SMC Chairman Letter The New Year is off to a great start for
the members of the Sales & Marketing
Council. There are signs that the market
is beginning to improve and everyone
is optimistic about our future. After
surveying our members in January we
heard loud and clear that “Education”
was a top priority for most that replied.
We heard you and we have developed
an education schedule with topics of interest for everyone. We
have even included core and elective courses for your real estate
licensing renewal. Please check out the education calendar to
see if there is a course that would be of benefit to you.
We also heard from many who wanted to become more involved
in committees and leadership positions within the council. We
are making every effort to reach out to all that want to be more
involved. Member involvement is what makes our council so
strong. We will continue to ask for input from members so
we can assure that we are serving everyone effectively. Please
let any Board Member or me know what you want out of the
council.
I am very excited with the progress we have made so far
this year and I am confident that the best is yet to come. We
have many great things in process for the remainder of 2010,
so look out for the notices of each event to come. I want to
thank everyone for their feedback so far and all the efforts of
our members in making our activities successful. Many others
and I are striving to make your Sales & Marketing Council
membership an investment in your future success. I wish
everyone all the best for 2010!
Sincerely,

Home Show Green The Green Building Council of Greater Columbia was
at the Home & Garden Show in March spreading the
green word to attendees. We started off the show
with a joint meeting with the local US Green Building
Council (USGBC) chapter and a seminar on the
value of going green. Chairman Bill Wichlei, CGP
continued speaking on the subject with his “Be Green
$ave Green” seminar that he presented each day of
the show.
Council members also joined the SC Energy Office in
a display space in the Moore Building throughout the
show. Show attendees stopped at the booth to learn
about the Appliance Rebate Program offered through
the SCEO and got to learn more about green building
from our members.
The Green Building Council leadership has been
asking for a redesign of the council website for
some time now. In preparation for the Home &
Garden Show, we did just that. Check out the newly
redesigned website at www.ColumbiaGreenBuilders.
com. We hope you find it to be more user friendly
and helpful.
While you’re there, check out our Green Building
Council Blog. We’re the only group actively blogging
in the HBA and we want you to participate. Got a
thought about green construction? Wondering if
anyone else shares your opinion on an issue? Found
a good story about green building that you want to
share with others? Submit it to the Blog or to Bin
Wilcenski at [email protected] and we’ll
get it on the web! It’s easy to do and helps spread the
green message to the masses.

The Columbia home building community is saddened by the unexpected loss of Mungo Company founder Michael J. Mungo on April 11, 2010 at age 82. He unquestionably shaped the housing landscape of the Midlands and made homeownership affordable to the masses.
One of Columbia’s most successful businessmen, he always wanted to be remembered not for any of the 50-plus subdivisions he developed that shaped suburban Columbia, but rather for what those subdivisions enabled him to do for Columbia. His legacy is his passionate support for the poor, including the education of so many and his faithful commitment to the church. Born in Kershaw County, Mr. Mungo’s father died when he was a young boy and his mother sadly separated the seven children for financial reasons during the Depression. He lived with his sister in Rock Hill until he graduated from Rock Hill High School and joined the U.S. Army Corps from which he was honorably discharged in 1947. Driven to change his station in life from a “have not,” he knew that an education would be the key to his success. He worked his way through the University of South Carolina by starting and running a successful drywall business and completed his degree in only 2 1/2 years. Mr. Mungo married Mary Catherine Meech in 1950. He worked for the CW Haynes Realty Company until he enlisted with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After the war, he
started the Michael J. Mungo Company in 1954. With the completion of I-26 and the city’s population increasing, he predicted Columbia’s migration towards the suburbs. He was largely responsible for the development of Irmo/St. Andrews as well as for bringing water and sewer utility service to the area. After the death of his wife in 1978, Mr. Mungo retired at the age of 50 to pursue a life of philanthropy, leaving the company to sons Stewart and Steven. He concentrated on building the Michael J. Mungo Foundation which supports those in need. Having grown up poor, he felt a tremendous need to help others in similar circumstances. He understood the value of his own education and donated countless scholarships for disadvantaged youth; and established the Michael J. Mungo Distinguished Professor Award at USC. Mr. Mungo was the recipient of numerous awards, including: the Order of the Palmetto in 1996; and, in 1997, the National Society of Fund-Raising Executives (NSFRE) honored him as its Outstanding Philanthropist. In 1996 he was inducted into the South Carolina Housing Hall of Fame for his commitment to making a lasting contribution to housing in our state.
He created the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Housing, now the S.C. Housing Authority, he helped establish the Statewide Homes Foundation, a self-help organization in the African-American community for development of homes. He was a founding board member for Harvest Hope Food Bank and provided Providence Home with their first facility. He also helped pursue the missions of charities such as the Cooperative Ministry, Christ Central Ministries, HomeWorks, Sharing God’s Love, SCOA Cares and the Free Medical Clinic. Mr. Mungo was an ardent supporter of the University of South Carolina, and was the longest-standing Board of Trustees member, he served as chairman from 1988 - 1992 and was currently serving as a member of the Executive, Fiscal Policy and Intercollegiate Athletic committees.
His legacy is his passionate support for the poor,
including the education of so many and his faithful
commitment to the church.

So, our SPIKE of the Month for March is Carl J. Berry of Sycamore Development, LLC. Special thanks to Judi McLeod and Wade McGuinn for sponsoring two members each in March.
We had nine new members join the HBA in April. Each was sponsored by a different member, so we have a 9-way tie for this month. Thanks to these members for sponsoring a new member in April: Carl J. Berry, John Buzzell, Alan Clayton, John Covert, Barry Davis, George Delk, Bill Dixon, Patrick Dunbar, and Ruth Ellen Hardee.
The 2010 HBA Membership Drive is going on now. The baseball-themed drive features five teams of members working to bring in new members to the organization. The drive will be centered on May 10 – 12 when the bulk of the new members will be brought in. But, in case you didn’t join a team (or this newsletter comes out too late), you can still get involved and be rewarded for your efforts.
If you’re not on a team you can still get someone to join the HBA. Simply turn to page 4 of this newsletter for an HBA Application. Give that to a potential member with your name in the “Sponsored by” blank at the bottom. Make sure they return it to the HBA with dues payment by May 23. What you get: Double SPIKE Points and, if you bring multiple new members by May 23, special prizes from NAHB. See ColumbiaBuilders.com/GrandSlam for more information.
March was a big month for new members joining the HBA. Of the 27 new members in March, four were sponsored by one man.
