America ReadsOne hour, once a week, can improve the life of a young child!

The Monadnock RSVP Volunteer Center invites men and women, ages 55+ to consider becoming an America Reads volunteer to help children struggling with reading. Research shows that supportive and consistent interactions with adults in the early years can affect a child’s brain development and set the stage for academic success. America Reads volunteers will engage children in grades Pre-K through 3rd grade in literacy activities and one-on-one reading time.

We currently need people to fill volunteer positions at two new America Reads sites in Troy and Stoddard. We will continue to expand our volunteer placements in the 15 schools and four Head Start/Early Learning programs where we are currently serving. The commitment is for one hour, once a week, throughout the school year.

If you are interested in joining the America Reads Volunteer Program, you will be asked to attend one of the two training classes for new volunteers. Prior to the training classes, volunteers will complete an interview and application process.

Fall trainings will take place in: Peterborough: Wednesday, September 21, noon–4:30 p.m.

Keene: Tuesday, September 27, 9 a.m.–2 p.m.

A quick call or email is all it takes to get the process started. To find out more about America Reads, contact the Monadnock RSVP Volunteer Center at (603) 357-6893, or send an email to [email protected]. Monadnock RSVP is a program of Monadnock Family Services, a Monadnock United Way Agency.

Fitzwilliam Garden Club Recruiting New MembersDo you enjoy gardening? Would you like to start a garden but don’t know where to start? Or do you want to make changes to your existing gardens but don’t know what to do? You do not need to live in Fitzwilliam to join!

The Club consists of members of local communities who share gardening knowledge through monthly programs from April to October, provide plants from our own gardens for two annual plant sales, and maintain existing gardens throughout the Town of Fitzwilliam.

There is always something new to learn about gardening, new people to meet, and plants to share and buy to support our programs.

If you are interested, please contact Marilyn at 899-3083 or Terri at 585-6510. We look forward to talking with you to answer any questions you might have.

Honor Our Veterans ~ Serve those who served!

Monadnock RSVP Volunteer Center will carry out a National Day of Service and Remembrance on Thursday, September 8 to provide support to veterans and immediate military family members (including widows/widowers) throughout the Monadnock Region.

We are seeking veterans and adults age 55 and over to serve in teams to help less-able veterans and their families with home repairs, weatherization, safety, and seasonal projects. Volunteers with special skills, as well as willing laborers, are welcome.

RSVP is also soliciting project requests from veterans or military families. Volunteer labor is free of charge, but required materials are the responsibility of the home owner.

The National Day of Service and Remembrance is now the nation’s largest day of charitable engagement. It was developed to provide a permanent and constructive way for individuals to annually remember and pay tribute to those lost and injured on 9/11, and to help recall and rekindle the spirit of unity, compassion, and service that existed in America following the 9/11 attacks. You can be part of this local and national effort to help your neighbors in need.

For more information to volunteer, or to request help with a project if you served in the military or you are an immediate military family member, please call Monadnock RSVP at 357-6893 or 924-7350 for the Greater Peterborough area. Project requests must be received by August 19 for consideration.

Monadnock RSVP is a program of Monadnock Family Services, a Monadnock United Way agency.

RAMS NewsThe RAMS have a lot going on lately! We are helping fundraise for the new Recreation Department van and have planned a few events that will help raise money to support this much needed vehicle for the Recreation Department. This year we have another cordwood raffle, a wood pellet raffle, and we will once again be having our strawberry shortcake booth at the July 4 Family Festival on the common. Also look for us at the Festival of Fireworks in Jaffrey in August with our famous strawberry shortcake!

We are also planning a yard sale in August with the proceeds going to the Recreation Department van as well. We will be looking for people to donate things to sell to help us raise more funds. We also have a project planned for the softball field at Wellington Park, to be unveiled to the public after we get the proper town approvals. Look for new things to be happening around town, courtesy of the RAMS.

As usual, we are always looking to boost our membership. If you are interested in giving back to the town of Rindge, mostly through volunteering, we would love to talk to you. Feel free to come and talk to us at any of our events, or we can be reached at P.O. Box 880, Rindge. See you all around town!

Selling Your Home?by Candice Starrett Real Estate, LLC, www.CandiceStarrett.com

What is the most effective form of advertising for selling your home?

It should come as no surprise that there has been research regarding how consumers are now looking for homes and properties for sale. The internet is used by nearly 100 percent of people now looking to purchase real estate. In fact, out of 100 people, here is the breakdown of sources of information that those 100 people are using:

• Searched for property on the internet: 100% • Contacted a local realtor: 89%

• Noticed a property by a real estate yard sign: 53% • Found an ad in the newspaper: 28%

• Looking in a Home book and/or magazine: 19%

Whether we like it or not, these trends are not going away. In fact they are escalating with fewer and fewer numbers of consumers who are looking to print media for their information.

Real estate professionals know that their customers are connected and informed. Nine in 10 home buyers today rely on the internet as their primary research source, and 52 percent turn to the Web as their first step.

Recognizing the shift away from print marketing, real estate agencies and individual realtors recognize that they have to spend more of their time advertising online.

If you are a property owner looking to list your property, you can have your home seen by hundreds or thousands of people every single day because you’re only one click away from selling that property online.

Hunt Foundation Grant Awarded to IngallsMemorial Libraryby Diane Gardenour, Library Director

We greatly appreciate and thank the Roy A. Hunt Foundation for the generous $2,500 grant for general operating expenses, which helped the Library to purchase a mixture of different items. Some of the items purchased were a new LCD Projector, flat projector cart, larger projection screen, additional Kick Step stools, Children's Room boombox, patron door counter, entryway carpets, open flag and pole, and laptop computer, surge protector, and computer installation. Some of these items were to replace older broken equipment that really needed replacement.

Many thanks!

Give Your Children the Gift of (Financial) Knowledgeby Edward Jones, for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor

It’s almost Father’s Day. If you’re a dad with young children, you can expect some nice homemade cards. Ultimately, though, your greatest gift will be seeing your children grow up to be independent adults. And you can help them – by teaching them good financial skills.

For starters, encourage your children to become savers. Set a good example by showing them how you save money over time for major purchases. And you might provide them with a financial incentive by matching part of their contributions to their piggy banks or savings accounts.

Also, get your children interested in investing. You might simulate the investment process by letting them choose a stock and then follow its fortunes. To make the results more tangible, use “play” money to represent an initial investment, and add or subtract to the pile to track the ups and downs of the real stock.

By following these suggestions, you can help your children acquire good financial habits – and seeing them put these skills to good use can provide you with many happy Father’s Days in the future.
