PROGRAM LAST WEEK byDanBrown(aspublishedintheAikenStandard)RotarianMikePereyoreturnedtoAikenRotaryClubonMonday,seekingthehelpoffellowRotarians.Helptheyhavegivenwillinglysomanytimesbefore.PereyopraisedtheAikenRotaryClubforitseffortsinthe2015-16WaterFiltrationprojectinthetownofAlotenango,Guatemala,about20milessouthofAntigua,theoldcapitalcityofGuatemala.“Theprojectobjectivewastoprovideawaterpurificationsystemforthehandicappedchildren’sschoolinthetownofAlotenango,whichisrunandadministeredbyvolunteersfromthecommunityandassistedbyRotaryClubsofArea8whichincludesAiken,AikenSunrise,TwinCityandNorthAugusta,”PereyosaidMonday.“Wealsowantedtoprovidecleanwaterforthechildren,pregnantwomenandtheelderly.”Theprojectaffectedapproximately280peopleinthevillage.“Anyextrawaterproducedwillbeprovidedtomembersofthecommunityforadonationtotheschool,”hesaid.

WaterpurificationprojectAikenRotariansfundedtheinstallationofawatercollectiontankontopoftherebuiltschool.ThesystemwaspurchasedlocallyandinstalledwiththehelpofGuatemalanRotariansandlocalcontractors,butfundswereprovidedbytheAikenRotaryClubandaDistrictgrantrequest.“Youhelpedpayforprocessingequipment,andnowthewaterisprocessedandfilteredandchemicals,filtersandeverythingtheyneedforayear.Now,theyareabletosellthebottledwaterandearnmoney.Thiswasaveryhumanitarianproject,andIsaythankyoufromthemtoallofyou.”CONT.ONBACKPAGE

ChildrenofthegarbagedumpNextyear’sprojectfocusesonthechildrenofthegarbagedumpinGuatemalaCity.ThisisanewprojectforGuatemalatoincludealloftheArea8Rotaryclubs.“Thisprojectistocollectclothingforchildrenagesfromnewborntoabout12yearsofage.ThechildrennowliveinshacksatagarbagedumpsiteinGuatemalaCity,”Pereyosaid.“Thereisanassociationformedbyvolunteersofhotelsintheareathatprovideassistancemainlyinleftoverfoodsothatthechildrencanbefedabreakfastandalunchbeforebeingreturnedtothegarbagedumpsitetotheirfamilies.“Thesechildrenhavenothing,”hesaid.“Theyneedshoes,clothes,anythingyoucanspare.”Pereyochannelshiseffortsonchildrenages2to12,andexplainedtoRotarymemberswhy.“Byage13,thechildrendisappearandareswallowedbythestreets,”hesaid.PereyoisanativeofPuertoRico,marriedtohiswifeYvonne,withthreechildrenandsevengrandchildren.Pereyospeaksmultiplelanguages,includingEnglish,SpanishandPortuguese.HecanalsoreadFrenchandItalian.PereyoconcludedbythankinghisfellowRotariansfortheircommitment,hardworkanddedicationtotheseongoingprojectsinGuatemala.“Youhaveprovidedhelptopeoplewhoneeditsotheycantakebettercareofthemselves,andIreallyIappreciatethat.”

ThelastcoupleofweekswementionedalltheministersmembersinourClubwhoholdtheclassificationofReligion-Protestantism.Therearenine.WeomittedDavidPhelpswhoisaministeratSalvationArmy.However,wehaveaseparateclassification(andalwayshavehad)listedas,SalvationArmy,andasfarasonecanremember,wehavealwayshadtheCaptainofthelocalSalvationArmyunitinourClub.Andspeakingofministers,inApril1986weusedministersmembersfortheinvocationsandtheygaveecumenicalprayers.(WouldthatbeanideaforthefuturesincewenumbertenpresentlyinourClub)?Ministersmemberslistedin1986(30yearsago)werePaulPridgen,HenryRussell,BillJohnston,andJimRivers.(Anyoneremembertheseclerics)?

Kalmiatime!Throughoutourwoodsandyards,thepinkKalmiaLatifoliaisinallitsglory.WehaveanunusualspeciesofKalmiaintheAikenarea.Takeawalkoradiveandviewit.ThereisaKalmiaTrailinHitchcockWoodswhereyearsagoErnestineLaw(McDonaldLaw'smother)discoveredapristinewhiteonewhichWoodlandsNurserypropagatedanddistributedandnamed"Ernestine".WilliamGreggin1850builthiselegantplantationhouseatopKalmiaHill(wherethosetrafficlightsarelocated)andnameditKalmia.AndoneofourmemberslivesonKalmiaHill,onKalmiaCircle,behindKalmiaPlaza,andhasKalmiagrowinginabundanceinhisbackyard(#144KalmiaCircle,andinvitesalltotakealook).(Well,well,wenevergetenoughofKalmia,eah)?

APRIL’S STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

BillTuckerintroducedMaxCarroll,ourstudentfromSouthAikenHighSchool,oncemorelastweek.WelearnedthatMaxplanstoattendtheUniversityofSouthCarolina.HeisontheSAHSTennisTeam,participatesontheDECAClub(heisinNashvillethisweekforaDECACompetition),hewasamemberoftheSt.Thaddeusvestry,andheisonStudentCouncilatSAHS.BobNewburnintroducedourSouthAikenBaptiststudent,MelanieHowetotheclubagainlastweek.WefoundoutthatMelaniewasaChancellor’sScholarshiprecipientattheUniversityofSouthCarolinaAikenandplanstoattendthereasshehasalreadytakenseveralcourses.Shehasreceivedatotalof$13,700peryearinscholarships($7000fortheChancellor’sScholarship).MelanieplanstodoublemajorinEngineeringandChemistry.Sheplaystheviolin,isthepresidentofBetaClub,andvolunteersatschoolasalibraryassistantandmusicclassassistant.RalphCourtneyintroducedHollyFulmer,asenioratAikenHighSchool,tothecluboncemorelastweek.HollyplanstoattendClemsonUniversityandwillbepartoftheHonorsProgram.Hollywouldliketostudytobecomeanorthopedicsurgeon.ShehasvolunteeredintheEmergencyRoomatAikenRegional,sheisamemberofStudentCouncil,andshedoespeertutoringto9thgraderseveryday.
