Editor’s noteGetting married was never high on my list

of to-dos throughout life, just like former Ash-burton woman Rachel McGregor. But if it was

on my bucket list, I couldn’t think of a more fantastic way to propose than Rachel did high

on the skifields of Aspen in Colarado.Randomly stopping halfway down a moun-

tain while she was snowboarding, Rachel fronted up with a lovely proposal, including

love, forevers and a marcasite ring. When Rachel and Byron Kelsall wed, they will be doing it with the bonus of a $3400

wedding package won through the Ashbur-ton Guardian’s YOU Magazine and courtesy of LaVita E Bella beauty and JD Smit Productions

videography. It’s a fantastic prize that will go a long way

towards the happy couple’s wedding.YOU magazine staff wish the couple all the

best for their wedding and the future! Here’s hoping as the autumn chill kicks in

you are all keeping warm and healthy. Enjoy this month’s YOU!

CLOTHING DESIGNER’S JOB

is a plusAs a plus-size woman, Sarah Naylor knows how hard clothes shopping can be.

Things don’t fit right or just don’t look the same on you as they do on the store mannequin.

Sarah’s been lucky though. She’s got a creative flair and a love for designing which has allowed her to make many of her own clothes over the years.

It’s something she loves to do, and now others are benefiting from her creativity.

Sarah has started Farmhouse Boutique – a small business with her as the sole employee. She’s the boss, the worker and the accountant. She designs the clothes, makes the pattern, sources the fabric and does the sewing.

And she does it all from the comfort of a small farm cottage she shares with her husband Ben, on his family’s farm in Becks, Central Otago.

The couple – who got married in January – moved there just a couple of months ago following a year of travelling and working around Australia.

Becks is half an hour’s drive from Alex-andra and for Sarah – who studied fash-

ion design at CPIT and went on to work in retail and management at Pumpkin Patch and Country Road – employment op-portunities were limited. So the time was right to start her own brand.

She wants to keep it small. So far she has launched a Facebook page and is taking her products to shows, fairs and fetes. Last weekend she was at the Mayfield A&P Show and today she’ll set up a stall at the 100th anniversary Methven A&P Show – back in her home town where it all started.

Sarah’s love for making clothes was dis-covered while at Mount Hutt College. Her teacher – Mrs Paul – let them do fashion after much begging and some of the stu-dents went on to make their ball dresses.

“From there I just made a lot of my own clothes and a few bits and pieces for other people, and a wedding dress for a friend,” Sarah said.

The bulk of what she makes is aimed at the rural women market, but she also loves the formal side of fashion. She made her own bridesmaid dresses and has more lined up for the future.

Former Methven woman Sarah Naylor has recently launched Farmhouse Boutique – a business she runs from home designing and making clothes for plus-sized women like herself. Erin Tasker reports.

Farmhouse Boutique’s Sarah Naylor is putting her own take on the fashion scene for bigger women by designing, making and selling her own clothes at A&P shows and markets. Most of what she makes is aimed at rural women and she does it all from the comfort of a small farm cottage in Central Otago.

Initially she wanted to do kids’ clothes, but that was a market which she knew would be hard to compete in.

Fashion design isn’t easy in a day and age where things can be purchased eas-ily – and often cheaply – off the internet from both New Zealand and overseas.

But Sarah says her point of difference is the personal touch and providing a prod-uct that’s unique.

Her main focus is clothes in the size 14 to 22 range.

“Being plus size myself I really recog-nised there’s a huge gap (in the market); there’s only a few places commercially that are doing it,” she said.

She uses natural materials and wants to be different from everything else that’s out there. But you’re not going to see anything too crazy come off her sewing machine.

“If I’m not going to wear it, I’m not going

to make it,” she said.“I want to aim for rural women who

don’t get a chance to get to main cities to go shopping.”

She loves colour and prints.“Everything at the moment I’ve got is

prints and quite a bit of colour.“I find colours can be a mood changer

as well.”Sarah’s creativity isn’t limited just to

clothes making. She also does some art and jewellery making.

She credits much of her creative flair to her late grandmother.

She had a dressmaking business and did a lot of formal wear. Back in those days it was all handmade and took a lot of delicate work.

She passed on many of her skills to Sarah and her family, and Sarah said her family – particularly her granddad – was proud.

Former Ashburton woman Rachel Mc-Gregor is a woman who knows what she wants.

For years she brushed off the idea of mar-riage and settling down ... until she met Byron Kelsall.

Three weeks ago, at age 31, Rachel pro-posed to Byron, 33, high in the American mountains doing what they both loved ... snowboarding. It was unconventional but perfect.

She kept the proposal simple and pure.“I just said how much I loved him, how I

wanted to be with him forever and would he marry me.”

It was totally unexpected. He had a “weird look”, checked Rachel

was serious before he said yes.“Travelling together is a great relationship

test.“Although Byron and I have had some

trying times over here, it has definitely brought us closer together.”

They were introduced through a mutual friend in Christchurch more than five years ago.

At the time Rachel worked in the city and Byron lived in Cromwell.

Their first date was in SOL Square in Christchurch, followed by a drive around the Port Hills.

It was 2008.Six months later Byron had moved to

Christchurch. And a year later they were living together.Since that first date, Rachel and Byron’s

relationship has grown; to the point it just feels right.

After living together for four years in Christchurch, it was time to do some exten-sive travelling.

They are midway through a one-year overseas trip and are due home in a few months.

“We decided to take a year out and travel around North America and work in Vancouver, British Columbia, in Canada,” Rachel said.

In February, they took a month off from

Rachel McGregor unconventionally asked her partner for his hand in marriage surrounded by snow on a mountain in Aspen, Colorado. Her unexpected proposal was accepted and less than a month later she is the winner of the Ashburton Guardian’s $3400 wedding package giveaway, courtesy of LaVita e Bella beauty and JD Smit Productions videography.

their holiday jobs and hit the mountain ranges snowboarding around California, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming.

