Students who choose to drop out of a PSEO course after the college’s official date for class withdrawal, the student and/or parents/guardians may be financially responsible for reimbursing YME High School for expenses incurred that are associated with the class including course fees and textbooks and required materials and/or having a WD (withdraw) grade added to your transcript. Please make careful consideration when selecting a PSEO course.

On-site: YME offers college credit on-site. Criteria for enrollment is the same as PSEO Options. ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS: Another “College Credit” option is ARTICULATION. Upon completion of this course a student must demonstrate ‘mastery’ and ‘Test Out’. Our high school Instructor then completes a CERTIFICATE OF ARTICULATION which is accepted for credit at Minnesota Technical Colleges and the MNSCU system (State Universities). Articulation credits are determined at the college and may be credited for 1-4 credits per course. POST SECONDARY REQUIREMENTS: *Students are reminded that colleges, technical colleges, job programs, and the military may require additional courses or specific levels of achievement in order to enter their programs. 4 Year Universities/Colleges: 4 years of Language Arts 3 years of Social Studies 3 years of Mathematics 3 years of Science *Minnesota Colleges are also highly recommending two years of a World

Language *Computers Technology *Fine Arts Note: ACT composite of 18 OR 2.6 high school GPA OR top 60% of graduating class. Entry to colleges is highly competitive and early application is recommended. Technical Colleges: In most cases the high school diploma meets entry requirements for technical programs. However, specific programs may require additional course work and/or a specific level of achievement. Note: Early application to programs is encouraged as programs fill quickly. Contact the school of your choice for specific entry requirements. Military: Military recruiters visit the high school for scheduled visits. Students may sign up to talk with a recruiter. The ASVAB (test) is given to juniors and is also the test that the military uses to help students determine placement and programming. In most cases the military requires a high school diploma to enter their programs. Direct Job: Students have many opportunities to develop skills and talents that will lead directly to a job. A high school diploma serves as entry to many job opportunities.

•SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS•

I. Post Secondary Educational Options For Grades 11 & 12

Minnesota offers students in grades 11 & 12 the opportunity to earn college credit while completing their high school requirements. This opportunity is available to high school juniors and seniors who are in the upper 1/3 of their class and have a 3.0 GPA or better. Students interested in this program need to see the Guidance Counselor and make application in the Spring of the year for enrollment in the Fall. REMINDER that YME is a Project Challenge Site and we offer 16+ credits onsite. With MN West – Granite Falls Campus right here – many opportunities are available to students.

II. STUDENT AIDE (Seniors only)

Multiple opportunities exist for students to learn skills while assisting a teacher or being an office assistant. A student may use one class hour per semester to be a STUDENT AIDE. Each student is responsible for finding a position with a teacher or in one of the offices. Students will earn a PASS/FAIL credit for completing this course. REMEMBER: You may only take one course on a pass/fail grade. For registration purposes students need to state the position they are requesting for and obtain the signature of the teacher and or office they will be working with. III. POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT—ONSITE (Jrs./Srs.)

YME, together with Southwest Minnesota State University, offers college courses on site for Juniors and Seniors who are in the upper 35% of their class. This program is called PROJECT CHALLENGE and allows students to earn college credit while staying on site to complete their high school requirements. Please note: certain restrictions do apply. Dropping a PSEO class after our registration may include you paying for the college credit and/or having a WD (withdraw) grade added to your transcript. Please make careful consideration when selecting a PSEO course.

IV. ITV-Interactive Television

A number of courses are offered via the ITV. We are a ‘receive’ site for a number of courses. Students that choose these courses should be mature and self-directed and reminded that these courses are often year-long.

V. STUDY HALL: Elective

Study halls are supervised by teachers and are QUIET study areas. Students are required to attend every day and to bring work with them. Teachers will assist students during this time. Students may obtain media passes or passes to a teacher’s classroom during this time.

VI. IEP’s/SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES

YME offers a full curriculum for students with special learning needs. Students on an IEP are assigned a case manager who will assist with pre-registration for classes. Check with your case manager to make sure you are enrolling in the courses that best serve your needs.

VII. SENIOR PRIVS

Senior Privileges may be extended to Seniors who have exhibited exemplary academic, attendance, and behavior. Sr. Privs allow Seniors to not attend study hall, go to the front of the line in lunch, leave the building during study hall, be exempt from certain final exams, have an additional college visit day, etc. Requirements for Senior Privs are printed in the student handbook. VII. 504 Plans:

Students that have special learning plans—504’s—should check with their advisor to determine appropriate courses for registration. A 504 Plan is a formal learning plan determined by a team of teachers. Students receiving services are screened by parent/teacher referral and a series of testing information to determine assistance required. In most cases the 504 Plan is implemented in the regular classroom with tutorial needs being met in a directed study. 504 Students receiving credit for guided study will be graded with a Pass/Fail grade.

