FASIG-TIPTON SARATOGA NEW YORK-BRED YEARLINGS

CURTAIN FALLS ON RECORD FASIG-TIPTON NEW YORK-BRED SALEBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

They saved the best for last during the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred yearling sale, when a son of Cairo

Prince was sold for a sale-record price of $500,000 to highlight an Aug. 13 session that brought down the cur-tain on an auction that eclipsed all previous records.

Coming on the heels of Fasig-Tipton’s selected yearling sale in the same Humphrey S. Finney pavilion earlier in the week, in which the median was a record and the gross and average prices were the second-highest in that sale’s history, the two-day New York-bred sale saw 182 horses change hands for a record $16,214,000, up 18.6% over the $13,672,500 total for 177 head a year ago. The record average of $89,088 represented a gain of 15.3% over last year’s $77,246 and the median rose 25% to $75,000 from $60,000. The 62 horses that went unsold were 25.4% of the total through the ring.

According to Fasig-Tipton, the previous records for gross, average, and median of $14,876,500, $81,739, and $65,000, respectively, were established in 2015 when 182 horses were sold from 252 through the ring.

The New York-bred market is fueled in part by the lucrative New York Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund, which has a tiered rewards system for owners based on whether a horse is a New York-bred sired by a New York registered stallion, or whether it is a New York-bred sired by a non-New York stallion.

"We had a tremendous week," said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. "There was great demand from start to finish. The growth of the New York-bred program continues to be demonstrated on the racetrack and in the sales ring. Participants in the program have continued to step up their efforts in quality and they were rewarded the last two nights.

"It has been a vibrant week. The market has been pretty good since the start of 2017 and I think there has been a sense of optimism. But I really think this week put a little extra oomph and bounce in buyers' and

sellers' outlooks. It's not out of control. The one caveat and asterisk we all have to be mindful of is, we have dealt with pretty carefully selected product this week. We still have a marketplace that is somewhat polarized and we are going to have some days ahead throughout the yearling-sales season that are not going to be as enjoyable as the four days we had this week."

Browning said Fasig-Tipton’s success over the last week means the sale company will have to redouble efforts to improve upon it.

"The good news is, it was a really good week and the bad news is, damn it’s going to be tough to raise the bar on both sales next year," the executive said.

Consigned as Hip 589 by RFHF Bloodstock, the gray or roan Cairo Prince colt was one of the last into the sale ring and exited after being purchased by Ciaran Dunne in the name of Waves Bloodstock, on behalf of a partnership that includes the Florida horseman, some of his associates, and Kirk Wycoff’s Three Diamonds Farm. The previous New York-bred record of $450,000 was set by Mo Diddley last year.

FASIG-TIPTON SARATOGA NEW YORK-BRED YEARLINGS

"I’ve never seen one like him," Dunne said. "He’s as good as they come. We saw him three days ago, looked at him 20 times, and he just gets better every time. We didn’t care he was a New York-bred. He was just a good horse. He could have been here last week (during the Fasig-Tipton selected yearling sale). And believe me, if he was here last week, he would have fit last week. He would have fit anywhere. It’s a lot of money, and it might look stupid, but that’s OK. But right now we feel really good, because we have him.”

The colt was bred by Chris Bernhard’s Hidden Lake Farm and Chris Larsen’s 3C Joint Ventures. His mare, Garden City, purchased by Rhapsody Farm for $37,000 while carrying the colt in utero, when she was offered by Bluewater Sales at the 2016 Keeneland January mixed sale.

"It’s very exciting," Bernhard said, adding that the partners had predominantly sold weanlings, with the occasional yearling put through the ring. "I liked the colt all along and decided to go a little farther (in keeping him to sell as a yearling), and it went well beyond my expectations."

Garden City is by Carson City and the colt's third dam, Pure Profit, produced champion Inside Information and multiple grade 1 winner Educated Risk and is the granddam of champion Smuggler.

The second-highest price during the session was the $315,000 from Bradley Thoroughbreds on behalf of Sheep Pond Partners for a dark bay or brown filly by More Than Ready. Consigned as Hip 459 by Bluewater Sales, agent, the filly out of the winning Irish River mare St Francis Wood is a half sister to stakes winner Saratoga Dreamer and was bred by Aynsford Holdings.

"She has balance. She has quality," said agent Pete Bradley. "You saw how she acted in the ring. She’s by a great filly sire, a running family, and New York-

breds are the thing to have right now. She’s a fancy one. She was one of the nicer horses in the sale, and unfortunately everybody else finds those, too.”

