What sort of music do you play?
I’m a trained jazz musician. There’s a bit of jazz happening around town but not many venues are giving us the chance to explore our possibilities right now but I’m hoping that will change very soon. So mostly I play piano and sing pop/soul and easy listening songs.
Who are your favourite artists and inspirations?
Eva Cassidy is my biggest inspiration. I also love Norah Jones, KT Tunstall and Amy Winehouse.
Tell us about your album that is launching soon.
It’s my first album and I’ve written all the music and lyrics myself. It will be released independently very soon, hopefully by the end of this month. I recorded it in Germany in only two weeks. We were in the studio from 8:30am to 10pm every day and it was the most intense experience of my life. It was produced by Lionel Wharton and there’s a mixture of songs sung in English and German. It’s called ‘City of Dreams’ and I comment on current issues within society when I’m writing my lyrics so that’s a strong theme throughout.
What’s the most memorable concert you’ve been to?
Oh it’s hard to choose! I’d have to say Billy Joel rates very highly, I saw him in Germany about five years ago. I also saw Cold Chisel when they played in Mackay last year. I find those guys so inspiring because they’re still putting on a great show and showing that the passion for music never leaves you.
What’s the first album you ever bought?
I think it was Boys II Men!
Tell us about what you have planned with Bridges Café
and Jazz Bar?
I’ll start playing at Bridges semi-regularly soon with the Andrew brothers, Jonathan and Nathaniel. Introducing the jazz vibe at Bridges has been great and it has received a lot of positive feedback. There’s a great jazz following in Mackay and we hope to build on it and turn it into a musical must-do activity!

What do people need to know about the Andrew brothers?
N: We’re freelance guitarists so we do a lot of different stuff but mostly at the moment we play in The Formula. I play bass and Jonathon plays electric. We’ve played with a lot of different groups and at pretty much every venue in Mackay.
We’ve had residencies on Hamilton, Daydream and Lindeman Island but right now we’re the resident musos at Karma. People can catch us there pretty much anytime from Wednesday to Sunday.
What do you love most about performing?
J: The punters – we’ve seen some pretty funny stuff, but the stories probably shouldn’t be shared here! We’re there to entertain them but usually it’s them entertaining us. Plus it’s a great lifestyle, we don’t work full time and make a pretty good living off our show bookings.
What does it take to be a successful covers band in Mackay?
N: Well, we don’t practice much to be honest.
J: The biggest thing that carries us through is our musicianship. We’ve got a bit of ESP going on between the band members, we can all read each other and know when we can capitalise on something that’s working really well. Plus we’re really conscious of keeping our repertoire up-to-date with what people want to hear. After all, we’re playing to get people singing and dancing and if that means we have to play ‘The Gambler’ every night, we’ll do it.
Where’s the ultimate venue you’d like to play?
J: There’s a place called the Baked Potato in Los Angeles that I reckon would be cool.
What’s been your favourite gig so far?
N: I lived in the states for a couple of years while I was studying my Masters of Music and I got the chance to play at the biggest jazz festival they have over there, the Macy’s Music Festival in Cincinnati. Other people in the line-up were Jasmine Sullivan, The O’Jays, Robin Thicke and Anita Baker.
Any plans for an album?
N: Yeah, I’ve already released two instrumental albums when I was 18 and I’ve got a third one in the works that I want to have finished by the end of the year. Then next year I’d like to go on a tour.
J: I’m working towards recording my own album too.
Is there any sibling rivalry?
J: Nah, not at all. We’re competitive within ourselves, always trying to improve, build our skills and, just live music.
What’s the funniest thing you’ve heard said about yourself?
J: I’ve heard rumours that we’ve both played with (legendary jazz musician) George Benson. That, sadly, isn’t true.
N: I heard people thought I was getting around in my own chauffeured limousine. Not true either!
What’s your ultimate goal?
J: We’re just cruisin’ really
and just want to keep making a living off music. Just keep living it day to day.
N: More like hour to hour. We only woke up not long ago, to get in the car and come do this interview!
Sounds like a nice life! How can people find out where you’re playing?
N: Be our friend on Facebook. We put all our gig details on our pages and we’re always looking for new friends (laughs).

What started as something similar to an awkward blind date ended up being a very interesting chat between CORE journo Louise Blines and Mackay muso brothers Jonathon and Nathaniel Andrew. Amongst other things, Louise discovered these guys love their tea, guitars and the entertainment performing for local people provides.

The XV is the new kid on the block for Subaru. In general, it’s the new impresser on roids, with the extra long wheel base and clearance making the difference.
For a compact SUV it is quite comfy with heaps of leg and head room in both the front and rear seats. Although it would be quite squishy for three adults in the rear. The compromise though is in the boot with the spare underneath the boot tray making it even smaller.
I drove the CVT auto. In auto mode the changes were as smooth as a babies bum. In manual mode you have paddles on the wheel like they use in Formula 1. However, that was where the similarities ended. The XV did giddy-up but it didn’t perform like a thoroughbred. I also found the front end a bit loose and not as direct as I would like. Breaking was spot on and very responsive.
As for the interior, this is where
Subaru has spent some time and money. The XV has a really well appointed interior. The fact that the reverse camera comes out as standard is just an added bonus. The XV has a feature screen with various displays that are not only informative but really cool.
Where this car really comes into its own is its economy, boasting a combined average of about 7.6lt / 100km with the aid of the new engine shut down system, which turns the engine off at the lights. This system is also connected to the air-conditioning, so when the temp rises before lights change the engine will start automatically. It also only takes about half a second to restart once you take the foot off the break. The other thing I have to mention is the 5 Star ANCAP rating to achieve the 5 Star rating they received a total of 35.3 points out of 37.

