Many thought that if they hoped to

truly be effective they would have to drastically change their tactics. They became proactive,

hunting down wronging doing to dole out justice that looked more like punishment. Some simply

retired. Then again some came out of retirement.

This mentality only became more combative by the 1990s. The heroes that arose now sawthemselves only as soldiers. They fought a war against an increasingly ill-defined enemy. The

line between our heroes and our villain was blurred beyond recognition was often considered

inconsequential, while the line between the heroes and citizens grew thick. Actions were

conducted with no regard for how theyll could affect the people they were supposedly intending

    to protect.

Now the American people are more politically polarized than they have been in the last 25 years.

The greatest enemy to the American people as far as we think is other American people, those

that think on the opposite end of the spectrum. This is no different for our heroes. They have

their own opinions and views just as our people do. They fight over how to save us rather thansaving us. Our heroes are at war.

    Gameplay

Crisis of the Super-Verse introduces a different control system and health system than ever seen

in a fighting game, which causes it to give gameplay a new feel away from the typical button-mashing based control scheme that most fighting games already have.

    Unique Combat Controls

The melee system uses a very different controls system then those seen in previous games within

the fighting genre. Most games in the genre use multiple inputs for the various kinds of attacks

  • 7/30/2019 Crisis Design Doc

    5/44

despite the commonalities of the attacks. This system is based off of older ones in which inputs

are assigned for high, middle and low versions of the standard punch and kick attacks. Instead in

this system only the right bumper is used for all three versions of the standard punch. As well the

left bumper is used for all three versions of the kick attack. This is done through the use of the

right analog stick. The possible positions of the analog stick are broken into 6 sections. Aiming

the analog sticks towards your opponent in conjunction with either the punch or kick button does

a standard version of this attack. Aiming the stick to the top corner towards your enemy does a

high version, and the same is the case for aiming in the bottom corner that is toward your enemy.

Aiming in the opposite direction of your enemy does something different depending on your

    attack.

    1) Punches- are accomplishedby holding the right bumper and

    flicking the right joystick. Punches

do damage and knock-back to an

    opponent.

    a) Jab Punches- is doneby holding the right bumper and

flicking the right joystick toward the

    opponent. Jab Punches do less

    damage and have less knock-back

    than Strong Punches.

    a. High Jab- isdone by holding the right bumper and

flicking in the direction of the enemy

in an upward direction. High Jabshave a greater knock-back in the y

    direction than in the x.

    b. Middle Jab-is done by holding the right bumper and flicking in the direction of the enemy in a

center direction. Middle Jabs have a greater knock-back in the x direction than in the

    y.

    c. Low Jab- is done by holding the right bumper and flicking in the direction of theenemy in a downward direction. Middle Jabs have a knock-back in the negative y

    direction, pushing them down.

    b) Strong Punches- is done by holding the right bumper and flicking the right joystick awayfrom the opponent. Strong Punches do greater damage and have greater knock-back than

    Strong Punches.

    a. High Jab- is done by holding the right bumper and flicking in the opposite directionof the enemy in an upward direction. High Jabs have a greater knock-back in the y

    direction than in the x.

    Tug-of-War Health System

Instead of using the typical fighting game health bars, Crisis of the Super-Verse uses a

new tug-of-war style health system. Characters share a large health bar, instead of each having

their own personal bar, which contains a Combat Compass that goes back and forth to indicatewho is currently winning the fight. The more damage you inflict on an opponent, the farther you

push the marker all the way to your opponents side, ensuring victory. When a player is currently

in control of the combat, as in have successfully made a series of hits against their enemy, the

compass will rotate to point towards their enemy. If this player does more damage to their

enemy, then the compass with move along the Victory Meter toward their enemys side of the

    GUI.

The players also have a resolve meterthat acts as a last reserve of health. When the

Conflict Compass is pushed all the way to their side, that characters resolve meterwill start to

drain until it is empty, causing them to lose. Unlike the other aspect of the health system the

resolve health does not regenerate. Giving them this last reserve of health, allows players to have

a chance to get hits in and turn the fight around to their advantage. This helps get rid of situations

where one player slaughters the other, without any chance for a comeback. This system also

helps emulate the back-and-forth fighting that generally happens between comic book heroes.

    Energy System

The Energy System in Crisis of The Super-Verse is broken into three different sections.

These sections are designated to three different moves. These are blocking, performing a combo

breaker, and using the player characters special attack. The energy meter fills from the blocking

section across into the special section. When an energy move is done the energy drains in the

opposite direction, from the special side to the blocking side. An energy move can only be

accomplished when there is energy within that designated section of the energy bar.

Because of the potential force stale mates due to the tug of war health system, there is a system

to help avoid this. This this is a damage multiplier over the progression of time in the game.

After sixty seconds, the damage of all the attacks doubles at a rate over thirty seconds. This

damage multiplier flattens out for fifteen seconds before increasing again to four times the

original damage over another fifteen seconds.

    Blocking-

    2; right trigger

Blocking is performed when the right trigger is held down. Having energy in the Energy

Meter is required to perform a block. If a character is taking damage while a block is being

performed, then the damage is transferred to the Energy Meter, and no damage is done to the

    Health Meter.

    Combo Breaker-

    3 + 4; both bumpers

Combo Breaker- is performed by pressing both bumpers, simultaneously. Having energy

in the Breaker Meter is required to perform a Combo Breaker. If an opponent is within a range

when the Combo Breaker is initiated and an amount of knock-back is applied to the opponent.