They drove 8850km getting around the mountain resorts.

Rachel had being thinking about propos-ing a few months before they took the trip.

She denies being a romantic, but had planned when she would propose, with a degree of improvisation.

“I wouldn’t say it was well planned as I am definitely not a romantic, but I had planned the timing and was going to wing the rest.

“Little did Byron know, but I planned to propose to him at Aspen in Colorado, but I needed to get him alone.”

She waited until halfway down a run, pulled up behind him and made him wait

while she retrieved something she needed. “I took off my glove and got a marcasite ring out of my pocket.”

Byron had given her the ring years earlier, and as they were travelling on a tight bud-get, there was no extra money for buying something else.

“The marcasite ring is lovely and has a special significance, so I thought it would be appropriate.”

Byron was momentarily puzzled at the turn of events but, for Rachel, there was no doubt he would say yes.

“I don’t take marriage lightly and it wasn’t until recently that I had even thought I would ever get married.

“I had spent years convincing Byron that marriage wasn’t that important to me as I

didn’t want to be rushed.“So after all that stalling, I decided if it

was going to happen I would have to be the one to make it happen.”

Midway down their mountain run, and after a moment of confusion, Byron accepted Rachel’s totally unexpected proposal.

Rachel had chosen Aspen because of their joint love of snowboarding.

One of their follow-up dates was to Cardrona, in central Otago, and their first trip overseas as a couple was boarding in Colorado, in the United States.

They were also able to celebrate with family and friends as they continued travel-ling and finished their travels.

“We were staying with my step-sisters in

Denver that night, so I thought it would be great to celebrate with them.

“Byron and I have a lot of friends in Canada as well, so I wanted to celebrate with them before we headed back to New Zealand.”

Friends at the base of the hill did not believe Rachel had proposed.

But proof was in the pudding with the moment caught on the sports camera, mounted on Byron’s snowboard helmet.

As their travels continue, Rachel and By-ron are still coming to terms with their new relationship status ... engaged.

They have no idea when they will set the date, but once they finish travelling they plan to start saving again, this time for a wedding.

BE THE BRIDE YOU

Every bride wants that once-in-a-lifetime dress, finding it may take you on a search of many different options, whether you buy, hire, make, borrow, inherit or have it designed.

Sometimes the gown a bride has always imagined wearing is not the one she eventually chooses.

It’s a wise bride who goes looking with an open mind to find the style and shade that suits her to perfection.Designed

Having a gown designed and made just for you is the ultimate in individuality, but naturally it will cost you more than a ready-made dress.

Your designer will want to discuss prospective ideas and styles with you, as well as what suits you and your personality.

Bringing an illustration, a piece of lace or item of jewellery is helpful for inspiration.

The designer will have access to a range of fabrics and trimmings to create the

dress you have chosen. While white is the obvious choice for

bridal gowns, ivory, parchment, magnolia, silver, champagne, gold or blush can be more flattering on some brides.Bought

Beautiful wedding dresses are available “off the peg” at specialist bridal shops. As well as New Zealand designs, many are imported, so be sure to allow adequate time for the dress you select to be ordered from overseas. With a wonderful range of styles to try before you buy, your dream dress might be right there on the rack!

Once chosen your gown can be expertly fitted and altered if necessary. Bridal shops have an impressive selection of accessories and attendants’ dresses to complement your gown.Made

Choose a pattern and some stunning bridal fabric and let a skilled dressmaker create an exquisite gown for you. With an inspiring selection of silk, satin, lace,

brocade and voile, there won’t be another gown exactly like yours, and it won’t be as costly as a designer dress either. Be sure to choose a reputable dressmaker and always ask to see examples of their work before you decide.Hired

Hiring a wedding gown often lets you have that dream dress for less than purchasing it or having it made. Unless you plan to keep your gown as an heirloom, hiring can be an excellent option for the budget conscious bride. As well as dedicated wedding hire shops, theatrical costume hire can sometimes provide you with a period gown for a themed wedding, or at least the inspiration for one.Borrowed

There may be a vintage or heirloom gown belonging to family and friends that you could wear. Borrowed or inherited, such gowns provide special magic on your wedding day and are becoming very sought after. Care must be taken when

handling a vintage dress as the fabric becomes fragile with age and requires expert cleaning and storage.Found

Expensive and exquisite dresses are often to be found in the for sale columns, or on Trademe. Many have been purchased or imported from overseas and you may discover a genuine designer bridal gown at a fraction of the original cost. You can always have it refitted or altered with beading, add a sparkly belt or trim to your personal taste.Other alternatives

Your wedding gown need not be traditional bridal style, colour or price. Look at ball gowns, cocktail outfits and maxi dresses.

Try summer sales at designer boutiques as well as chain store racks and mail order companies. With style and imagination, a simple dress can always be beautifully and uniquely enhanced with classy accessories.

Stress is a huge part of our everyday lives and it is how well we manage that stress on a daily basis that determines becoming completely overwhelmed. You get to a place where you can’t see the wood for the trees. Balance is the key for putting our lives in perspective, so that we have time to stop and smell the roses.

Feeling the pressure of life smothering us can be a cause of a variety of acute and chronic diseases. Feeling frustrated on where to start, and reaching for the coffee/tea or quick fix sugar options, only stresses us more in the process.

Trying to keep a balance in life is really impor-tant, so that you don’t feel as though there is nothing else in your life other than work, and that work is your life. Society today demands so much more from us than previous times.

Consumerism and shopping on credit wasn’t part of our grandparents’ lives and they seemed a lot happier with a lot less.

