2016 FocusThe College has focused on several key areas for improvement in year five of its School Improvement Plan.
The College is in the final stages of preparing for access to Council of International School Accreditation (CIS) with a view to having this granted in 2017 after the panel visitation.
The five spheres of the Plan are:• EducationinFaith• LearningandTeaching• StudentWellbeing• LeadershipandManagement• SchoolCommunity
A set of criteria around strategies occur through all five years of the plan. A specific Annual Action Plan was developed for 2016 where the emphasis was on:
• Collaborationforinspiringpedagogy• Enhancingcommunityconnection• CatholicityinaCarmeliteschool
Senior Student Outcomes and Tertiary DestinationsVCEresultswereintheexpectedrangeforthecohortwithintheCollege.
ThereportonLearningandTeachinggivesdetail,howeverwehadover7%
ofourstudentsachieveastudyscoreof40ormore.Wehavecompleteda
verycarefulanalysisoftheresultscomparedtotheacademicstrengthof
thegroup.Basedontheabilitylevelofthegroupwewereverypleasedwith
theoutcome.Arelativelyhighnumberofstudentsachieved90ormore.

Pastoral CareThesurveyresultsfromtheEndicottSurvey(whichhadallstaffand
studentsresponding,anda70%responseratefromparents)indicatedthat
thereisaveryhighlevelofsatisfactionwiththepastoralstructuresand
processesoftheCollege.Boysfeelvalued.
TheCollegehasaverticalHousebasedsystemwithstudentsgatheringin
pastoralgroupsthatrepresenteachoftheyearlevels.Thisstructureserves
uswellinmeetingstudentwelfareandmanagementneeds,aswellas
fosteringasenseofsafety,security,belongingandconnectedness.
Houseactivitiestakeplacewherestudentleadershipisbasedonthe
premiseofservantleadership,withmodellingfromourolderboysthrough
totheyoungergroups.Mentoringofyoungstudentstakesplace.
Relationshipshaveprosperedunderthismodel.
Co-Curricular ActivitiesTheCollegehasaverywiderangeofoutofclassactivities.Lastyearwehad
anumberofinterstateandoverseastoursthatcoveredaspectsofsocial
service,language,history,politicsandsport.Anincreasednumberare
plannedfor2017.
Wesuccessfullycompetedinanumeroussportingandothercompetitions.
Overall,Whitefriarsstudentsparticipatedinaverywiderangeofco-
curricularandsportingactivitiesinlargenumbersandwithconsiderable
enthusiasmandexpertise.Wehavemaintainedourcompulsorysports
afternoonsforYear7-10(TuesdaysandThursdays)andtheoptional
WednesdaysportafternoonforACCactivitiesinYears11and12.Therewere
aseriesofhighresultsinacademiccompetitions.
ThePerformingArtsareanessentialpartofboys’education.TheBelievein
MusicConcertsforourCatholicfeederschools,theJazzSoireeandRockConcerts
werecomplementedbythehighlyprofessionalproductionofourGalaEvening.
Thelargearrayofmusicalofferings,includingorchestral,choir,ensemble
androckbandsallowedthestudentstonotonlylearntheirinstrumentof
choicebutalsoperformlivetoanumberofaudiences.Alloftheseevents
reinforcetheemphasisonthePerformingArtswithintheCollege.
AnumberofOutdoorLearningCampsfromYears7-11wereheld.These
rangedfromtwotofivedayexperiencesgivingourboysafurtherinsight
intoteamwork,resilienceandpreparation.
Whitefriarssupportsanumberofexternalorganisations;DonCare,theBlood
Bank,theAustinSpinalUnit,WhiteRibbonFoundationandtheReach
Foundationarebutafewexamples.
Housebasedeventsallowustoprovideallstudentswiththeopportunityto
leadorparticipateinovertheyear.Contributionsbystudentstovarious
communityevents,especiallythosethatoccurwithintheCityof
Manninghamwerecommon.
Aseriesofacademicenrichmentactivitiesprovidedthestudentswith
opportunitiessuchasScience,MathsandEnglishenrichmentfromYears
7-11;thesealongwithScienceClub,Chess,DebatingandtheEnvironment
ClubaresomeexamplesoftheofferingsatWhitefriars.
TheCollegehasastrongassociationwithTimor-Lestewithmanyofourstaff
andstudentstravellingtheremid-yearandduringthethirdtermbreak.Our
staffofferprogramsintheology,philosophyandEnglishfortheyoung
TimoresestudentsbasedatHera,DiliandZumalai.
TheHousegroupsareassociatedwithlocalcharities.Wehavemaintained
ourinvolvementinCommunityServiceandWorkExperience(forYear10
students).Thishasbeenbeneficialandprovidesastrongindicationofa
communitywillingtoshareofitselfanditsresources.
Whitefriarshasawell-establishedandsuccessfultransitionprocessfornew
students.TheTransitionProgrambeginsinthemid-yearpriortoentrywitha
visitationtoeveryYear6studentwithintheirownschoolsetting.Thereis
muchinformationcollectedandsharedappropriatelytoenableasmooth
crossoverfromprimarytosecondaryeducation.TheOrientationcampand
theendofyearOutdoorLearningcampbothprovideasenseofbelonging
andthisisreinforcedinsubsequentyearswiththeOutdoorLearning
PrograminYears8-10,thevoluntaryandwellattendedYear11Kairos
retreatsandtheAcademicandPastoralCampsforourYear12students.
Thespiritual,socialandemotionalneedsofthestudentshavebeenwell
metthroughsuchexperiences.