IX. American Indian Study

YME offers tutorial services for all students who need academic or social assistance. In cooperation with the Upper Sioux community, Native Students have the opportunity to earn special projects credit working with our Liaison. If you enroll in directed study with the Liaison make sure to have a signature indicating credit or non-credit when you are planning your schedule. The grade is Pass/Fail and this will be your study hall.

X. INDEPENDENT STUDY

Students may opt for an independent study/project with teacher permission. General guidelines are that the course is not offered and it is an extended study for a student to work in that area. One period is designated as the independent study hour and students are assigned to the teacher during this hour. For registration purposes you need to need to talk with the teacher and have the teacher initial your request—meaning they are approving your I.S.—no signature/no registration!

XI. ELL - English Language Learners

Students attending YME are from many diverse backgrounds and may need assistance with learning the English language. Talk with the Counselor and/or Principal to access these services. XII. ALC

The YME School District partners with MRVED to offer Alternative Learning opportunities both as a full-time day program and an independent site. Your Principal can assist you regarding ALC. XIII. HISPANIC LIAISON PACT 4 funds a tutor-resource person to work primarily with Hispanic youth. Students may use their study hall (per pass from Liaison) to get academic assistance. The Liaison also assists in the ELL Classroom.

AGRICULTURE #249 Intro to Agriculture Pre-Req: None Grades: 7 ! 9 week Course This class introduces 7th graders to a wide variety of careers not only in agriculture but in technical areas. Students will be introduced to basic ag. Shop work stations, plus environmental habitat. #250 Rural Studies Pre-Req: None Grades: 8 ! 9 week Course This class introduces 8th graders to a wide variety of agricultural related topics including Wildlife Management, Companion Animals, Crop Production, Ag Mechanics and Horticulture. Students will make a corsage, use a cutting torch, arc welder, and complete other activities in the class. FFA will also be a topic of discussion. #251 Ag. Exploration Pre-Req: None Grades: 9 & 10 !Semester Course A class that looks at all the areas that pertain to an Agricultural department. This class will also tie in FFA as a part of the class. Major units of Instruction: Mechanics, Ag. Science, Horticulture, Natural Resources, and Leadership.

#254 Agricultural Science Pre-Req: Phys. Sci. 9 & Biology Grades: 11, 12 !Year Long Course An Ag. class that would give the student a science credit toward their graduation. Major units of Instruction: Forestry, Crops, Soils, Renewable Energy and Animal Science. Note: According to present MN Standards this course will meet science graduation requirements. It may or may not meet the college entrance requirements. #255 Horticulture I Pre-Req: None Grades: 9-12 !Semester Course – can only be taken Sem. 1 Horticulture I is an introduction class to the art and science of plants and their development. Much of the class will be lecture orientated with emphasis on horticulture terms, practices, and technology. The course will also offer hands on opportunities in seed germination and plant development by monitoring and recording plant growth in a lab setting. Floral Design will also be included. Note: This class is a prerequisite to Horticulture II #256 Horticulture II Pre-Req: Horticulture I Grades: 9-12 !Semester Course – can only be taken Sem. 2 Horticulture II is an advanced class that deals with in depth plants and the application of horticultural practices. Much of the class will be hands on learning in a lab setting as well as in our community. This course will target the economic, social, and health benefits of growing plants as well as give the students a chance to seek horticulture as a career.

#258 Small Engines Pre-Req: None Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 !Semester Course Students will learn how to disassemble, rebuild and calibrate a Briggs & Stratton engine. They will also need to find their own small engine that needs work. Major units of Instruction: Safety, maintenance, troubleshooting, carburetion systems, compression systems, and proper use of measuring tools.

#259 Intro to Welding Pre-Req: None Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 !Semester Course Students will learn the basic fundamentals of arc and wire-feed welding. Students need to perform approximately 70 welds, then design and make a project. Major units of Instruction: Safety, arc welding, wire-feed welding, oxy-acetylene cutting, plasma arc cutting and TIG welding #260 Individual Ag Credit: Pre-Req: None Grade 12 !Semester Course Students that are interested in doing articulation agreements with various colleges or enroll in an on-line class. Possible Articulation Agreement: Ridgewater College, SMSU- Marshall, SDSU, NDSU, U of MN, and U of MN Crookston #262 Ag. Leadership Pre-Req: Instructor’s Written Permission Grades 11 & 12 !Semester Course !Instructor permission and signature required This course is designed for FFA members. The content of this course work is to develop leadership, and work skills. #264 Project Based Ag. Pre-Req: Instructor's Written Permission Grades 11 & 12 !Semester Course !Instructor permission and signature required This an independent study course to be taken over the summer under the direct supervision of the Ag. Instructor. It is designed to give students a "hands on" experience in a community based or family based agricultural operation. It requires verification of projects done and the effect those projects have. **NOTE: Ag. 262, & Ag. 264 may be taken for credit ONCE during high school. All require the Ag. Instructor's written approval. All are graded with a letter grade. Ag. Placement Work-Based Learning Grades: 12 !Semester or Full Year Course NOTE: Must Have Instructors Written Permission/Signature on Registration Form.

