dead. This was brought to the attention
of King George V who then issued a
proclamation which called for a two
minute silence. “The Last Post” is
traditionally played at Remembrance
ceremonies. to introduce the minutes
silence. In military life, “The Last
Post” marks the end of the day and the
final farewell. The sounding of
“Reveille” - or, as it is more commonly
known - “The Rouse” ends the two
minute silence, followed by the
recitation of the “Ode of
Remembrance.”
Why is the Poppy a symbol of remembrance?
Flanders - the whole western part of Belgium
- saw some of the worst fighting of the First
World War. The area saw complete
devastation and where there was once homes,
farms and trees, there was just a sea of mud -
a grave for the dead. The only living thing to
survive was the poppy. Poppy seeds can lay in
the ground for many years without germinated
and can only flower where the soil has been
disturbed. The battles of the First World War
churned up such vast area of earth that
millions of poppies germinated and bloomed -
often around the bodies of the fallen soldiers.
A Canadian surgeon called John McCrae
wrote the poem “In Flanders Fields” in
which the poppies symbolise the deaths of
those who fought and the poppy is, today, a
haunting memorial to the soldiers who have
died in any war. In 1918, an American named
Moira Michael wrote a poem called “We shall
keep the faith.” In her poem, she promised to
wear a poppy “in honour of our dead” and this
is thought to have started the tradition of
wearing a poppy in remembrance.
The Eleventh Hour of the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month. Why we still remember:
Often these days, the First and Second World
Wars are just seen as something that happened
in history books and we may buy our poppies
without any real understanding of their
significance. For example, did you know that
57,000 British soldiers were killed in one day
on the Somme battlefields?
Remembrance Day is the 11th November with
Remembrance Sunday always being held on the
second Sunday in November. It was on the
eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the
eleventh month in 1918 that the guns of World
War 1 fell silent. Four years of fighting and
devastation finally ended. The following year,
ceremonies of remembrance took place on what
was then known as Armistice Day. It was
renamed Remembrance Day after the Second
World War.
In 1919, an Australian journalist, Edward
George, wrote a letter to the London Evening
News proposing a respectful silence for the
Remembrance Day is one of the most special days in the British Calendar. It is a day dedicated to the remembrance of those who died serving their country and is both moving and incredibly humbling.

I’ve been talking to lots of people lately about the night Canvey flooded back in 1953. It was over 2 years ago that we last told the story in Your Canvey magazine, so I thought it was a good idea to remind us all of one of the major events that shaped our Island’s history.
On the night of January 31st 1953, Canvey
Island was badly hit when a tidal surge came
down the north sea flooding the low lying lands
in its path. The sea wall was washed away in
the Tewkes Creek area which resulted in the
Island being evacuated and 58 people losing
their lives.
The flood had a devastating effect on many
parts of the country resulting in the loss of 307
lives in total across the UK. The storm also
affected the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark
and France.
Despite the fact that serious flooding had
already occurred in other parts of the country,
no warning was raised on Canvey Island as
there was no effective flood warning system in
place. Many Islanders were not aware of the
flood until they looked out of their windows or
doors to see the rising water levels.
Canvey Island was the last place in England to
be hit in the early hours of February 1st. As the
night wore on and the sea level kept on rising,
the bridge attendant began banging on the door
of a local farmer, Fred Leach, who was also
Chairman of the Canvey Island District
Council. He was concerned because the creek
was beginning to flow over. Fred Leach began

the task of telephoning everyone around
to warn them of the impending flood.
At around 1am, the sea wall itself began
to collapse at Tewkes Creek. It was
extremely sudden and there was hardly no
time at all to warn the residents in the
area. By 1.30am, the water had covered
much more of the Island and many people
were waking to find themselves in great
danger.
People who had been unaffected by the flood
all began to help out in whatever way they
could as the rescue missions began. Boats
were brought out to travel through the waters
in search of those who were still stranded.
As the rescuers went forward, they found
families huddled together on the rooftops
and others still trapped in their homes. The
Primary and Secondary Schools in Benfleet
were opened to allow Islanders somewhere
warm to go to following their ordeal with
many Benfleet residents helping out and
bringing clothes and other supplies.
As the morning arrived, the full extent of the
damage became visible and people realised
the horrors that must have been faced by
many. The army arrived and began further
rescue missions in what was known as
“Operation Canute.” Many people were still
trapped in their homes. The Red Cow public
house (now King Canute) was unaffected by
the flooding and army lorries were used to
carry survivors there from their homes. Men
in boats also looked for survivors.
The whole of the East Coast was in turmoil
but Canvey Island had the highest death
count in the UK with 58 people losing their
lives - eight of them children under 12.