People were happy to wait for things to be done, instead of wanting it all done by tomor-row, adding to the pressure of life today in the way we live it as well is the influence technol-

ogy has had on speeding up our lives.Stress management is really important to

avoid people breaking down, feeling over-whelmed and getting sick.

If you have some weak genes in the family, they can then be triggered, like a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. Then the realisation kicks in that life in the fast lane is not so ben-eficial to our physical and mental health.

Look at your life as a pie, then segment it, into how you see your life now, and how you would like to perceive your life to be for the better, and how that would help you feel bet-ter as a person.

Look at the things you love to do and see, that you don’t have time for at the moment

and see how you can add those things back into your life and still maintain a balance.

Then see how much better you feel in return and how that then overflows into everything else; like the ripple effect, when a stone is thrown into a pond.

Dealing with stress isn’t necessarily about taking medicines, it is often about creating more time in life to bring back balance.

What is it that you love to do, but don’t seem to do anymore? Is it an hour of reading before bed at night, a chance to slip into another world for a period of time to let the brain re-focus on something else? Is it spending a few more weekends away from home exploring our beautiful countryside; is it spending more time with family and friends, catching up to have a hot cuppa or a cold beer/glass of wine.

Doing those creative things at night, that you are always planning to do, rather than watch-ing something on television that you aren’t generally engaging in anyway. Do you like ac-tive de-stressing? Like going for regular walks out in nature, looking at a different scene other than the one you usually look at.

These are just a few ideas of ways you could

bring balance back into your life, so that the pie of life isn’t just focused on one main thing, leaving you frustrated and stressed with not having enough time for the fun things that you once enjoyed.

Of course there are herbs and nutrients that you could be taking to help you combat those extreme feelings of stress, but sometimes looking at the basics can really go a long way.

Being able to see the wood for the trees isn’t such an overwhelming feeling after all and let-ting the light shine through, because you are now doing more things you enjoy; like turning the stereo up in the car and singing along to your favourite tunes.

Taking some time out to sit back on a random park bench and see how your life is played out on a daily basis and where making a few changes can benefit you in putting some fun things back into your life, hence feeling less stressed and more relaxed, and therefore wanting to laugh and smile more for 2014.

With the compliments of Jane Logie, amedicinal herbalist, clinical nutritionist

As we age our skin mostly refl ects our life – weather exposure, our lifestyle, diet, smoking, stress,

geneti c predispositi on. As with most things – preventi on is best. Good diet, enough good sleep, exercise, using sun block, protecti ng your skin from the extremes of heat and cold, not too much alcohol, not smoking - all of these will lessen the eff ects of aging on the skin.

We all want to look our best, nowadays there are many opportuniti es for us to maintain a healthy skin at home, at beauty clinics and with appearance medicine. Having a plan and a skin care regime that is designed for you by a professional skin therapist is a good place to start. What can you do at home?:

Cleanse, moisturise, treat and protect. 5-10 minutes per day.

• Cleanse your skin with a cleanser (not soap)

• Use a moisturiser and sunscreen daily

• Use a sti mulant acti ve product regularly. Products that contain Glycolic acid, Vitamin C or Vitamin A all increase cell turnover, unplugging blocked pores, shedding the outer damaged layer of skin. Glycolic has the smallest molecule and can penetrate into the dermis creati ng a healthier and thicker skin.

• C15 serum can be used at home with a hand held ultrasonic device, this is easy to use and improves the quality and look of the skin

• Wear sun block daily – minimum SPF 15+, wear protecti ve clothing in the extremes of heat and cold.

What can your Beauty Therapist / Skin Therapist do?:

Consultati on and individualised planning with products and treatments will give you the best results.

Some of the treatments that help with aging skin and soft ening wrinkles and fi ne lines include,

• Microdermabrasion – treatment works by gently abrading debris off skin and sucti on to remove debris and sti mulate blood fl ow and

drainage. The skin plumps up, looks fresher and healthier.

• Vitamin C infusions with sonophoresis - Sonophoresis works by cavitati on, gently shaking the skin cells and infusing the acti ve Vitamin C product into the skin. The result is fresher and plumper skin.

• Skin Peels such as Glycolic Peels.• Dermal rolling or Dermapen

treatments, can be used with or without product such as C15 serum. These treatments are more intense than home treatments.

What Appearance Medicine and Aestheti c treatments can do:

• Lasers and IPL (Intense Pulse light) can be used to target parti cular areas of the skin that need improving or treati ng. Skin rejuvenati on with light treatments is eff ecti ve, light treatments can be used for improving skin quality, fading pigmentati on, treati ng superfi cial facial or leg veins and ti ghtening skin. These treatments are usually recommended as a course and some laser treatments

such as Fraxel laser sees the improvement conti nue over ti me.

• The new Vivace RF (radiofrequency) technology is specifi cally designed for skin that has criss cross wrinkling. The Vivace RF works on the deeper layers in the skin for volumising and sti mulati ng the skin.

• Cosmeti c Injectables are also available for soft ening lines, creati ng volume, smoothing foreheads and crows feet. Some of the best treatments take away the negati ve look of a scowling frown or a down turned mouth. These treatments are easy and eff ecti ve and mostly aff ordable. They take very litt le ti me, are discreet and create the eff ect of making you look your best without looking cosmeti cally enhanced.

Transform Clinic has experienced and professional practi ti oners that will give you expert advice and recommendati ons for home and clinic treatments. Off ering you the best soluti ons to suit your needs and your budget.

Now I know that I often give teenragers a bit of a hard time in this column and will probably continue to do so on many such occasions.

And I may have mentioned before that I use Nigel Latta’s quote that “teenagers are not right in the head” as a chant when I’m about to lose the plot with the once-were-angels.

Having said that, I look around at my children’s friends and they actually give me hope.

