Help they have given willingly so many times before. Pereyo praised the Aiken Rotary Club for its efforts in the 2015-16 Water Filtration project in the town of Alotenango, Guatemala, about 20 miles south of Antigua, the old capital city of Guatemala. “The project objective was to provide a water purification system for the handicapped children’s school in the town of Alotenango, which is run and administered by volunteers from the community and assisted by Rotary Clubs of Area 8 which includes Aiken, Aiken Sunrise, Twin City and North Augusta,” Pereyo said Monday. “We also wanted to provide clean water for the children, pregnant women and the elderly.” The project affected approximately 280 people in the village. “Any extra water produced will be provided to members of the community for a donation to the school,” he said. Water purification project Aiken Rotarians funded the installation of a water collection tank on top of the rebuilt school. The system was purchased locally and installed with the help of Guatemalan Rotarians and local contractors, but funds were provided by the Aiken Rotary Club and a District grant request. “You helped pay for processing equipment, and now the water is processed and filtered and chemicals, filters and everything they need for a year. Now, they are able to sell the bottled water and earn money. This was a very humanitarian project, and I say thank you from them to all of you.” CONT. FROM FRONT PAGE Children of the garbage dump Next year’s project focuses on the children of the garbage dump in Guatemala City. This is a new project for Guatemala to include all of the Area 8 Rotary clubs. “This project is to collect clothing for children ages from newborn to about 12 years of age. The children now live in shacks at a garbage dump site in Guatemala City,” Pereyo said. “There is an association formed by volunteers of hotels in the area that provide assistance mainly in left over food so that the children can be fed a breakfast and a lunch before being returned to the garbage dump site to their families. “These children have nothing,” he said. “They need shoes, clothes, anything you can spare.” Pereyo channels his efforts on children ages 2 to 12, and explained to Rotary members why. “By age 13, the children disappear and are swallowed by the streets,” he said. Pereyo is a native of Puerto Rico, married to his wife Yvonne, with three children and seven grandchildren. Pereyo speaks multiple languages, including English, Spanish and Portuguese. He can also read French and Italian. Pereyo concluded by thanking his fellow Rotarians for their commitment, hard work and dedication to these ongoing projects in Guatemala. “You have provided help to people who need it so they can take better care of themselves, and I really I appreciate that.”
