The Copley-Fairlawn Schools Foundation actively assists our school district in providing one of the best educational opportunities in the region. The Foundation is a 501(c)

(3) non-profi t organization operated separately from the school district by an independent volunteer Board of Trustees comprised of alumni and community leaders who are passionate about our children’s education.

The Foundation’s mission is to enhance the educational experience and opportunity of our community’s youth by funding college scholarships and educational classroom

projects. Since 1992, the Foundation has awarded 101 college scholarships to graduating seniors, totaling over $120,000, and has awarded 95 educational project grants to teachers, totaling over $35,000.

Funding provided by the Foundation would not be possible without the generous fi nancial support of individuals, families, groups and businesses. If you value

the excellent education and opportunity our schools provide to our children, please consider including the Foundation as part of your charitable giving and estate plan. Contributions are tax deductible and are deposited into the Foundation’s professionally managed investment fund. An annual gift of $500 or more entitles a contributor to name a scholarship. And for a one time gift of $10,000 or more, the Foundation creates an endowed scholarship, which generates income to fund annual scholarships well into the future.

For more information about the Foundation or how you may include the Foundation as part of your charitable giving or estate plan, please contact the Foundation President,

Denice Lentine, at (330) 664-4800.

The Copley-Fairlawn Schools Foundation and Board of Trustees extend their grateful appreciation to those individuals who made contributions within the last quarter to the memorial fund listed.

On Saturday, February 2, eight Copley-Fairlawn Middle School students participated in the annual Mathcounts competition at The University of Akron. Mathcounts is a national program sponsored locally by the Akron District Society of Professional Engineers and The University of Akron. The competition is comprised of a series of tests, an individual sprint round, an individual target round and a team round. This year, sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from 16 middle schools in Summit, Medina and Portage counties competed. Representing Copley-Fairlawn Middle School were 8th graders Michael Dugan, Jeffrey Wang, Victoria Yang, and Seth Simon along with 7th graders Keval Yerigeri, Crystal Lin, Alan Du, and Peter Weigand.

The Copley-Fairlawn Middle School team fi nished in fi rst place, which earned them a trip to Columbus for the state competition on April 5. The core team was composed of 8th graders Michael Dugan and Jeffrey Wang and

7th graders Crystal Lin and Keval Yerigeri.

On Saturday, April 5th, the four Copley-Fairlawn core team Mathcounts members continued on with state competition in Columbus. The team, coached by retired Copley math teacher Mrs. Peggy Messaros, fi nished 7th out of 33 teams from across the state. Competing were 7th graders Keval Yerigeri and Crystal Lin along with 8th graders Michael Dugan and Jeffrey Wang. Because Keval fi nished individually in the top 16 out of 194 competitors, he was included in the special oral round of elimination in front of an audience of several hundred. His superb talent for quick thinking earned him the 1st place trophy for the “Countdown Round” after the other 15 competitors were eliminated. This was the fi rst time in 25 years that an Akron District student won this special individual oral competition in Columbus.

Title VI-B and Preschool Grants

As required by law, Copley-Fairlawn City School District is providing notice of plans for Title VI-B and preschool grants for the 2008-2009 school year. Anyone having comments concerning the expenditures can direct them to Dr. Roger Saurer, Superintendent of Schools, at (330) 664-4801 or Mrs. Tracy Foley, Interim Director of Pupil Services, at (330) 664-4855. The grants for 2008-2009 will be used for teacher salaries for multi-handicapped classrooms and other related service personnel. St. Hilary School and Spring Garden Waldorf School will use their portions of the grant to provide speech-language services.

On Tuesday, April 22, the Board of Education approved the initiative to begin construction of an artifi cial surface to be installed at Copley High School Stadium. The project is a response to the growing need in our community for an all weather stadium surface for our many athletic teams and musical performers in order to signifi cantly improve the usability for all participants.

A committee of volunteers was formed that is comprised of members of the Copley Athletic Boosters as well as other interested parties from the

community. The overarching organization is the non-profi t Copley-Fairlawn Schools Foundation. School district offi cials have also been a part of the effort to help raise private dollars in support of the project to meet the fundraising goal. The initial goal for the turf was met, and the project was formally approved to begin! Please feel free to continue your desire to help as we move into Phase II of the project. See www.copleystadium.com for any details.

Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow

Thursday, May 22, Jaime Adoff, author of The Song Shoots Out of My Mouth, Jimi and Me, and Names will Never Hurt Me, will teach and inspire Copley-Fairlawn Middle School students about his love of writing and music. This major event kicks off with “A Conversation with Jaime Adoff” at the Fairlawn Bath Library on Wednesday evening, May 21, at 6:30 p.m. The very next morning, Jaime will greet the students of Copley-Fairlawn Middle School with a brief announcement and present two morning assemblies—one for our 7th and 8th graders, then another for our 5th and 6th graders. During the rest of the school day, he will engage our student writers in workshops. A special lunch menu of chili

dogs and fries will be served in honor of Jaime’s character Aunt Berny who makes her world famous chili in the story Jimi and Me. At the end of the school day, from 3:15 to 4:00, students and our community are invited to a “Meet the Author” reception where his books can be purchased and signed by the author himself. (His busy schedule will take him to the College of Wooster the next day to speak to the state Power of the Pen writers; our CFMS writers will be in this audience!) Music is Jaime’s passion. He is an accomplished musician, with two music degrees. A fascinating free verse style tells the stories of his intricate and multi-level characters. A big fan of Jimi Hendrix, he listened to his music while writing Jimi and Me. He says,

“I can’t emphasize enough how Jimi’s music helped to shape this book. Not just the music itself, but its deeper social and cultural signifi cance.” His love of music also inspired his poetry in The Song Shoots Out of My Mouth which features incredible artwork by Martin French. How lucky we are to have the support of our wonderful PTA, hosting the after-school book signing from 3:15 to 4:00, the Copley Teachers Association, sponsoring the luncheon in our school library for our CFMS writers, The Jennings Foundation, Copley-Fairlawn Schools Foundation Teacher Grant Program, and the Fairlawn Area Chamber of Commerce. We could not have such an exciting event without their support.

Author Jaime Adoff will visit Copley-Fairlawn Middle School