Satisfaction LevelsTheEndicottSurveywasundertakenaspartofourtwoyearprocess
towardsCouncilofInternationalSchools(CIS)accreditation.Thisisan
extensivesurveyofourcommunity.
TheresultsindicateaverystrongsenseofoverallsatisfactionoftheCollege
amongststakeholders.Parentsexpressedtheirhighdegreeofsupport
whilststudentswereclearlyoftheviewthattheirpastoralwelfarehasbeen
wellattendedtothisyear.
Parentresponseswereverypositive,indicatingstronglevelsofsatisfaction
withtheirrelationshipswithstaff,thecurricularandco-curricularprogram
andthelevelofpastoralcareattheschool,includingaverystrongviewthat
studentsaresafe.
Importantly,therewasaverystrongcorrelationbetweentheMissionand
ValuesoftheCollegeandthelivedrealityofourstudents,parentsandstaff.
Wecontinuetoseesomeneedtoimprovetheengagementlevelsofour
studentswithintheclassroom,especiallyasitrelatestotheMiddleYears
area.“StudentVoice”needstobeafurtherfocusfortheCollege.
Stafffeltthatworklevelsweremanageable.Staffindicatedagoodlevelof
jobsatisfaction.
Studentsindicatedastrongconnectiontoschoolandthatstaffwerekeento
lookafterthemholistically.Someindicationsofstudentswantingamore
engagingclassroom(particularlyinYears8and9)werepresentandthisrelates
toaspectsaroundtheMiddleYears.Thisareawillhavestrongthrustin2017.
Anoverallstudentattendancerateofjustover93%confirmstheabove
senseofconnection.OverallretentionratesforYears9-12andYearlevel
attendancerates(Years7-10)aregivenasbelow:
Studentabsenceisfollowedupbypastoralcarestaff.Clearproceduresare
listedintheCollegediaryandonline.
Looking to the FutureTheCollegeimplementedthefourthofthefiveyearsofAnnualActionPlans
in2016.Whitefriarshasnowenteredintoafullaccreditationprocessforthe
CouncilofInternationalSchools(CIS).Wewerevisitedbyapanelwhocame
forthePreliminaryVisit,aprocessbyCIStoseewhethertheCollegehasthe
capacitytoengageinsucharigorousprocess.Wewerepleasedwiththe
reportwhichindicatedaclosealignmentbetweentheWhitefriarsMissionand
ValuesandtherealityoftheCollege.Withthisinmindwehavenowmoved
toafullyearofreviewwhichinvolvesstudents,staff,parentsandtheBoard.
Theseplansaredesignedtolookforwardwithasenseofgreathopeand
thoroughplanningwhichrespectsthosewhohavegonebeforeusand
buildsonthegiftsandtalentsofthecurrentWhitefriarscommunity.
Whitefriarsgraduatesneedtobepreparedforlifebeyondschooling.This
meansthatthespiritual,academicandaspirationalneedsofourstudentsare
paramount.Weaimtoassistfamilieswiththedevelopmentoftheirboysinto
‘gentlemen’whoarevirtuous,courageousandsacrificingintheirfuturelives.

