Wow, what a great experi-

ence zeb magazine has

been so far! Our first issue garnered so much excite-

ment among our staff, and among members of the

Club and the Juventus community — we even un-

covered some ―closet‖ juventini.

It has been wonderful to read people’s com-

ments, to hear their feedback, and to listen to ideas

and suggestions inspired by people’s desire to be-

come part of this magazine and its process.

So thank you to everyone who embraced the

idea of this publication, to those who had a hand in

constructing this season’s magazine (both crea-

tively and structurally), and to those who read our

first issue and picked up this second one to see

what’s new.

It’s wonderful to know that the Juventus spirit is

alive and thriving in Toronto!

I can’t even put into words

how rewarding this

magazine experience has been. To have a

hand not only in harvesting people’s enthusiasm

but also being able to generate it is so exciting!

It’s not just that zeb has sparked a new interest in

our team, our Club, and our community, it’s that

we are able to inspire people. Readers sent in

letters and e-mail, Julia and I were approached

at the Club Headquarters, on the street, even at

the supermarket, by people telling us that they

read the magazine, that they loved it and that

they want to contribute. Thank you to all those

people for their support! It is this feeling of

comunita` that the magazine generates which

makes this experience memorable.

A special thank you to Valentina Karacic who

rescued this issue of our magazine from the

depths of file corruption.

Cari amici Juventini,

Sembra ieri che abbiamo intra-

preso questo percorso chiamato

progetto CLUB DOC, e invece sono

passati già tanti anni. Il tempo, ter-

mometro della nostra vita, scorre

inesorabile e puntualmente ci pre-

senta il suo conto: siamo già giunti

alla seconda edizione di questa

pubblicazione unica nel suo genere

e verosibilmente produttiva. La di-

rezione delle sorelle Pace si è rive-

lata impeccabile, piena di notizie

diramate con piglio di vero giornal-

ismo.

Dicevo che il tempo passa,il

campionato è iniziato con indizi al-

quanto sorprendenti: il Milan non ha

voglia di vincere; l'Inter vera mac-

china da guerra (solo Moratti può

distruggerla); la Roma deludente

anche nella scelta del nuovo

a l l e n a t o r e , m e n t r e

sono curiosamente intriganti so-

cietà come Napoli, Sampdoria,

Lazio, Fiorentina, Genoa, e chi più

ne ha più ne metta.

E la nostra Juventus? Tranquilli.

Ho già avuto modo di pronunciarmi

su Ferrara: è affidabilissimo, a volte

mi sembra di rivedere Lippi dei primi

anni.

Le nostre attività organizzative

sono riprese a spron battuto, ab-

biamo tanta strada da fare e tanti

programmi da realizzare.Parlando

con diversi Presidenti di Club du-

rante la mia lunga permanenza in

Italia, siamo concordi nell'affermare

With over 24 years of experience, my commitment to provide you

my very best Professional Real Estate Service

Though I liked your magazine, I was surprised that there were no responses to what I perceive to be offensive comments to our Club and members, particularly from officials and fans of other teams, both here and in Italy. Your magazine gives you a unique forum in which to voice our displeasure at being treated so wrongly. Why did you not take this opportunity to re-spond? RL, Woodbridge Dear RL, Our reasons for publishing a magazine were to promote our Club and our team. While we welcome constructive criti-cism of teams, players, as well as our Club, it was never our intention to cre-ate a publication to be used as method

for attack on others. We are here to en-courage people to see the beauty and feel passion in our sport. While we may write critically about soccer issues (games, tactics, player selection) which we may deem "incorrect" we will not attack others for their opinions. On a more practical level, we are all a part of a community and we have friends that are fans of others teams too and, while we do question their judgment, they deserve as much respect from us as we expect from them.

I was looking at your contact infor-mation. Why are there so many dif-ferent addresses for the Juve Club? CP, Ottawa Dear CP, Our Club has many functions, both ad-

ministrative and social. We have an ad-dress for the Club Headquarters (on Winges Rd.) which is where members can gather together to socialize and watch games. We have an administra-tive address (on Keswick Rd.) where official correspondence can be sent which, oftentimes, needs to be attended to in a timely manner. zeb magazine has a separate address (on Sonny St.) for the Magazine Committee to take care of magazine issues.

This year, instead of pulling in a host of players to try and build up, Juventus

has decided to purchase a few key, high-caliber players that are certain

to bring their expertise to the game. Given the strength that our team is dis-

playing at this point, it seems like this tactic was right on the ball (no pun in-

tended). We at zeb want to highlight the players that made this summer transfer and

who promise to bring us hope and, with any luck, a few trophies

IN BRIEF: IN BRIEF: BOUGHT Diego (c. Werder Brema) Fabio Cannavaro (d. Real Madrid) Martin Caceres (d. Barcelona) Felipe Melo (c. Fiorentina) Fabio Grosso (d. Monaco) SOLD Olof Mellberg (d. Olympiacos) Pavel Nedved (c. Svincolato) Dario Knezevic (d. Livorno) Albin Ekdal (c. Siena) Marco Marchionni (c. Fiorentina) Cristiano Zanetti (c. Fiorentina) Silva Falque Yago (c. Bari) NEW COACH: Ciro Ferrara

Diego Ribas da Cunha started out

impressing club teams in his native

Brazil, signing for Santos at the age of

12. He's come a long way since

then, even receiving calls to the

Brazilian National Team in 2004. It

was when he began playing for

Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga in

2006 that he really began to catch

the eye of the international public.

