Welcome to Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), the future of immersive entertainment! If you want to

enable new video-based services that attract the next billion subscribers, this is the best place to start.

A new era is emerging. Interactivity is increasing as TV becomes a social experience that is community

driven, empowering, deeply engaging, and mobile. IPTV has already been successful in ‘niche’ segments

with very specific and identified business models. It is now about to go mainstream as technical

barriers fall and new business models form at the intersection of content, advertising, and infrastructure.

At Sun, we believe the outlook for IPTV is very promising. The technical and economic roadblocks have

disappeared. With Sun and its partners, service providers and media companies can now deploy IPTV

solutions that live up to the promise of immersive, personalized programming, anytime, anywhere.

Our early adopters range from the reach of AT&T’s U-verse to the highly personalized experience of

Sezmi. We want to show you how you can do it, too. Visit a Sun Solution Center, and our experts will

help you build and test prototypes of IPTV solutions from Sun and our partners. It’s a great way to

minimize risk, justify expenses, and shorten time to deployment. To learn how you can take a free Sun

a Slow StartIP Video Distribution (often called IPTV) has yet to reach

critical mass. But it’s not surprising. Common approaches

range from enabling movie-length downloads over existing

IP connections to building end-to-end, private, managed

networks to deliver high quality video-on-demand

services. The first approach lacks scalability, and the

second cannot generate enough subscriber revenue to

justify capital and operating expenses. And neither

approach leverages the intrinsic strengths of IP networks

which naturally identify individual users, provide real-time

feedback and connect universally.

Focus on the SubscriberToday, enormous opportunities exist for service providers

and media companies who can fully embrace the personal,

interactive, and open nature of IP networks. They must

transform the viewing experience into one that’s user-aware,

community driven, empowering, and deeply engaging.

The foundation of a sustainable IPTV service business is

the subscriber. For example, IPTV can drive subscriber

adoption by offering vast new “value-added programming”

choices that reach beyond the capabilities of broadcast

television and yet have great value to each viewer when

properly targeted. This programming content includes:

• Lifestyle/hobby videos

• Advertising/advertorial videos

• User-generated videos

• News footage edited out of broadcast news

• Local merchant advertising developed for subscribers

• Movie/sitcom out-takes, trailers, bloopers

• Re-runs that could be packaged into thematic channels

• Long-form content from cultural, religious, and local

sporting events

Most viewers have a strong interest in this content at

some point in their recreational cycle and would be

willing to pay a fee proportional to its immediate

availability when their interest peaks. It’s a model very

similar to youTube. Though youTube is free, millions

of viewers spend hours in front of a hunt-and-click

mouse/Web interface on a desktop monitor looking for

content relevant to them at that particular moment.

The price they pay? Poor resolution, poor production

quality, and abbreviated content.

In contrast, the content IPTV can provide has SD/HD

resolution, near-professional production quality, and is

instantly accessible from the couch with a remote. Plus,

as the viewer selects and watches clips, an ad engine

can insert relevant advertising for “opt-in” subscribers.

When provided as a value-added package to traditional

TV, it creates a subscriber-focused viewing experience of

substantially higher value than the common models in use.

value-added programming (iptv) revenue Model

Here’s a revenue model that shows what a service provider could expect per subscriber per month.

In this model, 40% more revenue is collected per subscriber. In US dollars,

this includes $15/month for access to value-added programming and

$10/month from advertisers for targeting “opt-in” subscribers with relevant

ads based on their viewing patterns. A 60-80% attach rate can be expected

for a rich/relevant content library.

Easy paybackThe most significant expense is the fixed cost of setting up the infrastructure

that delivers the value-added content. Though this varies depending on

subscriber density and network design, Sun and its partners have modeled

fixed costs that result in payback in less than two years. And once established,

the same IP infrastructure can be used to offer additional fee-based services

that can reduce payback to one year, including perimeter surveillance,

intercom, VoIP, nPVR, Web access, and more.

the Smart approachInstead of tacking on video to an infrastructure designed for web services,

an IPTV experience that leverages intrinsic IP strengths both supports a linear

TV business and provides a foundation for incremental fee-based services.

It’s a far more successful approach to IPTV, and right now is the right time

to make an investment in this emerging market. Sun has the expertise, the

technology, and the partners you need to get there quickly, so when the IPTV

market explodes, you’ll be positioned with a seriously competitive advantage.

