Introduction to Academies: A Personalized Education Plan for Every Student

Background: Careers in the 21st Century require higher academic and technical skills. Research suggests thatover the next five years many new job titles along with new skill sets will enter the workforce and careerfields. To prepare for this challenging new labor market, it is the goal of the Clay County School District toadapt an educational approach and instructional method for our students that will meet the demands of theever-changing job and career fields of the future.

In that endeavor, all 9th grade students will select an Academy upon enrolling in high school. Academies are atype of school-within-a-school that provides a college preparatory curriculum with a career-related theme.Academies provide challenging, coherent course sequences that are a roadmap to future career goals. Theyshare three basic features:

First, academies are small learning communities. An academy is comprised of a group of students who willhave the same teachers and may share several classes each year. Teachers from academic and technical disci-plines meet with each other on a regular basis and share in decision-making related to curriculum, content,and instruction.

Second, academies combine a college preparatory curriculum with a career theme. Academic courses thatmeet high school graduation and college entrance requirements are linked with career and technical coursesthat focus on the academy’s field of work. Teachers coordinate course content and instructional strategiesthat adapt to every student’s aptitude and academic ability. College and career counseling informs studentsabout options for planning for employment and further education.

Third, academies embody partnerships with employers. It is the goal of the Academies of Clay to include rep-resentatives from local employers within the working community. Representatives from around the regionwill give advice on curriculum, appear as guest speakers in classes, assist in the supervision of student intern-ships/job shadowing, and serve as mentors for students.

Academies offer flexible plans of study which are organized around different career fields and academic rigor.They allow students the flexibility to change their career direction as new knowledge and skills are acquired.Students are encouraged to pursue the strongest course of study possible that provides more opportunitiesfor success. Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, and Honors classes may be taken by all students whoqualify, regardless of academy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which academy I will be in next year?A student will be placed in an academy based on the electives they chose on their course selec-tion sheet for the 2015-2016 school year.

Which academy offers Dual Enrollment or Advanced Placement classes?Each academy may have specific Dual Enrollment or AP courses as part of its curriculum.These classes may be taken by all students who qualify, regardless of academy.

Can I change my academy in my next year of high school?Yes. Students may change their first elective choice and academy during their sophomore year.It is to the students’ benefit to complete a sequence of courses within their elective program togain “completer” status. The completion of a progression of a minimum of three courses, in thesame program of study, provides a student with an in-depth knowledge of one subject areaand/or certification. Additionally, they become eligible for the Bright Futures Gold Seal Schol-arship, if they meet GPA and other requirements.

Can I be in more than one academy?No, the students’ first elective choice places them in an academy. However, the students’other elective choices may be outside their academy. The students are identified as being amember of their first choice’s academy. The students will attend their other electives with stu-dents who may be identified with other academies.

How does my academy affect my English, math, science and social studies classes?Each academy has teachers in the areas of English, math, science and social studies who workwith these specific programs. The students in these academies will share these same English,math, science and social studies teachers. These teachers have the opportunity to use cross-curricular projects to teach their subjects and implement smaller learning communities withinthe school.

Policies and Procedures

Upcoming 9th graders for the 2015-2016 school year: All upcoming 9th graders should fill out the course selection sheet for their zoned high

school even if they intend to apply to another school by the date published on the school’scourse selection sheet.

All course selection sheets are due to the zoned high schools by the date published on theschool’s course selection sheet. If a form is received after this date a student may be placedwhere there is space within their zoned high school which might not be a first choice.

Only upcoming 9th and 10th grade students will be allowed to apply to an academy that isnot at their zoned high school.

If an upcoming 9th grader wants to attend a school outside their zoned area: Students must be Clay County residents. We do not expect there to be many open spots at high schools for upcoming 9th or 10th

graders to move from their zoned high school. Students must fill out their course selection sheet for their zoned high school. Remember

there might not be a space at the school you want to attend. We will not be able to deter-mine this before the course selection sheets are due.

Students must have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA, no excessive absences and no severe disci-pline issues as an 8th grader.

