It’s Kids’ Quest! Catechism Club— a club program from CP!What is Kids’ Quest! Catechism Club?Kids’ Quest is a fun-packed 36-week program designed to assist churches to incorporate the teaching and learning of catechism into their Christian Education programs.
Music, games, art, written activities, and lots of repetition reinforce the teaching and help the children memorize the answers to the questions. However, the goal of Kids’ Quest is not only memorization, but also an initial understanding that will lay a foun-dation for the children’s belief and trust in God through Jesus Christ. Learning First Catechism is excellent preparation for studying the Westminster Shorter Catechism.
Who is Kids’ Quest! Catechism Club for?Kids’ Quest is designed for two age groups: Beginning Kids’ Quest for preschoolers (ages four and five) and Kids’ Quest for elementary (first through fourth graders). However, Kids’ Quest is flexible enough to include younger and older ages.
Each department consists of three volumes with 12 lessons in each volume. Sections of each lesson in Teacher’s Manuals can be used in order or mixed and matched according to the needs and time frame of a particular church program.
When can Kids’ Quest! Catechism Club be used? The club program can be used on Sunday nights, Wednesday nights, as a summer program, as a school-year program, or at other times in the Christian Education department.
How can I use Kids’ Quest! Catechism Club?Kids’ Quest is appropriate for many different settings and time slots—structure your program to fit your unique needs.
• One-year school program, September–June. Use the program in its entirety with both age groups.
• Two-year program for smaller churches, September–June. Start with Beginning Kids’ Quest for all children and move the children who complete it into Kids’ Quest the next year.
• Two-year program, September–June using both departments, two weeks for each lesson [the first week covering the lesson, the second week reviewing the lesson and concentrating on memorization/recitation].
• One volume at a time. For example, a church may use one volume for each age group during the summer for three summers. Other churches may decide to use individual volumes or portions of volumes as modules to teach particular topics to their children.

As the children arrive, ask the parents to fill out a 4" x 6" card with the child’s name, address, telephone number, birth date, grade in school and names of parents for you to keep in the classroom. Have them write down any food allergies as well. After the children are settled, say Hi, kids! Welcome to our Catechism Club. I have two special friends I want you to meet. Cassie and Caleb, where are you? Hold up the puppets and have them face the children.
Puppets: Here we are!Teacher: Boys and girls, meet Cassie and Caleb.Puppets: Hi, everybody.Teacher: Cassie and Caleb, I want you to help the boys and
girls learn the catechism.Caleb: Cat-uh what?Cassie: Oh, I love cats. This is going to be fun.Caleb: Not cats, Cassie. She said caterpillars. She’s going to
teach us about caterpillars. This is going to be great!Teacher: No, no. The catechism is a little book of questions
and answers.Cassie: Oh. Questions and answers about what?Teacher: These are questions and answers that will help you
understand more about God and the Bible.Cassie: Oh, okay. But I still like cats.Caleb: And I like caterpillars.Teacher: I think you are going to like the catechism, too.
The catechism will help you to think like God thinks. Today we are going to learn the answers to questions 1–5. These questions teach us where we came from and why we are here. Cassie and Caleb, take your First Catechism book and go study. I’ll call you in a little while and see if you can help me teach these answers to the boys and girls.
Put the puppets away. Briefly explain the catechism program, emphasizing that every club has rules. Show the children a First Catechism booklet, the Recitation Chart (p. 12), and the Attendance/Recitation Poster. Explain your recitation procedure and awards system (see Introduction, p. 8). If the children will receive an award for reciting the entire catechism, explain how that will work. Before you begin the teaching time, ask the children to stand and sing “This Is the Day” (CD track 1).
Instructions for making the Cassie and Caleb stick puppets are on the backs of TA1b and TA1c. Optional: use a boy and girl puppet if you have them available.
