S On September 6, 2018, nearly 100 individuals, from 39 different countries of origin, gathered at Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark to accomplish one shared goal: to become U.S. citizens. Youth Services Manager Jacki Fulwood represented the Dayton Metro Library at the ceremony.
“It was an emotional milestone, featuring some of the biggest smiles I've ever seen,” said Fulwood. “It was an honor to introduce these citizens to their Library. Many come from countries that don’t have an equivalent to the American public library. It’s important for them to know that the Library is free and open to them, and that we offer so many resources that can help them navigate life in our community.”
Attending monthly naturalization ceremonies is just one of the ways DML connects with immigrants and non-native English speakers.
“Everyone needs access to information, but we recognize that this community has specific needs we can address,” says Rachel Gut, Deputy Executive Director. “Working with our partners, we are able to provide assistance with things like housing, citizenship, language acquisition, and enrolling children in school.”
NEW AMERICANS SERVICES & RESOURCES:
• World languages book collection• Information and referral to local organizations and immigrant support services• Educational resources for literacy, workforce and legal knowledge• Resources for becoming a U.S. citizen• Online learning platforms, including language and professional skills• English language conversation practice at Talk Tables • Multi-language eBooks (Overdrive) and film streaming (Kanopy)• Translated Library forms and publicity
• Cultural programs and partnerships (film screenings, discussions, performances)• Outreach at naturalization ceremonies, schools, and community events• Translation and interpretation services available upon request
Visit the NEW AMERICANS area on the Main Library’s second floor, or call (937) 463-2665 for information.
“If anyone should be welcoming new citizens to the United States, it should be us. The Library is an open, accessible space for everyone who seeks information and learning.”
– Rachel Gut, Deputy Executive Director

THE CONVENIENCE OF A HOLD LOCKER
It’s early in the morning and you’re on your way to work. Wouldn’t it be nice to stop by the Library and pick up the book that’s come in for you? The Library isn’t open yet... but you used a convenient HOLD LOCKER! You can swing by the Library anytime (before, during or after hours) to pick up your items from the HOLD LOCKER, check them out yourself, and be on your way!
Next time you request or reserve materials for yourself, choose the 24/7 HOLD LOCKER as the pickup location. HOLD LOCKERS are currently available at the Kettering-Moraine, Miami Township, Miamisburg, Northwest and Vandalia Branches, as well as the Main Library. Questions? Call 937.463.2665.

AND TRAINS, OH MY!Heads up - in November and December, there may be a few reptiles at your Library! You might see a turtle, owl or snake – even glimpse a fox! At many of our Branches, you’ll hear the sounds of a model train on the tracks. And you’ll definitely see children learning, experiencing, and exploring the world at their Library.
The Dayton Metro Library partners with many respected community organizations to offer quality programming for children. With our focus always on literacy and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math), Library programs are both educational and fun, led by experts who give kids the opportunity to have hands-on learning experiences outside of school.
