DALLAS — The gunman who fatally shot five police officers in Dallas last week had some expertise in building bombs, in addition to a large cache of bomb-making material, the city’s police chief said on Monday, but investigators still do not know how he learned to make explosives or what he planned to do with them.
After searching through the home of the gunman, Micah Johnson, the Police Department’s bomb technicians concluded
that “he knew what he was doing — this was not some novice,” Chief David O. Brown said. Detectives are trying to de-
termine “what’s on his laptop, how he learned that,” he said, because Mr. Johnson’s military experience — he was a
carpentry and masonry specialist for the Army Reserve — would not have included explosives training.

Tom Venditouli Faith In Action
Award
2016 Recipients
Each year OLMC gives this award in conjunction with our feast, to a person 30 years of age or younger who displays the qualities of putting their faith into action that were so much a part of Tom
Venditouli’s life. This year’s recipients are Zach Augus-tine and his lovely wife, Elise DuFour Augustine.
Zach is relatively new to Bristol, having moved here from Pennsyl-vania to study law at Roger Wil-liams University. Elise is a long-time parishioner who graduated from our school and was con-firmed here. He is a Eucharistic Minister and she sings in our Choir and plays the flute as well. They met here at Mount Carmel, fell in love here, got engaged here in the Church during Holy Week a few years back and were married here.
Together they are confirmation teachers in our parish and her brother was the Vendituoli win-ner three years ago!
Congratulations Zach & Elise!

2. Rhode Island Value of land per acre: $133,730 Total value: $90 billion (3rd lowest) Total acres: 0.7 million (the lowest) Percent land mass rural: 61.3% (2nd lowest)
Like most of the states with more valuable land per acre, Rhode Island is not a large state. In fact, it is the smallest in the union. At just 673,000 acres, Rhode Island’s total land value is just $90 billion, nearly the lowest in the country. The per acre value, however, is $133,700, second only to New Jersey. The state is also second to New Jersey in the share of its total land mass that is urban, a factor that tends to be higher in places with more val-uable land. About 39% of Rhode Island’s total land is urban, significantly higher than the 3% of the nation’s land that is considered urban.

Residents oppose obstacle race planned for Colt State Park
An obstacle course race scheduled for Colt State Park later this month is facing opposition from a group of residents who say last year’s race damaged the ecosys-tem of the park, hurting trees, polluting a pond in the park and even killing marine micro-organisms. The race organizer re-futes the claims and said no real damage was done. The race is expected to go one
as planned on July 30. Deirdre Robinson, a Bristol resident and frequent visitor to the park, has petitioned the state Department of Environmental Management to prohibit the Trident Race from running. She has written multiple letters to DEM Director Janet Coit, as well as letters to the editor in publications including the Bristol Phoenix. Ms. Robinson complains of orange paint that was sprayed along the nature trails in the park to direct runners, obstacles that were bolted to trees in the park and limbs that were cut from trees. She also has said one of the race elements — a bucket brigade that in-volves participants filling a bucket of water from the town beach and carrying them into the park — kills marine organisms when the water is dumped on dry land.