The image they have portrayed and what you see, is a funky modern and very stylish SUV. It has great ground clearance, handling, interior space, safety features to boot and gadgets to entrance any new owner or admirer.
Even the base model gets a reversing camera and more standard safety features than I have ever seen in a base model car before. All models have a multifunction LCD that shows a mass of information at the touch of the button.
It then steps up a notch when you get into the next two models, with the Satnav included, electric sunroof and all the other modern mod cons you come to expect in
much dearer and more prestigious vehicles. Subaru have always been market leaders. They have continued to show this with the XV.
After driving both the manual and the automatic, I felt that the auto was definitely the way to go. With the option of paddle gear changes on the steering wheel, you get the best of both worlds. It also delivers the power of the Subaru XV more efficiently to show what the car it truly capable of.
One thing I should definitely mention is the start-stop technology Subaru have introduced in the XV. This automatically turns the engine off when idling and restarting almost instantly within 0.35 of a second, when required.
Subaru have created a fair bit of hype over their exciting new XV. As their clever TV commercial suggests, they have placed a blend of the best technologies from across their entire range into this one great all-rounder.

It’s a clever fuel-saving initiative. It doesn’t take long to get used to but definitely raises an eye and a little concern the first time it happens, especially when you forget about this great feature during the test drive. Any saving on fuel these days with the current cost of fuel is a great feature.
To sum up, the XV is a great car, jam packed with useful features that must be considered if you are in the market for something modern and stylish to drive.

It’s been two years since Craig Parish bought his 2-door 1969 Camaro from a private owner in Brisbane, but he still spends most weekends under the hood. Although the car was in good condition, Craig wanted to put some special touches on it.

How did you find the Camaro?
We went down to Brisbane and looked at all different types of cars, but couldn’t find anything that we liked. We were about to give up and go home when we saw a private sale. My wife and I had a look at the car; as it turned out, the 1969 Camaro was exactly what we were after.
What condition was the Camaro in when you bought
it?
It came with a 454 big block engine, turbo 400 automatic gear box and a Ford 9 inch diff. All the running gear was in the car and the vinyl interior is installed just as if it had come off the factory assembly line. It also has a roll cage inside. What’s odd is that although the car is American, it’s painted Toyota Hilux Blue.
Parts of the interior weren’t finished off completely though; it didn’t have sun visors. I’m still constantly working on it. I just bought a new dash and autometer gauges for it.
So, where does the magic happen?
I work on it at home; I’ve got a pretty good shed with a car hoist and plenty of tools. I’ve got some friends that are into cars as well, which is a big help. I learn a lot from them, and also just from mucking around. I’ve always been the type of bloke who likes to take things apart and put them back together.
Do you have any other vintage cars?
We have a 1955 Chevy Belair that belonged to my wife’s great-grandfather who bought it brand-new. It hasn’t run since
1976. It’s my next project to get that going. I’ve always liked cars; I’m lucky to have two of them now. I’m planning to join the Chevrolet car club to get club registration on the Belair.
Any advice for guys who want to take up car restoration as a hobby?
If it’s what you love, then go for it! Just keep in mind that it takes a lot of money, so you may need to save up for it.
Besides finishing cars, do you have any other hobbies?
My wife and I are pretty much ‘home’ people. Since we came up to Mackay four years ago from Victoria, we’ve enjoyed house renovations and gardening. We’re currently doing up an older home, building sheds, knocking out walls,
re-painting. I’m actually a plumber by trade so that comes in handy for working around the house.
What brought you up to Mackay?
When we first left Victoria, we were in a caravan just tripping around Australia. When we got to Mackay, we got good jobs and fell in love with the climate.

The 4th generation Camaro ran from 1993 until 2002 and kept the same characteristics of the 1967 original: a coupe style body, rear-wheel drive and V6 or V8 engines. In mid-2000s, the production of the F-Body platform was halted due to decreased sales.
In 1982-1992, the 3rd generation of Camaros offered modern fuel injection, Turbo transmissions and hatchback bodies.
Chevrolet originally released the Camaro in 1966 as a competitor to the Ford Mustang. According to archives, Chevrolet product managers told the press that the Camaro was “a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.” The first generation of Camaros debuted in September 1966, and lasted until 1969.
The 2nd generation, which was heavily re-styled, was introduced in 1970 and lasted until 1981. The Camaro became wider and larger, but still based on the F-body platform and unibody structure. The 1976 Camaro Z28 was featured in the movie “Transformers” as the Autobot “Bumblebee.”
In 2006, the 5th generation Camaro was released. On April 1, 2010, the Camaro was named the World Car Design of the Year at the World Car of the Year Awards.

FISHING
Mangrove jack would be one of the hardest fish to catch because, as the name suggest’s, in their early stages of life they live in the
heavy mangrove root systems.
When they reach the size of approx 60 cm they then venture out to the reef area where they are said to reach up to 20kg. These fish are aggressive feeders and would be one of the dirtiest fighters of any species.
Live baits such as poddy mullet and herring work very well with the smaller baits around the 5 cm mark being best.
Lures, my favorite lures would be;

These lures are best used during the start of the run in tide until half way through the run out tide. Cast these lures along the submerged logs and snags near the mangroves using a tight drag on your reel.
Cut Baits, this is the best way to catch mangrove jack and the most productive. The two baits I use are mullet fillets off a 15cm fish and ½ pilchards.

I use a 5/0 octopus hook and a size 0 or 1 sinker on a 40lb leader with the sinker running down to the hook.

1. I fish for this species only during the wet season in
very small mangrove creeks around the headlands and follow these to the end during run in tides around the neap tides.
2. During the larger tides Jacks will move well into the mangroves making it nearly impossible to catch.
So during the smaller tides Jacks are unable to get into the mangroves and will head up the gutters and feed around the rocks and mangroves where the fresh water inlets are running into the gutters.
3. Use very small casts with no slack line as you cannot give these fish any line as they hit hard and head straight into the
closest snag.
4. I also burley these areas with a pilchard mush.

