THE SPENCER FAMILY STORY:OVER FOUR DECADES OFGENEROSITY AND COUNTING.
To Larry Spencer, the Y is part of his family. He
recalls fond memories of making friends and learning
how to play football at Camp Buddy in the 1940’s.
Like most children, he would eagerly await the summer
months – not because school was over, but because
it always brought the promise of Camp Buddy. To this
day, he stays in touch with his old friends from Camp.
In his words, “I never found a place I liked as much!”
In the 1970’s, Larry and his son, Bill, forged a strong
relationship through the activities of their Indian Guide
tribe. And today, Bill carries on the tradition with his
daughters through Indian Princesses.
Serving on both the Board of Directors and Board
of Trustees of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh
for more than 40 years, Larry was also responsible for
the physical and programming expansion of Camp
Kon-O-Kwee Spencer during the 1990’s.
Why is Larry Spencer so dedicated to the YMCA?
“The Y does great things for families. It makes kids’
lives better and it makes parents’ lives better. It’s
truly a joy!”
Through Larry’s commitment and generosity,
the new Spencer Family YMCA in Bethel Park will
continue to attract families like his for generations
to come. Larry’s wife, Kay, calls the Y “the love of
his life.” Others would agree. It is
his legacy.THE Y IS MUCH MORE THAN SWIMMING LESSONS AND CAMP.
Some of the area’s top-ranked high school swimmers
and soccer players took their first dives and scored their
first goals while participating in sports programs at the
South Hills YMCA. But the Y is so much more than that.
It’s the place where young people learn responsibility
and self-confidence. Where families come together and
communities become stronger. It’s the place where
everyone, regardless of age, income, religion or
background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
And where we all reach out to help others do the same.