This course includes a classroom and work place component. The first week of each quarter and the last Tuesday of each quarter will be spent in the Ag Ed classroom. Materials to be covered in the classroom will be a career assessment, letter of application, resume and a quarterly reflection paper. The Work-Based Learning assignments will include completion of weekly work reports, a job contract and quarterly assessment. The student will also make a weekly journal entry, all assignments will be kept in a portfolio in the Ag Ed Classroom. Termination or lack of employment will result in a failing grade. Job hours must be completed but are not limited to the hours that are assigned for this class. Ten hours of work per week are required.

ART •Please note that there may be a nominal class fee charged for art class supplies. #151 Drawing Basics Pre-Req: None Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 !Semester Course Offered Semester 1 This course will cover the elements and principles of art. Also, students will be introduced the many mediums and techniques used in drawing. Themes and subject matter will vary from year to year or from season to season. Independent study will be offered to junior or seniors with consent from art instructor. #152 Multi-Media Pre-Req: None Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 !Semester Course This course will cover the various disciplines of art.. Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Design, and Crafts will be the basic units taught. The class will be open to independent study for juniors or seniors with consent from art instructor. The elements and principles of art will be the main subject base. #154 3-D Art Pre-Req: None Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 !Semester Course Offered Semester 2 This course will cover the different mediums and techniques used in Ceramics, Sculpture, Pottery, Wood carving. The student will create various ceramic pieces ranging from simple bowls to complex functional structures. Students will be introduced to the potter wheel and the numerous functions it offers for creating pottery. Sculpture techniques will be taught with clay, paper mache as the two main mediums in the sculpting process. Wood whittling will be a unit taught with fishing lures as the theme. Independent study will be offered to junior and seniors with consent from art instructor. #156 Independent Study Art Pre-Req: Drawing Grades: 11, 12 !Semester Course This course is offered to the junior or senior student who wishes to advance their learning in the Art field. Expectations will be of a higher standard for project work. The student will choose a particular discipline, Drawing, Painting, 3D, Printmaking, Sculpting, to base their independent study on. Prerequisites: must have taken 2 of the 3 classes offered in the Art curriculum and consent from art instructor. Instructor permission and signature required.

BUSINESS #133 Accounting I (Online Course) Pre-Req: None Grades: 11, 12 !Semester Course Offered Semester 1 Only This course will introduce the student to manual and automated double entry accounting for proprietorship and partnership businesses. Students will learn about the analysis of transactions to determine debits and credits, journalizing transactions, posting to ledgers, taking a trial balance, preparing financial statements, accounts receivable and accounts payable. Students will also study business development. Field trips and class speakers will help students explore career opportunities in business. #134 Accounting II (Online Course) Pre-Req: Accounting I Grades 11,12 !Semester Course Offered Semester 2 Only This independent guided course will introduce the student to manual and automated double entry accounting for partnership and corporate businesses. Students will learn about the analysis of transactions as they relate to a partnership, journalizing transactions, posting to ledgers, taking a trial balance, preparing financial statements, accounts receivable and accounts payable. Additional study of depreciation, inventory, notes, interest and dividends will be included. College Credit: Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a certificate good for 3 technical college credits for Principles of Bookkeeping. Colleges like Minnesota West Technical College (Granite Falls/Pipestone/Jackson) or Inver Hills Technical College or Ridgewater Technical College (Willmar/Hutchinson) and many others will accept the certificate for credit. COMPUTERS/TECHNOLOGY #129 Computer Applications Prerequisite: None Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 !Semester Course offered Semester 1 or 2. *REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION Computer applications will teach the students how to use numerous types of software applications. The skills that they learn will allow them to process data at home and at school. The course focuses on learning the Microsoft Office Suite of applications as well as other predominant software titles. Word processing, database, spreadsheet, presentation, graphic organizer, drawing, and Internet skills will be taught during the semester. This course is a prerequisite for all other technology courses. #130 Advanced Computer Applications Prerequisite: Passing grade in Computer App. Gr: 9-12 !Semester Course offered Semester 1 or 2. Spanish Curriculum !Full Year Courses Students have the opportunity to enroll and complete study in four levels of Spanish. The curriculum incorporates work that promotes skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking Spanish. In addition, the program provides cultural aspects and an understanding of global perspectives. Students may opt for travel to Spain which occurs in the odd-numbered school years (i.e. ’11, ’13)). They must be enrolled in at least second semester Spanish II or higher and be in good academic standing in order to be eligible for the trip. All costs are the individual student’s responsibility. Advanced Accounting continues the concepts taught in Accounting and expands on those concepts. Students will be working with corporations that utilize departmentalized accounting. Students will apply these skills to projects and practice sets. Students will be using online working papers and using accounting software to complete a project. Basic computer skills and email skills are necessary for this course. Students in this course will be required to take a state approved test for Technical Skills Assessment. Advanced Accounting grades are weighted 80% tests and 20% assignments. If your district requires a Semester Exam grade, the Semester Exam grade is an average of all TEST scores from the two quarters.