Over the years, the brothers have won 17 fishing tournaments and competed in over 40 events. Most recently, they were featured on the Australian Fishing Championship TV series, winning three events.
Cy and Kerrin fish for Sweetlip, Emperor, Giant Trevally, Queenfish, Longtail Tuna, Mack Tuna, Mackerel, Threadfin Salmon, Mangrove Jack and reef species such as Coral Trout. “There are lots of good fishing spots in the Whitsundays,” said Cy. “The Giant Trevally get up to 40 kg.”
They’re best known for catching Barramundi in the numerous saltwater estuaries and creeks and impoundment barramundi at Peter Faust Dam. “90% of the tournaments we do are for barramundi,” said Cy. “It’s all catch and release though. The impoundment barramundi have a muddy taste.”
According to Cy, the brothers have similar fishing techniques. “During tournaments we work together to try to catch the five longest fish,” he said. The longest barra they’ve
caught was 126 cm, which isn’t far off the record winning barra at 130cm.
The Taylor brothers have garnered quite a reputation. They’re sponsored by Shimano, Millerods, Lowrance, Minn Kota, Evinrude, Squidgies, Mako sunglasses, Rapala, Tackle Tactics and Fins braid.
While they’ve enjoyed many successes, the Taylor brothers have also had their share of challenges. “The tournaments can be pretty hard,” said Cy. “Competing against Australia’s best anglers can be daunting.”
Apart from stiff competition, nature was no friend to the fishermen. The boys have been pummelled by waves; on a couple occasions they were knocked out of their boat.
Their passion for sport fishing began a few years back when the boys watched the Australian Fishing Championships on TV and decided that they wanted to compete. “We were really keen and practiced almost every weekend,” said Cy. “Sometimes we would go up to the Peter Faust Dam on

Target a specific fish: Try to catch a certain type of fish by applying your knowledge on that species. You’ll learn more about them and often end up with more captures.
Hook, line and sinker, Fishing tips from Cy and Kerrin:The most successful fishermen usually have an indepth knowledge of the particular fish species they’re targeting, whether it be Bream to big Giant Trevally. They know all about the fish - where it prefers to hang out, what it feeds on and the techniques that work effectively.
All fish species prefer different baits, techniques, water clarity, current, depth, structure, cover etc, etc... The main key to catching more of a particular fish is to understand everything there is to know about them.
Here are a few quick tips that might help you next time you’re on the water.

When Cy and Kerrin aren’t on the water in their 4.2 metre tinny, they work as journalists contributing articles and photos to Fishing World, Queensland Fishing Monthly, Tournament Angler Guide, Catch Magazine and a variety of websites.
The boys also work part-time in their father’s business, Taylor Boat Maintenance in Conway Beach.
Fresh is best: When you’re bait fishing, it pays to have nice fresh or live bait. You’ll catch much more fish on well presented fresh or live baits. Learn how to throw a cast-net to catch mullet, herring and prawns – dynamite baits for a range of species.
Fish around cover: Instead of casting out into open water, position your bait around cover such as rock walls, mangrove roots, oyster rocks and jetty pylons. Being able to land your lure or bait right in tight to cover will boost your angling ability and your catch rates.
Keep a fishing diary: Note any observations you made when catching a big fish or having a hot session. Tide stage, current strength, water clarity, depth etc. are all worth recording. Patterns will begin to emerge and then you can start keying in on the fish!
Be stealthy: Most fish species are masters of vibration detection and have a keen eyesight. Limit any unnatural noises and stay low to the ground when sight fishing in clear water.
3 P’s: Persevere with patience and persistence – so many times a quality fish is caught when you decide to stay a bit longer!
Lastly, remember to care for the environment and the fishery. Keeping a limit is fine, but only keep what you need. When releasing a fish, return it back to the water fast for better chances of survival.
Finesse fishing: When you’re fishing busy areas, use lighter braided lines, smaller hooks, lighter sinkers and swivels. This will improve your results in areas where the fish are wiser and trickier to catch.
The whole team has achieved some great things in just over a month.
The biggest improvement has been in the overall strength and fitness of the group as a whole, but particularly the girls. We haven’t measured improvement in fitness yet, but these two have improved their fitness dramatically. Joe and Paul are training hard while back, and running as much as possible after shifts in the mines.

12 years. I bought Gordi’s and what was then Doors in 2003 and before that I owned or part-owned Taylors, Pacinos, Pulse and the Mackay Surf Club.
What is your background?
I’ve been a businessman for as long as I can remember. Before the nightclub game I worked in car industry finance for 15 years and was named No.1 Motor Finance Person in Australia for two years running.
How has the entertainment industry changed over the last decade?
I have seen the industry change so much over the years. Licensing laws and controls are the obvious changes. I strongly believe that because I am 100% committed to running my business with a hands on approach, it makes the implementation of these controls a lot easier for my staff and our patrons. Its this attitude that has kept me alive in this industry for so long.
What drives you?
My work is a lot of fun and when I come to the office, it
doesn’t feel like I’m at work.
What are the perks of working in this industry?
The freebies! When I owned Taylors and Pacinos I had relationships with Fosters CUB and Penfolds so the gifts during that time were great!
What is the worst thing about working within this
industry?
All the bureaucracy. And when people can’t recognise when they need to go home. We don’t want to kick people out but we have responsible service of alcohol rules to follow.

Building ZeBar and bringing some style back to Mackay’s nightlife. Plus offering a range of night time entertainment options from cocktails to dancing to karaoke and keeping them all consistently really successful. And my beautiful wife and four children!
What do you do to relax and get away from it all?
I’m a big AFL fan and I love driving my cars. I’ve got two convertibles but most importanly I love to spend time with my family.