My male teenrager managed to rope me into two trips to Lake Hood on Saturday. They had been at the Ashburton Paintball Park clearing some of the greenery away for the owner in exchange for some free time on one of the courses, so they could go ballistic with some air-soft guns.

And then later that afternoon they were allowed some time to shoot each other.

Now, normally, I would have a couple of issues with this, but they’d earned some fun (I hope) and I was happy to take the four lads out to do something that didn’t involve A) wifi or B) a screen.

A couple of them trooped into my wee lounge, and I saw what good kids they

were. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t tell any-one for sure they don’t get up to no-good, I can only go on what I saw and felt.

One of them came in with a leather World War One greatcoat on and po-litely proceeded to tell me the history of his jacket and the other made me smile the minute I looked at him – cheek was written all over his face and in no time at all he was calling me “Muma Fenwick”. What would they have called him in the old days? Oh yeah, that’s right, a lovable rogue.

They were hyped up – rowdy and chatty – but not one of them was disrespecful, and not once did one of them grunt at me. Seriously, it was a grunt-free trip. I even had an argument about Vladimir Putin with one of them. I picked them up again

when it was getting dark, and apart from stinking my already stinky car out, I picked up four pre-men who’d spent an energetic day and had a ball.

My female teen has been a lot more so-cial over the years and I know most of her friends so well. I love them all, they are all gorgeous girls ... but hey, they haven’t hit 16 yet, so I don’t want to speak too soon.

I blame them for my girl-teen being a fairly well-adjusted, secure and mostly-happy rager.

So many times I hear people bemoaning “awful teenagers” and trust me, I don’t think they are a trouble-free walk in the park. But I love their growing indepen-dence, their individuality and most of all, I don’t see too many horrid teens in Ashvegas.

It’s really easy to take aim at teenagers, they are so often anti-social, smelly and generally foul. But, I’m not a policeman, so I don’t get to see many truly troubled teens, so if I look at most things consid-ered, I really do have some hope for our next crop of adults (if they ever learn not to be such Z generationers).

My son this week had his school jersey

stolen from his classroom (that or it’s just lost). I found out this morning (Wednes-day). To say my blood was boiling and things got septic in my household is an understatement.

Whether lost or stolen, boy teenrager is 16 years old now. I’m not paying for an-other one, so the consequence of some-one else’s actions or his own forgetfulness is that he might learn about how cold Mid Canterbury can really get.

Now before anyone at CYFS rings me, he has a big warm puffer jacket he can use. It is now his responsibility to keep himself warm ... how else can I teach him that ev-ery act of forgetfulness, or someone else’s vile, stealing actions have consequences.

And that while I love working hard to pay for every little thing my children may want or desperately need, they are now head-ing for adult-land.

Gearing up for the big bad world is something they need to start thinking about now. It’s no use sending them out with a mummy-packed lunchbox and nicely mummy-ironed shirts.

Teach them how to survive well without us, it’s our job and our duty.

RELISH A LITTLE BIT OF

Yes, I was right last month (I’m female so that stands to reason). Apart from a random hot day here and there, autumn has definitely arrived. So it’s time to revamp the plan for the vegetable garden, albeit it is still produc-ing some real delights.

So, with Red Band gumboots at the

ready my intentions were ruthless until my eye caught the striking colours of some stunning sweet peppers hanging like jewels amongst the sea of green ones still waiting their turn.

These sweet peppers are so easy to grow and if put in a nice warm spot early in the growing season, will yield a very

hefty crop of jewels. My favourite thing to do with these

beauties is a sweet pepper chutney that can be enjoyed all year round.

This chutney is great with any cold meats and never goes astray with a good punchy New Zealand cheese.

Enjoy!

Sweet pepper chutney 6 large sweet peppers 1 1/2 onions 3/4 C apple cider vinegar 3/4 C sugar 1/2 T salt 1/2 T mustard seeds 1/2 T celery seeds 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 hot chilli peppers

(optional)

– Wash, core and deseed peppers. In a food pro-cessor whizz the pep-pers, onions and chillis until slightly chunky.

– In a heavy based saucepan combine the vegetables and remain-ing ingredients. Mix well. Bring to the boil over a medium heat, stirring occasionally. Boil for 25-30 minutes or until thickened. Stir while boiling to prevent mixture from sticking to the bottom.

– Pour into hot sterilised jars.

5 large lemons, cut into small pieces, pips discarded

2 medium onions, peeled and chopped 1T salt 3 cooking apples, peeled and chopped 600ml malt vinegar 1t each cinnamon and ground ginger 150g raisins 425g brown sugar

– Place the lemons and onions in a non-metal bowl, sprinkle with salt and leave overnight.

– Combine all the ingredients except sugar in a large, heavy-based pan, bring to a low boil and simmer for approxi-mately 45 minutes. If necessary, boil a little longer until the lemon is tender.

– Stir in the sugar and cook for a further 15-20 mins more, stirring frequently to prevent it from sticking to the bottom.

– Pour into hot sterilised jars and cover when cool.

And while we are on the subject of harvest-ing the autumn bounty, this fabulous lemon raisin relish is another way to lift a nice cheese or, even better, served with an unc-tuous curry. I served it in my restaurant in Kaikoura with a cheese board, I just love it.

– Put raisins in a small bowl, put enough Verjus just to cover, set aside over night.

– Lightly toast vanilla seeds and pod, cloves, cardamom pods and cinnamon stick broken in half. Just a couple of seconds until fragrant.

– Combine with coconut milk, sugar, milk and cream. Boil.

– Remove the Vanilla bean pod, cardamom pod and cinnamon stick.

– Strain through a sieve, and then return to heat

– Pour in rice, bring to a gentle simmer for 3-5 minutes.