Flood Sirens
Essex County Council is proposing to remove
all the flood warning sirens from their coastline
- this will include all of those on Canvey. We
recommend that any residents who wish to
comment on this matter write, with some
urgency, to the Chief Executive, Essex County
Council, County Hall, Chelmsford, Essex CM1

please don't delay.
Thank You. Brian Wood
Canvey Town Centre
For the last three months we have been fully
engaged on the regeneration of the Town
Centre. This important document will be
ratified soon: we are drawing up our
recommendations to the Cabinet in November.
As a Party we have fought hard in the Policy
groups to get what residents want. For those
that took the time to visit the regeneration shop
in the Knightswick Centre, thank you for your
input & for those who have not yet visited - it's
not too late to have your say. The general
feeling of residents is that you want the Town
regenerated, it is looking sad but as the
document at this stage is still confidential, we
are limited to what we can tell you. Please be
assured that we are fighting for everything
on your behalf.
In a few months all be revealed as it were but
one thing I can promise you is - we are driving
a hard bargain! We will not accept
anything that is not of a very high
standard. We will keep you informed of
course.
Regards, Cllr Neville Watson (Winter
Gardens Ward)
Democracy?
At Full Council on 28th September we
will be calling for CPBC to change from the
current Cabinet system and return to
Committee. Too many major decisions are
being made by Cabinet without any chance of
debate and input from all elected Members.
Strict rules prohibit members from asking
more than one question at Cabinet and
decisions are signed and sealed without any
consultation. We will keep you informed but
we hope that CPBC will bring back
democracy and remove the Cabinet system as
soon as possible.
ATC
The ATC on Canvey recently took part in the
Battle of Britain Parade & Remembrance
service for our brave Airmen. They also led
the march for the Dedication of Standards
Service for the Royal British Legion. On both
occasions they looked brilliant and with their
new equipment (which thanks to generosity
from Canvey residents in recent fund raising,
they had been able to purchase) they were a
fantastic sight and made everyone feel very
proud.
They have also won a competition for the
best turned out unit so “Congratulations” to
them all. Fund raising continues of course
and thanks to all those who have been
involved. If anyone is interested in joining
the ATC they are looking for new intake - so
please contact them at their hall in
Runnymede Road or you can contact Cllr
Neville Watson for information.

From the Dug-out.
We have enjoyed an indifferent start to life in
the Ryman Premier Division. In the first
month of the season we have learnt a lot about
both ourselves and the unforgiving nature of
the league.
Virtually every individual mistake we have
made has led to us conceding a goal and this
has already cost us in terms of results. Teams
in this division have the quality to capitalise
on the smallest mistake or lapse in
concentration. From the eleven goals that we
have conceded so far, at least six have
materialised from our mistakes. Consequently,
we have only taken eight points from the first
six games. I say ‘only’ because I honestly
believe that our performances have warranted
at least twelve points. In all the games, apart
from Lowestoft, we have given a good
account of ourselves and looked more than
capable of being competitive at this level.
However, if you don’t get it right at the
business end, in both boxes, you won’t win
football matches.
Unfortunately in the first four games, the
individual mistakes and the fact that we had not been clinical in front of goal cost us.
However, a week is a long time in football
and the response since the Lowestoft game
has been excellent. The character and self
belief we have showed in the last three games,
but particularly the Croydon Athletic game,
has been fantastic and suggests that we have
the ingredients to be successful again this
year.
A lot of people devalued that result,
suggesting that Croydon were in turmoil due
to the match fixing allegations made against
their chairman. However, anyone that watched
that game would have seen that the Croydon
players and management were highly
motivated to win the match, because as we
know now, it would be their last game
together as a group. The fact that we were
able to match their desire and commitment as
well as showing the confidence to get the ball
down and pass it, holds us in good stead for
the challenges to come.
That performance is certainly our ‘bench
mark’ now and one that we will need to
replicate game in, game out if we are to be
successful this year. Certainly over the last
three games we have looked more of an
attacking force, playing with a good tempo
and lots of movement in the final third. To
score eight goals in the last three games has
been pleasing, as teams that get promoted to
this level, notoriously find it difficult to score
goals.
We know that at this level the difference
between success and failure is so small and if
we can keep playing with freedom and cut out
the individual errors then I think we will be
just fine. We are certainly going to need big
characters and bundles of mental toughness to
overcome the challenges that this league
presents week in, week out.

