It is often difficult for our children to understand the messages of Remembrance Day as they are so far removed from the wars of the past but they certainly demonstrated respectful behaviour throughout the assembly. Ms. Luchka's Morning Kindergarten Classroom

The morning kindergarten students have been very busy this past month and are adjusting well to the routines and procedures of being in Kindergarten at Wayoata Elementary School. Each and every day is a new adventure full of learning and fun! Our class has been working hard to learn about letters and the sounds they make, as well as working with numbers and dot patterns in math. We have been writing up a storm together and have created three class books! We can't wait to share them with you at our conferences in December. We also have been busy creating beautiful art this fall. For Thanksgiving our class worked with Mrs. Gibson to create handprint turkeys based on the book "Setting the Turkeys Free." Our class also created pumpkin art with oil pastels, chalk pastels and paint. We are learning about colours in science and how to mix primary colours to make secondary colours. When we created our pumpkins we did not use orange for the pumpkin and green for the leaves, but rather we mixed red with yellow to make orange and blue with yellow to make green to get the exact colours we wanted. Our class has been having a wonderful time learning, working and playing together!

Mrs. Waschuk, Mrs. Copeland and Ms. Johnson’s Grade 1/2 Classes

It is hard to believe that we are into the third month of the new school year and the closing of our first term. Having said that the time has passed quickly because we have been very busy upstairs in our little corner of the Wayoata School world! We are now more settled in and are more comfortable with our full day of school routines and expectations! Our classes have met expectations on many occasions and have filled many buckets, which have resulted in some fun classroom rewards! The grade one/two students have been working on an in depth study of bats in IBL class with Mrs. Gibson. We have learned so many interesting facts and skills. In the next few weeks we will be having a bat scientist/expert visit from the University of Winnipeg, to teach us some new facts about bats and to answer anything we continue to wonder about. We have just finished our design process where we all designed, labeled and then built a bat following some very important criteria. We learned that sometimes plans do not work out as expected and that we need to use our problem solving skills to make changes in order to make things “work”. It was a busy atmosphere upstairs as 60 grade one and two students followed their plan to “shop” for their supplies and then begin creating and altering their model where needed. The students also learned a great deal about independence and organization as we, the teachers, only “stepped” in to help if hot glue was required. We all learned a lot and had a lot of fun doing so! As part of Social Studies we have been learning about peace, poppies, and Remembrance Day. In doing so, we hosted the Remembrance Day assembly on November 9th, 2015. We have read many books about peace, brainstormed for ideas and have written down some of our ideas as well. At our assembly, we shared a poem and song about peace. We have also worked very hard every day to be peaceful, and responsible Wayoata citizens.

We are looking forward to starting the second term of school. The second term will bring forth new learning, and a lot of fun too! See you all soon for Learning Conferences and the Wayoata School Christmas Concert!

Mr. Kowal’s Grade 4 Class

It is now early November and the students have become quite confident with the French they have been working on. The students started off by brainstorming popular phrases that were consistently said in the classroom. These phrases were then translated into French. Through practice, the students are asking to do things like sharpen their pencil or get a drink of water amongst others in French. I would like to encourage anyone who runs into one of the students from my class to ask that student to demonstrate how well they can say these phrases. In English Language Arts, we have been working on writing pieces of advice to younger children. Some of the students focused on giving advice to younger children about what to expect while going out for their first Halloween. Others wrote advice on what younger children can expect on their first day of school. The students have shared some very insightful advice. The class is almost done working through our sound unit in science. Coming our way is a unit on light with the help of Mrs. Gibson, an inquiry based learning specialist. This unit will have some exciting hands on learning activities and projects.

Our Grade 5 Students Share Their Thoughts with Deer Lodge Veterans

This month, for Remembrance Day, we wanted to explore the lives of soldiers. We did some reading about animals in the war, some discussion about what soldiers sacrifice to protect our country, or peace keep in other countries. Finally we wrote about what soldiers sacrifice, and then wrote a short thank-you note on a postcard for local veterans.

Included here are some examples of our students' postcards.

Inquiring Minds The three Gr. 1-2 classes will wrap up their study of bats with a visit from Dr. Willis of the University of Winnipeg. He’ll help us answer our tricky wonders and will tell us about “White Nose Syndrome” and how it affects bats.