I was a glassy at 18 and worked my way up to being 25 and the owner of the best club in Airlie Beach.
What are your feelings on current trends in the
entertainment industry?
For starters, Airlie is very different to Mackay. We’re very backpacker based but I am noticing more mine workers moving to the area and coming out to enjoy the nightlife. So I’m focussing on a more ‘local’ client base, rather than just the holiday-makers.
What do you hope to achieve in the future?
Just keep building up Evolution’s profile, cementing it as the best night spot in Airlie, and continuing to bring the hottest DJ’s from across Australia and overseas.
What are the perks of working in the
entertainment industry?
Meeting lots of interesting people, finding out their stories and building a relationship between the patron and the club.
What is the worst thing about working in the
entertainment industry?
The negative approach that lots of people have towards it. They just think of nightclubs as seedy and can’t see where we are trying to take it. Plus I get pigeonholed because I’m so young.
How do you keep things fresh within the club?
We’re always trying to give visitors the ‘Evolution Experience’. We work really hard to make people welcome while embracing the importance of everyone’s safety. We’re also very involved with the community and have a range of fundraising initiatives we’re supporting throughout the year like Movember and the PCYC here.
What do you do to relax and get away from it all?
It’s pretty much all work for me all the time because I’m really trying to make my mark. When I’m socialising at home it’s always with my staff because they’re the key to Evolution’s success and they’re like my family.

Use these questions to ensure you engage the best builder for your renovation.
What is the history of your renovation company? Experience makes a difference. Find out how and when the contractor got into the business, and how long the company has been around. Ask about the contractor’s relevant education and training – ensuring they have both the technical and business skills required to run a solid company and provide quality services. Also, ask about the size of the company; some have their own staff while others rely on subcontractors.
What services do you offer?Every contractor will provide a specific range of services. Some will include design services, while others will work with independent designers. You need to have a clear understanding of what services the contractor can provide for your project.
Have you done renovations like ours before?
Can we talk to your past clients?
Can we visit one of your current projects
Workers’ Compensation & Liability Insurance?
Will we get a written contract?
What warranty do you offer on your work?
Some contractors specialise in specific types of projects, such as roof repairs or kitchen renovations. Others offer more general renovation services and can handle a wide range of projects. It is important to know that a contractor has experience with projects similar to yours – ask how many in the past year or two.
Request a list of past customers you can contact for references. Professional contractors are proud of the work they do and will be happy to provide this information. If the answer is no, stop the interview right there – never hire anyone who is not willing to give you references.
Visiting a work site can tell you a lot about how the contractor operates. If the contractor has a current project, ask to visit it and take note of details such as how well the site is organised and whether it is clean and tidy.
Hiring someone who is not properly insured could put you at considerable legal and financial risk. Professional contractors will provide you with proof of liability insurance and Workers’ Compensation coverage.
If the answer is NO, stop the interview right there. Always, always get it in writing. The contract sets out the agreement between you and the renovator in detail, from the description of the work to the actual materials to be used, to the price you will pay, to the responsibilities of both you and the renovator.
A professional contractor provides you with a written warranty that spells out what is covered and for how long. And they deliver prompt follow-up service if there are problems or defects in their work. When checking references, ask past customers about the contractor’s warranty service performance.
Take the time you need to explore the possibilities for your home and develop a firm plan. Begin with the fundamentals – what do you need and how do you want your ‘new’ home to look, feel and work for you and your family. Once you have a clear idea of the ‘big picture’, an HIA builder can help you work out all the details.
Decide as early as possible how much money you want to spend – this allows you and your builder to focus on the work that is achievable within that budget. Experienced builders can provide sound cost advice and recommendations. Sit down with your lender and discuss the amount you can reasonably afford and the most suitable financing options. Remember that your budget should cover everything that may arise from the renovation, including such items as new drapery, blinds, furniture and appliances.
Thinking ahead avoids short-term renovations that may need to be redone in the future. Discuss your short- and long-term goals openly with your builder. Professional builders can conduct a thorough inspection of your home and offer suggestions for the most effective sequencing of work over a period of time.
Don’t choose a builder on price alone. While it is always tempting to go for the lowest price, you need to consider the implications of doing so. Does the builder understand what’s involved in your project and have the necessary experience? Will the builder offer a warranty on the work? Will the builder still be in business if you need to call back?
If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well, and that means using products that offer the right combination of performance, durability and aesthetics. Experienced builders can help you choose the best products within your budget.
Dealing with a HIA builder is your greatest protection against an incompetent or unfinished job. A written HIA contract spells out the arrangements between you and your builder and describes your renovation in detail.

Features and fees worth considering when choosing a loan include, but are not limited to:
Principal and interest versus interest only loans: Principal and interest loans require borrowers to make regular monthly or fortnightly repayments against the principal (the borrowed amount) as well as paying part of the interest accrued on the loan. In comparison, interest only loans require borrowers to repay only the interest accrued during the term of the loan; therefore, repayments are lower than with a standard principal and interest loan.
Fixed or variable rate: When needing certainty over repayments, consider a fixed rate loan, however these may not offer all the features needed, such as the ability to contribute extra payments and redraw on them or use an offset account. It comes down to what the market does and how the borrower feels about strapping into the rate rollercoaster. Splitting the loan amount across part fixed/part variable may be a good compromise for those seeking some stability along with flexibility.
Loan redraw facility: Having a redraw facility allows income and/or extra repayments to be put into the loan account, and withdrawn when needed. Rather than earning interest, the funds drop the principal loan amount, reducing the interest owed on it. This does take budgeting discipline.
Loan fees: When comparing loans, review the upfront, ongoing and exit fees so you know exactly what you will pay over the life of the loan. Costs may include loan application fees, monthly account keeping fees, redraw