– Add raisins-drain the Verjus as it may split the mascarpone.– In a separate bowl whisk the egg

yolks. Add the mascarpone and whisk until smooth.

– Turn off the rice. Add the yolks and mascarpone into the rice. Stir until thickened.– Put into the oven at 200 C for 15 minutes to finish cooking the rice.

– Serve hot or cold with runny cream or ice cream.

SLEEPING BEAUTY NO LONGER A

fairy talePeople often joke about needing beauty sleep but researchers in Swe-den have provided scientific evidence that we really do.

People kept awake for 31 hours de-veloped droopy, swollen eyelids, blood-shot eyes and dark circles under their eyes, according to the researchers.

Forty observers compared photo-graphs of 10 people before and after sleep deprivation.

“We confirmed that sleep-deprived people are perceived as more fatigued, less attractive, sadder and less healthy than when they are rested, confirming the colloquial notion of beauty sleep,” the researchers wrote in their paper, published in the journal Sleep.

The sleep-deprived also appeared to have more facial wrinkles, a con-sequence of poor sleep unverified by science until now - at least in humans.

Rats deprived of sleep quickly de-velop nasty skin lesions on their paws and tails.

“It is well known that when you sleep

the blood flow to your skin increases dramatically,” says Tina Sundelin of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, who led the research team.

The 10 sleep-deprived subjects said they felt mentally fatigued and devel-oped a droopy mouth that the observ-ers thought indicated sadness.

“Sleep loss is indeed related to a negative mood,” Sundelin said.

“We also seem to be more emotional in general when we don’t get enough sleep.”

The research provides strong support for the folk wisdom that good sleep improves facial appearance.

In fact, a 2010 paper in the British Medical Journal co-authored by Sun-delin actually carried the title Beauty Sleep: Experimental Study on the Perceived Health and Attractiveness of Sleep-Deprived People.

That study, like the recent study in Sleep, also concluded that sleep-deprived people look less attractive and less healthy than they do when

well-rested.This has implications for interpersonal

interactions, according to researchers. “Since faces contain a lot of informa-tion on which humans base their interactions with each other, how fatigued a person appears may affect how others behave toward them,” Sundelin said.

The findings also suggest the appear-ance of fatigue is something people are willing to pay handsomely to avoid.

“The desire to look less fatigued is one of the primary motivators for undergoing cosmetic surgery,” the authors of the Sleep study point out.

But it’s not all about vanity, according to Sundelin. Sleep may affect health as well, which she and her colleagues hope to demonstrate next.

“There are studies out there on how stress, disease and physical or mental exertion affect health, but a lack of studies specifically looking at how facial cues of fatigue relate to health,” she said. – AAP

dark-haired man whom I would have a relationship with,” Sarndra said.

When the couple moved in together, Sarndra had four of her seven children living at home, and Dave also had two children of his own, who lived with their mother.

They were married in 2005 and now have 14 grandchildren.

While living in the Waikato, Sarndra completed a beautician’s course with Wintec in Hamilton, and opened her own clinic. Dave is a dairy farmer, and Sarndra enjoyed the balance of making people feel and look great, as well as working on the farm.

The couple had dreamed of moving south, to discover the place they would call home. In 2007 they moved to a peaceful valley in Mariua, where they continued farming.

For their two sons who lived with them it was a new adventure, and during that time six of their nine children moved south also. With the isolation and tranquility of the valley, Sarndra found it to be spiritually awakening, and decided she had reached a time in her life where she wanted to use her abilities to reach out to more people.

The couple moved into the Southbridge District, where Sarndra looked further into harnessing her spiritual abilities to help others. She assisted with her daughter’s pregnancies and deliveries.

She felt overwhelming love during these experiences, and considered becoming a midwife. This is when she discovered ThetaHealing™, and it completely changed her life.

“Within a short time of studying ThetaHealing™, everything started to fall into place. I had experienced so many feelings and had learnt a lot about myself during my years of self-discovery, but all of a sudden it was like all the dots had connected and has helped enhance my abilities so I can have access to the higher realms with more definition,” Sarndra said.

The study of ThetaHealing™ is complex, as it encompasses learning how to read the mind, body and spirit, which is why

Sarndra travelled overseas to gain her qualifications to allow her to teach the art.

To participate in a session, you will need to bring an open mind and willingness or intention. Sarndra will utilise the ThetaHealing™ technique to make changes and bring a positive outcome, or if you would prefer to learn the ThetaHealing™ technique, you can attend one of her many courses.

Sarndra has assisted many clients in the discovery of relaxation and self-fulfilment, and has also successfully utilised ThetaHealing™ to assist in medical matters.

“A woman I treated had three young children, under five years old. Her first born son, she hadn’t felt a connection with, there wasn’t the feeling of a loving bond a mother would normally have with her child. It was the opposite with her second child, they were very close and adored each other.

“Eight weeks after her third child arrived, she again felt no bond and feared the relationship would be similar to the one she had with her first child.

“Looking deeper into her emotions, we discovered a range of negative feelings and emotions associated with her first birth, including towards those who were with her during the birth.

“We removed the shock and trauma associated with negative events surrounding the birth of her first child. It was a session which encompassed a large variety of beliefs, emotions, hormonal stress, guilt and depression.

“She noticed a positive change immediately during the session, and has continued to see improvements with the relationships of her first born child and her new baby.

It took ThetaHealing™ to uncover the true emotions which lay beneath the surface, and allowed her to understand more of herself, and see the situation from a deeper level,” Sarndra said.

Sarndra cherishes her moments as a mother and grandmother, and enjoys planning family gatherings full of fun activities, to fill her family members lives with fond memories.

The couple are actively involved with their family’s sporting activities.

They also purchased property in Geraldine, and plan on renovating the home for their retirement, when they are finished sharemilking.

