dive into Creative Waters with a class this summer at Kendall! Adult classes begin the week of May 13 and meet evenings, Fridays, and Saturdays throughout the summer. Classes are offered for every skill level in Drawing, Painting, Photography, Computers, Metals, Fashion, Interiors, Writing, Ceramics, Glass Blowing, and more. New this summer are: Boundary Waters: Outdoor Drawing in Grand Rapids, Drawing from Science: the Ocean Floor, Making Waves, Watercolor for Complete Beginners, Photography for Internet Sales, Head Study in Clay, Copper Wave Bracelet, Glass Blowing Workshop, and Silk Scarf On the Town.

Our second annual oak Park architecture tour for the Frank Lloyd Wright House Walk, will depart May 18, and Paint the dunes tour, painting class in Grand Haven, will take place on June 15.

Professional development courses for educators, artists, designers and other professionals include: Oil Pastel Drawing from Life, Teaching Design in the High School Art Room, Screen-Printing on Clay, Art of the Short Story: Point of View, and Freehand Perspective Drawing. State Board Continuing Education Clock Hours are available for several of these courses.

Youth classes for ages 6-17 begin June 10, and meet twice weekly for three weeks. Some new classes are: Puddle Jumpers, Painting Nemo and Friends, Making Boats that Really Float, Eco-Water Bottle Art, Lego™ Pirates of the Caribbean, Start a Ripple Effect with Watercolor, Wash n’ Wear, Ghosts of the Ocean, Designing Beach and Resort Wear, Color Drenched Canvases, and Sci-Fi with a Video Green Screen.

Portfolio Camp for ages 16-19 is offered July 8-19. See pages 38-39 for more information.

Youth day camps meet 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. daily throughout July and August. New camps this summer are: Architecture Day Camp, Ages 13-17, Create Your Own Brand, Ages 13-17, Pond Pets & Swamp Stuff, Ages 8-12, Botanical Beauties, Ages 13-17, Design Thinking and Drawing, Ages 13-17, and Pokemon® Block Party Day Camp, Ages 7-10.

Here’s your chance to learn outdoor waterside drawing on location during the spring and summer in Grand Rapids. Reeds Lake, Riverside Park, Fish Ladder, and Millennium Park will be some of the sites you will explore while developing your skills and ability to draw water and landscape.

Focusing on Hokusai’s “The Great Wave,” Monet’s “Impression Sunrise,” and Hockney’s swimming pool paintings, try your hand at painting waves with oil, acrylic and watercolor. You will learn a lot about which medium you prefer and about techniques to depict water with each medium. Using photographs for reference, you will explore topics such as: when water hits the surf, sunlight or sunset over water, cool calm waters, underwater scenes.

Using pen and ink, learn the basics of drawing from shape layout to shadowing and showing movement with line. You will be introduced to illustrators who draw in pen and ink while working on subjects of landscape and cityscape in line.

You can learn to draw! By gaining access to the part of your mind that works in a style conducive to creative, intuitive thought, you will learn a fundamental skill of visual art, how to put down on paper what you see in front of your eyes. In learning how to draw, you will learn an entirely new way to see, which can impact your creativity in other areas of your life. This class is based on the teaching in the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards.

Learn to use still life as the starting point for abstraction. Through deletion, isolation, and exaggeration of objects, your painting will become a new entity in itself. Abstraction frees your mind to focus on composition, mark making, and material use without the goal of representational imagery. You will use either oil or acrylic paint.

Learn to use watercolor expressively. You will study color intensity and combination as well as basic watercolor techniques, including paper preparation, washes, dry brush, and masking. Revisit an old technique of mixing oil paint with wax to achieve rich textural surfaces. New processes and products make this a viable alternative to traditional oil painting for artists today. Create three or more completed encaustic paintings. Class is appropriate for beginners or more advanced students who want to develop conceptually.

Your digital camera must have aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual shooting modes.

