EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Scope of the Report
The present report being the second cycle of
report for Kharif 2014 covers the results of
field survey based acreage report of rice area
transplanted and Basmati varieties in the
different districts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi,
Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal
Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
Study districts
The study area covers 81 districts, which
includes 22 districts of Punjab, 21 districts of
Haryana, 30 districts of Uttar Pradesh, 4
districts of Uttarakhand, 1 district of Himachal
Pradesh and 3 districts of Jammu & Kashmir.
Rice Acreage
In Punjab, the rice transplanting has been
27,94,000 ha in 22 districts this year. Pusa-
1509 has emerged as predominant variety
after Pusa-1121 in the state occupying almost
2.5 lakh ha. area. Pusa-1121 acreage (5.42
lakh ha) has also increased by 2% over the
last year. CSR-30 also has increased from
18,000 ha. in last year to 43,230 ha this year.
Tarntaran district lead in case of Pusa-1121
occupying 77,890 ha. while in case of Pusa-
1509, Amritsar has been the leading district
occupying 43,150 ha area followed by
TarnTaran. The area under Basmati is
8,57,440 ha out of which the largest area is in
Amritsar (1,30,390 ha), followed by
TaranTaran district (1,26,000 ha). Other
varieties like PB-1 has occupied 24,620 ha
area and Sharbati a Non-Basmati long grain
variety has been transplanted in 38,370 ha.
In Haryana, Out of the total 11.38 lakh ha rice
area transplanted, 8.03 lakh ha has been
estimated under Basmati varieties. Karnal has
been the leading district occupying maximum
area under Basmati (1,28,000 ha) with several
varieties transplanted followed by Kaithal
district (1,16,070 ha). In Haryana, Pusa-1509
has been transplanted in almost every block
under Basmati and has occupied 1,22,490 ha
area in the state. Other varieties grown are
Pusa Basmati-1, Punjab Basmati-3, Pusa-
1401, CSR-30, HBC-19. CSR-30 has again
been preferred by the farmers in the state
and replaced Pusa-1121 in many districts. The
variety occupied 1,33,860 ha area this year.
Crop condition is good, but of course, the
recent rains have given relief to the crop and

the farmers after a continued dry spell for the
initial three months.
In Uttar Pradesh, a total of 14,11,970 ha rice
transplanting has been estimated based on
field survey in 26 districts this year.
Shahjehanpur district has the largest total rice
area (2,21,200 ha), followed by Pilibhit
(1,58,000 ha). Out of the total 3,59,860 ha
Basmati area, Pusa-1121 has occupied
1,87,620 ha, Pusa-1509 1,12,480 ha, Pusa
Basmati-1 46,230 ha and the other varieties,
Basmati-370, CSR-30 and Type-3 have been
transplanted in 13,530 ha. area.
Pusa-1509 variety seed was sold very
enthusiastically in the state but due to lack of
technical information, the farmers
transplanted over mature seedlings and the
disease ‘Bakanae’ has been observed in the
crop which may discourage the farmers to
grow the variety next year.
In Uttarakhand, A total of 1,25,680 ha rice
transplanting has been estimated based on
field survey in 4 districts of the state this year.
Udham Singh Nagar district has the largest
area under rice (94,000 ha). Out of the total
21,370 ha Basmati area, Pusa-1121 has been
transplanted in 4,710 ha, Pusa Basmati-1509,
8,200 ha, PusaBasmati-1 in 1,700 ha and
Type-3 in 6,760 ha. The Udham Singh Nagar
district has the maximum area under Basmati
occupying 10,000 ha. Out of which 6,800 ha
has been transplanted under Pusa-1509.
In Jammu & Kashmir, three districts have
been taken up for the study. The total rice
area is estimated to be 1,42,100 ha in these
districts. Jammu is the leading district with
90,000 ha. Out of 65,640 ha Basmati area,
Basmati -370 has occupied 57,150 ha, Pusa-
1509, 2,200 ha, Pusa-1121, 6,290 ha and the
Non- Basmati long grain Sharbati 10,990 ha.
This year the state has witnessed scanty
rainfall during the initial 3 months of
Monsoon.
In Himachal Pradesh, Only Kangra district has
the Basmati area in the state. Out of 15
blocks of the district, only 3 have Sharbati,
Pusa-1121 and Kasturi Basmati. This year the
transplanting of Basmati has not been very
encouraging due to deficient rainfall and only
450 ha area has been transplanted under
Basmati.
State wise total rice, Basmati varieties area
has been given in table below:

Project BackgroundBasmati rice is an important export
commodity among the food grains exported
from India. During the past few years, the
Basmati export has been growing steadily,
from 7.71 lakh metric tonnes in 2003 to an
estimated 35.0lakh metric tonnes in 2013-14
on robust demand from the traditional
markets in West Asia. Iran alone has been
importing >40% of the total Basmati export
from India. Now China has taken a decision
to import Indian Basmati rice which is likely
to further increase the Indian Basmati
demand.
Timely information on the area and likely
production of the crop before the harvest
helps exporters and other decision makers
involved in Basmati trade to take decisions
about the quantum and time of export. The
export of Basmati is on continuous rise year
by year from India and has reached to
>3.76million by 2013-14. Realizing this
potential, the Basmati Export Development
Foundation (BEDF), New Delhi contracted
M/s. AgriNet Solutions (A division of BPPL –
a UPL Group Company) the work of field
survey validation based acreage estimation
for all rice, for Basmati crop for selected
other non-notified varieties), crop health
monitoring and yield estimation and
production for Basmati rice and non-notified
varieties and questionnaire based sample
survey of farmers, for 75 selected districts of
Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh,
Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu
& Kashmir, apart from Delhi, during Kharif
2011. During the year 2013, the number of
districts has been increased to 81 in the
selected seven states i.e. Punjab, Haryana,
Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal
Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir apart from
Delhi. This year the field survey based
approach is being applied to collect the
information at block level to improve the
accuracy further to a desired level.
The Basmati varieties for which information
is required include Basmati-370, Basmati-
386, Pusa Basmati-6, Punjab Basmati-3
Type-3 (Dehraduni), Taraori (HBC-19),
Ranbir (Basmati–370), Pusa-1509, Pusa
Basmati-1, CSR – 30 and PusaBasmati-1121
and non-notified, non-Basmati (Sharbati and
Sugandha -5).