Her philosophy in life is simple.“Always be true to yourself, follow your

heart and step out of your comfort zone to expand your horizons.”

THE POWER OF BEING

by Amanda Wright

In our dreams, we are truly great. We run faster, jump higher and explore realms of the universe we never even

knew existed. But this fantasy doesn’t need to be restricted only to our dreams. The greatest and most influential people to ever have graced this planet, are those who dared to dream big and who dared to believe in their dreams. Through positive thinking and self-belief, they didn’t dream their life, they lived their dreams.

No doubt you’ve heard of the terms alpha, beta, theta, delta and gamma. These letters from the Greek alphabet represent more than a cheesy American sorority, they are the names given to the five brain wave frequencies which make up our state of mind.

It is our state of mind which controls our reality, through our thoughts, beliefs and mindset. Understanding the frequency which we operate from, and mastering the ability to open deeper

states of consciousness, can open the subconscious mind, allowing you to create your own reality. In basic terms, if you can imagine it, you can become it.

The theta brain waves are present during meditation and light sleep, when you experience the famed REM dream state. It is during this state, where visualisation, creativity and insight are most powerful, allowing the dreamer to project their inner-most desires into reality.

However it’s not as simple as closing your eyes and wishing. During the day, we operate on beta brain waves, those associated with alertness, logic, reason and function. Without them we wouldn’t function effectively, however they also translate into stress and anxiety.

The key to success is in removing the stress and negativity, to allow the body and mind to completely relax, promoting the alpha and theta brain waves to heighten our sense of purpose.

These revelations have led to the discovery of ThetaHealing™, a meditative technique which can empower the

subconscious mind, eliminating fears of failure and self-doubt.

The positive thoughts associated with ThetaHealing™ manifest themselves into reality, resulting in a potential for health, wealth and happiness.

Sarndra Fowler is a practitioner and teacher of ThetaHealing™, helping her clients to discover their inner strength, overcome fears to create success, and to harness physical health and wellbeing.

Born in Napier to a Cook Island mother, Sarndra was adopted as a baby into a New Zealand family of four. She has a lot of love and respect for her parents.

As a child, Sarndra knew she was different from other children, and experienced visions and insights of a spiritual nature from a young age. This gave her a yearning to learn and experience more of the spiritual realm, which led to a journey of self-discovery through life experience and attending a number of spiritual development workshops.

From a young age Sarndra always desired a large family of her own and

was blessed with seven. Her spiritual abilities made each pregnancy a unique experience.

“As the pregnancies progressed, my intuition heightened. My most spectacular experience was an appearance of an angelic figure holding a wrapped bundle. My son was soon to be conceived. When I was pregnant with my fifth, I was in a carpark when a little spirit began skipping around me, telling me her name was Camille, and so it was,” Sarndra said.

While her children were young, Sarndra developed excellent time management, and used her spare time making crafts, including leadlight and pottery. Before her youngest child, Ryland, started school, Sarndra worked a short time as a teacher aide, and became involved with school boards. During these years she also enjoyed being involved with a variety of her children’s sports. It was during this time, she met the love of her life, Dave.

“When Dave and I met it was instant recognition. I had already experienced premonition dreams, of a mysterious

dark-haired man whom I would have a relationship with,” Sarndra said.

Susan Lewis is the internati onally bestselling author of more than 30 novels including No Child of Mine,

Don’t Let me Go and The Truth About You. I have been reading her books for many years and get excited when a new one is released.

This story is set around Josie Clark and her husband Jeff . They are struggling to make ends meet aft er spending all their savings trying to save their son Ryan going to jail for a crime he didn’t commit.

When Josie receives terrible news the Clarks’ lives will never be the same. Josie’s joy is her two children, but with Ryan in jail and her daughter marrying far too young the news she receives makes her worry about their futures even more.

Across town, in a gorgeous house by the sea lives Bel Monkton. She lives in luxury but has struggles of her own. Since the death of her twin sister from cancer over a year ago she has been unable to rebuild her shatt ered world.

When circumstances bring these two women together a beauti ful friendship

is formed. It is a friendship built out of the worst circumstances but one that blossoms and helps these two women in ways they could never imagine.

Like all Susan Lewis novels Never Say Goodbye is brilliantly writt en with well-structured characters you end up feeling like you know personally.

She puts a lot of research into what she writes about and this is obvious throughout the book. Described as “utt erly compelling”, “deeply moving” and “spellbinding” Never Say Goodbye will tear at your heart strings.

We’ve all seen ‘those’ photos, and commented, “Surely that has been photo-shopped”, and

“Clearly she’s had plastic surgery”.The ones that grace the glossy covers

of women’s magazines, showing a leggy Miranda Kerr with baby Flynn attached to her hip, Jessica Alba looking more fabulous than ever as she takes her daughters to the park, or a glowing J. Lo, flexing those incredible abs on the beach after giving birth to twins.

A new breed of super-mums are bursting through the postpartum haze as stronger versions of their pre-pregnancy selves, determined to be fit and healthy role models for their children, but it’s not just an exclusive club for celebrities and socialites.

After giving birth to twin boys, Julie McDougall was determined to gain back the fitness she had prior to pregnancy.

After completing her second half-marathon, Julie joined Configure Express

in October 2012 to motivate herself to maintain the fitness she had gained from the marathon training. Shortly fell pregnant. Her workouts were now less intense, but during her 12 - week scan, Julie and Nick discovered they were expecting twins.

She put her membership on hold, as she knew that her body would already be under a strained workload with carrying twins and running her business, Reflections Café.

Five months after her twin sons, Charlie and Oliver, the birth of, Julie felt she was ready to head back to Configure Express. It was at this time that her boys had finished breastfeeding and were able to eat solids.