Solutions (acS)

To make IPTV happen in a sustainable and profitable way,

leading consulting firm Accenture believes IPTV operators

must meet three main prerequisites. The first is to accept

that IPTV is not business as usual. Therefore, deploying IPTV

may require a service provider to change its organization

and even its culture along with its technology and systems.

The second prerequisite is a readiness to build partnerships.

IPTV deployment is complex, and most organizations have

neither the expertise nor the competence to go it alone.

The third prerequisite is a readiness to deploy IPTV in

stages, not through one “big bang.” Staged deployments

may be more sensible as they enable IPTV providers to

defray risk. Providers should constantly monitor key metrics

such as take-up, cost, and ARPU on a real-time basis, and only

make further investments when required indicators are met.

> SOLUTION OVerVIeW: assetFactory

Many IPTV services are having a tough time attracting

sufficient numbers of consumers and advertisers—in

large part because they don’t yet provide compelling

entertainment that really takes advantage of the IPTV

platform. By separating the acquisition, management,

and deployment of content from its delivery channel,

AssetFactory gives IPTV customers the agility to provide

compelling products based on new programming ideas,

trends, and opportunities.

packaging content into Multiple products, Services, and channelsAssetFactory enables IPTV customers to increase ARPU

through the creation of targeted, relevant, and unique

content services and products. Content controlled by

AssetFactory can be packaged into multiple products,

placed into multiple services, and exploited through

multiple channels. By enabling such services to be

targeted to customers’ preferences, usage is increased.

Associating content with relevant advertising enables

customers to attract targeted advertisers, driving up the

cost per thousand they can charge.

Because AssetFactory is platform-agnostic, it allows

client-side consumers to consume the content they want,

on the platform they choose, at the time they desire.

From the server side, it supports multiple content sources,

including VOD, linear broadcast, and OTT Internet video.

is designed to address the fundamental shifts in consumer

television viewing behavior. Amino’s AssetFactory will

enable Sezmi to craft, target, and deliver a wealth of

different content offerings to each of its customers based

on their viewing behavior and preferences.

q> SOLUTION OVerVIeW: Game On

One of the major issues facing Video Service Providers, be

they cable, satellite, telco or IPTV providers, is a lack of

quality content, especially interactive content that can be

effective in differentiating operators from their competitors.

Currently, video service providers suffer from a shortage

of differentiating solutions as well as a lack of updated

content. This combined shortfall minimizes the number of

early adopters/customers a service provider can attract,

and also minimizes the magnitude of traffic the operator

is capable of attracting to its portal.

The solution DigiQuest delivers is an exclusive, state-of-

the-art interactive games channel, named “Game On.”

The channel offers up to 14 games at any given time,

appropriate for the entire family, and comes complete

with a user-friendly portal from where users can access

the games, check out the high scores, and star prizes.

Content for Game On is regularly updated and rotated in

close coordination with the service provider. Features such

as a Leader board, Prize Play initiatives, and promotions

help increase loyalty and build traffic.

Services available anywhere, on any deviceInteractive games offer advertisers a lucrative audience to

promote their products to, which in turn opens up additional

key revenue sources for service providers, including IPTV

providers. The business benefits are immediate and

immense. Game On is a revenue-generating service with a

pay-to-play business model generating significant revenues.

The channel substantially increases traffic to the interactive

services offered by the operator, boosting revenues attained

from these services. The games can be offered on any

platform a provider is using, including MHP and Tru2Way.

The games can also be run on multiple platforms

simultaneously, if a provider is using multiple platforms

in various geographical locations.

The interactive games also offer an excellent venue to

educate subscribers in remote control navigation to an

operator’s offering of interactive services (revenue

generating services). The Game On brand is also an

excellent way to showcase the operator’s offerings.

Return on investment from DigiQuest’s Game On channel

is almost immediate. There is minimal provider investment

necessary to get started, yet IPTV providers can begin

generating revenue from the channel almost immediately.

> SUcceSSeS

DigiQuest’s channel “Game On” is deployed in several

countries worldwide, with multiple providers in any given

country. The Game On games channel went live in Belgium

in June 2007, and DigiQuest is now broadcasting the games

on the Telenet network and on VTMMa and JIM channels.

