equivalent to a final exam and will showcase your semester’s work. With successful

completion of all four proficiency juries, the student will pass into upper level lessons

beginning their junior year and will then play a regular jury until the year of their senior

recital (see proficiency jury requirement sheet for details).

Failure to perform a proficiency jury will result in a failing grade for that semester. The student must arrange for the jury material with an accompaniment to be heard at least

twice in a lesson setting.

A student is required to bring the following materials to the proficiency exam. Failure to

do so will affect the student’s semester grade.

1. One completed repertory sheet

2. All materials and equipment borrowed from the instructor during the semester.

Please reserve a time on the jury sign-up sheet that will be posted at least a week in

advance each semester. Be sure to check with your accompanist ahead of time to find out

Trumpet Seminar:

Trumpet Seminar meets on Thursdays from 12:00-1:20pm. You are required to attend these

sessions as part of your study in Applied Trumpet. In addition to performance opportunities,

these classes will explore different aspects of trumpet playing including chamber music

performances, sectionals, guest performances, lectures, and pedagogical discussions. All ideas

for seminars are welcome and appreciated. You will be graded on attendance and participation

in seminar activities. The seminar grade will count as 10% of your semester grade in

Applied Trumpet.

Trumpet Ensemble:

When formulated, rehearsals will be scheduled according to availability. This ensemble will

provide a valuable opportunity to learn more about music from this genre, work with studio

members in a smaller chamber setting, and develop invaluable chamber music playing skills.

Graduate students will have an opportunity to conduct and/or coach rehearsals and performances.

Trumpet Studio Recital:

A culminating trumpet studio solo/chamber recital will take place at the end of each semester.

All students in the studio are required to play on this recital. Most students will perform the

solo they will be playing for juries; however, students are also given the option of performing

chamber music. Failure to perform on the studio recital will result in a lowered semester

grade.

Page 10: Course Objective: Freshman Year (lower level 025: 054) · PDF file3 Trumpet Proficiency Juries To pass into upper level lessons, lower level students must successfully pass all portions

10

Trumpet Studio Semester Projects:

Some semesters will include a studio project that focuses on a practical element to developing a

21st century career in music. Projects are meant to be useful and creative in nature. Ideas for

future projects are always welcome! Failure to successfully complete a semester project will

result in a lowered semester grade.

Lesson Expectations and Grading:

Thorough preparation for each lesson is essential to success in the University of Iowa Trumpet

Studio. A large portion of your lesson grade will be determined by your weekly preparation and

progress. You are expected to come to each lesson on time, warmed up, and prepared. At

the end of each lesson, you will be given a grade for that lesson and assignments will be made

for the following week. Failure to adequately prepare for a lesson will certainly be reflected in

your grade. Your lesson grade will be 70% of your semester grade in Applied Trumpet.

A description of the grading criteria

Preparation- the ability of the student to enter each lesson and show a reasonable level of

accuracy and consistency on the execution of weekly assigned solos, etudes, scales,

excerpts, and exercises, as well as, being able to exhibit an analytical comprehension of

the materials assigned.

Development- an effort on the student’s part to show musical maturing, technical

improvement and the increased ability to independently resolve performance problems,

technically, musically, or otherwise.

Recitals and Juries- all students will be graded on the preparation and performance of

juries and recitals.

As you progress through your semesters of study in the Trumpet Studio at the University

of Iowa, you will be held to an increasingly higher standard of performance. The goal for

each student is to improve steadily throughout his/her years of applied study.

11

Grading Rubric

A = arrives warmed up, all assigned lesson materials prepared to your best ability. All

technical aspects worked out, musically well thought out and executed. All musical terms have

been researched and put into practice. All lesson materials needed for the lesson (including

lesson notebook) are at the lesson.

B = arrives warmed up, all assigned lesson materials prepared to the best of your ability with

some minor technical and musical execution flaws (still well thought out musically). All musical

terms have been researched and put into practice. All lesson materials needed for the lesson

(including lesson notebook) are at the lesson.

C = arrives warmed up, however, not all of the lesson material has been prepared thoroughly.

There are numerous technical flaws and not completely thought out musically. Some of the

musical terms have been researched. All lesson materials needed are at the lesson (including

lesson notebook).

D = arrives not entirely warmed up, most of the lesson material is not prepared and includes

many technical and musical flaws. None of the musical terms have been identified and may not

have all of the lesson materials needed for the lesson (including the lesson notebook).

F = arrives not warmed up at all, none of the lesson material is prepared to any extent. No

musical terms have been identified or researched. May or may not have all the lesson materials

needed for the lesson (including the lesson notebook).

*Not having all of your required lesson materials at your lesson (including the lesson

notebook) = an automatic D for that particular lesson (this would be the equivalent to

showing up at a job without being prepared), even if you are well prepared otherwise.

Attendance Policy:

A portion of the student’s grade is based on attendance at all lessons, special events (e.g. guest

artist performances and master classes), and studio seminar. As stated previously, you are

expected to be on time, prepared, and to bring the required materials to each lesson. Failure to

meet any of these criteria will affect your grade. If you know you will be absent, please notify

me as soon as possible.

