Welcome to the July issue of Your Canvey Magazine!

We’re half way through the year already and

it seems that it is really true that the older you

get, the faster time seems to go! Mind you,

perhaps it has something to do with me having

just turned 40 at the end of May that is

causing time to pass at such an alarming rate!

If you still haven’t had chance to buy your

copy of our new Canvey History book - Your

Canvey Memories, you can now find it in

Happy Days, Furtherwick Road (on the corner

of Oak Road) or at the reception desk of the

Oysterfleet Hotel. You can also order it on

our website at

www.yourcanveymemories.co.uk

You can also call us on 01268 696404 and if

you live on the Island, we can often deliver

your copy on the same day! If you enjoy our

sections, you will enjoy this book. It also

On 12th June, over 1000 local residents braved the bad weather to attend this year’s Canvey’s Got Talent

contest at Thorney Bay Park.

Over 50 contestants took part in the

competition with the standard being

higher than ever. Throughout the day,

there were special guest appearances

from local Boy Band, The Split, 2010

winner Bethany Goward, 2009 winner

Georgia Garret and 2010 winner of

“best dancer” Sharmain Boughton.

This year’s winner was 30 year old

Opera singer Nina Smith who now has

the opportunity to sing at the Castle Point

Show as well as other local events.

Second place went to 22 year old singer

Charlie Sansom from Pitsea who only

just beat his older brother Lee who took

third place. Their trophies were presented by

local MP Rebecca Harris who was also one

of the judges.

All monies raised from the event - which is

now in it’s 4th year - is being donated to

Haven’s and Little Haven’s Hospices.

The Cast & Crew Theatre Workshop are

all set for their latest production - the

comedy “Why Me?” by Stanley Price.

There are secrets, lies & P45s a plenty as

Cast & Crew take us back to the 80s to find

John having recently joined the ranks of the

unemployed and living in the shadow of his

wife’s hugely successful business. Trading

his three piece suit for a house coat and

duster, John is not enjoying the change to

house husband. With temptation just over

the garden fence, John’s philandering puts

his marriage on the rocks. On top of this, he

has to cope with his mother-in-law popping

in from the granny flat unannounced as well

as the return of his son with a shocking

secret!

“Why Me?” will be presented on Friday

8th and Saturday 9th July at St Nicholas’

Church Hall. Doors open at 7.15pm with

curtain up at 7.45pm. Tickets are £6

(Concessions £4). To pre-book tickets just

The 25th July is St Christopher’s Day. He is the patron saint of travelling and travellers, mariners, ferrymen

and also athletes.

There are several accounts and legends

surrounding St. Christopher’s life and death.

There are known historical facts that he lived

in the late third and early fourth century and

was taken prisoner in a war with the Romans

in North Africa, present day Libya. He was

forced to travel a great distance back to

Rome and was assigned as a Roman army

officer during the reign of Emperor

Diocletian. This emperor decided to

persecute Christians, and to his surprise one

of his guards refused to participate and

proclaimed himself a Christian. This

Christian was our current day St. George.

The emperor ordered that St. George be

tortured and killed. St. Christopher watched

the torture and killing and shortly after

declared himself to also be a Christian so the

emperor declared St. Christopher be

tortured and put to death.

Legends depict St Christopher as a giant

who devoted his life to carrying travelers

across a river. One legend states that

Christopher, supposedly a Canaanite,

was a giant of fearsome appearance, who

first decided to serve the Devil, but

finding that the latter was afraid of Christ

and his Cross, decided to serve Christ

instead. A hermit instructed him in the

Christian faith, and assigned to him as

his Christian service residence near a

river and helping travellers to cross it.

Another popular legends includes the

story that one dark and stormy night, a

child came to Christopher and asked to

be carried across the river. Christopher

put the child on his shoulders and waded

into the wild river. He found the child

unusually heavy and had to struggle

desperately to reach the other side. When

he reached the other side, the child told him

that he was Christ and that he had carried the

weight of the world on his shoulders. The

literal meaning of the name Christopher is

Christ Bearer.

Medallions with St. Christopher’s name and

image are often worn as pendants by

travellers to show devotion and to ask for his

blessing. His

statues were

placed at the

entrances of

churches and

houses and often

bore the

inscription:

“Whoever shall

behold the image

of St. Christopher

shall not faint or

fall on that day.”

Charity Football Tournament - A Match for Carlo

A celebrity football match is being held on 16th July in memorial of Canvey resident Carlo Bracci. The event is being organised by Carlo’s brother, Toni, and all profits will go to the British Heart Foundation.

Carlo Bracci, a much loved member of the

Canvey community, died suddenly in

October 2010 of the heart condition

Cardiomyopathy which led to a blood clot in

his lungs. The father of four played for the

successful Canvey Sunday league team

Talwin FC and his team mates, including

brother Toni, have rallied together for the

match in July.

A Talwin FC team from their treble winning

season of 2001 (in which Carlo played) will

play a Celebrity 11 team at Concord Rangers

Football Club, Thames Road. The celebrities

who have agreed to play include rap star

Tinchy Stryder, the Only Way is Essex’s

Mark Wright and TV presenter Jeff Brazier.

