Church Family,

The year was 1894. A Sunday school teacher, Mrs. D.T. Miles felt she was too limited in her time to teach the

Bible to children, so she began a daily Bible school during the summer. This school lasted four weeks and

enrolled forty students.

That effort to teach the Bible to children was followed up by Ms. Eliza Hawes. She was the director of the

children’s department at Epiphany Baptist Church in New York City, and she started an “Everyday Bible

School” for slum children. She rented the only place that was available—a saloon—to run a Bible school for six

weeks during the summer in 1898. Elizabeth included in her daily Bible school music, Bible Stories, memory

verses, games, crafts, drawing, cooking, and more. Hawes continued her efforts for seven years. By the time she

retired from this kingdom work, she supervised over seven separate schools.

Dr. Robert Boville became aware of the Hawes’ summer program and recommended it to other Baptist churches.

Mr. Boville established a handful of summer schools which were taught by students at the Union Theological

Seminary. During one summer, one thousand students were enrolled in five different schools. In 1923, he began

to promote this event as VBS and founded the World Association of Vacation Bible Schools.

I wrote all of that in order to remind you that Vacation Bible School has a rich and lengthy history and to ask

you to make an investment in our VBS next week. We can always use additional workers, and if you would like

to invest in the lives of children for eternity by volunteering, we have a place for you to serve. Please see or speak

with Angela Hudgins before Sunday evening (903-455-2970) and let her know of your willingness to serve. If

your personal/work schedule does not allow you the time to work in our VBS, then please partner with us

through prayer. The gospel will be shared with our children during VBS, and an invitation will be extended for

them to be saved by grace through faith. Please pray for our family night celebration which takes place on

Thursday evening. We utilize this night to make a ministry “touch” with the families of the children who attend

VBS during the week. Thirdly, please help us follow up with the children and families who attend VBS with

another ministry “touch” through visitation and phone calls. Fourthly, please volunteer to help clean up the

building and grounds after VBS is over Thursday evening and help us get the building ready for church services

Sunday morning.

We welcome Wanda Suggs to the office staff of HTBC. Wanda has been hired to serve as the new office

manager/administrative assistant to the Pastor(s). Wanda is a long time member of HTBC and she has worked in

the Greenville area since 1997. Wanda comes to us from Cytec Engineered Materials of Greenville where she

served as the HR Representative for more than two hundred employees. Among other duties Wanda implemented

employment procedures, wage and salary administration, benefits, employee development, training and

recruitment and a host of other administrative responsibilities. She has also served as the Accounts Payable

Administrator and Cost Reduction Analyst with The Henry Group. In a previous employment with Raytheon

Systems Wanda was responsible for the day-to-day administrative needs for the manager. As our new Office

Manager I know you will want to show your appreciation to her and for her.

Young at Heart 55 Plus SUPER SUMMER SPECTACULAR

Be sure and mark your calendar for July 10th as we

will be going to Webb Hill and have breakfast with

Bro. Bobby. This will be a special time with songs, a

devotional and of course good food. We will leave

from West Atrium at 8:00 am and return approx.

11:00 am. We will have our breakfast prepared by

Shirley & Co., and you will enjoy it! The cost will be

$5.00 and pay when you sign up so we can have

enough transportation & FOOD planned ahead. You

must pay when you sign up to have a reservation.

The first of July we will be signing up for the

Mayberry-Ridgecrest trip to Ridgecrest, NC,

September 24 – 29th. Signing up early provides you

an opportunity to pay the trip fee in stages—easy on

your wallet!!

If you are not working in Vacation Bible School, be

sure to see Angela or call the church office

(903-455-2970) and get involved today. Next week,

there will be hundreds of children taking their place

as the workers and teachers share Jesus with them.

VBS is a special time as many of you asked Jesus to

come into your hearts and save you during a time like

this. VBS is where I first met Jesus. He saved me

because He loved me and was willing to die for my

sins. Now today, He is alive at the right hand of our

Heavenly Father praying for us.