“Our bungalow, “Sylvester” was at the
furthest point on Canvey Island in Chapman
Road - named after Chapman Lighthouse
which was only three bungalows away and
over the sea wall, out in the Thames estuary.
The first thing we knew about the floods was
when a local fisherman knocked at our door at
8am on Sunday 1st February. He asked to
speak to my Dad. My parents were still in bed
so I showed him into their bedroom as it
seemed to be urgent. He told us that there was
a breach in the sea wall and some houses were
flooded and we had better take blankets onto
the sea wall as it was the highest point, to
evade the water. The tide was still coming in.
We began to put our belongings up high, on
tops of cupboards or anywhere we thought
would be out of reach of the water.
My Dad went off to see if his business was
safe. He had a contract to Ford to make their
tool bags out of Hessian and had it stored a
few miles away. On the way he found that
people were being evacuated on army lorries
from the bus stop known as The Point. Dad
came back along our unmade road which was
full of ruts and had a dyke running the length
of it. He said that we must pack a suitcase and

go to the bus stop, where army lorries
would evacuate us.
It was my job to go over the road to my
Grandparents house to warn them. It meant
crossing a wooden plank over the dyke to
their garden. I noticed as I went over that
the water had risen in the dyke up to about
6 inches below the bridge. When I
returned, it was level with the bridge. We
then paddled down the road with our
belongings with the water was lapping
over the top of my Wellington boots.
I actually found it all exciting, but my
Mum was crying as she thought she would
never see her home again. The army Lorries
were waiting to evacuate us across the Island
to a school in Benfleet on the Mainland. My
Dad had other ideas. We changed to a bus
half way across the Island and sat upstairs
where we had a good view. We saw cars
almost covered by the sea, bungalows
submerged, sheep and rabbits huddled
together on the slightly raised pieces of
farmland.
Miraculously, no water had come in our
bungalow. It was built on brick pillars and
wasn't in the worst hit part of the Island.
When we returned to the Island, things had
changed. People you knew never came back.
At school the children from Canvey were
given chocolate from children in France.
Canada sent carpets for the flood victims
whose bungalows were ruined. Water marks
were half way up some people's walls. We
were very lucky!”

Island Archive website with thanks to Carole Peck.

Some of them
don’t work or
do anything
unless you are
in a particular
program such as
Microsoft Word, in which case Pressing F1
brings up a Help Screen. Pressing F5 will
bring up a box in which you can Search your

Nobody has ever asked me what the F11 Key
does BUT you’ll wish you had - especially if
you have a small computer screen on a Mini
Laptop or “Notebook.”
When you are using Internet Explorer to view
a Web Site, notice how at the top of the screen
TOO MUCH room is taken up with Menus,

F11 Key to simply Switch the top Menus &

because you might need them again in a

switch them back on! Treat it as a Switch,
turning it OFF & ON whenever you like.

Canvey Island Football Club keep us updated with the latest news.
I’m sad to say that the FA Cup and FA Trophy
competitions are over for us for another season.
Mammoth games against Dartford of the
Conference South in the FA Cup ended in a 2-2
draw at the Brockwell Stadium and a replay at
Dartford which ended in a 3-3 draw after extra
time, followed by a penalty shoot out which
Dartford won 9-8.
It was a great effort from every one of
the players against a team a division above us
and a team we outplayed for most of the game
at their place. The effort put in seemed to take
it out of the lads as we seemed a little off the
pace in our FA Trophy game against AFC
Sudbury which we lost 2-1. We must now
focus on the Ryman Premier League and the
League and Essex Senior Cups so lots still to
play for. A great 3-2 win away at local rivals
Billericay in the Ryman League Cup 2nd
Round went a small way to easing some of the
disappointment.
On the player front we had to lose the services
of our Striker James Rowe who moved to
Birmingham where he is working full
time for Premier League side Birmingham
Cities Soccer Academy,
this made it impossible to
train and play for us. James
has since joined
Leamington who play in
the Zamorretta Premier
Division and we wish him
well. New signing Alex
Rhodes, who played for
Grays Athletic last season,
is having a great season for
us having scored 5 goals -
one behind top scorer and
penalty king Rob King
who is on 6 goals - all from
the penalty spot.
Our reserve team continue
their unbeaten start to the
season. They are top of the Capital League
with 13 points from 5 games and through to
the 2nd round of the Presidents Cup.
There are always events going on at the club