> SOLUTION OVerVIeW: digiHost platform

Today, telecommunications companies are eager to compete

with other home entertainment content providers—

such as cable companies—by using Internet protocol

television (IPTV) services. And while some early-mover

telecommunication companies have already conducted

trials of these technologies, many have found that the

solutions are inflexible, or difficult to scale up cost-effectively.

That’s why Digisoft.tv has partnered with Sun to create a

solution that addresses these shortcomings. The DigiHost

Platform is an open-standards-based management platform

designed to offer an interoperable base from which to run

interactive television. It works to simplify the development

and manages the delivery of interactive TV services to

target set-top boxes (STBs).

a Flexible, Scalable platformThe DigiHost Platform is a highly flexible and scalable

service delivery platform for TV applications. It comes with

software developer kits (SDKs) for integration, server-side

extensions, and client development options. Customers and

partners of Digisoft.tv—including network equipment

providers (NEPs), systems integrators (SIs), and independent

software vendors (ISVs)—can use the server to develop

differentiating applications. The platform includes a

Java™ ME enabled STB and Java applications for TV that

include interactive program guides, distance learning,

voting, and games.

The DigiHost Platform maximizes flexibility by supplying

a large range of SDKs, including:

• Integration SDK to connect telco and other infrastructures

• Server SDK to enable the telco/SI to extend the platform

• Client SDK to enable the telco/SI to create the user

interface and applications

• All Java SDKs, integrated to NetBeans™

In addition, an interactive program guide allows a telco

to develop its own Java components to import and

define their own customer experience.

The DigiHost Platform provides all the essential elements

for the deployment of successful interactive TV services.

The platform leverages the built-in scalability of Sun

products, and the use of Java on the STB leverages the

large Java community and its benefit programs. Plus, with

Java ME ports, the cost and complexity of using proprietary

client middleware is eliminated.

> SUcceSSeS

Leveraging years of experience in the broadcast market,

Digisoft continues to deliver solutions that allow operators

to develop, test, manage, and deploy advanced revenue

generating services. Digisoft’s scalable solutions reduce

the CAPEX required to launch differentiating new services,

and increase ARPU.

Sun Streaming System: Suggested configurations

The Sun Streaming System delivers extreme architectural

flexibility to your IPTV deployment. you can start small, with

a deployment that serves a few hundred streams, and scale

to very large systems that handle hundreds of thousands

of simultaneous streams. Providing multi-dimensional

scalability, the system allows considerable latitude in

terms of system performance, storage capacity, and

streaming throughput.

Here we provide suggested configurations* for small-,

medium-, and large-scale Sun Streaming System

deployments, along with estimations for simultaneous

streams and hours of storage capacity, in both standard

and high definition (SD and HD). In addition to the

scenarios described below, configurations can be tailored

to your specific requirements.

*These estimates and configurations are valid as of March 2009. As storage densities, network throughput, and compute power improve, these numbers will scale higher accordingly.

24x7 operations, where global customers rely upon our

systems for high customer Quality of Service experiences.

Our focus is on continuing to develop some of the industry’s

best densities, designs that reduce footprint and power

consumption. These considerations play directly into

our legendary server reliability and lowering the costs

associated with datacentre design such as hot/cold

zones, air-conditioning, power requirements, etc. Naturally,

this directly lowers the actual cost per subscriber for

IPTV operations.

We’re different because we approach IPTV as a system—

something that IPTV customers would expect from a

seasoned systems technology platform provider.

We stay with customers throughout the course of their

deployment, providing them expertise in business model

development, datacenter design, logistics management,

IPTV service, and technical architecture. Sun’s media

experience and account management skills ensure

that clients can constantly leverage the best of Sun’s

technology and services.

The Sun collaboration with Microsoft brings the best

of both worlds to IPTV deployments across the globe.

And to increase the performance of their combined

solution, Microsoft and Sun have built both an

interoperability center on Microsoft’s campus in

Redmond, WA and a Mediaroom lab at Sun’s Menlo

Park campus. Both Microsoft and Sun are committed

to a continuing collaboration that will advance and

improve the worldwide deployment of Mediaroom

on Sun.

With such innovative, affordable, high-performing

technology, it’s no surprise Sun has become a leading

player in Microsoft Mediaroom IPTV deployments.