She had lost a lot of energy from constantly feeding two hungry babies and was finding it physically challenging to run the café and carry her growing boys.

She signed up for the Break programme, a fitness and nutrition plan which incorporates a full gym membership with a diet plan, grocery shopping guide and two personal training sessions per week.

“It was what I needed to get going again. I learned a lot about portion sizes, which has set me up with good nutrition habits for life. The staff are all so friendly, it was like I was working out with friends,” Julie said.

Julie incorporated group sessions into her fitness plan, attending a spin class and anaerobic class weekly. She aimed for four nights per week and credits an amazing support network for helping her to achieve her goals.

“I go to the gym in the evening, after the café is closed and when Nick arrives home from work.

“It’s a tag-team effort and he takes full control to give me the time I need to get back on track. Our parents have been amazing, helping with babysitting when I’ve needed to go to the café, and I also have a fantastic and supportive team at Reflections.

“These amazing people in my life have been the key in achieving my fitness goals,” Julie said.

Her hard work, time management and dedication has certainly paid off. To look

at her bounding up flights of stairs two steps at a time, you wouldn’t guess that she turns 40 this year and this super-mum is looking forward to all the life she can give her sons.

“I’m trimmer and stronger than I was before having the twins. I can do press-ups for the first time ever and I can plank for five minutes, so my core strength has improved dramatically.

“I once read that your children only have one childhood, so I want to be healthy and fit to give them the best childhood possible.

“After the boys were born, my life wasn’t just about me anymore. They need me to be happy, energetic and alive, and I feel better than I ever have before,” Julie said.

Taking time out for yourself is one of the best gifts you can give your children. It’s selfless, not selfish. It’s not about vanity, it’s about health.

It’s not focusing on skinny, but focusing on strength. The gift of life is the most precious of all.

You know that feeling you get when 3pm hits. The eyes get droopy, you catch yourself staring into space

and it takes all your willpower not to raid the fridge (or call down to Lolliemania if you’re me!).

Concentrati on lags at this point in the day. Even writi ng this review at 4pm on Monday I am spent. Therefore, I shall stop typing while I have my spirulina, back soon.

Twenty minutes and fi ve tablets of spirulina later, I’m back and much more awake!

I didn’t know much about spirulina before Bob at Health 2000 suggested I try it for this review. Here is what I now know:

Spirulina Blue is high in vitamins and minerals that when working together help aid stress levels, boost immunity, helps with muscle recovery and provides extra energy!

The main ingredient used is algae, which is eff ecti vely seaweed (yuk!) BUT the good guys at Lifestream have coated these tablets in a natural vanilla coati ng, making them tasty!

The algae used in Spirulina Blue is culti vated in a manner that naturally produces higher nutrient levels.

My colleagues and I have been taking Spirulina Blue for the past week. The results are prett y good. Some of us are feeling more energy near the end of the day and some of us are fi nding we are less inclined to reach for yummy treats in the aft ernoon.

So, if you too suff er from the 3pm blues, pop in and see the team at Health 2000 and try the new Spirulina Blue!

The world economy, we hear about it everyday. What is happening throughout the world and how it is

going to aff ect interest rates. Economists say the offi cial cash rate

will increase over the next two years by around two per cent and as a result mortgage interest rates will increase.

When interest rates increase mortgage holders think the worst and those with funds invested are very happy as they receive a greater return on their money.

So how does the world economy aff ect you and your return on investment or your mortgage interest rate? This is an amazing questi on because you'd think it has no correlati on, but in today's world it certainly does.

New Zealand is predominantly an export driven country. Fonterra leads the way as New Zealand's biggest company and one of the largest suppliers of milk powders around the world. Fonterra trades in the $USD. If the USD fl uctuates this has an aff ect on the earning dollar in New Zealand, so farmers may have more or less income at their disposal. When our largest industry providers have more or less income to spend, there is an immediate fl ow on to how much money is or isn't being spent in our local

economy. If farmers have less to spend, they

won't buy new plant and machinery, or something special for themselves. When this occurs the retailers or machinery salesman have less money to spend and the local economy misses out.

If the farmer has extra money to spend, they will buy new plant and machinery or something special for themselves, then the machinery salesman and retailers will have more money to spend and so begins the money-go-round.

So how does this aff ect your mortgage and investment interest rates?

If there is less money being spent central banks "Reserve Bank of NZ" will try to kick start the economy by reducing the offi cial cash rate and get more money into circulati on. If the Reserve Rank feels ther is too much money being spent and

they want to curb infl ati on, which tends to happen with too much spending, the offi cial cash rate is raised.

You may be thinking why not freeze interest rates so they never change.

This was done back in the Sir Robert Muldoon days of the 1980's, as Finance Minister he froze interest rates.

The major eff ect on this was high infl ati on.

When the freeze was lift ed interest rates rapidly increased and many people could no longer aff ord their mortgage payments. As a result many farmers and home owners lost their properti es.

It’s as if we were living in a false economy.

The “free market” as it is a called, is probably the best opti on but you sti ll need to be careful when borrowing and investi ng money.

I personally believe that it is best to deal with local fi nancial insti tuti ons as the decision makers are locals that understand our local economies.

If you want to discuss your mortgage or investment requirements give me a call. We can have a chat over a coff ee and maybe talk about the World Economy and the aff ects on our local economy.

Take care.

Autumn has broadsided me this year, and add to that the strong wind and rain recently and my garden is certainly looking worse for wear.

A few weeks ago I moved some chilli plants out-side in the hope the sucking insect pests would disappear or fall prey to a predator of some description.

First the storm hammered them, and then a sneaky frost nipped them in the buds.

The now tragic-looking plants have been relo-cated under the verandah in the hope they will catch enough sun to recover sufficiently to finish fruiting.