districts form a part of the Himalayas and the
Indo-Gangeic Plains.
Rainfall
The Basmati growing belt in all the states has
witnessed deficient to scanty rainfall in the
months of June, July & August this year
leading to delayed transplanting and early
earing of Pusa-1509. In Uttar Pradesh, the
major western districts received scanty rainfall
and facing electricity crunch due to which the
crop is looking weak and yield reduction is
expected. The new variety Pusa-1509 has
occupied the area from other non-Basmati
early maturing rices. The rainfall during 1
June to 03 Sept. 2014 in meteorological
divisions under study area is given in table-1
and the rainfall in prominent districts in table-

Ground Survey based Rice Acreage
HARYANA
In Haryana, the total rice acreage based on
field survey has been estimated at 11,38,000
ha in 21 districts. The preliminary survey has
revealed that almost 8.03 lakh ha is
transplanted under various Basmati varieties.
Karnal and Kaithal are occupying largest area
under Basmati varieties. Interestingly, after 2
years, CSR-30 has again got significance and
preferred by the farmers occupying 1.33 lakh
ha area. Though the early maturing variety
Pusa-1509 has also occupied >1.22 lakh ha
area but the area under Pusa-1121 reduced
indicating a varietal shift again.
The district wise area figures under Basmati
varieties have been given in Table-3 and
block wise in annexure.
PUNJAB
1. A total of 27.94 lakh ha. area has been
transplanted in the state this year. Whereas
last year 27.41 lakh ha area was transplanted.
Basmati has occupied 8.57 lakh ha and the
area under Basmati varieties has increased by
almost 45%.
2. After Pusa-1121, the other variety
transplanted in the major area state under
Basmati is Pusa-1509 (>2.47 lakh ha. Pusa-
1121 has increased about 2% in comparison
to last year. PB-1 and CSR-30 have again got
some significance by the farmers and has
been transplanted in >24,000 ha. and 43,000
ha. area respectively.
3. Sharbati and Pusa-1509 have reached at
harvesting stage. The productivity is likely to
be 3.5-4.0 tons/ha.
4. Heavy rainfall during the first week of
September may cause 2-3% yield losses to
Sharbati and Pusa-1509.
5. Water inundation is observed in few villages
of Mansa district, which may damage the
cotton crop.
The district-wise acreage under total rice and
Basmati rice is given in Table-4 and block
wise in the annexure.
W. UTTAR PRADESH
In 30 districts of Basmati growing belt, a total
14.12 lakh ha area could be transplanted this
year due to deficient rainfall during the
transplanting time. The area under Pusa-1121
has been 1.88 lakh ha. area and Pusa-1509
has emerged as a second predominant
variety covering 1.12 lakh ha. area. CSR-30 is
recognized by the farmers this year in the
Report Volume-2 (September, 2014)
Page 11 of 46AgriNet Solutions
area which has occupied 12,270 ha. area.
Long grain Non-Basmati variety Sugandha
has increased by 34% replacing Pusa-1121.
The area under Pusa-1121 has decreased
due to more incidence of Bakanae. In case of
Pusa-1509 the yield losses are expected due
to water scarcity during the flowering & milky
stages. The crop health is very weak. Almost
8-10% crop of Pusa-1509 flowered in early
stage due to over mature seedling
transplantation (30-35 days). Power supply
has been a constraint for irrigation in the
area.
Pusa-1509 has reached to its maturity stage,
while Pusa-1121 is at vegetative stage. Some
arrival of Pusa Basmati-1509 from Potato
dominant belt is reported in Jahangirabad
mandi. The Crop Cutting Experiments are yet
to start but productivity may range between
3.5-4.0 tons/ha.
District wise acreage transplanted rice as on
7thAugust, 2014 is given Table-9 and Seed
Information in Table -4.
UTTARAKHAND
The rainfall was normal during the months of
June & July in Hardwar and Nainital, while
Dehradun and Udham Singh Nagar have
received deficient rain spell.Pusa-1509 has
been transplanted in >8,000 ha. area in the
state. Some area in Udham Singh Nagar was
transplanted early in March with Pusa-1509,
and the produce has started reaching the
mandies.
The district wise acreage is given in Table-7
and Block wise acreage in annexure.
JAMMU & KASHMIR
The rice transplanting in Jammu & Kashmir
started late due to late onset of monsoon.
The farmers have opted for Pusa-1509 too
apart from Pusa-1121 this year in few
important blocks of Kathua. Both Jammu and
Kathua districts have received deficient rainfall
during the months of June, July& August. But
recently in first week of September, there has
been a heavy rainfall causing a flood like
situation. The area under Pusa-1121 and
Sharbati has increased significantly this year
mainly in Kathua district.
The estimated variety wiseBasmati area in the
districts is given in Table 9.
HIMACHAL PRADESH
Only 10,000 ha. area has been transplanted
in major Basmati growing district Kangra in
the state this year due to deficient rainfall
Report Volume-2 (September, 2014)

during the months of June & July. Almost
30% area couldn’t be transplanted.
The total rice and Basmati acreage in Kangra
district of Himachal Pradesh during Kharif-
2014 is given Table-12.
