T he American Society of Naval Engineers was cre- ated in 1888 as U.S. naval technology turned from sail to steam. The Society was formed in the interest of publishing a journal “to organize, with the object of printing the results of experiments, records of trial trips, breakdowns, etc., of ships of the Navy, and also for the pur- pose of reading papers and dis- cussing the debatable subjects of naval engineering.” Members of the Engineer Corps and recent graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy were recruited for membership in the Society, and subscrip- tions and paid advertising were solicited for its journal. Five months after the founding of ASNE, the first volume of the Journal of the American Society of Naval Engineers was published. The Society and its journal received acceptance as the vehicle that brought naval engi- neering professionals together. For 113 years, the Society’s original objectives have been preserved and strengthened to meet the changing needs of a time- honored profession. Today ASNE is the leading profes- sional engineering society representing scientists, engineers & allied profes- sionals who conceive, design, develop, test, construct, outfit, operate & maintain naval surface, subsurface and air vehicles and their associ- ated systems and subsystems. ASNE also serves the educa- tors who train the profession- als, researchers who renew the technology, and innovators who bring forth new concepts.