I am glad that our church not only participates in Vacation Bible School, but goes all out. I applaud Angela and her children’s ministry team for the incredible job they do each year. And for all of our staff and lay leaders who give of their time and great talents and make this a “total church” experience.

By the way, I notice that when God called out to Samuel, it was not a general call for just anyone. He called him by name, “Samuel, Samuel.” It was an individual, and personalized invitation. I also notice that he did not stop after the first time. He called out to him again and again. I wonder who our Savior is calling out to right now. I wonder who will have the privilege of being there to help them discern God’s voice during VBS.

Vacation Bible School… A Place to Hear God’s Voice

I love the story of little Samuel. He went to the tabernacle in Shiloh at a very early age. He was probably just a Pre-K when he went to live there. His parents dedicated him to the Lord, prayed for him daily and visited as often as they could. He learned all about the tabernacle and the Law of Moses and sat at the feet of Eli the High Priest. Even though Eli had his shortcomings, he must have known the Scripture and the Lord and taught little Samuel what he knew.

One quiet night a very strange thing happened. It was after the sun had set, and the lamp had not yet gone out for the night. Eli was in his room and Samuel was lying down for the night in the Tabernacle when a voice called out Samuel’s name. He jumped up and ran to Eli, but he told him he had not called for him. This happened three times in a row and the Bible tells us, “Then Eli discerned that the LORD was calling the boy. 9And Eli said to Samuel, “Go lie down, and it shall be if He calls you, that you shall say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10Then the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3).

What a beautiful thing it is to hear God’s voice. What a wonderful thing to be able to help someone else discern God’s voice calling them. What a privilege that Eli had to guide young Samuel to hear the voice of God and respond appropriately to Him. God spoke to little Samuel and then raised him up to be the spiritual leader of the nation who anointed 2 kings of Israel. What a wonderful privilege we have as a church to provide an environment and atmosphere for God to speak to little “Samuel’s” today. We have the privilege of teaching them God’s precious Word and giving them the truth in a world where they are confronted with so many lies. We have the privilege of being near when God speaks and helping to discern God’s voice when He speaks. We have the privilege of teaching them how to respond appropriately when God speaks to them. God is moving in our students and I hope that excites

you… it should! Last week I asked for you to be in prayer

for our togetherness and unity… your prayers are

definitely working! Keep praying for us that God will

continue to reveal Himself to them and that they will be

open and responsive to the Holy Spirit. May the Lord

HTBC STUDENT REVOLUTION Thank you all so much for praying for our 3DT event from

last week! It was truly a remarkable week for many

reasons, and I believe the impact of it will be felt for quite

some time. If you are a widow that didn’t get a visit from

us, please understand that you were still prayed for by

name by numerous students and adults. We made a ton of

cookies (thanks to Kimberly Carpenter, Mandy McKamie,

Kelli Davies, and Leonette Davies) to distribute. We

mowed a handful of yards, changed light bulbs, moved

furniture, weeded gardens, planted flowers, sang songs,

had incredibly deep conversations sprinkled with smiles

and laughter, and even threw a huge surprise birthday

party… and that was just in the daytime!

Each night we were so blessed, encouraged, and

challenged by the messages delivered to us by Steven

Carroll and his family as they led us in worship. We all

received the Word and are trying to apply it to our lives.

We even had opportunity to minister to his family in a very

tangible way and were able to bless the soul of his nine

year-old daughter, Megan.

What we (as a group… and individually) probably learned

the most is that God’s ways are not our ways… they are

bigger and better… his thoughts are not our thoughts…

they are higher (Isaiah 55:8-9)! We had lots of plans for

the week that kept falling through, but the plans of men

pale in comparison to the plans of God, and we got to

experience some truly amazing God moments throughout

the week. Do you think that those kinds of things might

impact our students? One commented on Facebook that it

had been the greatest week of her life… and you, if you

supported it in any way, were a huge part of that.

We then followed our three-day event with our carwash

fundraiser and in spite of some awfully tired students and

adults, we washed a whopping 101 cars! Praise God! If

you weren’t asked to pledge money and would still like to

give towards our camp, I know of some students that could

probably use a little financial help… just call the church

office and let someone know.
