Description
This SME is looking for ground-breaking technologies that can be presented to major water utilities companies at their innovation forum. Through the innovation forum run by this SME over 100 innovative SMEs have been invited to present directly to water utilities from Europe and around the globe. Many of these have gone on to technology trials with major utilities and subsequent commercial contracts. Additionally, over £50m of investment has been secured for SMEs at various
stages of market readiness. In order to ensure impartiality and that technologies chosen to present are selected on technical merit alone, the innovation forum is entirely funded by the utility membership. There is no charge to participating SMEs at any stage. The industry forum is only one form of assistance on offer; links to investment and knowledge transfer partners are also available.
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought
The SME is looking for companies with innovative technologies or service offerings that could be applied in the water sector. For example, technologies that: - Use less energy than current technologies - Are significantly cheaper than existing alternatives - Are able to outperform current technologies (e.g. a sensor that is more accurate, a filter that has a higher flow rate, etc.) - Can generate or recover energy from normal water company operations (in-pipe turbines, sludge pre-treatment technologies to improve AD processes, etc.) - Are able to measure or treat something that cannot easily be measured or treated (reagent less online metal sensors for networks, nutrient removal at WWTW, etc.) - Can bring a unique benefit of any kind to water utility operations (improved customer service, work management or health and safety for example)

Wet processing machine for micro crushing of biogas-substrates to improve efficiency and operating costs
Summary
A German company with 50 employees is specialised in environmental technologies. To crush, defribrate, grind, mix, homogenize and feed wet and mostly organic materials a unique machine was developed, field tested and now adopted to biogas plants. It increases the efficiency, i.e. higher outcome of gas and less digestate. Biogas plant operators and industrial partners are sought to integrate the technology in their equipment and processes through commercial agreements with technical assistance.

Description
Biogas technology is to date mainly used to provide gas for electricity production combined with heat supply. There is however a trend to increase the efficiency of the outcome of biogas in relation to fed biomass. Biomass needs to be crushed and conditioned to a homogeneous mass to get fed into the biogas reactor for an anaerobic digestion by bacteria. Depending on the raw materials' lignocellulose contents the digestate is more or less fibrous with contents of structural plant matter such as lignin and cellulose. Anaerobic bacteria cannot break down them promptly and completely. Digestion needs a lot of time and the final digestate with its remarkable energy or potential gas content is primarily used as a soil conditioner today. Biogas plants are in 24/365 operation and they are designed for a lifetime of several decades. The whole biogas equipment must meet these requirements on a longtime-basis and generates a suitable investment. Higher gas outcome and shorter decomposition time would enhance the return of invest. To meet this requirements and to improve the process a German company developed and adjusted a wet processing machine to bio mass. The German company with 50 employees is specialised in environmental technologies, i. e. systems and equipments for the transportation and treatment of waste water and process liquids. The company developed a machine for grinding and homogenising food, cosmetical, chemical and other products and for all types of pasty products. Its principle is simple: an angular disk rotates in a cylindrical housing, accelerates the medium, generates thrust and shear stress and crushes solids by the teething geometry of the rotor disc. The simplicity opens a wide range of applications and mediums, also suitable to be part of a dressing unit for raw bio mass. The wet processing machine can be adapted to the respective conditions and meets all safety requirements. The volume and particle size can be varied. Industrial partners such as biogas plant operators or engineering

Description
The inventor is a small and medium sized German enterprise, active in machine tools, located in the heart of the German region of Saxony, which is well known for machine tools since the beginning of the last century. After its business start-up in 1989 in a technology centre, the company changed its location to a technology park. The innovation power can be demonstrated with over 40 patents and utility patents. The product range reaches from simple containers and coverings over advertising media up to strongly resilient sheets for wind-power plants and storefront panels. 55 employees are working with the Company group concerned with construction, production and assembly of fibre-reinforced composites.Since 2009, two plants are producing at the German location as well as in several facilities in Poland, Czech Republic, Romania and Serbia. The crucial difference between these wind-power plants and the commercial, well-known wind plants exists in the technology of the vertical axis. An important component of the technological innovation is the new rotor concept. Compared with conventional vertical axis plants it makes an increased energy output possible with large reduction of the otherwise usual, annoying background noises of all wind-power plants Current and Potential Domain of Application: Environmentally-friendly generation of energy and operators of wind parks. The company seeks partners from industry and/or research for technical cooperation, manufacturing and/or a commercial agreement.
Advantages and Innovations
The Vertical Axis Wind Turbines are designed to start rotating at 1.5 m/s and/or another type at 3.0 m/s wind speed and to begin to produce power at a wind speed of 3.5 m/s. Due to his special design the turbines are operating virtually quiet. The robust construction is without wearing parts. It is maintenance free and works reliable even under extreme conditions.

Description
A Spanish research entity and two Universities from USA and Switzerland have developed a device for energy harvesting. The device comprises a set of quantum dot nanostructures located between the contacts of an electrically connected cavity. The high degree of tunability of quantum dots allows optimal harvesting of the heat generated in the cavity. The simplicity of the designed structure eases its replication in a two-dimensional distribution enhancing the generated power. Energy harvesting is currently one of the most important technological challenges. The need of small and energetically autonomous sensors distributed throughout the environment involves the use of elements which can provide the required amount of energy to assure their working state. For this purpose the types of harvested sources can be movement, differences in temperature, light and radiofrequency emissions. The ultimate goal of this technology is to obtain perpetual devices freed of any wire connection. The uses of these devices are increasing every day being medical applications and distributed environmental monitoring the most current ones. The designed device harvests energy from an environment at a higher temperature by converting heat to electric power. It comprises, in a basic form, a quantum dot nanostructure located between the contacts of an electrically connected cavity. This nanostructure works according to the tunnel effect and only transfers electrons at chosen energies and therefore brings about a powerful and efficient thermal engine. The structure simplicity allows a two-dimensional replication easily achievable by current manufacturing techniques. This feature is a significant advantage for a rapid introduction to the market. Furthermore, its flexibility allows an easy embedment in any other electronic device covering a wide range of needs. Current and Potential Domain of Application: Nanotechnologies.Energy harvesting. Personal mobile devices. Distributed sensing.
Advantages and Innovations
- Estimated generated power of 1 W / cm2 for each ºC difference. - Without any moving parts. Easily
