I welcome you to read our latest edition of the YES-magazine Q1-2012 and I do not want to miss wishing you all the best for the upcoming yachting year.
Looking back to 2011 we complete a succesfull year with sales between 36 and 60meter vessels. The conversion design of a 60 meter wooden yacht as well as the presentation of our new 41meter projects with a total of 4 yachts following a sophisticated design line, coming from the base of a very solid heavy duty build warship. Steel hulls of such a high quality you would never find on the market anymore, but exactly that’s the point why you find them in our conversion projects!
With Marlo Plate (Barcelona) and Klara Doert (Monaco) we were able to find additional great local staff who are serving you with YES-standarts around the year.
My new personal assistant Nicole Simunic is a great help me with my paperworks, time scheduling, travel assistance and management to keep me going with no limits.
Following the thesis of expansion rather than recession I am very happy and energetic to start with you full throttle in the next yachting year 2012.
Talking about a brief preview of our current and future projects I would like to mention the full refit and conversion of the 60meter MY
MERLIN which will be finished in summer 2012; the offered 41meter MY LIN NEA which will be ready in just 4-8 months time and last but not least our special sales promotion for MY BAIA MARE bringing her to Qatar, where we are planning to open our waterfront office in one of the top locations of booming Qatar soon.
While being present at the latest boat shows at London, Ft. Lauderdale, Barcelona, METS and the Global Superyacht Forum we are always at the very top of the current global yachting topics.

A collaboration which started some years ago came out as an important step into the middle east with an unique yachting start up chance in Qatar. The location with top earnings and highly interested buyers who love to join the Mediterranean lifestyle on private super- and megayachts.

In the beginning, there was a classical concept of selling a high class Turkish luxury yacht.
The owner turned out into wanting a bigger boat just before the finished construction of this marvelous vessel so the shipyard fullfilling the owners first wish completed this yacht in order to sell it and started designing the even bigger one for the owner.

The team MK-Motorsport is one of the most successful racing teams in the history of the BMW brand. This history is closely linked to the company's founder Michael Krankenberg.The success story began with the start of Michael Krankenberg’s drivers career in 1969. Dozens of victories in the World Touring Car Championship in Germany and Europe were checked, with the result of an invitation as a factory driver for the BMW Junior Team 1977.The successful operations in the sports car world championship 1983 - 1986 on the spectacular BMW M1 were seen as highlights. The victory in the Group B of the "24 hour Le Mans 1986" marked its top. In 1986, Michael Krankenberg retired from his own career as a racing driver. MK-Motorsport had been created as a racing team. The list of successes continues with the third place overall at the Nuerburgring 24 hours in 1987 by over 200 vehicles, the only victory for a private team against the factory teams from BMW, Mercedes, Opel and Ford in the DTM in 1988. In 1992, MK-Motorsport became the most successful team in the German Touring Car Trophy (DTT) up
to 2,500 cc. Between 1996 and 2000 over 20 victories in the German Endurance Championship came together.With the start of the 2010 season, MK-Motorsport celebrated a comeback again in the German Endurance Championship. With five class wins and three group victories MK-Motorsport missed by only 0.8 points behind the championship, but proved so impressive new - old strength to win the championship in 2011.

Born in Germany in the middle of the country Klara detected early that a holiday for her started only as soon as she would see an ocean. She left 25 years ago finally with her now diseased husband to live in Nigeria and Sultanate of Oman. There they took on scuba diving and she graduated as Scuba diving instructor, volunteering at a friends diving school. Many exotic diving locations she ticked off her list since.
Eventually an own diving boat was designed and build in Oman.
A second interest windsurfing was dormant since her husband closed his school in Germany but ended up into the couples wish to sail around the world on a catamaran. In Salalah/Oman the couple put themselves on the short wave radio list of sailing yachtcircum navigators and were often a port of call for visiting vessels who
took this unusual route through the Suez channel & Red Sea.
A first self-build concrete vessel of a Swiss couple, which they visited later in Whangerei/New Zealand where the sailing couple build their home, gave lots of insight views on boat building.
Sailing is her passion and working for passion is her goal.

