The Zambia Union of Nurses
Organisation (ZUNO) has urged government to invest in long term training of health workers, while ensuring availability of drugs, health information systems, appropriate infrastructure, delivering equitable and quality services as well as sufficient public financing. ZUNO President Mr. Liseli Sitali highlighted this when delivering his speech during the International Nurses Day celebrations in Lusaka, held under the theme “Nurses: A force for change: Improving health systems’ resilience”. Mr Sitali noted that there is a strong link between the economic status and the general health of a population. “A sustainable health system has three key attributes: affordability, for patients and families, employers and the government; acceptability to key constituents, including patients and health professionals; and adaptability, because health and health care needs are not static.” Mr Sitali continued.
Several high ranking officials including the Permanent Secretary Dr. Peter Mwaba, and Directors in the Ministry of Health attended event on 12 May 2016. Delivering a speech on behalf of Dr Mwaba, Director of Policy and Planning Mr.Davy Chimfwembe recognized the role of Nurses in bringing about change to strengthen health systems. “Government stands ready to support nurses where possible and will continue to lend an ear to their voice on improving the health care systems in the country.” He stated.
The Celebrations kicked-off with a walk from Munali Girls Secondary School to ZUNO headquarters in PHI, where the celebrations were hosted. Over 500 nurses attended the event characterised by song, dance, poetry and awards giving. Close to 25 institutions were represented exhibiting various health care services offered. Nurses across the country held similar
activities to commemorate the day.
