Severe shortage of IPv4 address in China

By later June 2010, Chinese online population, already the world’s largest, expands to 420 million, accounting for 21.3% of

world total. While there is only 8.49% of IPv4 addresses in China, 0.595 address per capita (0.605 by later 2009).

Demands forDemands for IP addressIP address

Total net demands for IP address: 11.5billion (in 5 years)Given the address allocation efficiency of 33%,34.5billion addresses are needed, about 8 times the capacity of IPv4

addresses

Mobile internet: 1billion

The Internet of Things: 10billion

Fixed internet: 5 to 6 hundred million

Internet penetration of China is

31.8%, which is expected to be 45%

by the year of 2015 and 60% by the

year 2020.

New applications (Mobile internet,

Internet of things, etc) have huge

demands for IP address.

Security Transition

Overall progress on IPv6 standards in China is basically consistent with international standards

Innovations have been made in the standards of the classes of transition and security (eg, soft ray technique, IVI technology, source address validation)

National standards regarding network protocol and equipment can already meet the national demands for IPv6 network construction. However, the standards of the classes of transition and application have not come of age, and need for key research.

In China,IPv6 products are mainly in the field of network equipment; equipment manufacturers and R&D institutes have developed a large quantity of IPv6 products; key technologies developed by China, such as IPv6 carrier network equipment, have already caught up with advanced international level.Chinese manufacturers are less involved themselves in such fields as terminal, chip, protocol stack, operating system and application software, and much rely on oversea related manufacturers; obvious limit factors still exist in these fields.

The largest pure IPv6 Internet IPv6 networks have

been set up, including 6 backbone networks, 2

international switching centers and 273 premise

networks.

——6 backbone networks: CernetII, China Telecom,

China Unicom, China Netcom/Chinese Academy of

Sciences, China Mobile and China Tietong.

——CNGI international/national interconnection

centers in Beijing and Shanghai connect the 6

backbone networks to the Next Generation Internet

in US, Europe and the Asian-Pacific region.

——IPv6 premise networks have been set up in 100

colleges and universities, 100 R&D organizations and

73 enterprises.

The CNGI Beijing

Interconnection Center put the IPv6

Olympic official website mirror

image site into operation, and the

IPv6 video monitoring and sensor

system developed was successfully

applied in 48 stadiums across the

country

CNGI project sent the high-resolution remote sensing images about the affected area, collected by a European Joint Research Center satellite, to the Center for Earth Observation and Digital Earth of Chinese Academy of Sciences in a real-time manner

‘Hunan Agricultural

Comprehensive Monitoring

System’, based on IPv6 the

Internet of Things and

constructed domestic telecom

operators, was awarded by

international IPv6 the first IPv6

Enabled ISP authentication

certificate.
