A storytelling hotel.
The past 200 years – just five generations – has seen Tasmania forge an
incredibly distinct character, patriotism and unity among its people. This
robust new culture has emerged from a melding of founding cultures: our
indigenous ancestors, early European settlement and convict extradition.
Such an intense period of character shaping is testament to the bold
human spirit of those that share this island, a spirit that has borne many
incredible character stories. Such stories simply must be shared.

Why a storytelling hotel?
The typical visitor to Tasmania seeks so much more than cocktails and selfies;
instead drawn by adventure, learning, authentic experience and genuine
connection. With this in mind, we have created a new category of hotel, a
storytelling hotel, that goes well beyond mere historical interpretation, to
become an immersive storytelling experience.
Our guests are engaged in the historical narrative at
every touchpoint through our architecture, interior design,
multimedia, food & beverage and most importantly our
people – all set against a backdrop of relaxed luxury.
Such immersion in the character stories of Tasmania
creates a deeper understanding of our destination
and a more meaningful connection to place.

Reflecting what makes us Tasmanian.
Tasmania has a rich and captivating history featuring a cast of remarkable
characters, each with an intriguing story to tell. Together as a people, we have
developed a unique spirit and culture informed by five distinct character traits:
1. Colourful & Quirky
2. Hearty & Resilient
3. Curious & Creative
4. Grounded, Yet Exceptional
5. Fighting Believer
Each of these character traits is represented throughout
MACq 01 Hotel, most notably in the design and fitout of
our rooms and suites. For example, rooms which reflect
the Hearty & Resilient character trait may exhibit quality
timbers and leather furniture; whereas those reflecting
the Colourful & Quirky character trait are more likely to
exhibit vibrant artworks and creative décor.
Room designed to represent character trait: Colourful & Quirky.

114 Doors; 114 Characters.
Of the many who have influenced the evolution of the Tasmanian culture, we tell
the stories of just 114 characters ranging from our native people to our inventors,
explorers, convicts and heroes. Each of our 114 rooms and suites tells the story of
a separate character, with a unique illustration on every door and artefacts
relating to that character inside.
Our 114 characters each embody one of the five Tasmanian traits. A character
whose story exemplifies the Fighting Believer is represented in a room designed
to also reflect that character trait – and so it goes for each of the 114 characters
across the five traits.
At time of check-in, guests will learn which Tasmanian trait their room reflects, but
they will not discover their character story until they arrive at the door!
As a little girl, playing around her home at Judbury,
Frances Amy Lillian Sherwin sang, and imagined herself
as being discovered like the ‘Swedish Nightingale’,
Jenny Lind. By the end of her career she was known as
‘The Tasmanian Nightingale’ as well as receiving the
ultimate accolade of Prima Donna Assoluta.

Grounded, Yet Exceptional
A storytelling hotel.
A hotel of informal luxury.
At MACq 01 Hotel, we offer a variety of rooms and suites, each characterised
by a generous floorplan and high-quality fitout. Our style of luxury is relaxed and
informal – less about Egyptian cotton sheets and fine crystal glassware and
more about comfort, warmth and culture. Our giant leather lounge suites may
be top-of-the-range, but they were built for afternoon naps – not tea parties.
A backdrop of breathtaking beauty.
One of the earliest sites of European settlement
in Tasmania, MACq 01 Hotel occupies arguably
the best real estate in Hobart with front row
seats to the vast River Derwent, magnificent
Mount Wellington and charismatic waterfront
precinct. Situated on the working docks of
Hobart’s Old Wharf and surrounded by fishing
boats and convict-built sandstone warehouses,
this site was once the working district of Hunter
Island, connected to the shore of Sullivan’s
Cove by a narrow causeway. Today, known as
Hunter Street, the neighbourhood boasts some
of Tasmania’s favourite restaurants, cafes and
markets, with a backdrop of such artistic
beauty it appears almost surreal.

Stories are to be experienced – it’s all in the delivery.
Connecting our guests with the stories of Tasmania underlies everything we do.
This is reflected in the hotel amenities and service style, but we also take it one
step further by offering a Master Storyteller with his team of full-time storytellers.
These talented professionals take our guests on an engaging journey through
MACq 01 Hotel, connecting them with the various design elements and
incredible display of historical artefacts which punctuate our hallways and
common areas. Our storytellers also take guests on an adventure throughout
the Hobart waterfront, discovering the dark secrets and triumphant tales of
Sullivan’s Cove, Salamanca Place and beyond.

Adventure with a drink and full belly.
The ground floor of MACq 01 is home to The Story Bar,
Old Wharf Restaurant and an atmospheric Lounge.
Our Story Bar is inspired by the egalitarian nature of
Tasmanian society where class divisions are less obvious,
and so offers a drinks list ranging from local draught beer
to the very best wine and spirits. Old Wharf Restaurant – website here – has
been inspired by the early industries of whaling, shipping, farming and mining.
The open kitchen serves incredible local seafood and produce, accompanied
by a huge list of local and international wines. The Lounge celebrates our
indigenous heritage, with extraordinary artefacts dating back centuries.
Throughout each of these venues is frequent entertainment, engaging
storytelling and exceptional views over the Derwent Estuary.

MACq 01 media modicums.
1. The design concepts for MACq 01 Hotel have been developed by a
boutique agency of interior designers Pike Withers, whose design objective was
to create a curiosity and intrigue for what the story might be in each space,
rather than a literal interpretation of it.
2. The name MACq 01 comes from the hotel’s location on MacQuarie Wharf.
The original shipping shed in that location, known as MacQuarie 1, was
removed and the hotel was built as a replica with design enhancements. The
neighbouring Cruise Ship terminal is called Mac 02.
3. The complex in which MACq 01 Hotel is situated has been developed by
Tasmanian building firm, Vos Construction. The complex name is Macquarie
Wharf No.1 and is also host to several other tenants on the ground floor
including a restaurant by local vineyard Frogmore Creek. The complex has cost
approx. $36 million to build.
4. MACq 01 Hotel has been developed by the Tourism arm of Federal Group,
who also own and operate The Henry Jones Art Hotel and Saffire Freycinet.