Another memorable visit was the first Saudi couple (man & woman ! ...unusual for that society in the late 80's). Several sailing turns were made at the Costa Brava / Spain on a catamaran, connected by the owner and Klara's husband via shortwave radio from Nigeria. Later an old wooden schooner through the Agean Islands in June with the worst wind newbee's could experience left Klara deciding circumnavigating is a 'no'. The couple decided to explore the world ...and Klara searched for her favorite island by plane and local excursions. The descision was made after exploring favorites like the USA, Australia and New Zealand that the USA would be the base. Florida with the intracostal canals to start sailing an own vessel with the nearby caribean was the aim. But fate came in a different plan. Klara's husband passed away young and she moved to her favourite South California. Taking on sailing lessons in dingy's from scratch at the Orange County College in US largest small boat harbour and joining, after the Newport Beach sailing club, on Balboa Island. Many beer can races later on large yachts in the barbie and weekend torns to Catalina Island on a friends 46ft. catamaran as well as La Paz to Puerto Vallarta first single night watch on that catamaran gave her more confidence. 2010 she decided to move back to Europe as her parents grew older. Missing the ocean she left Germany after 3 weeks and ended in her business friends villa in Cannes at the Cote d'Azur. To be faced with the largest boat shows of the world, amazing yachts & marina's and the opportunity to join Monaco Yacht Club as active sailor she decided to stay in the area. Looking for a profession to build an existence with her marketing background as an international consultant in the luxurious trade she collaborates with the yacht industry and represents today YES- yachts from her German home region Duesseldorf at the French Riviera and Monaco. Inaugurating boat shows in Monaco, Fort Lauderdale/Florida and the recent London Boat Show besides the world largest marine supply show METS in Amsterdam with an all days attendance at the Global Superyacht Forum were a total jump start for Klara. Also as press and her previous PR experience and love for writing she used her collaboration with the french super yacht magazine "Boat-Attitude" to grab the opportunity to interview world leaders in the super yacht industry like Paolo Vitelli, founder of Benetti / Azimut, Klaas Hakvoort, owner of Hakvoort ship building
in the Netherlands and Robert Braithwaite owner of Sunseeker on the boat shows and learned on a crash course the outlooks and the overall situation the industry is facing. Meetings with boat engine builders MAN, MTU and Caterpillar covered her need to see their arguments and compared them with boat engineers working with these different machines. Excursions to communication on vessels issues during the super yacht forum nurtured her need to see the importance in the age of internet, phone, TV coverage needs of nowadays aera. Being in the international consultancy of international relations for Blue Horizon Stem cells, an American based medical tourism research project with China, she is also on top of the latest methods of stem cell therapy for pure rejuvenation and as an anti-ageing tool. Cutting edge of medicine in our modern age making it available for everybody, not only the rich and famous.So being well connected she got all tools to make her hobby a profession in the worldwide yachting industry.
With YES-yachts Klara is building up refreshing existing connections @ the Cote d'Azur and her American, Asian, middle east, Russian connections to ground a foundation.

Superyacht engines, what are the alternatives?3 high class providersBy Klara DoertMTU and MAN are well-known german brands with an old heritage of engine-building facilities in the southern Germany region of Friedrichshafen (MTU) and Nuremberg (MAN) which provide the most engines for superyachts worldwide.
Klara was asking herself, while visiting numerous larger and smaller yachts: “Which is the best engine and offers the best service for a yacht, including the overhaul of a yacht’s propulsion system?”
The American allround heavy duty power machines building company Caterpilar has only as one segment marine engines.