Bradley described the market as "solid. The handful of 'A-plus' physicals are bringing good money, but I’d say there are a lot of useable horses here that are getting bought at good but not stupid prices. It’s a solid market, but still selective.”

"We’ve had some success with the New York-bred program," said Jay Hanley, who purchased the filly with Sol Kumin in the name of the partnership. BH

SONGBIRD TO TAKE ON PERSONAL ENSIGN FIELDBy BloodHorse Staff

Fox Hill Farm's Songbird will make a much anticipated return to

Saratoga Race Course in the $700,000 Personal Ensign Stakes (G1) on Travers Day Aug. 26, as announced by Fox Hill Farm on social media fol-lowing the 4-year-old Medaglia d'Oro filly's five-furlong breeze in 1:01 at Del Mar Aug. 13.

"We are definitely running," said owner Rick Porter. "I want to run at Saratoga. It's my favorite track to run at and I think it's the right race for her anyway: the timing is right, the purse is right, and she's run well there."

Trained by Hall of Fame conditioner Jerry Hollendorfer, the two-time Eclipse Award winner posted back-to-back victories at the Spa last summer with a 5 1/4-length win in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) at the Personal Ensign's 1 1/8-mile distance and a seven-length romp in the 1 1/4-mile Alabama Stakes (G1).

This time around, Songbird could face a formidable cast of older fillies and mares, including top Personal Ensign nominees Forever Unbridled, exiting a victory in the Fleur de Lis Handicap (G2), and recent Shine Again Stakes winner Carina Mia, among others.

"We're going to hook Forever Unbridled, Carina Mia, and whoever else is coming, so it's not going to be a pushover race," Porter said. "But according to Mr. Hollendorfer, she couldn't be doing any better. She worked in 1:01 and they gave her a 'breezing (tag),' which is pretty hard to get at Del Mar. Jerry said she went around the track like she was just jogging."

Songbird owns 13 wins from 14 career starts for earnings in excess of $4.5 million. She was handed the only defeat of her career by three-time champion Beholder by a nose in last year's Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) at Santa Anita Park and returned this season with a pair of grade 1 wins in the Ogden Phipps Stakes June 10 at Belmont Park and, most recently, a one-length win in the Delaware Handicap July 15.

"I asked Jerry the other day to compare her to how

she was a week or two before the Breeders' Cup and he said, 'I got to tell you, Rick, she is better than she's ever been. These two races have just got her in the position where she couldn't be more fit,'" Porter said. "If it weren't for that whisker, she'd be undefeated, but she's still something special." BH

"I'm extremely honored that I've accomplished that," Brown said from Saratoga Race Course Aug. 13. "We're very honored to be the first to do that."

The 2016 Eclipse Award winner saddled Beach Patrol, who took the Arlington Million as second choice, and Dacita, who ran over the top of the field to take home the Beverly D. as fourth betting choice.

Brown said Beach Patrol “fights harder than probably any horse I¹ve ever trained.”

"I have enormous respect for those two races, as did my mentor Robert Frankel," Brown said.

Frankel won both races, but in different years. He won the Arlington Million with Chester House in 2000 and Beat Hollow in 2002, and saddled Heat Haze to victory in the 2003 Beverly D. and had Possibly Perfect win in 1995.

Brown, who worked for several years with Frankel, said those were races the Hall of Fame trainer pointed toward.

"I'd like to think his system lives on," Brown said.

In 27 years, trainers such as Charlie Whittingham, Christophe Clement, and Bill Mott have won those events, but never both on one day.

Brown said he has "no immediate plans" for Beach Patrol or Dacita. "Both came out of the race good," he said. BH

FASIG-TIPTON SARATOGA NEW YORK-BRED YEARLINGS

ROYAL THOROUGHBREDS: A PARTNERSHIP THAT WORKSBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

Britt Wadsworth is a veteran horsewoman who split her time between Ocala, Fla., and Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Sean Mahoney is a hospitality industry professional whose orientation to Thoroughbred racing and breeding was the occasional visit to the racetrack.

Despite those disparate backgrounds, circumstances brought the pair together, and little by little over the last four or five years, they have built Royal Thoroughbreds near Saratoga Springs into a viable commercial breeding and sales entity. Royal had a consignment of about a half-dozen horses at the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred yearling sale Aug. 12-13.

"When I left Ocala I started coming up here six months out of the year, working for trainers like Linda Rice, Ralph Nicks, and Shug McGaughey," Wadsworth said. "I was splitting my time between here and there and met Sean and decided to stay up here."

Mahoney grew up going to the track with his father and his mother grew up on a horse farm in Virginia.