externaltotheCollege.Thefocusofthissupportisdeterminedinthe
contextoftheCollege’sMissionandValuesStatementsandtheCollege’s
AnnualActionPlan.TheProfessionalLearningofstaffisundertakenwith
referencetotheAustralianProfessionalStandardsforTeachers.
Currentnationalandinternationaleducationalresearchisexceptionally
consistentinitsassertionsthatoneofthegreatestcontributorstoimproved
studentlearningisimprovedinstruction.Topperformingschoolsand
schoolsystemsarerelentlessintheirfocusonimprovingthequalityof
instructionintheirclassrooms.TheProfessionalLearningneedsat
Whitefriarsin2016relatedtopreparationforimplementationofthenew

CIS Self-StudyInseekingCISaccreditation,arigorous‘self-study’isthevehiclefor
continuousschoolimprovement.Theprocessinvolvesevaluatingthe
CollegeinthelightofourownGuidingStatementsandtheCISSchool
EvaluationStandards.
VCAA – preparation for implementation of reaccredited 2016/2017 VCE Study Designs
Peer CoachingTheongoingPeerCoachingprogramatWhitefriarsisfoundedoncollegialtrust,
respectandcollaboration;encouragesexperimentationandoccasional
failures;endeavorstobeintolerantofmediocrity;fostersacultureofgenuine
evaluation&reflection;seekstofacilitatechangefromwithinandincorporate
thedevelopmentanduseofskillssuchaslistening,questioning,clarifying

Professional Learning Day 1 – 27 JanuaryOur Carmelite IdentityOurfirstProfessionalLearningDayfortheyearprovidedawonderful
opportunityforallstafftocometogetherandreviewthehistory,purpose
andcharismofourCarmeliteschool.
FrPaulChandler,O.CarmpresentedtoallstaffontheoriginsoftheCarmelite
Order.HeprovidedaCarmelitenarrativetotheCrusades,utilisediconographical
analyseswithreferencetoJesus,Mary,ElijahandthehistoryoftheCarmelite
Order,andremindedusthatCarmeliteslive“inallegianceofJesusChrist”,as
theCarmeliteRuleproclaims,andthatweareall“prayingandprophetic
communitiesinachangingworld”.Carmeliteslivethislifewithapureheart
andaclearconsciencethroughacommitmenttoseekthefaceoftheliving
God(thecontemplativedimensionoflife),throughprayer,through
fraternityandthroughservice(diakonia).Thesethreefundamentalelements
ofthecharismarenotdistinctandunrelatedvalues,butcloselyinterwoven.
AllofthisisalsowithinthecontextofaChristian,CatholicChurch.
Themorningwasinterspersedwithsomereflectionandinsightsintothe
Carmelitecharismfromtheperspectiveofsomenew,middletermand
long-servingmembersofstaff.

“formulaforliving”thatCarmelitesfollow.Thisshortbutprofounddocument
inspiresallbranchesoftheCarmeliteFamilytothisday.Allstaffwereableto
reflectonBrMatthew’spresentationsandsharetheimplicationsforour
livesinacontemporarycontext.