Fascinating Facts About Bats! Vampire Bats drink about 30mL (2 Tbs) of blood a night. Their teeth are so sharp the animal being bitten (horse, cow, chicken, turkey) doesn’t feel it. These bats have the fewest teeth of all bats. Ghost Bats get their name from their pale colour. A Banana Bat has a long snout and a tongue that’s two-thirds the length of its body - helpful when feeding from long-tubed flowers. If you’ve seen a bat in Winnipeg it’s probably a Brown Bat. Bats can be helpful to farmers by eating insects that damage crops (e.g. grasshoppers) and by helping to pollinate plants. Check out our bat wonders and links on the IBL – Bats page of the wiki: https://ibl-mrsgibson-wayoata.wikispaces.com/ Next up: Mr. Kowal’s class will be studying light, Ms. Descoteau’s class will be studying forces and Mr. LePage’s class will writing a variety of poems about winter…”Snow-etry!”.

Kids Helping Kids Students in the KHK Club have been busy planning and crafting for our annual Craft Sale to be held at the Christmas concerts on Wednesday, Dec. 16th. Drop by the front lobby during the afternoon and evening performances. Items will be priced from 25 cents to $5. Students will be invited to make purchases during the day. All proceeds will go to charities. We hope to see you there!

Wayoata Students and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra

On November 4th three students from Wayoata School were a part of a division wide concert that performed with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. They joined together with students from all of the early years schools in our division to form a 200 student choir. Congratulations to Alyssa, Nieve, and Sincerity for all their hard work! They attended many rehearsals at school with Mr. McPherson to prepare them, giving up recesses and lunch times. Starting on October 27th the students had 3 daytime rehearsals out of the school at Eastview Community Church, and a very exciting dress rehearsal at the concert hall. The evening of the concert, our choir performed three pieces. Siyahamba was sung in Swahili and English. Going Home was a beautiful slow song, and A Splash of Blue was the first time our divisional choir has done a totally percussion song with the WSO. We played the boomwhackers (the colourful tubes you see in the picture) in 8 different parts!

Congratulations again for a wonderful concert.

Positive Behaviour Committee

This past month, we have been practicing meeting the school expectations by entering in the mornings and after each recess in a calm and quiet manner. Blue tickets have been handed out to students meeting expectations as they enter the building. We have been tallying blue tickets together as a school. To date we have collected over 1000 tickets from students who are entering the building following the entry matrix. The school wide reward is now within reach and students will be finding out what our exciting reward will be soon. We are excited to see the wonderful work students have been doing on the entry matrix! The playground matrix is our focus for the coming month. Please take some time to have your child(ren) explain the expectations represented in the playground matrix shown below.

Mrs. Treacy has been filling in for Mrs. Weiss in the office for several weeks. She has been busy helping everyone out, which is not an easy task when you are new to a school. Mrs. Weiss will be returning on December 7th and we thank Mrs. Treacy for all of her work while at Wayoata.

Greening Committee Christmas Bake Sale

The Greening Committee will be holding a bake sale during both the afternoon and evening Christmas Concerts on December 16th. We are inviting Wayoata families to participate in one of two ways – either as a supplier of baked goods for the sale, or as a buyer of these baked goods. If you are able to help with baking, please send these items packaged and ready to sell (labelled with the name of the item) to school on December 15th. (We will look after the pricing of the items).

Please keep the following information in mind regarding this bake sale:

In keeping with our divisional policy regarding allergies, we would ask that all donations for the bake sale are nut

free.

Our school is concerned about the health and welfare of all our students. Although we have requested nut free

products, we cannot guarantee that all donations of baked goods will be safe for children with allergies. If your

child has an allergy we encourage you to use this information to make the most appropriate decision for your

child. Additionally, please note that RETSD policy states that it is the responsibility of students with life

threatening allergies to only eat food provided from home and not purchase food products from school.

If there are any leftover items, they will be available for students to purchase the next school day. Thank you for your support!

At this time of year, our thoughts often turn to those who are less fortunate……..