"I was an enthusiast and a gambler, but never actually involved," Mahoney said.

In addition to galloping horses for McGaughey, Wadsworth also worked for Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital. Mahoney is beverage manager for the popular Saratoga restaurant Sperry's.

At one point Wadsworth ran into Danzel Brendemuehl, who operates Classic Bloodstock near Ocala, Fla., and began assisting her with pre-sale "short listing," the practice of paring down lists of auction horses to inspect.

Eventually the three became partners on some horses that Brendemuehl owned.

Located on 14 acres near Saratoga acquired from Bill Wilmot and Joan Taylor, Royal Thoroughbreds has 15 horses of their own and also boards and assists with breeding some clients’ mares.

The farm's mares are bred to Kentucky stallions and then sent to Brendemuehl in Florida to produce their foals. Included among their broodmares is Gitchee

Goomie, a hard-knocking grade 3 winner on the New York circuit who won or placed in 16 of her 22 starts and earned $680,520. She is in foal to Carpe Diem.

Mahoney, 35, acknowledges his learning curve was pretty steep and credits the working relationship between Wadsworth and Brendemuehl as a key to Royal Thoroughbreds' success.

"They complement each other and work awesome together," Mahoney said.

Mahoney is now passionate about breeding and pinhooking, and is attempting to convince others of his age group to invest in breeding partnerships, as well as the racing partnerships in which many are involved.

"I know a lot of guys who are in racing partnerships," he said. "I am trying to get them to supplement their racing with pinhooking and breeding. I bug my friends to get involved in that aspect of (the business). There is a lot of value in doing what we do.

"Once they start to see it, it becomes infectious. I don't have the answer on how to get that next generation involved. It is a lot of work and a lot of capital to make it go. But you can start small." BH

A FIRMER FOOTING FOR RETIRED HORSES AND VETERANSBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Several years ago, Thoroughbred owner/breeder Earle Mack began hearing stories about military

veterans finding relief from debilitating post-traumatic stress disorder through hands-on thera-py sessions with horses.

A U.S. Army veteran who rose to the rank of 2nd lieutenant, Mack became keen on further exploring these overlapping passions of his—finding opportunities for ex-racehorses and raising awareness of a full-blown PTSD crisis that afflicts up to 30% of veterans nationwide and claims an average of 20 lives per day to suicide.

"For the equine industry, the most important thing to us is the horse and protecting them from being mistreated or slaughtered," said Mack, a real estate developer and passionate Thoroughbred aftercare advocate. "As a country, one of our top priorities is to help our veterans that suffer from these mental wounds that are as debilitating or more debilitating than a bullet wound."

Mack could see the potential but also a substantial road block. Though dozens of equine therapy programs

existed, their results were anecdotal and lacked the verifiable evidence required to access broader financial support and acceptance from organizations such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

"You could see these programs getting success with no defined protocol. It was sure to improve with a definitive study and protocol," Mack said. "There had to be a methodology. You can't just do it ad hoc."

Mack needed experts and researchers, so in July 2014 he called longtime friend Dr. David Shaffer, former chairman of Columbia University Medical Center's Department of Psychiatry, who immediately connected him with Dr. Yuval Neria, an expert in PTSD, and Dr. Prudence Fisher, an expert in psychiatric measurement and PTSD in youth.

Neria and Fisher would become co-leaders of the Man O' War Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the first clinical research study to determine the effectiveness of equine therapy on PTSD. Mack kick-started the effort with a $1.2 million grant from his Earle I. Mack Foundation.

"The statistics among veterans are pretty dire with millions of people with PTSD who are maltreated or not treated at all," said Neria, who is a veteran tank commander for the Israeli Armed Forces. "Even the ones

who are treated are not likely to respond more than 50% with the best evidence-based treatment, so we are constantly seeking promising treatments. We started looking at equine therapy with veterans across the country, but, unfortunately, no one before us standardized the treatment protocol or never determined if patients had PTSD with any rigor.

"The project with Man O' War was a great opportunity for Columbia to study this and do things the right way," Neria said.CO

Horses change lives…They provide peace and tranquility to troubled

The Columbia team had loads of expertise with PTSD diagnosis and in conducting clinical trials but lacked experience with horses. The research team started their horse education at the Wallkill Correctional Facility in New York where inmates care for rescued Thoroughbreds as part of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation's Second Chances program. They then attended the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association's annual conference and visited Rancho Bosque in Arizona to see a program run by Dr. Allen Hamilton and Dr. Jane Hamilton, who would later become consultants.

