Science Academies’ 107th Refresher Course
on

INTRODUCTION:
The 107th Science Academies’ Refresher course in Experimental Physics
was held in the Government College (Autonomous) , Rourkela, from June 4th to
19th, 2019. The course director was Prof. R.Srinivasan, IASc. The resource
persons were

3. Dr. Manish Dev Sharma, Punjab University,
Chandigarh
4. Dr. Sanat Kumar Mukherjee, BIT, Ranchi
The Course coordinator was
Dr. Bishwanath Parija, Govt. Auto. College, Rourkela.
Prof. Srinivasan and the resource persons unpacked the boxes of equipment and
assembled the experiments sequentially in the laboratory on 3rd June.
INAUGURATION
The participants to the course registered for the course at 9-30 AM on 4 June
and received the course material. A list of participants is given in Appendix 2.
Dr. Debendranath Behera, the principal of Government Autonomous
College, Rourkela, presided at the Inaugural function at 10-30 AM. He delivered
the welcome address and introduced the guest.
The course director, Prof. R. Srinivasan, spoke about the Genesis of Science
Academies’ refresher course in experimental physics and the Academies
involvement in conducting programs to improve science education in the country.
He also explained how experimental physics is valuable in the course curriculum
of the universities to make Physics more understandable and enjoyable.
The chief guest Prof. (Dr.) Simanchala Panigrahi (Chairman Executive
Committee, GACR) also explained how theoretical approach should be flavoured
with the experimental techniques. He also talked about his interest in experimental
physics and how this helped him to be more successful in his life. He blessed the
function with his esteemed presence.

The course coordinator Dr. Bishwanath Parija (Asst. Professor, GACR)
highlighted the schedule of 107th Refresher course in Experimental Physics and
called upon the participants to make the best use of the training program. He also
emphasized the excitement involved in the participation in such a refresher course
and the role of refresher courses in faculty development. He gave a vote of thanks
and closed the inauguration program.
The lectures started thereafter.
PROGRAM
The program consisted of 24 lectures on the experiments delivered by the
resource persons, two discussion sessions, two Special lectures, seventeen
laboratory sessions and three sessions of presentation by participants.
A copy of the time table is attached in Appendix 3.
One special lecture on Nobel Prize in Physics for 2018 was delivered by
Prof. R. Srinivasan and the second special lecture on Nanoscience and technology
was delivered by Dr. Simanchala Panigrahi of the Department of Physics, NIT,
Rourkela.
There were seventeen presentations, one by each of the seventeen groups, on
one experiment each. The presentation was spread over three one hour sessions.
The presentations were appreciated by Prof. Srinivasan.

EXCURSION AND ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAM
A full day excursion was arranged for all the participants on Sunday 9 June
to Hanuman Vatika, Ranisati mandir, Mandira Dam and Vedvyas Temple.
On Sunday 16 June at 6-30 PM an entertainment program was arranged in
the college. This was followed by special dinner. The participants enjoyed the
excursion and the entertainment program.

VALEDICTORY PROGRAM AND DISTRIBUTION
OF CERTIFICATES
The course came to a conclusion with the Valedictory Program on
Wednesday 19 June at 11-30 AM. Sj. Sarada Prasad Nayak (Honourable MLA of
Rourkela) was the Chief Guest. Dr. Debendranath Behera (Principal of
Government Autonomous College, Rourkela), and Prof. (Dr) Pravat Kumar
Mallick (member of academic council, GACR) were also present.
Dr. Biswanath Parija gave a brief report on the course. A few participants
expressed their appreciation of the course and thanked the resource persons for
their help. Prof. R. Srinivasan thanked Dr. Parija and his colleagues for making
excellent arrangements for the course. He thanked the participants for their
sincerity in doing the experiments and the excellence of their presentations. He
presented a standard kit as gift to the college from the three Science Academies.
The Chief Guest made appropriate comments. Dr. Parija gave a vote of thanks.
Certificates were presented to all the participants by Prof. Srinivasan. The
resource persons were presented with mementos by the Chief guest.
Appendix 6 contains a couple of photographs of the valedictory function.