Applications to attend a school out of zone will be accepted online during the month ofMarch. The link to apply will be on the School District of Clay County web page:www.oneclay.net starting March 1st. The link will be taken down March 31st. If you haveany questions you can contact the CTE office at (904) 284-6574.

If the school has any open spaces after the zoned students have been placed, names will bedrawn via lottery in May. We will not know if there are spaces available until after thecourse selection deadline and students that are zoned for that high school are placed.

All students who apply online to attend a non-zoned school will be notified of acceptanceor denial by letter. If you receive an acceptance letter, you can then start the Special PupilAssignment (SPA) for Academies process.

For those on an SPA - if a student is removed from an academy, or has a schedule changeout of the academy they will be sent back to their home high school the following week.

SPA’s will be reviewed for grades, attendance and behavior. If standards are not being met,the SPA can and will be revoked.

SPA’s will not be granted if there is a similar program at the zoned high school.

What are the diploma options?

Students must successfully complete one of the followingdiploma options: 24-credit standard diploma 18-credit Academically Challenging Curriculum to

What are the state assessment requirements?

Students must pass the following statewide assessments: Grade 10 ELA (or ACT/SAT concordant score) Algebra I end-of-course (EOC) or a comparative score on

the Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (P.E.R.T.)

Students must participate in the EOC assessments and theresults constitute 30 percent of the final course grade. Theseassessments are in the following subjects: Algebra I Biology I Geometry U.S. History Algebra II (if enrolled)

What is the credit acceleration program (CAP)?

This program allows a student to earn high school credit if thestudent passes a statewide course assessment withoutenrollment in the course. The courses include the followingsubjects: Algebra I Geometry U.S. History Biology I Algebra II

What are the requirements for the 24-credit standarddiploma option?

In addition to meeting the 24-credit standard high schooldiploma requirements, a student must

The Florida College System

Includes 28 state colleges. These institutions offer career-related certificates and two-year associate degrees thatprepare students to transfer to a bachelor’s degree program orto enter jobs requiring specific skills. Many also offerbaccalaureate degrees in high-demand fields. Florida CollegeSystem institutions have an open door policy. This means thatstudents who have earned a standard high school diploma,have earned a high school equivalency diploma or havedemonstrated success in postsecondary coursework will beadmitted to an associate degree program.

Florida also offers students 46 accredited career and technicalcenters throughout the state, which provide the education andcertification necessary to work in a particular career ortechnical field. Academy of Business and LeadershipROTCAre you interested in competing at a Regional, and eventually National level in rifle, precisiondrill, academics, or orienteering? Then NJROTC is the class for you. Being a part of NJROTCmeans self-satisfaction, pride in yourself and unit, lifelong friends and opportunities that extendpast high school.

Business/Digital DesignThis track allows students to engage in programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Flashand InDesign. “I decided to join this academy because I love computers and being creative. I’mhoping to earn my Photoshop certification by the end of the year,” Kailee Donaldson explained.This class also helps prepare students to dive deeper into computer program software. “I ex-pected to use image creating software, but InDesign was much different and showed me how todesign layouts for things like a yearbook or a newspaper,” Chris Figueroa clarified.

Culinary ArtsThrough completion of this program, students are prepared for employment in various aspectsof the food-service industry, advanced culinary education, and post-secondary options. Course-work includes food preparation and serving, purchasing and identifying foods, food safety prac-tices, use of equipment, knife skills, and professional practices for success in the field of culinaryarts.

Academy of Law and Emergency ServicesCriminal JusticeThis pathway teaches you everything from crime scene processing to defensive tactics. Stu-dents will learn how the criminal justice system works and will participate in mock trials. Youwill practice taking 911 calls from other students, learn what a professional legal assistant does,how to be a police service aid officer, and of course how to become a police officer. Whenasked about what this pathway did for him, Bryant Wiggins, 2008 graduate stated, “I was wellprepared to enter the Police Academy and passed the state exam in January 2009 to become aClay County Deputy.”