"We talked to a lot of people who have experience with equine therapy to put something together that looked like what was being done in the field but was more specific and standardized," Fisher said. "It is still an experiential treatment but within a larger structure." The program uses a team approach that includes a mental health professional, an equine specialist, and an experienced "wrangler" to provide extra safety.

"We piloted our treatment program with two groups to make sure we made the right decisions," Fisher said. "We changed some exercises that didn't work very well and replaced them with things that made sense and now we have a manual."

The pilot program was conducted at the Bergen Equestrian Center near Leonia, N.J., which is only a 15-minute hop over the George Washington Bridge from Columbia. Two groups of four veterans each met weekly for eight weeks. They were evaluated for PTSD using the CAPS scale, which is considered the "gold standard" for assessment by Veterans Affairs. CAPS evaluates the frequency and severity of 17 symptoms on a scale of 0-4 (none to extreme). A symptom meets the PTSD criteria if it occurs at least one or twice (score of 1) and is at least moderate in intensity, causing some disruption (score of 2). The scores for each symptom are added up to get a final CAPS score. The baseline scores for the pilot program veterans ranged from 46 to 108.

At the end of the program, the veterans' baseline scores dropped between 32% and 74%.

"We were happy to see people improved to a greater extent than we usually see with PTSD treatments, so we swiftly moved to the study," Neria said.

The Man O' War Project started its clinical trial last September with the goal of completing the study by July 2018. Neria said the team needs 50-60 veterans to produce statistically meaningful results. So far, 35 veterans have participated with a majority having completed the eight-week program. The research team continues to put a lot of effort into recruiting through open houses and agencies that provide services to veterans.

"Recruitment is always a challenge but there seems to be a demand for this treatment among both men and women. They are responding well to a treatment outside the office," Neria said.

Neria and Fisher said the clinical trials have produced some remarkable results to date.

"People have less anger and are engaged emotionally with their surroundings... their kids, their spouses. They go back to work and are not afraid to be seen in public," said Neria. "In addition, we see good evidence of symptom improvement across the board including better sleep, less nightmares, less flashbacks, less hyper-vigilance, better concentration, and better memory.

"The beauty of this effect has yet to be fully explained by us or other people," Neria continued. "What is it in this interaction with the horse and the experience in the pen that can bring about this amount of change in the veteran's life? Many of them suffer for years and years and years, and never recover. We are optimistic about bringing them back to a fuller life."

Fisher said a key component of the treatment seems to be the sensitivity horses have to emotion and body language. Because horses are prey animals and hyper-vigilant to any perceived threat, a veteran has to become more self-aware in order to earn a horse's trust.

"They're reactive, and because of their size, when a horse does something you notice," Fisher said. "If you approach it and you're aggressive, it will react to that. The veterans can then reflect on the energy they are sending out. Even with how you hold the shank. When you want to stop, do you look like you want to stop or are you unsure? The horse picks up on when you are unsure, the non-verbal part of how you are communicating.

"I had a guy say to me, 'I'd go to these group therapies and I never knew what I was reaching for. Now I do,' " Fisher continued. "People who are participating really rejected getting therapy in the past. They may get to the end and still need treatment, but now they are open to it."

The program also provides veterans with valuable experience in how to cope with stressful situations at home and at work.

"A circumstance will come up where they catch themselves about to react in an angry way that was

normal for them," said Anne Poulson, who is president of the Man O' War Project board of directors and a former chair of the Virginia Racing Commission. "They remember the reaction and reframe themselves and react in a more appropriate way."

Fisher noted the progressive format of the treatment protocol steadily builds up self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment that results in other positive changes.

"We have had people say, 'If I can get here every week, then I can go do this, too,' or say stuff like, 'I am doing stuff I never thought I would do again,' " she said. "They also learn how to ask people for help and not be afraid to ask for help. They are learning how to function socially and be comfortable."

Once the clinical study is done and the results published, the long-term goal of the Man O' War Project is to share the training manual with other groups in order to enhance their programs and make this treatment available throughout the country. With a standardize, statistically valid approach, these treatment outlets may one day be eligible for support through grants. In late July, for example, a congressional appropriations bill was approved with an amendment from U.S. Rep. Andy Barr (R-Ky.) that provided an additional $5 million for equine therapy for veterans during fiscal year 2018.

"We feel we are well-positioned to take advantage of that funding by having the research and the protocols in place," Poulson said.

As more programs open for veterans, more second-career opportunities will be created for ex-racehorses.

"We have wonderful programs, like those supported by TAA (Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance), and many horses will go on to a show career or pleasure career, but there are a lot of horses that can't have riding careers," Poulson said. "They can still have useful careers. This provides an outlet for horses that don't have another outlet but they are kind."