The "attacking midfielder" has dem-

onstrated his exceptional passing

skills, brilliant technical ability and

inventive plays. When he is on the

field, his passion is always evident.

After signing for Juventus this sum-

mer, La Gazzetta dello Sport labeled

him the best import of Serie A. While

expectations are high, having seen

what we have so far this season, we

are confident that he can deliver.

Fabio Cannavaro has spent

most of his soccer career play-

ing in the Italian Serie A with

the exception of 3 years in the

Liga before returning to Juven-

tus this year. His illustrious ca-

reer has netted him numerous

Club and National champion-

ships and cups, and it was he

who captained the Italian Na-

tional Team in its 2006 World

Cup victory. In that same

year, Cannavaro became

the first defender (as well

as the oldest recipient) of

the FIFA World Player of

the Year Award. Can-

navaro promises a solidity

in defence which he

brings to the table as an

older and more experi-

enced player. His capa-

bility on the field is not only

important in terms of what

he can contribute to Juventus

defence but also in what infor-

mation and skill he can impart

to the younger Juventus de-

fenders who can look to him

for guidance. His great lead-

ership skills in defence makes

this center-back an important

re-acquisition both for the im-

mediate and long-range fu-

ture of the team.

Uruguayan na-

tional Martin

Caceres comes

to the black

and white this

year on loan

from Barcelona.

The 22 year old

has played on

Uruguay's under

20 team in the

2007 FIFA U-20

World Cup and

now features on the

senior team. The cen-

tral defender, who has

been known to also

play both right and left

back, is noted for his

areal power, speed

and aggression. His

skills appear to be quite

advanced for one so

young and he has of-

ten been praised for

being able to take a

firm hand in defence.

He has already scored

his first goal with Juven-

tus against Lazio this

year and shows great

promise in his ability to

execute the tasks given

to him by Ferrara.

Page 11: Zeb 1.2 - Fall 2009

9 zeb 1.2

Brazilian-born Felipe

Melo caught the eye

of Fiorentina scouts

in 2008 after he

played a successful

first season with

Almeria in Spain.

After signing with the

viola, Brazilian coach

Dunga noticed him

and called him up

for his national team.

It was in fact his per-

formance at the

Confederation Cup

with Brazil in the sum-

mer of 2009 that

brought the Juventus

attention on him and

he was subsequently

signed with the bian-

coneri. The 26 year

old brings a much-needed dynamism to the Juventus

midfield. His style is very compact and uncomplicated,

often the best ingredient for a flowing midfield which

promises to be brimming with ideas. In a climate where

expectations are high, it bodes well that Mela has al-

ready scored his first goal for Juventus against Roma this

season.

As a player, Ciro

Ferrara is one of the

most decorated ever:

7 Serie A champion-

ships, 3 Italian Super

Cups, 1 Champions

League Cup, 1 UEFA

Cup, 1 Intercontinental

Cup and 1 European

Supercup. This is not

forgetting his career

with the Italian national

team where he boasts

49 appearances.

Though he retired from playing in 2005, he always re-

mained a part of the action, making up part of the

technical staff for the 2006 World Cup winning team.

After the World Cup he joined the Juventus staff in the

youth section until he was named interim Head

Coach in May 2009 and then confirmed as such for

the following season. Ferrara seems to have a well-

focused vision of how he wants the team to work. His

ideas appear to be clear both in essence and execu-

tion. This allows him to be able to pinpoint areas that

need strength and the players required to obtain just

that quality. This clarity of connection between the

Coach and players is exactly what Juventus needs in

order to obtain victories in all this year's endevours.

It took 119 minutes of heart stopping

action. And then it came. With a per-

fect pass from Andrea Pirlo, Fabio

Grosso curled a beautiful shot past the

German goalkeeper, leading Italy to

what turned out to be the path to

World Cup glory as he scored the win-

ning penalty shot against France in the

World Cup final.

Now, Juventus has brought the World

Champion left-back home after a two-

year spell with Lyon in France. The an-

nouncement came on August 31, and

was met with great enthusiasm by Ju-

ventini worldwide. But no one was

happier than the World Champion.

―I am happy, very happy," he told ju-

ventus.it. "I returned home. I really

wanted to come to Juve and I man-

aged to make this dream come true.

In my career, I have always made

choices that satisfied me."

Born in Rome on November 28, 1977,

Grosso’s family hails from Chieti in

Abruzzo. Raised in Chieti, Grosso

played a number of seasons with Re-

nato Curi Angolana, an amateur team

of the Abruzzo Eccellenza division, and

debuted at a professional level with

Calcio Chieti of Serie C2.

In 2001, Grosso joined Perugia and with

this came his debut in Serie A. While

there, coach Serse Cosmi transformed

the player into a left back. The newly

christened left back received his first

Italy cap in 2003.

For the next five seasons, Grosso

played for Palermo (while they were in

Serie B, 2004-2006), Inter Milan (2006-

07) and Lyon.

