ABOUT US
Founded in 2010, Swiss Medical Food AG is a relatively new company with its headquarters in Appenzell (Switzerland). Our name says it all: we are experts in developing and distributing dietary foods specifically for patients with cancerassociated malnutrition.
Boasting many years of experience in the medical technology sector, pharmaceuticals and the food industry, our management team’s sound expertise in these fields form the basis of our business idea: to offer a dietary concept that caters for the needs of those who have special nutritional requirements owing to their medical circumstances.
Our company
OUR OBJECTIVE
As an expert in nutrition plans for specific illnesses, our aim is to offer doctors and patients assistance, enabling patients to have an improved quality of life within an integrated programme of treatment by offering them suitable dietary options.
To ensure this our actions are closely oriented towards the specific needs of our partners, in particular doctors and their patients. Our nutritional concept was developed in collaboration with doctors and patients and we continue to consult with them on a regular basis.
OUR MISSION
Our dedicated approach is based on achieving a balance between innovation and triedandtested methods, always keeping the patient’s needs at the centre of our efforts. We consider the particular illness and the related nutritional issues when developing our concepts.
We value the trust placed in us by our clientele, and we show our appreciation by acting responsibly and offering an extremely reliable service. We are open to new and innovative developments. This means also having the courage to break new ground and open up new possibilities for our patients in the field of nutritional concepts for diseases caused by tumors on the basis of triedandtested research.
Our nutritional concept
LOW-CARBOHYDRATE DIET
Malnutrition and weight loss are common in cancer patients and are due to a variety of mechanisms involving the tumor.
Cancer cells need a lot of sugar to ensure uninhibited growth. Consequently, they transmit signals which make healthy cells resistant to the body’s own sugar hormone, insulin. This tumorinduced resistance to insulin makes the healthy cells unable to absorb the “normal” amount of sugar like they used to, leaving the sugar largely available to the cancer cells.
A diet with a reduced carbohydrate intake helps the blood sugar and insulin levels to remain low so that less sugar is available to the cancer cells. In order to keep your strength up and prevent the risk of malnutrition or unwanted weight loss, you should make sure you consume more protein and healthy fats in your diet. These nutrients can be effectively utilised by healthy cells, but they are of little use to cancer cells.