"A lot of the horses themselves unfortunately were abandoned," noted Neria. "This is an opportunity to create something good to address the needs of both the horses and the humans. It is really a very rare opportunity."

More information about the Man O’ War Project or about seeking treatment through its programs are available at mowproject.org. BH

OPTIMISM FOR HORSERACING INTEGRITY ACT AT ROUND TABLEBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

The 65th annual Round Table Con-ference on Matters Pertaining to

Racing Aug. 13 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., closed out with an update and a rally cry for legislation that would overhaul over-sight of horse racing's drug testing and medication rules.

While a previous version of the bill did not progress to law, The Jockey Club has lost no enthusiasm for the Horseracing Integrity Act of 2017, which would grant the United States Anti-Doping Agency oversight of the industry's drug testing. The legislation aims to end race-day administration of furosemide (Lasix) and bring uniformity to equine drug testing, rules, labs, and enforcement.

While The Jockey Club chairman Stuart Janney III noted that many good things are happening in horse racing such as increased television coverage and successful big events, he said there are still many challenges. He said giving USADA oversight of equine drug testing would address many of the problems the sport faces.

"As you cast your eyes to the list of problems we face, think of how many would be addressed, to some degree, by a uniform system of regulation, good testing, and penalties with teeth," Janney said. "It wouldn't address all of our sport's issues, but it would be a great start and meaningful foundation for growth. I hope you all will work with Jockey Club to work toward that day."

Speakers such as Thoroughbred owner Barbara Banke of Stonestreet Farm noted that such changes would improve integrity, which would increase fan confidence in horse racing, make U.S. bloodstock

more attractive to international buyers, and make the sport more attractive to sponsors.

"To win in the long term, we must demonstrate to current and future racing fans that our industry acts with integrity and elevated standards of care to protect the health of our athletes," Banke said. "The morass of conflicting state medication thresholds and rules is too confusing and slow to change. With this bill we can achieve comprehensive reform that is meaningful, both to horse owners and the general public.

"We would benefit significantly and immediately if we standardized best practices across our industry

in medication regulation and testing, which this bill would accomplish. This would increase the perception that our industry is well organized and responsibly self-governed."

Banke pointed to the recent international success stories of Stonestreet homebred Lady Aurelia, who is campaigned in partnership with Peter Leidel and George Bolton, as well as Arrogate and Tepin. She said those successes are bringing a positive international view, but United States racing rules need to be updated to fall in line with international standards.

"A robust future is available to us in an increasingly global business environment," Banke said. "We must foster consumer confidence and make the world stand up and take notice of our American horses."

Shawn Smeallie, executive director of the Coalition for Horse Racing Integrity, is optimistic the Horseracing Integrity Act of 2017 will advance. Many of the owners supporting the proposed legislation have strong political ties to the current Congress. Within the next month, Smeallie expects it to have more than 100 co-sponsors.

Smeallie also anticipates an industry round table hearing as early as this fall. Such a hearing would rank below a formal committee hearing, but would be recorded. He said the proposals in the legislation are an improvement of the current system, and he expects the idea to eventually win over support.

"You have to stick with it. If you just stay with it, eventually the weak arguments are exposed and fall away," Smeallie said. "This industry is really vulnerable to a high-profile accident, or something like that. So I think that as long as we stay with it, we're on the side of the angels. As long as we stick with it long enough, we can make it happen."

Ed Martin, president of the Association of Racing Commissioners International, an umbrella group of state regulators, attended the Round Table and

said he believes many of the goals toward uniformity being pushed through the federal legislation could be accomplished through a compact of racing states. He noted that the bill ultimately has been slow to gain traction.

"When the bill moves out of committee, then it becomes real," Martin said. "Revisiting how we make rules, the regulators have long supported the creation of interstate compacts. We still do. We think that there's more support for that within the industry than there is for this particular proposal."

Janney said there are many positive trends in the sport and eliminating some of the problems will have racing well positioned for further success.

"My sense is, we are at a crossroads," Janney said. "There are many signs of hope, progress, and accomplishment. Let's congratulate those responsible for taking steps to make our horses safer as they run and train. We're making good progress on aftercare—more to do—but much is in place. Our big race days are working and TV coverage is more frequent with better production values. Finally people are watching.

"Creative thinking is creating events like the Pegasus (World) Cup day. (The New York Racing Association) is back in private control and the new management team has produced great results on and off the track. Support for a uniform regulatory system is growing. We see great growth in the (advance-deposit wagering) networks."

