Byzantine Iconography Symbolism

AN ICON IS NOT A REPRESENTATION, BUT RATHER A REFLECTION OF ITS SOURCE

HOW THE REFLECTION IS ACHIEVED

The icon is not understood simply as an artistic depiction or representation of something but rather as the living and dynamic

reflection of its source. The Orthodox faithful understand icons to be the reflections of living and life-giving persons whose beloved faces we

behold as if in a mirror.

The reflection is achieved by transforming the natural symmetries and proportions of the body,

especially the features of the face.
