Don Ridgley Describes Time Spent in
Jamaica—as Child & in Recent Years
2
At the Friday morning Rotary Breakfast, keynote speaker Don Ridgley recounted
his life in Jamaica—first as a boy in 1960-1961 and later as an adult during several
subsequent visits.
Jamaica is an island nation of 2.9 million in the Caribbean. It achieved its
independence from the British in 1962. Don presented facts and history.
Around 1960, Don’s father was asked to go to Jamaica to remodel a hotel and
nightclub. Their family lived in rooms on the 3rd floor of the hotel. Don showed the
club many photographs of celebrities who visited the nightclub, including Lucille
Ball, Vivien Leigh and Aristotle Onassis. Some of those photos appear below.
Don has since returned many times, visiting the boys school he attended, Cornwall
College, the Montego Bay Rotary Club, a nursing home and more.
