From Fr. Miller: We have been reading from the Book of James in our second read- ing. The Book of James is an inspiring New Testament wisdom book, which considers the need for faith and works. Last week we heard that Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Fa- ther, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world. This week we hear the pro- found rhetorical question: Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?The poor are rich in faith! Are we rich in faith? As I walk the Erie Canal and look at the many material blessings we have in the Village of Spencerport and surrounding communities, I see a lot of possibility for increased charity to the needy. This parish has an active Social Ministry Committee, with various outreach en- deavors, and other outreaches such as the St. Pauly Box, Dress-A- Girl, etc. Yet, most of us (myself included) fall into patterns where we just dont think about those in material need frequently. We may fail to offer direct service to the poor for months at a time. It is good to remember that charity begins at home. We serve the same Christ whether we serve Him in the poor and downtrodden, or in our spouse, our children, or our literal next-door neighbors. But there are times when we can go outside of our normal patterns and assist those in very great material need. Welcome to Fr. Sam of the Vincentian Congregation! Being away for a small surgery (the insurance did go through!), I am honored to welcome at our weekend Masses Fr. Sam Samuel. He is from India and will share his missionary experience with us. The usual missionary, charitable, and educational ministries of the Vincentian Congregation have been disrupted by the outbreak of COVID-19 in India. Should you feel inspired to make a special con- tribution to the efforts of Fr. Sam and the other Vincentians, please use the special envelopes in the pews this weekend, placing them in the collection tubes. Thank you very much for your prayers as well for their initiatives, and know of the prayers of the Vincentian Congregation! Fr. Miller “Day-Off “ and Latin Mass Update

From the day I arrived here in Spencerport, it has been a great honor to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for you myself every single day until Sept 1 when I underwent a small surgical procedure. Funerals and other pastoral and administrative commitments make for a very busy schedule.

I’ve found it time to reconsider my previous plan for a 24-hour day-off period sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday. It seems the only prudent and possible “day off” is Friday. I aim to still celebrate Mass, but to do so privately, perhaps while visiting my parents in the Buffalo area, or at another rectory. Without a real 24-hour off period, I lose energy and focus.

We had been offering the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) on First Fridays. Rather than simply cancel Holy Mass on all the other Fridays of the month, I plan to ask other priests to offer the TLM as they are able to do so. Fr. Van Lieshout has graciously agreed to offer the TLM again on Friday, Sept. 10 at 8a. If you wish to join our email list to be notified when we will not have Mass Friday, contact the parish office.

Bulletin Changes: Beginning in October bulletin requests need to be submitted to the office by Wednesday, 10 days before desired print date. Example: information for bulletin Sunday, October 3rd due to the office by Wednesday, September 22nd, for Sunday, October 10th due to office Wednesday, September 29th. You will always be 10 or more days ahead of the bulletin with your request. When you plan your event include planning your bulletin schedule. You can submit requests earlier than 10 days if desired. Bulletin Guidelines:

Provide date(s) to be printed in the bulletin & contact information if there are questions

E-mail to [email protected] (preferred) or dropped off at the office

Limit of One Save the Date and Two repeating weeks for main information announcement or registration

We reserve the right to edit for space.

Note: If this is a reoccur r ing prescheduled monthly/weekly meeting it will automatically be listed in the Parish Calendar week of. If you want an additional notice you will need to submit a request following the guidelines above.

If you have questions please call the office and talk to Kathy.

Break the Cycle of Poverty: Support the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. On the weekend of Sept. 18/19, we’ll be taking up a collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, a program of the USCCB. CCHD addresses the root causes of poverty in America by supporting self-help organizations of low-income people. These groups are making life better for farmworkers, refugees, people with disabilities and other marginalized folks. Here in our Diocese, four life-changing community organizations are being funded with major CCHD national grants. Learn about them in our short video. By supporting this collection, you are giving people on the margins a hand up, not a handout.

Beware scam emails!

A friendly reminder that Fr. Miller, the parish staff and parish volunteers do not ask via email or otherwise for you to provide gift cards or other assistance for those in need. These are scams! If you look carefully, it’s not our real email address. Pray for the repentance of the scammers, and that they may put their creative efforts to a better use!