In terms of problems holding the sport back, he cited Pennsylvania, where trainer Murray Rojas conspired with trainers to administer drugs on race day and was convicted of 14 drug misbranding counts in federal court. That trial included testimony that such cheating was widespread. He said such scandals have to end, especially in an atmosphere where many states, like Pennsylvania, commit money from added gaming to horse racing and breeding.

"We should be doing better, because it's in our power to do better," Janney said. "It will take those in this room and elsewhere to produce the results we need." BH s Share this story

McKINSEY: BETTER SCHEDULING WOULD ADD HANDLEBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

While negative fan reaction on social media may motivate some tracks to

address overlapping post times, an expert on big data provided a number that might be large enough to push holdouts toward one of the rarest commodities in United States racing: cooperation.

Eight days after the two most lucrative races of Aug. 5—the Whitney Stakes (G1) and West Virginia Derby (G3)—were conducted at the same time, McKinsey & Company partner Ben Vonwiller, presenting at the Round Table Conference on Matters Pertaining to Racing in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., said big data can help U.S. racing develop a better race schedule.

The large number cited was $400 million—as in the estimated bump in handle if tracks were to better coordinate post times. The $400 million figure would represent a 3.7% increase in handle, a spike in wagering not seen in U.S. racing since 2000. Vonwiller said that even if just the five top tracks worked together, the industry could see a $150 million bump in handle.

The 2011 McKinsey report, "Driving Sustainable Growth for Thoroughbred Racing and Breeding," called for such race overlap problems to be addressed, but The Jockey Club chairman Stuart Janney III said that hasn't happened.

"This is money that's available to us if we work together," Janney said. "We should be ashamed of ourselves if we don't figure out a way to take advantage of this."

In an initial McKinsey study, it was found that scheduling most assuredly does matter in terms of handle and that there are available times throughout the day that would allow for improvements. McKinsey recently used big data to formulate a schedule for the NFL and used that approach to initially look at horse racing.

"To give you an idea of the power of this technique, our team, in seven hours, was able to find a schedule that was better than the last one published," Vonwiller said of the NFL work. "We took that team to look at what we could do in racing."

In the study McKinsey looked at races by purse size and saw significant overlap. The study found significant value if such overlap could be eliminated or reduced.

Some feedback from industry stakeholders to McKinsey noted that overlap could only be eliminated if every track cooperates, tracks willing to coordinate efforts to avoid overlap are already doing so, different tracks like to stay on different live schedules in terms of time between races, and post drags defeat many of the benefits of schedule optimization.

Vonwiller left the study convinced that scheduling improvement to avoid race overlaps could be accomplished through development of an algorithm. He also said it would be good to have a central leader on the issue, perhaps a television partner like TVG. BH

COPPER BULLET ALL BUSINESS IN SARATOGA SPECIALBy Erin Sheat @BH_EShea

After a less-than-ideal trip resulted in a second-place finish in the Bashford Manor Stakes

(G3), Copper Bullet delivered a professional effort to win the $200,000 Saratoga Special Stakes Presented by Coors Light (G2) Aug. 13.

Under jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., the Steve Asmussen-trained 2-year-old son of More Than Ready raced in third, went three wide around the turn, and took over in the stretch to win by four lengths at Saratoga Race Course. It was the second win and first graded score for the colt owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds and Willis Horton Racing.

"He ran a good race today. He really did," Asmussen said. "It was an excellent draw for him. He was a little playful in the paddock, but once he got on the track, he was all business. He broke very sharply, (and they went :21 3/5) down the backside, so I was a little concerned with how fast they were going, but I think the racing experience that he's had showed up. ... I think, with the way the race unfolded, it's good that he's had a few races.

"He caused most of his own trouble that day (in the Bashford Manor) by not breaking like he's capable of, and then trying to compensate for it. But he broke well today, settled off of those horses that were going very fast, and he went through the wire with good energy and in a nice final time. He's looked like the real deal and it's good to see him win a race at this level."

In the 6 1/2-furlong test for juveniles, 8-5 favorite Barry Lee and Mo Diddley dueled for the lead as Copper Bullet ran wide just off the leaders. Barry Lee

maintained a narrow advantage through fractions of :21.73 and :44.72 for a half-mile.

Around the turn Copper Bullet moved up alongside Barry Lee and Mo Diddley and went three wide into the stretch. Ortiz kept the colt engaged down the stretch and the pair drew away from the rest of the field to hit the wire first. The final time was 1:16.45 over the fast main track.

