• BACKGROUNDNonlinear analysis methods are in the core of modern engineering, while future design codes willrecommend such analysis methods as standard practice. Understanding the basic algorithms andrequirements for the proper modeling of different structural systems is essential, while the robust andaccurate modeling requires a good grasp of the fundamentals. The course intents to provide the basicframework of nonlinear methods in civil engineering, while applications on buildings, bridges andstructuresofthechemicalindustrywillbepresented.• OBJECTIVESOFTHECOURSEThemainobjectiveofthiscourseistofamiliarizestudentswiththestate-of-the-artinnonlinearstaticanddynamicanalysisofstructures.Attheendofthecourse,studentsshouldbeableto:
§ Understandthebasicconceptsandtypesofnonlinearproblemsinstructuralmechanicsandchoosethepropermodeling
§ createrobustandaccurateFEmodels§ workontheseismicperformanceassessmentofcommonstructures(e.g.frames)forusingstatic
pushoveranalysisornonlinearresponsehistoryanalysisusinggroundmotionrecords§ understandmaterialnonlinearity,i.e.constitutivelawsforsteelandconcrete,sectionsanalysis,the
differencebetweenlumpedplasticityandthevariousfiberelementapproaches§ extenttheabovetoolsonmorecomplicatedsystemssuchasbridgesandliquidstoragetanks§ understandthebasicsoffluid-structure-interaction(FSI)§ performfundamentalreliabilityanalysisproducingseismicfragilitycurves
• ABOUTTHEINSTRUCTORS
DrMichalisFragiadakisisAssistantProfessorattheSchoolofCivilEngineeringoftheNational Technical Universisty of Athens (NTUA), Greece. He received his PhD fromNTUAandholdsMScdegreesformNTUAandImperialCollege.Hisresearchactivityisfocusedonstructuralandearthquakeengineeringandonriskassessment.Hisinterestsalsoextendtocomputationalmethods instructuralanalysisandontheapplicationofsoft-computing methodologies for structural analysis and design. Dr Fragiadakis hasbeeninvolvedinvariousnationalandinternationalresearchprojectsandhasalsoco-organised international conferences and a number of mini-symposia and specialsessions.Hehasauthoredmorethan150researchpublications,whichhavereceivedalargenumberofcitations.DrFragiadakishaspeer-reviewedresearchpapersformorethan 35 International Journals and has advised (or co-advised) 32undergraduate/graduatestudentsand5PhDstudents.
Dr. Luigi Di Sarno is currently Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering, at theUniversityofLiverpool,UKandservesasAssistantProfessorinEarthquakeEngineeringattheEngineeringDepartment,UniversityofSannioatBenevento,Italy,since2005.Healso holds a MSc in Earthquake Engineering and Structural Design and a MSc inStructural Steel Design both from Imperial College, London, UK. In 2001 he got fromUniversityofSalernoaPhD inStructuralEngineering.HewasVisitingProfessorat theMid-America Earthquake Center, headquartered at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign,USA,between2002and2014.HeisHonoraryMemberStaffattheCollegeofEngineering,University ofBristol, UK, since 2011.Other visiting appointments includeImperial College of London, UK, University of Toronto, Canada, University of Bogazici,Turkey. The research interests include: (i) seismic analysis, design and retrofitting ofresidential buildings, health care facilities, critical structures and infrastructures,especiallywithbaseisolationandsupplementaldamping,(ii)analysisanddesignoftallbuildings subjected to extreme loads and (iii) advanced experimental testing andnumerical simulation.Dr.Di Sarnohas authoredmore than200 researchpublications,includingrefereedjournals,conferencepapers,researchreports,bookchaptersandfieldinvestigation reports. He has co-authored with Professor A.S. Elnashai the book:FundamentalsofEarthquakeEngineering,editedbyWiley&Sons.
Dr.FabrizioPaolacci isAssistantProfessorinStructuralEngineeringattheRomaTreUniversity –Department of Engineering and Chair of the Seismic Technical Committeewithin the ASME PVP division. His main scientific interests are focused on: a)Performance-based design of steel-concrete composite bridges, b) Assessment andreductionoftheseismicriskofreinforcedconcretebuildingsandbridges,c)Seismicriskofmajor-hazardindustrialplantsandapplicabilityofinnovativeprotectionsystems(baseisolation and energy dissipation), e) Seismic vulnerability of high-voltage electricnetworksandsubstationsandapplicabilityof innovative seismicprotection systems, f)Passiveandsemi-activecontrolofstructures.Hegainedalongstandingexperienceinthemanagementofresearchprojectsaboutexperimentalassessmentoftheseismicresponseof structures. He is currently PI of many European projects. From 2008 to 2013 Heassumed the role of scientific coordinator of the Laboratory of Testing Materials andStructures of theDepartment of Structures of theUniversityRomaTre. He received afellowship provided by CNR (National Research Council) for a research activity of sixmonths at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of University ofCaliforniaatBerkeley fromSeptember1999toFebruary2000asvisitingscholar.He isauthorofmorethan100publicationsonInternationalJournalsandconferences.