Toni, who will be captaining the Talwin FC

team, said: “We’re really excited, it’s going

to be a great day. Canvey is a really tight

community and Carlo was so well loved. It’s

been great. People have just rallied around

and called up friends and contacts.

All of the celebrities have confirmed they

will attend unless they have any last-minute

changes, so we’re hopeful.”

Events on the day will include a barbecue

and a raffle of prize memorabilia, including

signed England, Arsenal and West Ham

United shirts.

Janet Penn of the Canvey Community Archive, recently acquired an interesting cutting from a 1934 issue of “The Architect & Building News” explaining in detail the construction of the Labworth Cafe and Restaurant.

The Labworth was built in 1932-33 by a

distinguished engineer called Ove Arup and

was designed to resemble the bridge of

Queen Mary. The cafe was originally called

the Canvey Island Cafe but eventually

became known as the Labworth Cafe as it

was situated within the Labworth estate and

had “LABWORTH” painted around the

inland third storey in large text.

The article in the Architect & Building News

describes the building as an “attractive

concrete structure consisting of a main

circular building housing the cafe. Kitchen

and lavatories with two wings forming

shelters.” It goes on to describe the

difficulties faced when constructing the

structure due to the marshy nature of the soil

and how it necessary to carry the whole

structure on piles.

“19 precast reinforced concrete piles were

used for this purpose, eight being driven

under the circular portion and eleven under

the wings forming the shelter.”

Some 20 years after the article was written,

the Labworth underwent the first of several

alterations following the 1953 flood. The

construction of the new sea wall made it

necessary to raise the ground on the North

side of the building meaning that the piles

(as seen in the picture to the left) were buried

and reducing the building from three to two

storeys.

The building fell into disrepair before being

bought in 1998 by a local businessman who

refurshished and reopened it.

South Essex Koi Club members found them all to be run in a very

formal manner with committees and wanted

something without all the red tape often

involved in larger organisations.

The club members all believe that learning

doesn’t have to be a serious process and try

to make the meetings fun. All members get

support from others in the club from

microscopic diagnosis of koi ailments to a

discounted shop for food and pond parts.

They also hold an annual dinner and dance

and regular trips to other clubs in the south

of England.

The South Essex Koi Club is a friendly local club holding meetings once a month at St Mary’s Hall in Benfleet.

The club was formed 11 years ago by a

group of koi enthusiasts who decided that a

new type of Koi Club was needed to

promote their hobby. Although there were

other groups in the area, the founder

The Breathe Easy group of Canvey Island

held a tombola in the Knightswick Centre

on 18th June whilst offering free breathing

tests for local residents. The event raised a

total of £297.76 for the British Lung

Foundation. Members of the group would

like to thank all those who participated

including Rebecca Harris, the Lady

Mayoress, the Canvey Island Rotarians

and Councillor Ray Howard.

A second event - again offering free

breathing tests - will be held at Waterside

on 24th July.

Canvey Island Breathe Easy meets at The

Paddocks Community Centre on the 3rd

Thursday of the month - 2pm - 4pm.

Are you aged between 9 and 12? Do you enjoy reading books?

A new Reading Club has launched at Canvey

Island Library and will be run by ten year old

Ben Owen. Leigh Beck pupil Ben was

approached by library staff to help organise

the reading club as he is a regular visitor to

the library and has an interest in reading all

kinds of books.

The aim of the Reading Club is to encourage

young people to talk about the books they

are reading and to find out what others

enjoy. These sessions will also give them the

opportunity to find out about the latest titles

being published and to choose which books

they want to see in the library. Girls and

boys between the ages of 9 and 12 are

encouraged to come along and make new

friends and have fun.

The group will be held on once a month on

every second Tuesday and everyone who

enjoys reading is invited to attend. The

reading club is FREE to join.

Link Radio Trust

Angela Owen with Chairman John Brennan

Last month, I was pleased to be invited to appear on the “Getting To Know You” spot on Link Radio, a voluntary local station providing a radio service tailored to the residents of sheltered accommodation.

Link Radio Trust has been running for 25

years and is broadcast 365 days a year, 24

hours a day to elderly residents in sheltered

housing schemes through-out Essex. It is

manned and run solely by volunteers who

willingly donate their time not only to

broadcasting but to raising the much needed

funds to keep the station going.

The station was founded in 1984 by John

Brennan who is still the chairman of the

trust. It provides all types of music and a

whole range of shows including Gardening

programmes, and feature shows such as

“Getting to know you” and “Story Time” -

both of which feature people in the

community that have a interesting story to

tell.

Since the outset, Link Radio Trust has been

entirely self funding. Manned entirely by

unpaid volunteers, the running costs

have been manageable over the years

by holding a number of excellent

fundraising events. This year,

however, there is a problem and a

need to raise a large amount of funds.

The Hadleigh based studio has been

affected by subsidence and wood rot

and needs to be completely rebuilt in

order to continue providing the much

loved radio service to the elderly. A

total of £100,000 is needed and

various events are currently in the

pipeline to raise money to have the

studio re-built. Fundraising is already

underway, the most recent of which included

5 members of the team running in the

London Marathon.