Manufactured in Italy, the ASA8 is a 12 volt sliding gate operator. Like all sliding gate operators the ASA8 is self locking and comes with manual override by key for emergencies. The ASA8 is suitable for gates to 800 kilograms in weight and has a full aluminium base complete with mounting plate and limit actuators. How did the shed come about?
When we moved to Andergrove from Moranbah five years ago, we had a lot of stuff, so I ordered a tin shed and built a loft to hold it all. We put our camping gear up there, along with my air compressor and spare car parts.
From there, I lined the walls, mounted retractable air hoses and power cords on the loft walls and built shelves for the shed walls. Soon I thought, ‘I’ll make this my den for entertaining’, so I started on the bar and lounge. I’d come back from Moranbah on my days off and do a little bit more on the shed each time.
How long were you in Moranbah?
I grew up in Moranbah. We moved there when I was six years old. There was nothing there back then. Moranbah was a great place to grow up in, but it’s not a family town anymore. I still work out there on shifts.
It seems that you get a lot done on your days off. Tell us story behind the shed’s bar?
We had a left over outdoor table setting, so I mounted the table top to a heat lamp and bought some bar stools for it. On the bar shelves I have beer bottles, cans, and glasses from all over the world that I picked up or people brought back for me.
Tell us about your entertainment system:
I mounted a plasma TV on the wall across from the bar, and I’ve got a stereo system hooked up for CDs and radio. We sit out here in the winter drinking beer and watching V8 Supercars. My mates love it here. Sometimes we hook up Guitar Hero to the TV during parties.

In the backyard of Kevin Dalton’s Andergrove home stands a tin shed that every man dreams of.
Exhaust pipes from former cars hang from the ceiling. Two fridges stocked with beer and soft drinks, a pedestal drill, and five tool cabinets are within easy reach. A bar, complete with special edition cans of Fosters released for the 1986 Australian Grand Prix, stands in the corner next to a lounge with old truck seats and a tyre coffee table.
A former diesel fitter, Kevin has a wealth of knowledge that helped him to build one of the best sheds in Mackay. CORE magazine visited Kevin’s shed to talk shop about his man cave.

Paget. I race go-karts in Mackay Kart Club meets. It’s been a while since I’ve been on the track; I’m resting up from a back injury at the moment. I’m still working on my second kart though.
How often are you in the shed?
I’m out here every day for a couple of hours doing something. It might be washing the car or working on my son’s bikes. Right now I’m working on a Harley for my brother and finishing off the shed.
What does your family think of the shed?
My wife likes it; she comes out to see me in here. She’s got her scrapbook room, which is like her shed. My daughter comes out to help me with the go-karts; she’s a bit of a petrol head. My son also joins me in the shed to work on his bikes; he’s got all his tools in here too.
Where did you get your inspiration for the shed?
I helped set up a workshop at Riverside, so I had lots of ideas from then. Other than that, I start building and see what happens.

TRIMMING THE DOOR
When allowing for a non-square doorway, it’s best to hinge the door on the most vertical doorpost. Take the side of the door you’ll be attaching to this post and find the centre of this side. Measuring up and down from this centre to mark the height of the door will leave an equal amount, top and bottom, to plane or shave off.
From the top mark, measure the diagonal to the other edge of the door. Keeping the measure taut, from where the diagonal meets the edge, use your pencil to mark a slight arc on the face of the door, then measure the base of the door from the hanging side to this arc. Repeat for the other diagonal.
Plane the side to the trim marks. It’s easier and faster if you trim with the grain.Trim the sides first. Then hold up the door against the frame to ensure it fits. Then trim the top and the base.
KNOWING WHAT TO MEASURE
When putting a new door in, you need to know two things:
1. The dimensions of the door.2. If the door and doorway are square.
Measure the doorway top, bottom and both sides. Then take 3mm off the top and sides and at least 5mm off the bottom to get the right clearance.
Find out whether the doorway is square by measuring both diagonals – top right to bottom left, and top left to bottom right. If one diagonal is longer than the other, you’ll need to allow for this, so buy a slightly larger door and trim it down.
IT ALL HINGES ON THE HINGESMark a line that shows where the top of the hinges will be, on the door and on the frame. This should be about 160mm from the top and about 300mm from the base.
Placing it hinge side up, place the hinge against this line – making sure the pin sits flat, and as close to the edge as possible. Mark around the hinge. Then mark the depth of the hinge on the edge of the door and using a sharp chisel, gently carve out this wood.
Mark where the screw holes will be, drill with a narrow drill bit and screw the hinges to the door.
Now hold the door up to the frame – at right angles to the frame (as if it’s opened). Make sure the door is at the right height.
Trace around where the hinges will sit against the frame. Remove the door, and as before, carve out the rebate where the hinge will sit in the frame.
Using only one screw per hinge, attach the door to the frame. If it opens and closes properly, drill the remaining holes and secure the door. If the door sticks, remove and plane. Add handles and latches once the door is hung.
HINTS & TIPS
Doors, like architecture, change with the times. Choose one that suits your house.
Doors come in three standard widths. Most doorframes have been created to suit these sizes. If your doorway or frame is not standard, choose the next size up, and trim it down.
If you’re replacing a door, try and use the same size hinges as before. This makes the job easier.
If you’re using the existing hinge holes, you can ensure a secure screw by filling the old holes with matchsticks and wood glue.
If the hinge on your old door has been painted in, go around the edges and the screw slots with a screwdriver.
If you’re using flush hinges on internal doors, you don’t need to chisel the rebate on one side. Allow for this when deciding where the hinges will fit against the old frame.
Hanging a new door, outside or inside, it’s not as
complicated as it may seem. With the right tools, and the
right preparation, the only really tough part is deciding which
door you want to hang.

