Be Reading ‘Models’Children are influenced by the important adults in their lives. When they see you reading newspapers, magazines and books, they are going to want to imitate that and read too.

Visit the LibrarySign up for a library card and take advantage of the vast selection of quality children’s books available. Join in the fun at free programs offered at the library or visit winnipeg.ca/library/ for more information on services available.

Play Board and Card GamesThese kinds of activities help with language and problem-solving development. They also offer a great opportunity for family fun, laughter and creating new memories.

Read TogetherRead and read again your child’s favourite books. Reading is something kids can enjoy anytime and anywhere! Read together at bedtime, bath-time, during breakfast, while waiting at an appointment or at the park. Keep a book in your diaper/travel bag so you always have one handy.

Have Fun PrintingPrint your child’s name and the names of family, friends and pets. It can be fun to label items around the house such as the fridge, the door, or the lamp. Putting a sign with your child’s name on the bedroom door is a great idea. This will help your child make that personal connection between the spoken word and the marks on the paper.

Here are some suggestions for age-appropriate books to read:

Infants• Board books

• Black & white picture books

• Cloth books

• Books with faces of children and family

Toddlers• Concept books including alphabet,

shapes, colours, and animals

• Short picture & story books

• Board books

• Lift the flap books

• Touchy feeling books

Preschoolers• Rhyming books

• Predictable books with repetitive phrases, words and patterns

• Longer picture and story books

• Fairy tales and nursery rhymes

In RETSD, we are pleased to offer FREE parent-child programs like Bookworms that promote the joy of reading. Whether attending our registered or drop-in programs this winter, families are sure to enjoy lively rhyme circles, group stories and lots of quality books. Let the reading begin!