Hollywood Star rallied in the stretch to finish second. Tempestad came in third and Bal Harbour finished fourth. Crea's Bklyn Law, Diamond Oops, Mo Diddley, Barry Lee, and Vino rounded out the order of finish.

"Last time he missed the break, but this time I was in the clear," Ortiz said. "I let him be comfortable and when I asked him, he was there for me. The other horses had a little bit more speed than me, but he's a big horse. He's fast, but I didn't want to go that fast early. I just wanted to stalk and the trip worked out perfectly. When I asked him he responded and did a great job. He finished good and I think he can go farther."

Off as the 7-2 second choice, the winner returned $9.10, $4.50, and $3.60 across the board.

Bred by Dell Ridge Farm out of the winning Unbridled's Song mare Allegory, Copper Bullet was a $200,000 purchase by Winchell Thoroughbreds from the Lane's End consignment to the 2016 Keeneland September yearling sale.

Copper Bullet finished second in his debut in April at Keeneland. He returned the next month at

Churchill Downs and broke his maiden by eight lengths in a dominating, frontrunning score in a five-furlong race.

Copper Bullet now has two wins and two seconds from four starts, with earnings of $177,800. BH

ALTERNATION GETS FIRST WINNER WITH MY HEART AWAKENSBy Nathan Mayberg

Alternation, who earned more than $1 million racing for Donnie Von Hemel and Pin Oak Sta-

ble, was flattered with his first winner when the first-time starter My Heart Awakens took a maiden special weight at Emerald Downs Aug. 13.

Racing for trainer David Martinez and owner Coal Creek Farm, the 2-year-old gelding showed an ability to settle off the pace under jockey Javier Matias, before charging down the stretch with an inside bid to win the fourth race on the card by two lengths. He completed 5 1/2 furlongs on a fast track in a time of 1:04.25.

Sent off at odds of 6-1, My Heart Awakens paid $14.40, $6.40, and $4 across the board.

Out of the winning Value Plus mare My Untamed Heart, My Heart Awakens was bred by his owner in Kentucky. He is a half brother to My Heart Goes On, a 4-year-old stakes-winning filly who races for the same connections.

Alternation, a 9-year-old son of Distorted Humor out of the Seattle Slew mare Alternate, won 9 out of 19 races. His racing career highlights include grade 2 scores in the 2011 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park and the 2012 Oaklawn Handicap.

He stood 2017 at Pin Oak Stud in Kentucky for a $7,500 fee. BH s Share this story

AL WUKAIR UPSETS INNS OF COURT IN JACQUES LE MAROISBy Bob Kieckhefer

Frankie Dettori flew overnight from Chicago to Deauville, then treated fans to his trademark flying

dismount after he rode Al Wukair to a narrow win in a tight three-way finish in the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard-Jacques Le Marois (G1) Aug. 13.

Al Wukair, a 3-year-old Dream Ahead colt, settled in third place early in the one-mile race as Thunder Snow showed the way with Tareef in second.

Approaching the 100-meter mark, Thunder Snow was challenged by both his Godolphin stablemate Inns of Court and Al Wukair, with Al Wukair tightly sandwiched in the middle of his rivals.

The matter was not decided until the final strides with Al Wukair putting a nose in front of Inns of Court to win, as Thunder Snow settled for third, a neck further behind. The top three were trailed by Trais Fluors, who had

nowhere to go a furlong out, Taafeef, and Gold Luck.Al Wukair, carrying the Al Shaqab colors, finished

in 1:38.51 over soft going. It was his second win of the season and followed a third-place showing behind Churchill and Barney Roy in the QIPCO Two Thousand Guineas Stakes (G1) at Newmarket and most recently a second to Taareef in the Prix Messidor (G3) at Maisons-Laffitte.

The Jacques Le Marois is one of Europe's key mile events with past winners including some of the greats of recent racing history—Miesque, Goldikova, Excelebration, Moonlight Cloud, Kingman, and Ribchester are among the previous winners.

Dettori made the quick return flight to Europe after riding Saturday at Arlington International Racecourse, where he finished 10th aboard Mekhtaal in the Arlington Million XXXV Stakes (G1T), ninth on Zipessa in the Beverly D. Stakes (G1T), and third piloting Afandem in the Secretariat Stakes (G1T). BH

O'BRIEN CLAIMS 16TH PHOENIX STAKES WITH SIOUX NATIONBy Bob Kieckhefer

Sioux Nation got first run to the lead in the late going of the Aug. 13 Keeneland Phoenix (G1) at the

Curragh in Ireland and held off the favorite, Beckford, by a half-length length for the victory.