Performing a Combo Breaker removes an amount of energy from the Energy Meter.

    Special Attack-

1 + 9, 2; hold left trigger and aim right joystick, then right trigger

Special Attack Mode is entered by holding the left trigger. While in Special Attack

Mode, the Targeting Reticle is visible and Movement is disabled.

    a. Targeting Reticle- is aimed through the right joy stick. The Targeting Reticleorbits the character with a fixed diameter. The Targeting Reticle notes the

  • 7/30/2019 Crisis Design Doc

    9/44

direction in which the character will fire their Special Attack.

    b. Special Attack- is accomplished by pressing the right trigger while in SpecialAttack Mode. Having energy in the Special Meter is required to use a Special

Attack. Performing a Special Attack reduces an amount of energy in the Energy

Meter. (In the current prototype performing a Special Attack fires a Projectile.)

    c. (Projectile- is created by performing a Special Attack. A Projectile moves in thedirection of the Targeting Reticle away from the character. If the Projectile hit the

opponent, then the opponent receives damage.)

    Characters

    Character Systems

Each character has unique statistics in several systems to help to define the characters

    fighting style.

Attack Time- This is the amount of time that must pass when an attack is triggered, before another attack can be triggered.

Attack Damage- This is the amount of damage that these attacks do to the opposingplayer character.

Hit Stun- This is the amount of time that a player a character is stunned, unable to triggeran action, after being hit by an attack.

Knock Back- This is a force that is applied to a player character when the have received ahit. This is broken into X and Y components.

    Character Concepts

Every character in Crisis of the Super-Verse represents a different and important decade

in comics, with the characters being based on the important tropes of comics in those decades

o Billy Carter had a pretty normal life for a boy growing up in Cleveland Ohio. Hewasnt rich but his single father was able to support them with a store he owned.

He wasnt popular, but he had friends, who help him produce comic strips for

their school newspaper. Sadly this suburban happiness was not destined to last.

When Billy was in junior high his father was killed. He died of a heart attack

induced by receiving a gunshot wound during an armed robbery of his store.

Thankfully he was not alone. Industrial Philanthropist and billionaire playboy

Will Kahn who heard about Billy took interest. Will Kahn was similarly orphaned

at a young age and understood what he was feeling. Mr. Kahn adopted Billy and

brought him to his home in Chicago. Billy was only a kid at the time, and was

angry at the world for stealing his father, and he ran way. He hid from the police

looking for him in an abandoned train station. As the police approach calling his

name, he was guided by a shadowy stranger into an unnoticed train car. Billy is

grateful to the man, having successfully avoided his pursuers. The train lets out to

a mysterious cave filled with darkness and smoke. Attempting to question this

new environment, Bill discovers his new friend to be missing along with the train

that brought him there. Having no other choice he follows the cave forward. It

eventually opens up to a great hall in the center of which is enthroned an ancient

bearded man. The man introduces himself as Quin, and states that he is a time

wizard. He claims to have protected the planets for thousands of year within the

past and the future, but now he is too old and near death. He tells Billy that he has

chosen him as his successor. Quin reveals to him that through a magic word Billy

will have the power to become earths greatest champion. He will gain the

collective wisdom of his entire lifetime, and mature to a physical peak only

accessible through thousands of years of evolution. Billy says the word, Kara-

Set! and is unfolded in a burst of temporal energy. In his place stand the tall and

muscular adult of Major Marvelous, clad in a costume suited for the mostpowerful hero the world has ever known. The Wizard Quin says his farewells, and

as the scene fades from Major Marvelous eyes he witnesses the old mans last

breaths. Then our hero is back at his new home of Kahn Manor and back to being

    Billy Carter.

other person in the world understood their unique propulsion system which

moved by attaching to and riding energy beams. Given the go ahead on the

mission, the team prepared for a launch as the Explore 4. The flight seemed

successful until he ship began to leave earth atmosphere. Doctor Brynner would

later say that the energy beam they were riding must have cut. This resulted in an

explosion of an unknown energy causing the ship to crash. As the Explore 4

o Denny Adams joined the Explore Four at a young age. On their first journey intospace a horrible accident caused their space ship to crash back to Earth. Each of

the four gained amazing powers from the energies they were exposed to in space.

Unfortunately Dr. Brynner, their leader emerged from the wreckage paralyzed. In

reaction, Adams became their field leader. With the new Explorers, Adams spent

a long time as an adventuring hero in the farthest reaches of space.o Eventually Adams returned back to Earth, and his home town. Back in his home

town Adams witnessed the public beating of a business man. Adams quickly

saved the many and incapacitated his attacker, only to by the surrounding

spectators. Thankfully the fellow hero and recently bankrupt Bird-Man (Will

Kahn) arrived to clarify the publics displeasure. Bird-man revealed to him that

the business man was the landlord, who was evicting all of his residence and that

the man Blue Torch had arrested was his mother only source of income for their

family. Being exposed to this kind of moral relativism made Adams realize that

he is now out of touch with his own country and culture. Volunteering to be his

guide, Bird-Man and Blue Torch then embarked upon a cross country road trip toreacquaint themselves with the every-man American spirit. This relationship

lasted through many difficult adventures against cults, pollution industry leaders,

and racist politicians, but became very strained when they together discovered

that Bird-mans ward Bill Carter was suffering from a narcotics addiction. The

duo defeated the drug dealers and brought them to justice, but soon after went

    their separate paths.