11th November 1918
After 4 years and 97 days the guns finally fell
silent as the First World War ended. Around 9
million lives were lost and 27 million people
were injured. At 11am on 11th November - the
eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the
eleventh month - a ceasefire came into effect
and opposing armies on the Western Front
began to withdraw from their positions.
Canadian George Lawrence Price is
traditionally regarded as the last soldier killed in
the Great War: he was shot by a German sniper
and died at 10:58.

On this day, Sir James Young Simpson, an
eminent Scottish obstetrician, introduced the
medical use of chloroform as an anaesthetic in
Edinburgh, Scotland. Earlier that year, Simpson
had begun using Ether to relieve the pain of
childbirth, but was dissatisfied with some of
Ether’s drawbacks so a Liverpool chemist,
David Waldie, suggested that Simpson try
chloroform. Simpson and two doctor friends
inhaled some chloroform and, after feeling very
happy and talkative, promptly passed out.
Impressed with chloroform's potency and rapid
effects, Simpson immediately began using it
in his obstetrical practice. The first baby
born to a mother who received chloroform
for pain was named Anaesthesia.

Today is the official birthday of Mickey
Mouse. Although Mickey had previously
made an appearance in one of Disney’s films
“Plane Crazy” in May 1928, he appeared in
their first film with sound “Steamboat
Willie” in the November and this is
celebrated by Disney as his birthday. Walt
Disney designed the character while riding
on a train back to Los Angeles with his wife
Lillian. After completing his sketch, Walt
showed it to Lillian and said his name was
Mortimer Mouse. Lillian did not like the
name and suggested Mickey Mouse.
21st November 1783
The Montgolfier brothers ascended into the
sky in their new invention - the hot air
balloon. The brothers flew for 25 minutes
about 100 metres above Paris for a distance
of 9 Kilometres. This is known as the first
flight of the hot air balloon although some
people claim that the hot air balloon was
actually invented 74 years earlier by a
Portuguese priest Bartolomeu de Gusmão.
However, this claim is not generally
recognized by aviation historians outside the
Portuguese speaking community.

Richard Smith keeps us up to date with the latest news from Canvey Island Rugby Club.
Since the last issue when I stated that I hoped
the news on the playing front would be better
next month, I was right! The first XV results
could not have been any better. Firstly taking
on Old Streetonions and winning 49-20 then
Harlow and coming away with a 36-0. Next up
were Enfield Ignatians who went back to
Enfield losing 30-22.
With the new points system in place this season
4 points for a win, 1point for scoring 4 trys or
more and 1 point for losing by 7 points or less
this has made us at present a respectable 5th
with our next league game against Saffon
Walden who are one point above us. It will be a
big game - that is not to say they are not all big
games though.
In the National Intermediate Cup we played
Deale and Betteshanger and won a scrappy
match 16-3 to take us through to round 2. The
2nds (Stacks) meanwhile, have had mixed
fortunes in their merit table leagues playing
three tough games losing 0-17 to Rochford.
They also won against Chingford 10-8 and lost
to Chelmsford 35-17 but they have plenty of
time to improve on their league position where
at present they are middle table. On the plus
side they got a bye in the Merit Table Cup.
The 3rds (Gnus) have had an impressive run of
results starting with a 40-0 win against Stanford
-Le-Hope, then a 39-0 win against
Pegasus a 34-0 against Ravens and a
46-24 against Rochford
4ths.Unfortunately for them the
points system is not in place in the
merit tables as if it was, they would
be sitting at the top but as it stands
they are 2nd.
We are always on the lookout for new
players junior or senior so if you
fancy a run out get yourself over to
the club. We are at present in the process of
starting up an under 12s team that’s year 8 in
school terms, so if you have a youngster who
has just started rugby at school and likes it,
bring them along any Thursday evening to
the Rugby Club at 5.30pm. Ask for Alan
Evans or Tony Leeming - they are always
willing to help and give advice along with
the rest of the coaching staff. If you are a
parent and want to get involved, please don’t
be afraid to ask - that’s Mums and Dads.
On the domestic front things have been a bit
quite but we are now gearing up for the
festive season so if you want to know what’s
going on check out our website at