Juventus spent the summer courting

the 31-year-old, but Lyon and the Ital-

ian giants finally agreed to a fee of €3

million (C $4.7 million), with the player

being paid €1.2 million (C $1.9 million)

a year.

The Azzurri took to the field with

the intention of exhibiting their

worth to the sold

-out crowd in

Tiblisi. Though

L ipp i ' s men

came out strong

in the first 20

minutes of the

game, penetrat-

ing the Geor-

gian defence

quickly and

causing some

s c r a m b l i n g

along the de-

fensive line, they

lacked the ca-

pacity to pro-

vide the final

touch - a goal - in order to solidify

what many saw as their sole pur-

pose on the field. Ultimately, the

constant pressure created by the

Azzurri lead to 2 own-goals by

Georgian captain Kaladze. A win

in such a manner was disappoint-

ing for many but that would

sweep away the opportunities

created by Italians, opportunities

which showed inspiration, creativ-

ity and decisiveness. Many times,

the only thing that was missing

was that pinch of luck often

needed in a game. One thing

that did stand out was the domi-

nating presence of 5 Juventus

players on the field that day. Buf-

fon, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Camo-

ranesi and Iaquinta worked hard

c o n j u r i n g u p

chances, pushing

forward, and creat-

ing pressure. They

demonstrated that

their continuous

calls to the national

side are not only

due to their individ-

ual strengths but

also to their com-

bined capacity to un-

derstand each other

on the field. Though, in

the end, the Azzurri

seemed to lack some

conviction, it’s the

hope that Lippi’s men

furnished that was in-

spiring.

LA PAROLA ALL'AVVERSARIO

PRE-PARTITA

Io sono romano e romanista. Se mi

state ancora leggendo significa che

o Iaquinta. A parte tutto questo c'è

un'ultima variabile impazzita del cal-

cio: le punizioni dei due numeri 10,

leggete il loro curriculum per capire.

Per concludere una battuta per gli

scommettitori: piuttosto che sul risul-

tato puntate sulla stretta di mano tra

Totti e Poulsen: è molto ben pagata!

DOPO-PARTITA

Ciro Ferrara ricambia il favore a

Claudio Ranieri liberando la pan-

china della Roma. Evidentemente

ondo.

poteva star fuori. Da romanista che

ha visto negli anni tante partite con-

testate, stavolta posso solo ap-

plaudire un mercato intelligente e

una squadra combattiva al punto

giusto! Complimenti!

A SHOUT-OUT TO…..

zeb Magazine would like to send out

a special "thank you" to the Soccer

Fanatics. It is encouraging to find a

group of people and a program

that, week after week, continues to

display such a passion for the sport.

Each of us sees a bit of ourselves in

one of the panel members and we

are always happy to have a voice

out there - whether it's for comment-

ing, scrutinizing, or boasting. They do

every week what we can only at-

tempt to do quarterly through our

magazine. The editors send a par-

ticular shout out to Gina Bucci (girl

power!!) for representing us in a fo-

rum where we women are vastly un-

derrepresented, and for being a pio-

neer in demonstrating that women

have intelligent things to say in a soc-

cer discourse.

OUT OF TOWN

On November 14th, the Club Juven-

tus Gaetano Scirea Ottawa will host

its annual gala at Sala San Marco,

215 Preston St, Ottawa. In an effort to

help the victims of the Abruzzo earth-

quake, they have invited Edoardo

from CHIN International Radio to host

the Deal or No Deal show, and to

help raise funds for the many af-

fected families of the earthquake.

Tickets are $45 and include a five

course meal, dancing, and pizza in

the late evening. Also, the Club will

be unveiling a photo presentation

from this year’s trip to Torino. For

more information, please contact

Cristina del Castello at

[email protected].

Hope see you there!

NEW IN TOWN

Summer 2009 brought the Juventus

We at zeb were so excited about the launch of our first issue that

you can only imagine how happy were when family, friends and

members showed up at the Club Headquarters in order to show

their support. There was food (thanks to Lanterna Ristorante), con-

versation, zebras to colour, prizes to give away, and all around gen-

eral merriment. The feedback we received was amazing - thank

you! That solidified our belief that this magazine project was not

only worthwhile but necessary in order encourage a closer bond

between Juventus Club DOC Toronto members, juventini in general

and those within our community. Thank you to everyone who

came out to see us and who have read and supported zeb maga-

August marked this year's Annual

Juventus Club DOC Toronto Picnic.

It's always a pleasure to meet mem-

bers and have an arena in which to

exchange ideas, partake in good

conversation and play some games.

This year, again, both food and fun

were not lacking. Between the

porchetta and the pasta e fagioli

there was enough for everyone.

The afternoon was filled with soccer

and bocce games, a raffle, mem-

bership sign-ups, and zeb magazine

discussions. We thank everyone that

came out to the picnic and we

can't wait to see you at our next

event!

Many organizations have ways to honour those whom they believe exemplify the traits for which the organization

stands. It’s for this reason that we have now instituted a zeb magazine -Wall of Fame. Members will be able to

vote for a Juventus player, past or present, who they believe shows true juventinitá, that is, passion for the game

and the necessary skill to demonstrate his gifts on the field. For this issue we begin our inductee

process by naming Roberto Baggio as worthy of placement on our Wall of Fame.