CHALLENGE
COURTNEY VS BEN
We decided this month to challenge Ben and Court to a battle of building and Multi Rack made for the perfect location.
It was hot and the smell of another CORE Challenge lingered in the air as we pulled up to Multi Rack in Glenella. We had a funny feeling this Challenge may get physical, and with Courtney’s piercing gaze and sweaty forehead, I knew she was keen.
We ventured inside to be happily greeted by the crew at Multi Rack, who all had a cheeky grin on their faces. I was hoping something was simply in my teeth but then they showed us a flat-packed 3 shelf starter
bay; “You guys are going to go head to head to see who can put one of these together the quickest”. It was on!
Courtney immediately started flirting with the boys hoping they may give her a few tips (she’ll claim that she didn’t, but she was working the innocent girl angle like a champ). With a few hair flicks and a flutter of the eyelashes the boys gave in, giving Courtney a head start by putting together the first few pieces of her

CORE shelving bay. With Courtney poking her tongue at me, I remained calm and focussed; I was pretty sure she’d give up today in fear that working up a sweat may ruin her Facebook pose for the photos. The challenge was ready to start!
With a quick countdown, the challenge was on as Courtney and I raced to put this starter bay together. Piece by piece my frame was coming along nicely and my confidence only grew as I looked over at a confused Courtney swearing like a sailor.
As her frame lay scattered around her, I’d had a great run and was just about ready to place in the wooden shelves to secure the win. “Just hurry up and finish Ben” I heard Courtney spray my way.
With a final click, my 3-shelf starter bay was done; Courtney meanwhile had found comfort in the nearby fan as she glared at the mess she’d made. Graceful as she always is, she took the loss like a true athlete; flipping me the
bird with the claim that she’d let me win.
Either way, my starter bay stood proud like a horse that had just won the Melbourne Cup; she had done well and to let her know I patted her middle shelf.
All in all, the guys at Multi Rack were great and their shelving units are top class and easy to put together. I just wasn’t looking forward to Courtney on the drive home; maybe next time we should take two cars!!
I’d had a great run and was just about ready to place in the wooden shelves to secure the win.

What do you do for a crust?
As little as possible if you ask the other guys in the yard. But I fix boats from the smallest tinny to 120 footers, with a variety of works, from playing with exotic materials like carbon and kevlar, climbing and repairing masts, to simply making an esky.
How did your career start?
When I was about seven years old some lad who lived down the road from me was building himself a Crowther Catamaran, so I used to go and help him and chew his ear off.
What’s the biggest boat you’ve worked on?
140 footer.
What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve seen as a fitting on a boat?
Well it’s a toss up between DJ mixing gear in an engine room on a 120 footer and a grand piano on a 130 footer. The new owners wanted the piano removed but it was actually part of the boat.
Where’s the coolest place sailing has taken you?
Without a doubt Lord Howe Island - what a spot! To me, it was like sailing into Batman Island. The fishing and the place itself is just awesome. If I had the money I would love to go back.
You’ve raced in the Sydney to Hobart a couple of times. Tell us about your experiences.
We didn’t make it to the finish one of the times I raced and I’ve never been so disappointed. We were just entering the Bass Straight, I was at the helm and it was a bit lumpy, so

we waited until dawn to put a tuck (reef) in. As we were lowering the main, the lazy runner was let go and the main whipped the runner and put a vertical tear up the leach of the main. It was all over. But the time that I did make it I can tell you I’ve never been so exhilarated or so frigging cold!
You’ve been responsible for refurbishing two America’s Cup boats. What work was involved in these massive jobs?
Quite a lot as both times they had been left for a long period of time, and it involved everything from pulling out the rig (the mast), to getting them sea worthy for their return to Sydney Harbour.
What is your dream boat?
I would love to buy an old IMS or IOR maxi and turn it into a cruiser for the family. That way, you still have the speed and some creature comforts.
What boat would you love the opportunity to work on?
One that I designed!
Do you ever get sea sick?
Well I’ve never hurled, but probably the closest was when I was about 10 and we were fishing out the heads of the Burnett River on a bit of a lumpy day. I was glad when my mate’s dad said we weren’t catching anything so it was time to move on.

Fashion model Gemma Scott went from Airlie to Milan
Jet set Gemma grew up working part-time in her parent’s business, Scott Timbers. After she was discovered as a teenager, Gemma has modelled for major labels world-wide. Modelling isn’t her only ambition though; Gemma has her sights set on becoming a naturopath. CORE Magazine chatted with Gemma about her career highs and lows as well as her Whitsunday roots.