A Celebrity Auction is planned for later in

the year and the Trust are currently on the

lookout for any autographs or other signed

memorabilia you would be willing to donate.

A 40s dance with Melvin Beddows Big

Band is being held on 11th September to

celebrate the 25th Anniversary. This event

will be held at the Runnymede Hall, Benfleet

and tickets are just £15 (40s dress is

optional) Forthcoming events also include an

Open Flower Garden, Chinese Buffet and

Karaoke night.

If you would be interested in helping of with

trust, there is always a place for someone

who can demonstrate commitment,

reliability, and a sense of caring with self-

pride in their ability to serve others, and not

let the team down. There are many interests

within Link that you could get involved with

as well as helping with fund raising.

For more details of all these events or to find

out how you can become involved with

supporting Link Radio Trust, contact 07865

Two students from Castle View School completed a sponsored walk in June to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

Emma Fuller and Lauren Payne raised

almost £400 in sponsorship through their

walk from Smallgains, Canvey Island to

Old Leigh. This is Emma’s third sponsored

walk and although she has previously

raised money for animal charities, she

decided this time to raise finds

for Cancer Research UK in

memory of a family friend,

Mick Penn - also from Canvey

Island. Emma and Lauren

wore fancy hats for their walk

in order to help raise

awareness.

Emma and Lauren’s parents

both agreed “We are very

proud of the girls’

achievement. They have both been brilliant

and are a credit to their school.” A

representative from Cancer Research UK

will be attending the school in the near

future so that Emma and Lauren can

present the cheque to them.

Emma and Lauren would like to thank

everyone who supported them in the walk,

especially Joe Mander who helped them to

find and set up a fundraising web page to

promote their efforts.

Most supporters probably think that it all goes quiet down at the club in the closed season and Directors, Management and Volunteers kick back and take a well earned rest. Well that couldn’t be further from the truth as, for many of us, this is the busiest time of all. For example:

The manager has to immediately work on

putting together his squad for the new

season, working within a wage budget set by

the Club Board. We hope that many of last

years players will still be with us and that the

squad is strengthened by adding a few

quality players that will push us on into the

play offs or even better achieve automatic

promotion next season to the Blue Square

Conference South Division.

Sponsorship is hugely important to all clubs

and we are no different as it is needed to

ensure a good players budget and to ensure

that all the bills can be paid. At the time of

writing, we are in talks with several new and

existing sponsors and hope to be able to

announce more details in the next issue of

Your Canvey. There are numerous ways in

which companies and, in fact, individuals

can sponsor or advertise at Canvey Island

FC. If you would like to know more then

contact our Sponsorship and Press

Officer Chris Sutton on 07740 921532.

The Stadium needs a bit of TLC to ensure it

looks its best for our fans and to meet FA

rules around Ground Grading / Stadium

Condition which they carry out every 2

years. This is where our fantastic volunteers

help with painting, cleaning and repairing.

It’s a huge job that anyone can help us with.

Just turn up at the Stadium on a Saturday

morning and if there are things to do we can

put you to work.

Our Groundsman and his helpers have to

maintain the pitch after it has gone through

its major yearly make over. We invest a

significant amount of money into the pitch to

ensure we have a very good playing surface

that will stand up to a long hard season. It’s

a very short window to get the playing

surface ready for the start of pre season

friendlies. We are probably the only people

on the Island hoping for rain during the

summer which makes a huge difference to

the quality of the new grass. Our playing

surface has always been very good which is

down to the excellent and dedicated work of

our Groundsman.

Pre Season friendlies have to be arranged

with all clubs trying to get the best possible

teams to play against that they can as it

brings in much needed revenue prior to the

season starting. This year the season starts

on Saturday 20th August with fixtures due

out sometime in mid July. We have so far

managed to arrange a very good set of

friendlies and are currently working on at

least one more high profile game which will

be announced on our website

when confirmed. Friendly matches and dates

arranged so far are as follows:

Saturday 16th July - Away to Heybridge

Swifts of the Ryman North

Friday 22nd July - Home to Chelmsford City

of the Conference South - 7.30pm kick off

Sat 30th July - Home to Southend United of

the Football League

Tuesday 2nd August - Home to Dulwich

Hamlet of the Ryman South

Saturday 6th August - Home to Dartford of

the Conference South

Tuesday 9th August - Home to Grays

Athletic of the Ryman North

Saturday 13th August - Home to

Thamesmeade Town of the Ryman South

On Sunday 5th

June Canvey Island

Youth FC opened there new football

pitch, The Sid Cope Recreation

Ground or as it will be locally known

“The Cope.”

The opening was well attended by

players, parents, managers and

supporters and a 5 a-side tournament

was held to mark the occasion.

The pitch which is at Waterside Farm

has been named after the Youth

Club’s President Sid Cope.

Sid has been part of youth football on

the Island for many, many years. As a

father to only daughters, whilst the

girls were part of the local majorette

group, Sid soon found something for

the boys to do and Canvey Majors

was born. Sid has continued to play a

huge part in Youth Football at Canvey

Island FC and is looking forward to next

season.