This was how the Italian-

speaking world remembers

the Divine Ponytail. The

champion from Caldogno

remains to this day one of

the purest talents ever to

kick a ball for his country.

He was also one of the

game's most intriguing

characters. Although he

played for the Azzurri and

all of Italy's three big sides,

none of them ever quite

lived up to the thrill of his

stay with Juventus. It is easy

to forget just how much of

a talent Baggio was in 1994

dragging the Azzurri on his

back (or ponytail) all the

way to the finals of the

World Cup. If it had not

been for his pinpoint finish

against Nigeria their tourna-

ment might have ended

there. Having fought back

from knee surgery as a

teenager, we were lucky to

see him play for as long as

he did and when he retired

there wasn't a single fan

anywhere who didn't feel

the loss of this great player!

He is possibly the only

player currently alive who

can claim to be the best

the world has ever seen in

his position who has played

for Juve and the National

side.

JUVE FACT: Two Juventus players have been

honoured with the Golden Boot, awarded to the top goal scorer at the World cup: Paolo Rossi, 1982, and Salvatore Schillaci, 1990

On a nice summer afternoon, I faith-

fully attended the Club Juventus

Gaetano Scirea Ottawa members

meeting as I have always done

since I turned 18. The annual meet-

ing took place in May, where mem-

bers discussed Juve’s performance

throughout Serie A, the objectives of

the Club, upcoming events and,

most importantly, elected members

to the executive committee.

Little did I know that day would be

the beginning of a black and white

adventure. The members of the

Club Juventus Gaetano Scirea Ot-

tawa, elected me as their new Presi-

dent. I was surprised and honoured

that the members selected me to

take on such a role. However, I

was shy and unsure if I could step

up to the plate.

A year has gone by and I have

experienced things that I could

have only dreamt of…To name a

few: participating in a live inter-

view on la Giostra dei Gol, travel-

ling to Torino, taking pictures with

Juventus Superstars such as Ales-

sandro Del Piero, Gigi Buffon and

Gianluca Pessotto, attending a

big Juventus

match at the

Stadio Olim-

p i c o , a n d

cheering on

the Juventus

players from

the front row

seats.

All this was

made possible

with a simple e-

mail I sent to

Fausto Di Ber-

ardino, Presi

dent of Club

Juventus DOC

Roberto

Bettega

Toronto.

When I began my role as President I

conducted different searches for

Juventus fan clubs across Canada,

and was eager to learn how other

clubs were organized. The one site

that caught my immediate atten-

tion was the Club Juventus DOC

Roberto Bettega website. I began

to follow the

different links

of the site, and

read up on the

progetto DOC.

I later con-

tacted Fausto

and discussed

in further detail

the progetto

DOC and how

the Ottawa

c o m m u n i t y

could apply it.

Since that first e-mail, President

Fausto Di Berardino has invited us to

participate in their activities and

events, and has made us experi-

ence what it truly means to be a

DOC member. On behalf of the

Club Juventus Gaetano Scirea Ot-

tawa members, I would like to thank

Signor Fausto Di Berardino for taking

members of the Ottawa Juventus

Club on this black and white adven-

ture, and for supporting the Club

Juventus Gaetano Scirea Ottawa.

The Club Juventus DOC Roberto

Bettega Toronto is one of great suc-

cess and accomplishments that we

respect, admire and continue to

learn from.

Vincenzo Carlucci

Ecco la seconda parte del rac-

conto della nascita del nostro Club.

Era la sera del 30 di settembre 2005, e

il comitato si era riunito al COPPI

Ristorante, il nostro punto di riferi-

mento da mesi,grazie alla generositá

del propretario Fausto Di Berardino

che da alcuni mesi, era anche un

consigliere del club.

Dopo varie consultazioni nei giorni

precedenti, quella sera DI BER-

ARDINO divenne Presidente dopo un

voto all’unanimità e accettò l'in-

carico con molto entusiasmo. Aveva

molte capacità ed esperienza nel

campo manageriale ed in pochis-

simo tempo ci fece fare quel salto di

qualità,del quale avevamo proprio

bisogno.Nello stesso periodo a

TORINO ,il centro coordinamento

della Juventus aveva cambiato

tante cose. Era nato lo JUVENTUS

CLUB DOC per facilitare i rapporti

con i club sparsi nel mondo; per

partecipare a questo nuovo pro-

getto c'erano delle regole da rispet-

tare; almeno 150 soci, una sede, un

sito web ed un computer per comu-

nicare via e-mail con il centro coordi-

n a m e n t o .

Ricordo bene come il nuovo Presi-

dente DI BERARDINO, che era molto

conosciuto nell'ambiente, perchè

anni addietro aveva lavorato come

Policaro, aveva portato nuovo entu-

siasmo nella comunità Juventina.

Cosí fu possible, in poco tempo, rag-

giungere tutti i traguardi.

La festa della consegna delle

nuove TESSERE DOC il 15 gennaio

2006 alla Riviera Banquet, per la

prima volta a Toronto fu un avveni-

mento importante. A fine marzo la

nuova Sede era bella e pronto, gra-

zie soprattutto all'aiuto di tanti nostri

soci che avevano lavorato per rinno-

vare il posto. Dopo aver raggiunto il

traguardo della sede, l’evento che

aspettavamo da tanto tempo: an-

dare a Torino per vedere due partite,

u n a d i cha mp i on s l ea gu e

(ARSENAL),e una di campionato

(FIORENTINA); il sogno si av-

verava. Per la prima volta il club Ju-

ventus doc organizza una spedizione

a Torino,grazie sopratutto al lavoro

del nuovo Presidente. Fu una grande

gioia essere vicini ai nostri beniamini.