How did your modelling career begin?
My modelling career started in Proserpine of all places! I was spotted by Henry Peterson, who holds an annual model competition in Townsville, and then introduced me to my former agent.
Which designers have you worked with?
Wow, that would be a long list, with many important names now forgotten. The clothing designers most people would recognise include Dolce & Gabanna, Roberto Cavalli, Emillio Pucci, Christian Dior, Versace, Calvin Klein, Hermes, Adidas, Levis Strauss, Chloë and Mossimo.
That’s quite the list! Where have you travelled for modelling?
Two years after I started modelling, I began travelling internationally. In chronological order, I’ve been to New Zealand, Taiwan, Milan, Germany, Greece, Cyprus, Sydney, Japan, Paris,
Hong Kong, Korea, China and Singapore. I’ve seen many places more than once! During my travels, I’ve had many opportunities to visit countries that are near by for holidays or flight layovers.
Modelling seems pretty glamorous; is it also hard work?
Most of the time, yes! Working in China for example, with a Spanish photography team suggesting one thing and the Korean designers wanting another thing, it can be very challenging.
The hardest work comes from Asia in general. I’ve had many jobs that were shot through the night. I’ve also had double booking days where I shot for eight hours, had dinner, shot for another six hours in a different studio, with new hair and makeup, slept a little, and then shot another eight hours. Shooting for sixteen plus hours is really not that fun, even if they are paying you hourly.
Mentally picturing the next ‘pose’ is hard work. In China, you have to
be lightening fast; time is money, money is time. There are a million outfits which all need at least thirty poses. Sometimes I would just do the same poses repeatedly like it was a yoga routine.
What’s the craziest photo shoot you’ve done?
My most recent crazy shoot was last December for an underwater equipped studio based in Beijing. It was -1 degree Celsius outside and I was not prepared for this last minute job.
Somehow I pulled on a mermaid outfit and swam around elegantly underwater holding my breath while the photographer shot through a window in the tank. Thankfully the ordeal resulted in some surprisingly artistic and beautiful pictures, but sadly another flu infection for me.
Apart from the long hours, what’s been the most challenging part of modelling?
Missing out on many
celebrations and special occasions with family and friends, as well as making so many friends around the world who I usually don’t get to see again unless we wind up in the same country.
When was the moment that you knew you’d hit it big?
I try to never think that I’ve ‘made it’ or ‘completed my goals’ because then there must be an end to my career. I always keep striving for more and never really register where I am in terms of success. I am forever happy with the experiences that I’m living.
What are your future career ambitions?
This past year has helped me to understand what I admire the most in my life and how I can picture myself achieving more in the future. Sometimes I felt quite lost at this stage of thought, but it’s necessary to explore all possibilities.

while I continue to work overseas. I am very happy to have a new direction and to have found what I have been subconsciously looking for over the past three years.
In the meantime, I will continue to model, but I won’t make it my main priority. That being said, things can change at any moment so I mostly just go with the flow.
Where are you currently living?
I am still always on the move. Japan is in my foreseeable future for a few months. I would really like to stop living out of a suitcase soon. Hopefully I’ll move to an established city in Asia with more of a Western influence so that I can begin to branch out into natural medicine.
When you come home, where are the places you’re sure to visit and the things you’re sure to do?
Coming home is always like a detox holiday for me! I spend a lot of time at my parent’s, with my sisters and friends. It’s never been a planned event, but we always seem to have road trips somewhere, the odd BBQ, and sometimes head over to the islands if we are celebrating a special occasion.
Your parents own Scott’s Timbers in Airlie Beach. Did you ever help out at the shop over the years? How have your parents played a role in your career?
Yes. My childhood memories always have something to do with cleaning up the never ending dust and timbers around the work shop. It was so boring, but it was a great way for my parents to teach my sisters and I how to act in a working environment and to respect pocket money as it was ‘hard work.’
My parents are the most supportive people I have ever known. There is nothing that they don’t understand or can’t talk me through. They were my biggest support in the first few years, despite having a business to run. Being able to talk to mum on Skype at 2am while I am having a crisis in Europe shows they’re a pretty dedicated lifeline!
What were your fondest childhood memories?
Probably the simple things, like the leisure of not having to be confused by anything but some annoying maths homework that took all of thirty minutes! That’s the first thing I think about in terms of emotional memories; that and Weetbix for some reason!
Tell us about growing up in the Whitsundays:
I attended Cannonvale Primary School and Proserpine High School. It was what some people might call a ‘sheltered childhood’, which is something I don’t mind at all now that I look back on it! Small towns have their benefits; friends are just a walk away and you are in a safe environment.
Once I started travelling I realised how much I missed the beaches and the relaxed atmosphere, so I like to come back when I’m free. It is a good place to clear your mind.

Chicci boasts an accomplished kitchen crew. “My head chef Piyush is from Sydney and has worked with highly qualified chefs from different cuisine backgrounds to serve top-notch food,” said Ricky. “Our kitchen has a great team which includes Raman and Vipin from Sydney as well. We all have great passion and a love of food.”
The atmosphere in Chicci matches their cuisine. Designed by award winning New Zealand architect Murali Bhaskar, the restaurant interior is polished and contemporary. Light shines through floor to ceiling windows at the entrance and through gaps in the timber panels that line the walls.
Chicci is the second restaurant in the Mackay region owned and operated by Ricky. Alongside business partner Amani Khehra, Ricky got his start with Spice N’ Flavour on Victoria St in 2010. “Having worked in the hospitality industry around the world for the past 11 years, I have gained a great deal of valuable experience,” said Ricky.
Opening Chicci earlier this year was a smart move for Ricky. “With a booming population in the Northern Beaches area, it was the right time and perfect location to start something different,” he said. “So far we’ve been getting positive feedback from the customers, both from the local area and outer suburbs.”
All it takes to brew beer is a few simple ingredients: grains, water, yeast, flavouring such as hops, and equipment. Although there are many different recipes and methods for brewing beer, the basic process is the same across the board.
First, grains are boiled in water and then strained out. The left-over water is boiled again and flavoured with hops. Once it’s cool, the water is poured into a container and yeast is added to begin the fermentation process. Then, it’s a waiting game. Fermentation times can range from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.
Once you’ve brewed the beer, it’s time to bottle. You’ll need a racking cane, tubing and a tubing clamp on hand. After emptying the beer from the jug into a pot, all you need to do is syphon it into bottles. Clamps can be purchased to cap glass bottles or you can use plastic bottles with screw tops.