Learn the basics of digital photography while gaining hands-on experience with your personal camera. Meet at a new location each week to practice using the camera in different environments. Camera functions such as aperture, shutter speed, white balance and ISO will be covered. Students must bring a digital camera with changeable lens to each class.

Learn how to take ordinary photos that have been damaged and repair them using Photoshop software, even removing scratches and dust. First gain a basic working knowledge of Photoshop, including layer features, gradients, and masks. Then scan your image into Photoshop isolating the part of the image needing to be fixed. You will have the ability to color correct, add different effects and display images as you choose.

Alla prima comes from Italian, literally meaning “at once”. Instead of building colors up with layers or glazing over an underpainting, alla prima paintings are completed while the paint is still wet. Learn to start and finish a painting (oil or acrylic) in one session, also developing the expressive quality of your work. View examples from the history of art while learning techniques to achieve similar results.

If you’ve always wanted to try your hand at painting but were too intimidated to pick up a brush, here’s your chance in a non-threatening environment. All materials are provided so that you don’t have to search for them or make a large investment before you begin. You will complete one watercolor painting in each class. Subjects for each day’s painting include: geometric shapes, glass of water, cupcake, robin, lily, shells, and more.

Travel to Oak Park, Illinois, home of Frank Lloyd Wright, on a bus or van with other Wright enthusiasts for the annual Wright Plus home tour. You will have the opportunity to tour 8 private homes not typically open to the public, as well as the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio and Unity Temple, all designed by Wright. In addition you will receive an admission pass to Chicago’s Robie House, which can be used any time in 2013. You will have the opportunity to ride shuttle buses or walk around Oak Park. Docents will be available in all buildings to provide historic interpretation. Comfortable walking shoes and a portable stool are recommended. Bring along your favorite Wright-themed books, for some lively book discussions while travelling back to Grand Rapids.

arChiteCtural sCulPture —Build a foam core sculpture based on the theme of architecture. The sculpture can be realistic or abstract as long as it has some function of shelter. Instructor: Michael Pfleghaar

entrance requirementsStudents ages 16-19 are eligible. Students must submit a letter of recommendation from their art teacher with their application, along with digital images of five works of art, including two observational drawings. You will be notified of by mail of acceptance within one week of receipt of your completed application.

CurriculumThe curriculum will include instruction in observational drawing, figure drawing with clothed models, and instruction on assembling a portfolio for presentation. Each day will begin with a warm-up/mixer activity. Focused time will be spent with observational drawing.

In addition, break out sessions will be held daily which will include some of the following activities: artist talks, studio visits, pinhole camera project, faculty critiques, portfolio reviews, offsite drawing experiences, tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Meyer May House, Citri-Solv image transfer collage project, LaFontsee Gallery visit, egg drop design project, sculpture casting demo, and found object redemption project.

At the conclusion of camp each student will have completed a minimum of five finished works suitable for portfolio submission, and will have instructions for assembling the portfolio at home.

lunchtime There is a lunch break between classes. A brown bag lunch from home is suggested, and a variety of snacks and beverages are available in the vending machines. Several coffee shops and sandwich shops are located within walking distance. A listing of restaurants, coffee shops, and markets will be provided when you register. The café in Kendall’s Historic Federal Building serves lunch daily as well.

CostsThe tuition cost for Portfolio Camp is $750. In addition students must bring their own art supplies. This cost is for day camp, Friday evening dinner and activity, and four evenings supervised studio time. For room and board fees, call 616.451.2787, ext. 1139. Continuing Studies tuition discounts do not apply to Portfolio Camp.

Elizabeth has been included in various competitions and exhibitions including Art in Science Exhibition where she was awarded 3rd place from the Arts and Industry Council of Battle Creek.

judy huyck, has a certificate in Fashion Design from School of Fashion Design in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated from Aquinas College with a B.F.A. in Sculpture and Photography.

aneka ingold, B.F.A., emphasis in Painting from Grand Valley State University, is pursuing her M.F.A. at Kendall and exhibits her work locally.

