UO physicists and their collaborators on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland, recently announced the discovery of a new particle that may be the elusive Higgs Boson. What is the Higgs Boson? What other mysteries of the universe are discovery targets of the collider experiments? What is “dark matter?” What is “dark energy?” These and other topics at the forefront of physics will be discussed as University of Oregon physics professor James Brau leads the audience on a journey exploring the structure of the universe, its behavior, and its history.
Brau leads a team of UO physicists working on this largest scientific experiment in the world. The lecture will examine how research at Earth-based particle accelerators aim for answers to questions posed by the universe and how it could revolutionize our view of nature as dramatically as the advances of Einstein and other quantum pioneers 100 years ago. The presentation is intended for a general audience and will be enjoyable for anyone interested in physics and astronomy.