HealthStudents in the health science pathway are eligible to sit for the Certified Nursing Assistant(CNA) exam upon program completion. During their Junior/Senior years, students have the op-tion to choose between three different tracts including Allied Health Assisting, Nursing Assistingand First Responder. Currently students participate in clinical experiences at various area clini-cal and geriatric facilities providing them the opportunity to get hands-on experience in thefield.

Academy of Manufacturing & Vet. AssistingAutomotiveIn the Clay High Auto Technology program, students will learn about automotive mechanicaltheory in modern automobiles. Students will also learn hands on skills in an automotive shopthat is as close as possible to an actual automotive service center. All students who completefour years of the Clay High Automotive Technology program will be eligible for end of coursetest & certificate. Also, students who wish to continue a career in the automotive field maytake ASE certification tests.

CarpentryUpon completion of the carpentry pathway, students are fully qualified for entry level positionsin construction, a variety of building professions, as well as post-secondary educational opportu-nities. A.I.C.E. Academy (by application only)AICE is a rigorous, internationally recognized pre-university curriculum provided by CambridgeUniversity in England. Academy of Teaching and LearningEarly Childhood EducationThe Academy of Teaching and Learning is an exciting first step for students interested in a careerin education. With an on-site childcare, students get hands-on, real world experiences in a vari-ety of settings related to early childhood education. Students will be eligible for the Departmentof Children and Families 40-hour state certification.

Academy of Visual and Performing ArtsFashion and Design ServicesFashion Technology and Design Services is a four year program of study that allows students togain an understanding of the connections that exist between their education and the workplace.Students combine concepts they learn in career and academic courses to further their knowl-edge in fashion/design by creating theme based projects relevant in their course of study.Theater/Musical TheaterTheater I includes an overview of theater history, discussions about plays, and an introductionto the fundamentals of stage movement, make-up, cost, costuming, set construction and light-ing. Students will begin to understand the inter-play between various “systems” in a structure.

VyStar Academy of Business and FinanceFinanceThe high school and VyStar Credit Union have formed a unique partnership and commitment tobusiness and education. The finance curriculum focuses on preparing students for employmentwithin the financial industry. With an on-campus student run VyStar Credit Union branch, se-lected students apply learned knowledge and skills to the daily operations of a fully functionalcredit union.Hospitality and TourismThis exciting new program offers students the opportunity to learn about the hospitality andtourism industry through hands-on learning. Field trips and guest speakers bring real world ex-periences into the classroom. Projects include wedding planning, designing a restaurant, andpreparing cuisine from the world!

Academy of Arts, Health & Human ServicesCulinary ArtsThe Culinary Arts career pathway provides instruction regarding careers in the Hospitality andTourism career cluster. The content includes the development of leadership skills, communica-tion skills, employability skills, resource management, and exploration of culinary related ca-reers. Sanitation safe practices and proper use of culinary tools/ equipment are stressed. In-struction and learning activities are provided in a state-of-the-art laboratory setting. Studentsmay earn the Certified Food Protection Manager (ServSafe) industry certification.

Health Science (Future Health Professional)Students in the Health Science pathway are eligible to sit for the Certified Nursing Assistant(CNA) exam upon program completion. During their Senior year, students have the option tochoose between Allied Health Assisting and Nursing Assisting. Students currently participate inclinical experiences at various area clinical and geriatric facilities providing them the opportunityto get hands-on experience in the field.

TV ProductionThe purpose of this program is to prepare students for initial employment as television produc-tion operators, television broadcast technicians, camera operator, video recording engineers,and audio recording engineers. Students will be prepared for overall production of televisionstudio activities including: scripts, lighting, shooting and directing, electronic news gathering,and field production.

Visual & Performing ArtsThe Visual & Performing Arts career pathway is designed for students who have an interest inthe arts (Art, Band, Chorus, Theatre). This pathway is ideal for the student who is especially interested inagriculture as a post-secondary career. CarpentryThe Carpentry career pathway is designed to teach students the knowledge and skills in differ-ent phases of construction, cabinetmaking, layout, fabrication, assembly, installation, and car-pentry repair.
