The AmericanSociety of NavalEngineers was cre-ated in 1888 as

U.S. naval technology turnedfrom sail to steam. The Society

was formed in the interest ofpublishing a journal “to organize,with the object ofprinting the resultsof experiments,records of trial trips,breakdowns, etc., ofships of the Navy,and also for the pur-pose of readingpapers and dis-cussing the debatablesubjects of naval engineering.”

Members of the Engineer Corpsand recent graduates of the U.S.Naval Academy were recruitedfor membershipin the Society,and subscrip-tions and paidadvertisingwere solicitedfor its journal.Five monthsafter the founding of ASNE, thefirst volume of the Journal of theAmerican Society of NavalEngineers was published. TheSociety and its journal receivedacceptance as the vehicle that

brought naval engi-neering professionalstogether.For 113 years, theSociety’s originalobjectives havebeen preserved andstrengthened tomeet the changingneeds of a time-

honored profession. TodayASNE is the leading profes-sional engineering society

representingscientists,engineers &allied profes-sionals whoconceive,design,develop, test,construct,

outfit, operate & maintainnaval surface, subsurface andair vehicles and their associ-ated systems and subsystems.ASNE also serves the educa-tors who train the profession-als, researchers who renew thetechnology, and innovatorswho bring forth new concepts.