A student who is unable to attend a scheduled lesson is required to notify the

teacher at least 24 hours before the lesson time. Otherwise, the student will forfeit

his/her right to make up the lesson. Missing a lesson due to a work commitment is not

an excused absence.

If a student has a sudden illness, the lesson will be rescheduled in accordance with

university policy.

Emergency absences are handled on a case by case basis.

A student is allowed 1 unexcused absence per semester without affecting the final

semester grade.

Page 12: Course Objective: Freshman Year (lower level 025: 054) · PDF file3 Trumpet Proficiency Juries To pass into upper level lessons, lower level students must successfully pass all portions

12

A student absent without excuse from more than three lessons during any semester

will earn a grade of “F” for that semester.

The easiest way to notify me is to email ([email protected]) or call my studio number

and leave a message on the 24-hour voice mail service: 319-319-1653.

Lessons missed by the teacher will be rescheduled by agreement between the teacher and the

student. I will do everything I can to make as many scheduled lessons as possible. I will also

give you as much advance warning as I possibly can if I must miss a lesson.

Pianists:

The responsibility of obtaining an accompanist for the end of semester jury performance, recital

performance, and/or studio recital performance rests solely upon the student. The Piano

Department at the University of Iowa offers students the option of requesting a pianist for juries

and/or recitals at no cost. You must visit the website

http://wiki.uiowa.edu/display/music/Piano+Studio

to read the guidelines and fill out the required form. Please do this at the beginning of each

semester as you will not be granted a pianist if you wait until mid-semester to turn in the form.

The student is also responsible for getting the piano accompaniment to the pianist in a timely

fashion. Failure to do so will result in a deduction of your semester grade.

Students are required to have a pianist for the last seminar, jury, studio recital, plus 2

coaching’s with me 3-4 weeks prior to first performance. Must make sure pianist has

music 2 months prior to 1st rehearsal. Failure to comply with any portion results in a

lowered semester grade.

Required Music:

Each student will be required to purchase the music that he/she will use during a semester.

Borrowed or copied music will only be used until the student’s own materials can be obtained.

You should budget your finances to buy music just as you would for textbooks in other classes.

As a serious student of the trumpet, this is the time to begin building your own personal library.

Dr. Schendel will tell you at the beginning of each semester what music you are expected to

purchase. Failure to bring the required materials to a lesson will result in a grade of “F”

for that lesson. Repeated failure to bring the required materials to lessons will result in a

grade of “F” for your semester grade.

Lesson Notebook:

You are required to bring a notebook to every lesson. The notebook will be used to write

assignments, instructions, goals, observations, and evaluations related to your weekly lesson.

Page 13: Course Objective: Freshman Year (lower level 025: 054) · PDF file3 Trumpet Proficiency Juries To pass into upper level lessons, lower level students must successfully pass all portions

13

Repeated failure to have a notebook at your lesson will result in a 10% grade deduction of

your semester grade.

Concert Attendance:

Attendance at the following events is strongly encouraged:

1. All brass faculty solo recitals

2. All recitals by the Iowa Brass Quintet

3. All brass guest artist recitals and master classes

Attendance at the following events is mandatory:

1. Trumpet guest artist recitals, clinics, or master classes

2. Student trumpet recitals

You will be notified of all required events in advance. Unexcused absences from mandatory

events will result in a deduction of your semester grade.

Jury, Proficiency Juries, and Recital Preparation with pianists at all levels:

1. You are required to have a pianist obtained no later than the last week of September (fall

semester) or the last week of February (spring semester) for all jury, proficiency, and

recital performances that take place at the end of the semester.

Recommended pianists that you may hire independently:

Aura Strohschein: [email protected]

Wenjing Liu: [email protected]

Jason Sifford: [email protected]

Joe McKinely [email protected]

Gustavo Do Carmo [email protected]

To request a pianist through the University of Iowa Piano Department, please see the

School of Music Wiki Pianist Request Form located on the School of Music website

(Wiki). Please read the guidelines for requesting a pianist very carefully!

2. For all jury, jury proficiency, and trumpet studio recital preparation, you and your pianist

must schedule 2 coaching sessions with Dr. Schendel (normal lesson time is the best)

beginning 1 month prior to your performance.

3. For all optional and degree recital preparation, you and your pianist must schedule a

minimum of 3 coaching sessions with Dr. Schendel beginning 1 month prior to your first

performance. In addition, you must schedule a dress rehearsal with Dr. Schendel the

week of your performance.

4. For all optional and degree recitals, scheduling 1 or more practice recitals is highly

recommended.

5. No degree recitals will be scheduled during final’s week. No exceptions.

6. Senior recital performances require a recital hearing 2 weeks prior to the recital date.

This hearing will

last approx. 30 minutes

involve playing for the entire brass faculty

you will perform sections of your repertoire as requested by the faculty

you need to have your entire recital program typed and 4 copies for each

faculty member at the start of the hearing

Failure to follow these guidelines will result in a lowered semester grade and, when

applicable, recital grade.