Poi arrivó Calciopoli e la Juve in

serie B. Per molti club fu un disas-

tro.

V o r r e i c o n c l u d e r e c o n

questo; anche se ci sono stati mo-

menti di difficoltà, il club comunque

è andato avanti fino ad oggi grazie

sopratutto a quelle persone gli hanno

voluto bene.

Ringrazio tutti e FORZA JUVE.

"eccezionale‖

- Domenico del Cataldi Supermar-

ket, per averci offerto degli ottimi

prodotti

- Alex del Coppi Ristorante per

averci offerto una deliziosa

porchetta che tutti abbiamo degus-

tato

- le seguenti ditte e persone che

hanno offerto dei premi per sorteg-

giare: Cataldi Supermarket,

G/M Globe Wholesales, Franco

Luciani, Longo Supermarket, Apex

Autolette Store, Serafino Paglia del

C.I.P. Group.

- Nadia Ciccone e Tiziana Pace

per averci intrattenuto con dell'ot-

tima musica italiana anni 60/70

- un ringraziamento particolare

all'amico Alfonso Ciasca per avermi

dato l'opportunitá d'intervenire al

suo programma radiofonico della

CHIN e di parlare del nostro picnic

che era in via di svolgimento

- Gino Cunti per aver provato a

captare il segnale televisivo per po-

ter vedere in diretta la prima partita

della Juve.

Naturalmente un grazie di vero

cuore va anche a tutto il Direttivo

del nostro Club, impegnatosi nei vari

aspetti della preparazione del nostro

picnic.

Cari soci, come potete constatare,

quest'estate?

Luciani: Sono rimasto molto soddis-

fatto; la squadra si é rinforzata, ed

ora si puo competere sotto ogni

aspetto. Penso che Diego possa

fare piú differenza di Etó e Milito

perché loro hanno bisogno di

essere serviti mentre Diego é un gio-

catore completo.

Bonavota: Ottima, specialmente

con la conferma di certi grandi:

Iaquinta, DelPiero, Amauri e

Trezeguet. Il grande colpo sorpresa

di Melo fortifica il centrocampo.

Questa é una squadra al massimo

tra la serie B e adesso.

L: Il ritorno del grande Cannavaro.

Un grande orchestra con un con-

duttore. Mi dispiace per

la perdita di Crescito, ma sono con-

tento per Grosso.

Commenti sull'inizio del cam-

pionato?

L: Abbastanza positivo, il massimo in

quattro partite. Non potevano

iniziare in un modo migliore di

questo anche se c'é ancora tanta

strada da fare.

B: Abbiamo cominciato con delle

squadre difficili.

In questo inizio di Champions

League, che cosa pensate della

prestazione dei bianconeri?

L: Non é stato un bicchiere mezzo

pieno o mezzo vuoto; aspettavamo

una vittoria, come tutti. Sappiamo

tutti che in Europa é piú difficile.

B: Qualcosa in piú potevamo fare in

Coppa. C’é stata un pó di sfortuna

e tanti infortuni. Forse ho sottovalu-

tato il Bordeaux ma avevamo

parecchi giocatori fuori causa. Del

Piero ci manca specialmente in

queste partite di Coppa ma sono

fiducioso che passeremo il turno. Che pensate della guida di Ferrara?

B: All’inizio ero pessimista perché

non conoscievo i nuovi dirigenti, ma

le cose sono andate bene fino ad

adesso.

gran manager. Ma forse stanno

pensando al futuro e io non lo

vedo. Prima davo a loro un 5 su 10.

Adesso gli dó 7 su 10. Stanno miglio-

rando. Si stanno muovendo tantis-

simo e adesso sono piú ottimista di

prima.

L: Tutto sommato, in tre anni

(malgrado degli sbagli) dalla serie B

alla Chamipons, si sono comportati

abbastanza bene, anche se penso

che un Direttore Tecnico miglio-

rebbe tutto. Se pensiamo che

avevano un programma per la

Juve per i prossimi cinque anni e

invece ci siamo arrivati in tre anni,

va proprio bene. La scelta di

Ferrara, perché é un allenatore e

un giocatore, é ottima. Ha un ec-

celente disposizione.

Cosa ci dite dell'organico dei gio-

catori in generale?

L: Abbiamo giá parlato di Diego.

Marchisio é un grande: ha raggi-

unto la nazionale. Delusione da

Giovinco.

Sisoko,

lo stiamo aspettando, crediamo

molto in lui. Stiamo aspettando

tanti altri: Diego, Melo, Sissoko,

Marchisio. Questi quattro ci devono

dare tanto, poi quello che aggiun-

gono gli altri sará il bonus. L'anno

scorso abbiamo perso Sisoko al mo-

mento piú importante. Non metto in

discussione il grande Del Piero: sto

aspettando che si faccia vedere in

Coppa. Poi c'é sempre il grande

Buffon.

