What is Batik?
DESIGN BRIEF Brief: You have been given a brief to design a bag for a small chain of accessory retailers for their Spring/Summer
2014 collection. The retailer has requested designs for a beach bag and a small handbag and they would like
the bag to have an eastern theme, such as batik or tie dye.
Task:
Design and make either a beach bag or handbag to fit in with the retailer’s current range and current fashion
trends.
In this project you will learn: -
- How to work to your design brief
- How to use a variety of dyeing techniques.
- About pattern symbols and terminology
- How to construct your bag
- How to line your bag.
Task analysis
What is the task asking you to do? Write a summary from the class discussion
summarising what you need to do.
For example:-
I need to consider current trends because.......
I need to research other bags of a similar type because .................
I need to research Batik because………..
I need to research Eastern themes because……..

Where does it come from?........................................................……………… ........................................................................................................................ What equipment do you need to create a piece of batik?............................ ....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Draw out 2 different types of batik you have found on the internet. 1. 2. Why have you picked them? ........................................................................ .........................................................................................................................
Here you will need to create a mood board for your bag. You will need to include images of different bag shapes and images which will help

Do you ever shop in a specialist
accessory shop?
Do you use a beach bag when you
go on holiday?
Would you consider buying a
casual handbag for work,
weekends or for school?
How much on average do you pay
when you buy a new bag?
What colours would you consider
buying a bag in? Please give 2
colours.
Interview some friends or family to gather their views on beach and hand bags
using the table below (add 2 questions of your own in the bottom 2 sections.
Questionnaire.
Look at the results of your questionnaire. Write a summary of your findings.
What is it telling you?
Consider what people have said about their bag and colour preferences. How much
are they prepared to pay? Where do they shop

After you have completed your research and summarised what you have found in
your research analysis, you can draw up a list of all the things your product has to
have. This is called a Design Specification.
List the essential and desirable criteria for your bag in the spaces below.

Design Specification.
Task: From the mood board images you have collected on eastern images, draw out 2 possible patterns which could go onto the surface of your bag (this will be done using the Batik method). Surface pattern idea 1.
Surface pattern idea 2.
Surface pattern Ideas
In order to produce the best product designers always come up with lots of ideas in order to see which one would be most successful. Task: Below draw your ideas for your bag – you will be shown different possible shapes for your bag but you may want to change them slightly. To gain a higher level you will need to choose a more complex shape. You will also need to include your best surface pattern idea from the previous page, remember if you want to adapt it you can, this is all part of the design process. Evaluate each design idea with WWW / EBI Remember to label the different parts of the bag eg types of fastenings to be used / decorative features (use of buttons/sequins) and use colour in all your drawings.

Batik samples.
Task: In the box below draw, add colour shading and label the final design for your bag–
you may need to draw different views e.g front and side to show the detail of your design
Try and draw your design to scale.
Scale = 1:2 (every 1cm on the page = 2cm in real life)
NOW: you will need to draw this out on thin tracing paper to use as a pattern for your bag, place it on your
cotton fabric ready to put your batik on it.

Here’s a photograph of my bag.
Flow Chart
Task;
Write out each step you took in order to make your ugly doll
Use another sheet of paper if you need to add more steps.
Remember to include key words. (see homework sheet for key words)
Start
Stop
In the ugly doll project you will be mainly assessed on your designing and evaluation throughout the project. It is important that you know and understand what you must do to
achieve your target level so please read the level sheet attached to this booklet.
Task Test how well you have made your bag and record your results in the table below.
Test Result
1. How well was the felt
cut out using the pattern pieces?
2. How complicated
was the shape to cut?
3. How neat are the
stitches?
4. Is there more than
one layer of waxing in the batik?
5. What fastening have
you used?
6. How well are any
sequins etc. attached ?
7. Does the final design
look like the made product?
Now you need to evaluate the project…...
In this project you are going to be concentrating mainly on evaluating the designing of your batik purse.
Task: Assess the work you have produced, answer the questions below.
1. From your evaluation of your work which part of the project did you produce
the best piece of work? Explain your reasons for this.
2. If you were to design another batik purse, what would you do differently?
3. If you were to make another batik purse, how would you make it differently?
4. Which PLT’s skills did you use in this project?
Task: Look at the level descriptors and tick the areas you have met in this project.
What level would you give for your design work ?
