Lauren Agnello addresses the Rotary Club

“Democracy must be learned by every generation.” At Friday’s Rotary

Breakfast, keynote speaker Lauren Agnello told the club of the Youth and

Government program’s motto and its commitment to helping students learn

about the legislative, judicial and other branches of governance.

A student of Seneca Valley High School and former Rotary Youth Exchange

student, Lauren described YAG as a statewide program that enables students

to learn about government by immersing themselves into its processes.

Students write and debate legislative bills. Other students take the role of

judges. Others act as representatives of the press in covering the

governmental stories, featuring the students. And more.

Lauren is in a group of about 20 students that make up the Rose E. Schneider

delegation, which meets at the YMCA facility in Cranberry.

The group is raising funds for a trip to Harrisburg, where they will take over

the Pennsylvania State Capitol for several days. The cost for each student is

$570, which covers transportation, some meals and other expenses. The cost

has increased this year, which makes it even more crucial that they raise

needed monies for the trip. The group is asking local organizations and

individuals to help financially support this program that is not funded by the

school district.

The local group is also planning some service projects involving food drives

for those in need.

A co-president of the Rotary-supported Interact Club at Seneca Valley High

School, Lauren also talked of that group’s progress in its first year. They are

up to about 30 members and are planning efforts to help the community and

world with service and fundraising projects.

Beth Marshall introduced Lauren

Carroll Cooper gave 2 – Archie made it to North Carolina and Craig is

already there, and her grandson won the state wrestling championship in

North Carolina.

Lauren, our guest speaker, thanked our club for having her today.

Don Ridgley got an email from Nelson, the principal of the school we help in

Honduras, thanking us for our recent donation towards new uniforms for the

students (see Photo Gallery below).

General Business and Announcements

The club discussed what cause should be the beneficiary of our upcoming

pancake breakfast. Pat Boylan suggested Parents in Toto, the local

organization that helps children with autism and their families. After a club

vote to decide between a few groups, Parents in Toto was selected.

Mark Bruno has 15 sponsors for the placemats we’re printing for upcoming

pancake breakfasts. He reported we’re up to 27 sponsors who have bought

ads for our Sponsor Boards. We need 3 more to fill two full boards. Let Mark

know of businesses or organizations to fill these remaining spots.

We are continuing to ask members and friends to donate their used shoes for

Chosen International. Steve Schultz at Insurance Services of Zelienople and

Beth Marshall at Marshall Hair Salon are drop off sites.

Photo Gallery—Honduras School From the school in Honduras that we help, Principal Nelson wrote to thank

the Rotary Club of Zelienople. He said we made it possible for 61 of the

poorest students to have the school uniforms they need to attend classes.

Nelson sent the photos below. Don Ridgley noticed that Nelson was wearing

the Zelienople Rotary shirt that we gave him when he visited our club several

years ago.