Per finire, dando uno sguardo al

campionato in questo momento

[l'intervista é stata fatto il

21 settembre], siete piú ottimisti o

piú pessimisti?

B: Soffriremo ma superemo il turno.

L'unico punto negativo é che ab-

biamo giá tanti infortuni e potreb-

bero improvisamente diventare in-

fortuni gravi. Speriamo che fac-

ciano parte, come dice Ferrara, del

gioco e non della preparazione

tecnica.

sempre. Per uno sguardo da vicino a

giocatori Juventini del passato,

abbiamo chiesto aiuto al nostro

corrispondente estero, Francesco

Mastrorizzi

Leaving our team doesn't mean

they’ve left their glory days behind!

For an in-depth look at the lives of

former Juve players, we asked our

Foreign Correspondent, Francesco

Mastrorizzi, for help from the other

side of the ocean

Lo chiamavano il falegname

calciatore, non perché fosse un

difensore abituato a falciare le

gambe degli attaccanti avversari,

ma perchè prima di arrivare in serie

A lavorava in una fabbrica di mobili

in Lombardia e giocava in una

piccola squadra di calcio di

dilettanti, la Caratese. Stiamo

bianconero.

E’ Giovanni Trapattoni, dopo

averlo notato durante

un’amichevole, a portarlo alla Juve

nell’estate del 92 per tre partite di

prova con la maglia bianconera e

da quel momento la sua vita

cambia completamente. Perché il

provino va bene e per pochi milioni

di lire Moreno approda alla squadra

più importante d’Italia, facendo in

un colpo solo un salto di quattro

categorie. E la sua favola non

finisce qui. Presto si guadagna il

posto da titolare fisso nell’undici

juventino e quello stesso anno arriva

la conquista del primo trofeo, la

Coppa UEFA. Nel 94 ecco arrivare

anche la prima convocazione in

nazionale da parte di Arrigo Sacchi.

Dal “Trap” si passa a Marcello

Lippi, ma la musica non cambia:

Moreno resta un punto fermo anche

nella Juventus più vincente degli

ultimi venti anni. Tra il 94 e il 96

Torricelli gioca le sue stagioni

migliori. Conquista lo scudetto, la

Coppa Italia, la Champions League,

la Coppa Intercontinentale, la

Supercoppa Europea e la

Supercoppa Italiana, disputando

partite memorabili per intensità e

determinazione.

miglior giocatore in campo.

Ora la sua proverbiale grinta

Moreno ha deciso di portarla in

panchina, diventando allenatore a

soli 39 anni. La sua nuova carriera è

iniziata da pochissimo. Nel 2007/08

la sua prima esperienza, che gli

permette di inserirsi nell’ambiente,

come allenatore degli Esordienti

Regionali della Fiorentina, ruolo che

condivide con Massimo Orlando.

Nel febbraio del 2009 viene

contattato dai dirigenti della

Pistoiese, squadra che milita nel

campionato di Prima Divisione della

Lega Pro (ex serie C1), e Torricelli, in

possesso del patentino di allenatore

professionista di Prima Categoria,

accetta senza esitazioni di allenare

la squadra toscana. L'esordio non è

molto felice: nonostante l’insperato

pareggio sul difficile campo del

Foggia, Torricelli si fa espellere per

p r o t e s t e

dopo soli 19

minuti. Con

David Trezeguet

( e s t a t e 2 0 0 0 ) .

Quando segna il

golden gol nella fi-

nale degli Europei

nel 2000, è gia un

giocatore juventino.

Pochi quel giorno

avrebbero immagi-

dando prova, senza discussioni e in

modo costante negli anni, di essere

il più forte portiere del mondo.

Pavel Nedved (estate 2001). Anche

lui, così come Buffon e Thuram, vi-

ene acquistato con le cessioni mil-

ionarie di Zidane e Inzaghi. Durante

a diverse squadre negli anni succes-

sivi. Ma in coincidenza con la sua

conversione religiosa anche le sue

prestazioni in campo sono de-

cisamente migliorate, facendolo

diventare con Ranieri titolare fisso.

Fabio Cannavaro

(estate 2004). L’Inter

lo considerava un

giocatore ormai fi-

nito, così la Juve ha

pensato bene di ac-

quistarlo per fargli

fare coppia con

Thuram nella Juve di

Capello. Ed ecco arrivare due sta-

gioni straordinarie (con altrettanti

scudetti) culminate con lo strepitoso

Mondiale di Germania e il conse-

guente Pallone d’Oro.

Giorgio Chiellini (estate 2005). Arri-

vato alla Juve come terzino sinistro,

fornisce da subito buone prestazioni,

che gli garantiscono il posto da tito-

lare. Ma nel 2007 avviene la svolta.

Ranieri lo trasforma in centrale difen-

sivo e da quel momento diventa un

pilastro irrinunciabile della difesa bi-

anconera e uno dei migliori al

mondo nel suo ruolo.

Vincenzo Iaquinta (estate 2007). Sin

izzativa, segnando diversi gol impor-

tanti.

Mohamed Sissoko

(gennaio 2008).