Supplies for classes are not included in the cost of the course, unless indicated by a supply fee. Youth class participants who pay a supply fee for a drawing class will receive the supplies in packet form, which they will take home with them at the end of the class. Photography and computer classes include a lab fee, but additional supplies may be required as well. Class outlines and supply lists (if applicable) are attached to your automatic registration confirmation when registering online, or mailed to you when registering by any other means.

guestsGuests of either the student or the instructor are not allowed in class, unless the guest has paid the daily tuition fee. Please contact the Continuing Studies office about the daily tuition rate if you are bringing a guest to class.

loCatioNAll youth students must be dropped off at 17 Pearl Street, Historic Federal Building. Adult students will be notified by email in advance of their room and building location. Signage will also be prominently placed in the lobby of both buildings. Youth students will meet their instructor in the lobby of the Historic Federal Building, 17 Pearl Street. If necessary, older youth will be escorted across the street by their instructor at the beginning of class and escorted back at the end of class.

NeW! droP off aNd PiCK uP of youth All youth must be dropped off at the 17 Pearl Street entrance and accompanied into the building by an adult. All youth will be accompanied by an instructor to their classes. When arriving late, parents may accompany their students to class. Parents are required to identify themselves to the instructor on the first day of class and to sign out all youth ages 12 and younger, when they return to pick them up. Prior arrangements need to be made with our staff if an adult other than the parent or guardian is picking up a child. An adult staff member will supervise the lobby area for fifteen minutes prior to the beginning and after the end of all classes. We encourage parents to arrive early to pick their child up directly from the classroom. At the end of class instructors of youth ages 12 and younger will escort remaining students to the lobby where our staff will supervise students until parents arrive. you must sign out your child, ages 12 and under, with the instructor or staff member.

NeW! fee for early arrival or late PiCK uP A fee of $15 per half hour will be charged for any child under the age of eighteen who is present without their parent or guardian in the building more than 15 minutes prior to or after the end of class.

sNaCKs/food iN Classrooms Food will not be served as part of the curriculum in any Kendall Youth or Adult Continuing Studies classes. Youth classes take a break about halfway through each class session in break area. Many students like to bring money for the vending machines, or the Kendall Bookstore, which also sells snacks. Students under the age of 18 will be limited to purchasing no more than one energy drink per day while in attendance. Students may bring drinks into the classrooms, but food is highly discouraged, due to food allergies. A peanut/tree nut free table is designated in break areas.

luNCh Youth staying all day can eat their lunch in the break area at the Historic Federal Building. This area will be supervised between classes. A brown bag lunch from home is suggested. We provide a peanut/tree nut free table. Yo-Chef’s Café on the first floor, is offering a daily youth lunch special throughout the summer.

sPeCial Needs Please make sure staff and the instructor are notified about any special needs or concerns. We will try to accommodate them.

health form aNd Waiver for WeeK-loNg day CamPs Students participating in the Monday through Friday Day Camps are required to turn in a completed Health Form prior to the start of camp. The form can be mailed or brought in on the first day.

youth summer oPeN house aNd Portfolio CamP ClosiNg exhiBitioNThis exhibition will be held on Thursday evening, July 25, 2013 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Kendall atrium, lower atrium and Gallery. Students will be asked to submit one piece of art work from each class they attended to display during the exhibition. Work can be removed from the walls and taken home after 7:30 p.m. on the night of the open house.

ParKiNg On-street parking is free after 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and all day Saturday and Sunday. Parking is available in the city ramp one block west of Kendall and several other ramps in the downtown area.

PhotograPhsWith enrollment, a student consents to being photographed or having his/her work photographed in classes or student activities on or off campus. These photographs may be used by the College in future promotional efforts, without specific written permission from the student.

uNClaimed artWorK All art work produced in the summer sessions 2013 must be claimed on or before August 30, 2013. The College is not responsible for any work left after that date.