Actress was along for third in the important early test for 2-year-olds, which was won last year by another U.S.-bred, Caravaggio.

Sioux Nation, with jockey Ryan Moore returning from Arlington International Racecourse's International Festival of Racing Aug. 13 to retain the mount for trainer Aidan O'Brien and Coolmore partners, was away a bit slowly in the Phoenix. The Scat Daddy colt closed quickly on the far side of the eight-horse field as stablemate U S Navy Flag made the early going under Donnacha O'Brien.

Sioux Nation hit the lead a furlong out, while Beckford was a bit late to get going on the stands side and was left with too much to do at the end. The Bated Breath colt, a winner in his two previous starts, was gaining but fell a half-length short. The final time was 1:11.72 for the six-furlong test over the good-to-firm turf.

Sioux Nation, bred in Kentucky by Fethard Bloodstock, took three tries to find the winner's enclosure. He broke through

at Cork May 19 and was a well-beaten sixth over yielding turf at the Curragh just eight days later, but returned June 22 to win the group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot over firm going.

O'Brien gave the colt a short breather after that, pointed him toward the Phoenix, and was rewarded with his fourth straight win in the race and 16th overall.

The trainer said he is not yet sure whether to try to tack on a furlong to the Phoenix victory and return Sioux Nation for the Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes (G1) Sept. 10 at the Curragh, which the trainer won last year with Churchill, or to try the Juddmonte Middle Park (G1) at Newmarket Sept. 30 at the same six-furlong distance.

Experienced globetrotter Moore had a better result Sunday than his Chicago trip, where he finished third aboard the favorite, Deauville, in the Arlington Million XXXV Stakes (G1T), eighth on Rain Goddess in the Beverly D. Stakes (G1T), and second in the Secretariat Stakes (G1T) riding Taj Mahal, all of those mounts for O'Brien. BH

ANALYSISDECILE ANALYSIS SHOWS DEPTH AT SARATOGA SELECT SALEBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

The Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearling sale hit for the cycle this year with increases in gross

(16.3%), average (16.3%), and median (26.3%), along with a decrease in the buy-back rate to 19.6% from 23.15% a year ago.

The gross and average were the second-highest totals in the sale's history—$52,995,000 and $339,712, respectively. The $300,000 median set a sale record.

Overall sale metrics can be deceiving. A handful of horses selling for huge prices can more than offset lower purchases in the middle and lower ends of the market. Such was not the case at the 2017 Saratoga select sale.

Segmenting the sale's results into deciles (10% subsections by number sold) revealed no subset of the market lost ground compared with 2016 and only one decile—the highest 10% of the market—was lower compared with 2015.

The $790,313 average price for this year's top decile (range of $1 million-$650,000) was down 5.6% from the top decile average of $837,000 in 2015. A higher number of million-dollar horses sold and a significant difference in the prices paid for them cause the difference.

The top seller two years ago was a $2 million Tapit colt bought by El Capi Racing out of the Four Star Sales consignment. The 2015 sale also sold a Street Cry colt for $1.4 million and another Tapit colt for $1.2 million, who is Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1) winner Tapwrit. Neither of the other two million-dollar horses have started.

This year the two top-selling yearlings brought $1 million each.

The sixth decile for the 2017 sale (yearlings sold for $300,000-$250,000) showed the most growth when compared with both the 2016 and 2015 sales. This decile's average ($279,688) was 27.9% higher than the equivalent decile of 2016 and 23.6% higher

than the same decile of 2015. All deciles for 2017, except the top, showed double-digit percentage increases compared with 2016.

The lowest decile at Saratoga is equivalent to the middle market at Keeneland September, with an average of $95,833 (range of $120,000-$50,000). This decile offered some hope that buyers could be more active in this segment of the market than they have been in the recent past, with its average price 24.6% higher than the equivalent decile of 2016 and up 22.1% compared with 2015.

A look at the average RNA prices for the Saratoga sale showed a steady rise in the expectations of buyers. This year's RNA average of $274,474 was 11.4% higher than 2016 average ($246,489) and 35% higher than the buy-back average of 2015 ($203,269). Because exceptionally high and low RNA prices can skew this average, too, BloodHorse MarketWatch looked at the average price with the highest price and the lowest price removed. This view made the difference between 2017 and 2016 smaller, a change of 8.7%, but the gap with 2015 wider at 45.5%.

The median RNA price of $170,000 for 2017 was actually 8.1% lower than the same average of $185,000 in 2016. This drop coupled with the lower buy-back rate indicates a greater willingness to accept what the market is offering. BH s Share this story