Forse il primo vero

grande acquisto

del la patetica

nuova gestione ju-

ventina. Diventa

idolo della tifoseria

sin dalla prima

volta che scende in campo. Le sue

prestazioni sono irrinunciabili per la

squadra, il suo contributo in mezzo al

campo fondamentale sia in fase

difensiva che in fase offensiva: una

forza della natura.

Amauri (estate 2008). Arriva dal Pal-

ermo per rafforzare il già forte

reparto offensivo. La sua prima sta-

gione inizia alla grande con gol a

raffica e buone prestazioni. Poi la

sua media gol comincia a calare,

ma molto importante rimane il la-

voro che fa per la squadra, come

pure i movimenti all’interno dell’area avversaria.

In this issue, we look at per-

sonal style. Being juventini, it

is always important that we present our-

selves in a stylish manner. While some

looks are good for the stands of a soccer

stadium, around town it’s a different story.

In picture A, our model Christina is decked

out in the Juventus jersey, scarf, gloves,

tote bag, and ring, sure to turn a few

heads on the street.....for all the wrong

reasons. Her look is made up of so many

different elements that's it's hard to focus

anywhere and, therefore, the look seems

loud and confused. In picture B, though

her exposition of Juventus products is a

little more modest, she looks very stylish.

One or two chosen pieces allow the

viewer to focus and capture the essence

and beauty of the pieces. We still know

that she is a Juve fan, and she looks

graceful and exuberant at the same time.

Remember that fierce Juventus attitude

that we spoke about last time? That is al-

ways a necessary accessory.

The first stone upon which

to build a team able to win

a Scudetto is undoubtedly

Gigi Buffon, a goalkeeper

without rival in the world

who, if he could save a

few more games, would

be considered a super-

hero. It is widely accepted

that when it comes to

goaltending nobody does

it better than Gigi. Juven-

tus, having produced a

wide variety of stoppers

who ranged from the

physically imposing, sly and

cynically ruthless to the

more accomplished, intelli-

gent and elegant incarna-

tion of a Da Vinci master

piece, has long been

viewed as the home of the

goaltender. Blessed with

legends such as Zoff and

Peruzzi, to name a few, it's

understandable why the

Juventus side has master-

minded the fine art of

goaltending, thus, allowing

the defense to do their

thing without any pressure.

Soccer in Torino under

Ferrara may not be of the

champagne variety, but it

has proved to be flexible

and practical. Those ingre-

dients will undoubtedly be

essential if Juventus is to

finish the campaign in the

Champions league - an

objective that, at this point

in history, is a lot more im-

portant than winning the

Scudetto.

Gino Mete

This year marked the 20 year anni-

versary of the death of beloved Ju-

ventus sweeper Gaetano Scirea. In

memory of his excellence both on

and off the

field, he is

this issue's

featured

player in our

Player Pro-

files section.

When

Gaetano

Scirea trans-

ferred to

Juventus

from Ata-

lanta in

1974, he not

only became a part of the one of

the most successful and loved clubs

in soccer history, but he began leav-

ing what would become an unmis-

takable mark in the lives of all ju-

ventini. He was a proficient techni-

cal defender who played with grace

and style. He could stand along the

defensive line as well as push for-

ward in order to create and often

score goals. It is not by chance that

Gaetano Scirea is one of only five

players in European

soccer history (along with Cabrini,

Brio, Tacconi and Blind) to have won

all soccer club trophies recognized

by UEFA and FIFA. His skill was appar-

ent to all and he excelled quickly as

a libero. His move later on in his ca-

reer to a more central defender did

nothing to lessen his strength in his

field.

Scirea was known not only for his

great sportsmanship and fair play on

the field (never having received a

red card

in his ca-

reer), but

he was

also

know for

his nota-

ble class

off the

field.

With his

move to

Juventus

he was

able to

grab the

attention of the national team

coach who called him up to play for

Italy in December of that same year.

During his more than a decade long

stint on the Italian team, he was irre-

placeable as a leading defender as

well as a member of the 1982 World

Just because you are always the responsible one

does not mean that others cannot be trusted with

Your mood can stretch to both extremes and that starts to

worry those around you. It’s not necessary to hold a

grudge; some things are just not that important. Your

unique personality will draw people to you but it will ulti-

mately be what pushes them away. Remember that you do not

always have to be in control in order to be happy. Sometimes the

happiness comes in giving others their own responsibilities and

allowing them to fulfill them for you.

Capricorns: Hasan Salihamidzic (Jan 1),

Claudio Marchisio(Jan 20)

Sagittarius - November 23 - December 22

It's time that you stopped looking at people who want to be a part of your life

as impediments to your independence. Independent does not have to mean

alone. You can have both worlds. Talk to people with the same straightfor-

wardness that you expect from them and you may be surprised at how understanding

they can be. If they aren't as responsive as you would like them to be, use the power of

your words to soften them and then try to find a middle ground that you can all be happy

with. The sharing of experiences won't mean less for you, it will mean more for everyone.

Libra - September 24 - October 23

You work well within a group and you know

it. Remember, though, that you can’t al-

ways wait around for others to do the work

for you; you must contribute your own part.