Christmas Hamper/Food Drive At Wayoata School this year we are once again organizing a food drive that will serve two purposes - creating Christmas hampers for needy families in our community and supplying food for the Transcona food bank. We are inviting our students and their families to bring contributions of food, toiletries, laundry detergent and new unwrapped toys to put under our Christmas tree in the front foyer of the school. The food and other items will be used to create three hampers for needy families in our community to support the work of the Christmas Cheer Board. Further information regarding items required for the hampers (i.e. specific age of children in the families to determine the gifts needed) will be sent home with students as soon as we get the details from the Christmas Cheer Board.. After we have met all of the requirements for the hampers, any other donations of food or other items will be sent to the local food bank. Please send any items for the hampers to the school by December 14th as we need time to organize and deliver the hampers to the families. We will continue to collect donations until December 18th for the food bank.

Student Voice News

Student Voice participated in National UNICEF Day 2015. Student Voice representatives challenged their classmates to raise money for children around the world by donating change to our “Change for Change” campaign. As a school we raised $447.02 that will be deposited into UNICEF Canada’s account. Congratulations to the top two classes who raised the most money. Mrs. Morin & Mrs. Grabau’s grade 5 class raised $95.99. Miss. Luchka’s morning kindergarten class raised $82.51.

Thank you to all families who participated. Stay tuned for information on our next project.

At Our School Campbell’s Labels for Education In the past, as a school we have been involved in collecting labels from Campbell products. We have learned that for every 45 labels we collect, we can provide one healthy midday meal for one child overseas through the Campbell’s company and the Free the Children organization. Our grade 5 students who attended WE Day this month have been busy counting boxes of labels that had previously been collected. We would like to continue collecting labels to feed children in need. Please help us by collecting UPC labels from the

following products: Campbell’s Condensed Soup, Campbell’s Chunky Soup or Chili, Habitant Soup, Campbell’s Ready to Serve Soup, Campbell’s Easy Cooking Sauce, Campbell’s Ready to Use Broth, V8 Soup, Goldfish Crackers, V8 Vegetable Cocktail, V8 V-Fusions and V-8 Splash Beverage

Or lids from the following products: Prego Pasta Sauce, Pace Salsa, Campbell’s Soup at Hand, Healthy Request Bowls, Campbell’s Chunky Bowls, Campbell’s Hearty Noodles

You can send the labels and lids to the school at any time throughout the year.

Wayoata School Greening Committee Update This committee has been busy! Along with the grant they received this summer from Canada 150, they also received grants from The Federated Co-operatives Limited and Toyota Evergreen. The $5000.00 from the Co-op Grocery stores and the $2000.00 from Evergreen will allow the committee to have a topographical survey done of the playground, to buy supplies needed for a fence art project planned for the spring, to buy some trees and to start creating a butterfly garden. We appreciate the support of these two organizations in our community. The proceeds from the Bake Sale being held at the school on December 16, during the Christmas Concerts, will go towards the Wayoata School Greening Project. Please bake and buy goodies. The committee will continue asking for support through the various grant opportunities. As a school community, we need to say a huge THANK YOU to Mrs. Frank for the countless hours she has spent talking and meeting with representatives of funding organizations and filling out grant applications for this project. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated and passionate volunteer. If any parents are interested in joining this committee to assist with the planning and implementation of the playground greening project, please contact the school and leave a message for Christine Frank or Cat Pearson.

When The Cold Weather Comes………… Weather information is available on radio and TV, at Environment Canada’s site on the Internet at www.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca or by calling Environment Canada at 204-983-2050. School divisions in metro Winnipeg will be using the temperature at The Forks as the indicator of severe weather.

Dressing for the Weather Parents please help us ensure your child is warm when he/she goes out for recess and lunch breaks. The fresh air and time to exercise are important even during winter months. All children are required to go outside for all recesses including lunch recess unless the temperature reaches -27ºC or the wind chill reaches –27. On cold days, before each recess, we will check with Environment Canada for accurate information about the temperature and the wind chill factor. Please do not ask us to keep your child in at recess or lunch since all supervision is assigned to the playground. A child who is too ill to go outside for recess should not be at school.

IMPORTANT BENCHMARKS -27 or colder: Students will stay inside for recess. -27 C to -34 C: Student patrols will only be on post for ten minutes. -35 C to -40 C: Student patrols will only be on post for five minutes.

Posts located more than a five minute walk from the school will not be patrolled.

Below -40 C: No student patrols on post.

During the winter months, whether walking to school or ‘on post’, warm clothing is essential and facial protection is recommended.