The wind also put paid to whatever fruit was left in the orchard, where all said and done it’s been a miserable harvest.

On a brighter note I’ve harvested some sizable pumpkins, which are safely stored in the garage.

By taking a little care to cure pumpkins, squash or gourds, they will keep for at least three months and some varieties for up to six months.

Firstly cut the fruit with a sharp knife leaving at least 10cm of the stem attached. Be careful not to damage the skin when harvesting; a thumbnail scar can spell doom for a pumpkin.

As pumpkins can “leak” from the bud end, it is wise to put something absorbent underneath, straw is probably the best option, but due to a lack of space and not having any desire to attract mice into my garage I use cardboard.

Arrange the pumpkins in a single layer, not touching each other, on your preferred absorbent surface in a cool place out of direct

sunlight. I use the workbench in my garage where the air can circulate, but a table, straw bale, or any elevated surface is better than the floor.

Check them every week and use or get rid of any pumpkins showing signs of softening or mould.

Onions, shallots and garlic can also be harvest-ed, once the bulb has developed. Leaving them in the ground too long will result in them sprouting a seed head at the expense of the bulb.

Brush the worst of the dirt off the garlic, knot or tie the stems of up to 10 bulbs and hang them in the rafters of the garage, garden shed or any other dry place. Humidity and moisture will very quickly cause mould to form, so check the garlic regularly and throw out any bulbs that are

deteriorating.I use the mesh

cloches

which protected the young plants from birds and of course that pesky cat, during the spring to cure onions and shallots. These too are slung from the rafters in the garage and the bulbs thrown in.

Harvesting is the enjoyable end of the season and well worth the effort when you sit down to a steamy bowl of pump-kin soup and crusty garlic bread on a bitter winter’s evening.

– If you’ve got kids now’s the time to get them harvesting the last of your runner beans – and don’t worry if they don’t make it to the table!

– Remember March can still be quite a warm time of year, so keep watering your garden relatively regularly.

– Now is also a good time to start growing some leeks and spinach. Leeks require a little bit of extra effort but they’re well worth it in the end.

– And spinach is perfect to plant amongst your leek seedlings because you’ll harvest it before the leeks need the space. Spinach is a fantastic plant. Slugs don’t like it, you can eat it when it’s young or old, it grows in dry and wet and just about all year round, and it’s perfect for quiches and salads. You just need to make sure you eat it before it goes to seed.

– If you want winter veges like broccoli and cauli-flower, to be ready to eat in winter, plant them towards the end of March while the weather and soil is still warm enough to give them a kick start. If you wait till May you’ll end up with broccoli in spring when you might be more interested in eating veges like lettuce.

– Lastly, March is also a great time to plant beet-root.

My hydrangeas have only one or two flowers on them this year. They are four-year-old plants and I haven’t treated them differently than other years. They have only flowered in the last month when I have noticed plants full of flowers every-where. Any advice would be appreciated.

Firstly, have you been regularly prun-ing your hydrangeas at the end of the season? Pruning is critical to the health of hydrangeas and promotes new growth that is more vigorous and produces better blooms.

Prune your plants back hard at the end of the season and each successive year remove some of the older wood com-pletely. By removing enough of the old canes, you enable new young and healthy canes to grow. When pruning, do not cut any new green shoots as they will provide the new season flowers.

Ensure you are giving your hydrangeas a deep watering one to two times a week, this is especially important during the summer months – don’t let them dry out.

You can always tell when hydrangeas need a drink – their leaves start to droop.

Give them a boost with regular mulch-ing with compost around the base of the plant.

Finish with a good layer of Daltons Mulch and Grow on top to help maintain soil moisture and temperature. Feed your hydrangea in early spring once the buds begin to open and apply again a month later.

Finally, although you have had limited blooms this year, have your hydrangeas been free flowering well in previous years?

If the numbers of blooms have been declining, then it may be time to look at planting new young plants.

The best time to plant hydrangeas is late winter/early spring when new plants are available from plant centres.

Always carefully select the best available plants and choose ones that are young and healthy looking, with vigorous new shoots. Avoid any root-bound plants.

ARE YOUR HYDRANGEAS

Infecti ous Canine Cough formerly known as Kennel Cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can aff ect dogs

of any age. Dogs in close contact, such as those in boarding kennels, shows, parks and holiday areas are at the greatest risk of infecti on.

Usually, about a week aft er the dog is infected, it will develop a persistent, harsh, hacking cough, which is oft en made worse by exercise. This cough can persist for up to three weeks, someti mes longer.

Some dogs will have a runny nose, some may have a high temperature and someti mes appeti te and energy levels may be aff ected. Infecti ous Canine Cough (ICC) is a multi -factorial disease. This means that one or a number of bacteria and viruses may cause clinical signs which can make treatment diffi cult. Stress and environmental conditi ons can also make the dog more suscepti ble to the disease.

The most eff ecti ve form of treatment is preventi on with an ICC vaccine.

Although vaccinati on doesn’t protect against all the causes of ICC, it protects against the most common ones. It is highly recommended for dogs that have to be boarded or are in regular contact with other dogs.

There are two forms of the vaccine, either injectable or intranasal.

The intranasal form has the advantage of being eff ecti ve within 72 hours aft er administrati on and is especially good for

emergency trips to the kennels because it also does not require an initi al booster. Annual boosters are recommended for conti nuing protecti on just like a fl u vaccine.

There are other causes of coughing including but not limited to there being something physically stuck down your dog’s throat, and heart and lung disease for example so it is worth getti ng any coughing pet checked out.

Recently I have diagnosed several dogs with ICC. There has been a recent outbreak in Canterbury, with more cases reported throughout the region.

Call VetEnt Riverside on (03) 308 2321 today to begin immunity against the disease and give you peace of mind that your dog is receiving adequate protecti on.