Follow your instinct when it comes to relationships be-

cause, even though you feel that you can’t trust your-

self, you actually do know what’s better for you. You

cannot hide within the group forever; it’s time to start

making your mark. Libras: Mauro Camoranesi (Oct 4),

David Trezeguet (Oct 15), Nicola Legrottaglie (Oct 20)

Scorpios: Vincenzo Iaquinta (Nov 1)

Alessandro Del Piero (Nov 9)

Sagittarius:

Fabio Grosso (Nov 28)

JUVE FACT: Juventus was the first soccer club to wear the Golden Stars for Sport Excellence, the two stars above the team crest. The two stars represent every 10 league championships won by the team, the first coming in 1958 and the second in 1982

Virgo - August 22 - September 23

You doubt other people and are skeptical of their intentions. However, what’s worse is that you

doubt yourself. Stop analyzing things beyond recognition. Sometimes issues are just straightfor-

ward and simple; stop complicating them. People often look to you for advise because of your

logic: use that gift to help people instead of scrutinizing them.

Leo - July 23 -August 21

People are attracted to you because of your vivacity and zest for life. However, your overconfidence

sometimes gets in the way of your relationships. Learn to temper your attitude with some humility in

order to soften your initial impression. You are always at your best when you have a project at hand so

make sure to keep yourself busy.

Cancer - June 22 - July 22

Your oversensitivity to other people's reactions results in any criticism of you appearing harsh. It's time

that you stop looking to others to validate you. You know your own worth and you have the determi-

nation to make things happen. Calm your mind and look inside yourself to find what's really impor-

tant to you instead of following what others say is best. Even when you know that you're right, look at

situation from the other's point of you and then you might better understand what they are going

through, without overreacting.

Gemini - May 22 - June 21

Now is the best time to relax and take a breather. You like to think that you are independent but you

know inside that what you crave is the comfort of other people. Open up and let people in. During this

period, try to keep your emotions in check because you may find that the smallest things set you off.

Remember, it doesn’t always have to be a confrontation, sometimes it can be a learning curve.

Taurus - April 21 - May 21

You like to follow the leader but don’t use that as an excuse to shirk your responsibilities. Your reac-

tions tend to be to extremes: either you blow up over it or you are frightened into passivity. It’s time

that you learned to mitigate those feelings into something more productive. You have the perse-

verance in you to grasp a task and stick to it and it’s time that you started utilizing that skill .

Pisces - February 20- March 20

What you crave is to escape but it’s important that you focus your energy on the here and now.

Living too much in he ―what ifs‖ will lead you down a path of sure disappointment. Look to those

around you to guide you because they are often more capable of seeing straight than you are.

When they look to you, lend a helping hand, but refrain from making their problems your own. Eve-

ryone has a capacity and you should make sure you don’t take on too much for yourself.

Aquarius - January 21 - February 19

You are sometimes frightened by your own spontaneity but that’s the quality that makes you so liked

by others. Don’t use this as a crutch, take advantage of all that your independence has to offer. Your

lifestyle enables you to harvest wisdom from those who you encounter and that will help you in all your

future endeavours. Your ability to think outside the box will enable you to stand out from the crowd.

Aries - March 21 - April 20

You find yourself being moody and lashing out. Realize that this is because of your underlying insecu-

rity and not because the world is against you. Take time for yourself instead of constantly giving to oth-

ers. If you push yourself too much then you will start pulling back from everyone and then you will start

feeling guilty. Your vitality is your strongpoint so use that to foster relationships and realize that you

have a lot to offer.

Ten interesting things about the FIFA World Player of the Year Award 1. The winner of 2006 award, Fabio Cannavaro, is the first defender, or player other than a midfielder or striker, to have ever won the award since its inception by Lothar Matthaus in 1991. The closest any other defender or goalkeeper has came to the award before were Oliver Kahn (Goalkeeper, second in 2002), Roberto Carlos (Defender, second in 1997) and Paolo Maldini (Defender, second in 1995). 2. In the past sixteen editions of the awards, it had been won by strikers and midfielders seven times each, making outfield players (with the exception of defenders), a more popular choice for the award. It is surmised that strikers and midfielders hoard most of the glory in competitions, therefore their chances are higher than defenders and goalkeepers. 3. There are two triple winners of the awards since its inception: French midfielder Zinedine Zidane (1998, 2000 and 2003) and Brazilian striker Ronaldo (1996, 1997 and 2002). 4. No player has ever won the award for three consecutive years, though two have come close: Ronaldo (1996 and 1997) and Ronaldinho (2004 and 2005). 5. Although the award is meant for the world’s best player, only players from Europe, Africa and South American have made it to the final short list. Hence there has been quite some criticism from those in the corners of the world about the selection process.

6. Other than Juan Roman Riquleme’s nomination in 2007 when he was playing on loan for Boca Juniors, all the players on the short list came from clubs in Europe. 7. No English Player or Player from United King-dom have ever won the award before. The closest have been Gary Lineker (1991, third), Alan Shearer (1996, third), David Beckham (1999 and 2001, both second) and Frank Lampard (2005, second). 8. Brazil has the most wins by nationality. Brazilian players have won the award a staggering seven times; four times more than the closet nationality of French with three wins. 9. The last six winners of the award have come from teams in the Spanish La Liga. 10. FC Barcelona has had six winners from players within its ranks while rivals Real Madrid have had four. Thus, the majority of winners (63%) have been from those teams in the past sixteen awards. Their closet rival for this

honor is Juventus with four winners.