How did you get into hockey?
All my family plays hockey, including my sisters. One day I picked up one of their sticks and started playing.
You’ve been moved from Mackay to Brisbane and now you’re living in Perth. Was it difficult to adjust?
Moving home is always hard and moving to the opposite side of the country makes it more difficult but I had a lot of support in Perth, which made the transition smoother.
You’ve said that the hardest things to give up during training are family and sleep. Why did you stick with hockey?
Everybody has to make sacrifices to do what they love. I really enjoy hockey and I’ve made a lot of good friends from it, which makes the sacrifices worthwhile.
Who are your hockey idols?
One would definitely have to be Dean Butler. He played in the same position as me and he
was just finishing his career as I was beginning mine. When I first joined the Kookaburras, it was amazing to play with the likes of Jamie Dwyer and Mark Knowles. It was a childhood dream come true.
Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?
Before a game, I try to have a bit of a snooze and then get geared up with the team while playing some loud music. When I was younger I used to always listen to ‘The World’s Greatest’ by R.Kelly.
What do you remember from your first game with
the Kookaburras?
There was a lot of adrenalin and butterflies. It’s funny when you play for the first time, you lose your breath pretty quickly because you’re so excited, but you soon calm your nerves and get on with it.
You’ve played over 60 international matches. Who’s your favourite team to play against?
It would have to be Germany. They’re always a tough contest. When we play against them, there’s a bit of rivalry there.

How will your life change now that you’re on the London 2012 Kookaburras training squad?
Our Olympic campaign started on January 18, which was the beginning of a hard eight months of training. There has been gym skills training, gym sessions, running sessions and yoga sessions to make sure we’re keeping our bodies fit and injury free. We only rest on Sundays.
Who would you say is the biggest competition for the Kookaburras?
There are a number of teams who are capable of winning the Olympics. While at the moment it’s hard to tell how teams will play, I think Spain will be our biggest competition.
What are you most looking forward to when it comes to London 2012?
It would be great to see what the Olympic village looks and feels like. To see so many sporting greats would be even better.

Matthew Swann, a defender and midfielder born and bred in Mackay, has joined the 28 players selected for the Kookaburras 2012 London Olympic Games Training Squad. Matthew played for West Mackay Hockey Club and Queensland Blades before he was picked up by the Australian Kookaburas in 2009.
Sponsored by Mazon Hockey, Matthew is making quite the name for himself. In December
2011, Matthew was named World Junior Player of the Year after playing with the Kookaburas in the World Cup, Champions Trophy and Commonwealth Games.

Suicide is a men’s health issueCar accidents and cancer claim many lives, but for young Australian men, suicide is the most deadly. According to the Grapevine Group, suicide is the leading cause of death for men under the age of 44 years. While it may come as a surprise, Australian statistics show that males are four times more likely to die by suicide than females.
Known as ‘the silent killer’, talking about suicide is seen as socially uncomfortable or even taboo. To prevent more tragic and untimely deaths, people like Airlie Beach hairdresser Renee Martin and Mackay resident Kim Brett are facilitators for MACKAY – SUPPORT AFTER SUICIDE.
It is a branch of SOSBSA- Survivors of Suicide Bereauement Support Association which is based in Brisbane, Cairns and Rockhampton.
Two years ago, Renee’s husband took his own life. Renee then tried to find a support group in the Mackay and Whitsunday area but there was nothing close by. Renee flew to Brisbane a few times to attend SOSBSA support meetings and felt relieved that finally she could discuss personal feelings about her husband’s suicide.
“When my husband suicided, I didn’t know what to do,” said Renee. “I didn’t know who to talk to. You can only talk to your family for so long until you feel like a burden. Everyone in the support group have all lost someone to suicide, so you feel you can be honest within the group and relate to their grief. Everyone gets the opportunity to tell their story, there are a few tears but it feels good to cry.”
Before he committed suicide, Renee’s husband sought medical treatment and admitted himself to hospital several times. Because of the lack of support facilities in Airlie Beach, he had lived at OzCare in Mackay so that he could attend AA meetings nightly.
Renee doesn’t know the exact reason why her husband took his own life. “You can try guessing how they were feeling, but you’ll never have the true insight. You could drive yourself mental trying to search for an answer.”
During 2011 Renee decided to start the procedure to form a support group for family and friends who are bereaved from suicide. Renee volunteered at schoolies where she met a 17 year-old girl whose boyfriend committed suicide three months earlier. “That hit the nail on the head that we needed a support group in the Mackay and Whitsundays region. To see a young girl having to try and cope with her personal grief, I could really feel her pain. When I told her I understood how she was feeling as my husband had suicided, she relaxed a bit and opened up to how she was feeling.”
Renee is still going through the process of grieving. “With any loss, you never stop grieving,” she said.

WHAT TO DO:
Be direct; talk openly & matter-of-factly about suicide. Ask the person, “Are you thinking of killing yourself?” Don’t lessen the reality of the situation by using phrases like “ending it all” or “going to sleep.”
Listen to the person in crisis. Allow expressions of feelings, including feelings about wanting to die.
Make a specific contract with the person to call you, a crisis line, or some other person before they do anything to hurt or kill themselves. If the person won’t make such a promise, it is not safe to leave them alone for any period of time.
Get involved. Become available. Show interest & support. Let the suicidal person know that you care about them.
Don’t try to handle a suicidal person by yourself. Bring in other friends or family or call a crisis hotline for support.
WHAT NOT TO DO:
Don’t say things like “It’s not so bad” or “Things will get better soon.” That invalidates the overwhelming feelings that the suicidal person is having & can cause them to feel very alone.
Don’t be judgmental. Don’t talk about whether suicide is right or wrong, or feelings & good or bad. Don’t talk about suicide in judgmental terms, such as “doing something dumb.”
Never dare the person to do it or tell the person that you don’t think that they would be able to do it.
Don’t underestimate a threat of suicide. We all want to believe that a friend or loved one isn’t at risk, but the fact is that people who threaten to commit suicide often do. By the time friends & family become aware of the suicidal thoughts, the risk of suicide is often very high. Take the person seriously.
