Keeping it safe…

Dan fell backwards down his front steps. He and his

wheelchair landed on the ground. As a paraplegic, he couldn’t

get himself up. He had to lie on the cold ground. As dusk settled

he was afraid no one would see him. It was 20 minutes before a

neighbor found him. The next day a friend chained an old

Chevy grille across the steps as a temporary fix, but Dan knew

he needed real help. He called the RSVP Handyman Project.

After hanging up the phone, the Handyman Project Manager

wiped tears from her eyes then called two

Handyman volunteers to find a solution.

They built a proper safety rail and extended

the size of his porch to make it easier for

him to turn his wheelchair around. Now Dan

knows he can continue living safely and

independently in his own home. (Names changed to protect privacy.)

I’ve been wondering???

What are my RSVP benefits? Strengthen our community,

help others who are less fortunate and make new friends.

Receive free liability insurance, a newsletter full of valuable

information, mileage reimbursement, and invitations to fun

social events. AND if you have time to volunteer more, receive

personal assistance with discovering a volunteer position that is

the right fit with your skills, talents, interest and experience.

You ALSO receive notices about one-time projects and events

that offer you flexibility and variety.

Why am I required to report my volunteer hours to

RSVP? Volunteer hours verify that you are actively

volunteering therefore eligible to receive RSVP benefits.

Volunteer hours provide insight into the tremendous impact,

accomplishments and value that more than 500 volunteers have

in meeting community needs. Number of hours, along with

other data, is mandated by our funders and this enables RSVP

to stay viable to provide services to you and our community.

How do I report my volunteer hours? It’s simple! Visit the

RSVP website www.rsvpgrandjunction.org . Enter your user

name and password available from RSVP. Another option is to

use printed timesheets we provide you (you can also find them

on the website) and return them in postal mail or scan and email

them back to [email protected].

Thank you so much for strengthening our community and

reporting your hours!

"I was so scared and confused," Sandra said

after tragedy struck her family. "The Advocate

was so kind and caring, a gift, actually." Sandra

had experienced the kind of trauma that we all

hope we never know; the sudden death of her

son.

As Volunteer Advocates with the Mesa County

Sheriff's Office, there is an opportunity to make a

valuable and lasting impact on the life of

someone who has just been through the worst

moments in his or her life. They may be the

victim of a terrifying crime or have experienced

the loss of someone who has unexpectedly

died. Advocates respond on the scene along with

Sheriff's Deputies, to offer a steady hand, a

compassionate heart, and resources that, moving

forward, will help put the pieces back together.

To be an advocate with the Sheriff's Office, a

volunteer needs a sense of compassion and a

desire to help someone in need. In August, at an

extensive training, they also offer an opportunity

to shadow other experienced volunteers. A

criminal background check, reliable

transportation, a valid driver's license and current

auto insurance are required. If you are interested

in this position, please contact the RSVP

volunteer manager at 970-243-9839.

Compassion Needed for Victims

Rusty was living on noodles. “I pay so much

for my insurance that I can only afford to eat

Ramen. . . nothing else!” He wanted to drop his

health insurance so he could save over $250

dollars a month. He was afraid of what might

happen without that coverage. Luckily, Rusty

found RSVP’s SHIP (Senior Health Insurance

Assistance Project). With the help of trained

volunteers, Rusty was able to get a drug and a

health plan designed for Medicaid recipients

who are on Medicare. Rusty left the SHIP office

to buy a steak to add to his noodles!
