A Note from the Principal

Welcome to October everyone! This month is one of my favorite months. The weather is changing, there are all kinds of sporting events to watch (Braves, Bulldogs, etc.), and the hope of family events such as Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner.

Speaking of hope, I am hopeful that you are enjoying your time here at BPS. We have been working hard at being the best school we can be, for your child. One thing that helps us in this endeavor is the federal program known as Title I. As you know from our Title I parent nights, this program allows us to employ additional personnel and purchase additional items to assist your children as they learn. If you ever have any comments, ideas, or suggestions concerning Title I, please do not hesitate to contact me or drop a note in the Title I box located in the main office.

We also have two major events happening this month. The first one is Grandparents’ Day. This is a huge event, as far as the number of guests that we will have in the school building. The day is filled with fun with grandparents meeting the teachers, going to the book fair, and maybe even getting their picture taken. As far as parking logistics go for that day, please be patient with one another.

The other major event is our APEX fundraiser!!! If you are a first or second grade parent, you know about APEX. Kindergarten parents, your kids are in for a treat! APEX is a two-week fundraiser that culminates with a race day your child will hopefully never forget. Truthfully, it is one of the best times of our school year.

Finally, allow me to say THANK YOU to all of you who supported our school during the PTO cookie dough fundraiser! The money from this fundraiser, the APEX fun run, and Title I are what keep this

school being the best it can be. That is it for now. I’ll see you in the hallways.

Nurse’s Notes It’s October again and mixed in with the images of ghosts, goblins and witches is another scary subject: the flu. It is a good idea for most children to re-ceive the flu vaccine. If your child has a chronic medical condition, he or she

might require the flu vaccine to prevent becoming seri-ously ill. Your child’s pediatrician will be able to make specific recommendations. Listed below are some im-portant facts to remember about the flu and the flu vac-cine. Flu Guidelines Children who have never before had a

flu vaccine will require 2 doses, one month apart.

Signs and symptoms of the flu include: fever, head-ache, extreme tiredness, sore throat, cough, stuffy/runny nose, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. (The last 3 are especially common in chil-dren. If these symptoms occur, take your child to the doctor.)

Frequent hand washing, sneezing or coughing into the elbow, and avoiding sick people are all excellent ways to prevent getting sick this winter. (Information from the Center for Disease Control)

If your child does become

ill, please follow these guide-

lines.

A child may return to school when he or she:

does not have a temperature (100.0 degrees or greater) for 24 hours without the use of fever reduc-ing medication,

has been on an antibiotic (if prescribed) for more than 24 hours, has been vomit and / or diarrhea free for more than 24 hours.

Mrs. Sprayberry has been a teacher at BPS for 4 years and is currently teaching first grade. We are HONORED to have such a star teacher at our school! If you see her in the halls, make sure you con-gratulate her! ~ WE LOVE YOU MRS. SPRAYBERRY

Need to change your child’s transportation?

You can do this the following ways:

1. Write it on the orange transportation form located in your child’s folder.

2. Come to the school and make the transportation change in person. ID will be required.

3. Fax (706-861-5798) in a note giving the change of trans-portation along with a phone number so that we can call to verify.

For the safety of your child, we DO NOT allow transpor-tation changes to be made over the telephone. Ex-ceptions may be made with the approval of an Administrator.

We celebrate Red Ribbon Week during the month of Oc-tober. During this time, we emphasize the importance of being loyal to oneself by living a safe, drug free, and healthy life, as well as, the importance of showing kind-ness to one another.

In your child’s folder, you will receive more information about special events during

National Red Ribbon Week October 28-November 1.

What is PBIS?? We are excited about our new school year as we continue to implement our PBIS System. (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) It is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students to achieve social, emotional and academic success. THE CUB WAY is our school wide expectation of being respectful, responsible, and safe problem-solvers. We hope you will join us in celebrating our awesome students as we continue to grow and learn throughout the school year!

My name is Courtney Tillman, and I am a newer member of the BPS family! I work for Georgia HOPE. I provide counseling for students and have an office in the school to provide accessible services. OH! Those sight words!...

Sight words making you CRAZY?! You’re not alone. Many students, and par-ents struggle with learning sight words.

Why are sight words important? They are important because without learn-ing sight words students won’t be able to put words together to read. Many of the sight words are words that are not easily sounded out. That’s why they are called SIGHT WORDS. We learn them by sight alone.

Here are a few FUN WAYS to help your students learn the dreaded sight word list.

1. Make flash cards.

2. Write them in shaving cream with their finger on a table.

3. Try writing them with sidewalk chalk.

4. Try spelling them with letter magnets.

5. Try associating the words with pictures. As an example, for “brown” draw a brown crayon or picture.

6. Play sight word bingo.

7. Set the words to music. Ex., “Hickety Pickety Bumblebee…Will you say the word with me? (red)...Say it (red)...Clap it (one clap)...Spell it (r e d)...Let’s shout it (RED)...Let’s whisper it (red)”

8. Play sight word musical chairs.

9. Play sight word water balloon pop.

10. Play “Go-Fish” using sight word cards.