Sunseeker is the only company worldwide who builds yachts in the range from 40 to 155 ft. Robert Braithwaite pointed out that in the past 2 – 3 years of recession the company invested more than ever. In late 2013 the company will launch their first 155 ft. yacht.
As we all know, the yacht industry is in great difficulties but a slight growth in certain regions of the world looks optimistic. Immerging countries like Brazil, China, eastern European countries and the Middle East compensates for Euro difficulties in Europe. The company alone sold 30 - 40 midsize yachts to China (52, 63, 84ft) as their infrastructure allows no superyachts yet. But the traditional European markets are still the strong hold.
Discretion who buys what size of Sunseeker vessel and an understatement of founder Robert Braithwaite let returning yacht owners purchase also in these controversal times. More and more of the rich and superrich don’t want to be seen as owner of Million Euro/Pound/Dollar luxury vessels. Their crews let the yacht appear and disappear in different parts of the world and the owners are flying in & out under secret coat of discretion, not being seen owing such an expensive ‘bottomless toy’.
There is less and less publicity around the yacht lifestyle and the who is who in the industry, the force of general demand for more environmental consciousness shows a shift, as Robert Braithwaite confirmed.
The close connection with engine suppliers MTU and VOLVO and their engineering towards more fuel consumption conscious environmental impact of these large engines, are used as sales arguments for potential buyers. The newly designed hull in combination with more efficient VOLVO engines deliver a reduction of 1/3 less fuel than in the past. MTU’s new electric drive, the silent technology based on litium batteries, makes it possible to run out of harbor silently.
The charismatic Robert Braithwaite built his first yacht 1968, with a 50 year background in the yachting world. The oldtimer shows still enthusiasm and does on a daily base what he loves most. Asking, if he attends every day the London Boat Show he confirms with great enthusiasm ‘yes’ and that he learns every day new aspects of boats and selling boats! This is the home show for Sunseeker, whereby at other shows he flies in & out for a few days of appearance.
The crowd seen at the launch of the 2 new vessels is showing the importance of Sunseeker and their connection with their
existing and potential owners. The 28 footer is a brand-new project …not an upgrade as most launches in the industry are, Mr. Braithwaite pointed out.
(From the past 322 Mill. Pound turnover the last years beveled down to 289 to 300 Mill. no growth is expected in the next year. The company has grown every year in the past but not in the last 2 years.
Sunseekers philosophy is, if no marginal growth can be achieved, other people markets have to be tackled.)

Simon Clare who told YES-yachts.com that they launched two vessels: v57 and 39 during this years London Boat Show, which Klara was shown after the interview. In 2012 another launch of a 40m yacht is planned.
Clare also confirmed that the Yacht market is in great difficulties, but PRINCESS has growth in Mexico, Brazil, China and Middle East. Regarding Europe the main growth is seen in selling new boats.
PRINCESS is also investing, during this periode of flat growth, into new boat launches… they got in the past 4 years alone 19 new launches of a series of 20 boats in their assortment.
An optimistic future has been declared in the US through the well-known collaboration with VIKING cruises.

The state of the industry in the moment is still fighting worldwide. It’s a moment of distinction. The feel of recovery after the 2008 dip is sensed but nothing is like it was before. Clients are less inclined to spend money for buying a yacht a n d m o r e p r o t e c t i v e a b o u t t h e i r investments. Paolo Vitelli sees the technology of the industry in a constant change - to care more towards the needs of clients. Offering a more effective financial management the Azimut / Benetti group e.g. takes away all problems for owners to finance and manage a yacht. Special since lot’s of yachts are for sale owned by banks. The mission is to look more into small details, fill niches, personalizing boats of customization compared to worldwide brands. He pointed out that the Azimut / Benetti group is similar
like some dutch and german shipyards not for sale. His company is strong in capital as a private owned group and not hold by banks. As a private company they can work more effectively than under pressure of bank takeover like most American competitors. What counts is besides customization of a personalized yacht the continous service after.
The Azimut / Benetti group invest a lot for their professional staff training to offer full-fledge service maintenance packages after the sale took place.
Vitelli founded the Azimut/ Benetti Group over 40 years ago and today presides over an industry-leading company with nine production plants, 2000 employees just at its facilities in Italy and a worldwide sales network comprised of 138 offices in 68 countries.

Acapulco was a distant mysterious and exotic place…To reach it from the air, you had to sort through the explosion of endless colors of parrots, seagulls, flamingos, and papagayos to land on Hornos beach, habilitated as provisional airport at the very edge of the surf.Those who arrived by hydroplane with Pan American’s “flying boats”, landed on the pier, across from the main square.But every traveler, the ones who arrived by plane as those who made their crossing through the old highway (from Taxco) by land, found themselves suddenly faced with the inexpugnable emerald of its jungle and the enigmatic sapphire of its waters.The “Costera” was barely a path which on its way to “El Cerro de la Pinzona”, sur prised the travelers with the sudden white

The reminiscent pastWith the reopening of The Casablanca Hotel, the Art Deco jewel designed and built by Max Lour in 1940, a whole universe of business opportunities arises.Along with the Casablanca, the young and bright Mexican entrepreneurs at the head of the project have found the natural synergy with the also glamorous Club de Pesca today known as the Marina Acapulco, a few hundred meters away on the very shore of the bay.We can only have praise for Ivan Vela thanks to whose efforts the Casablanca was rescued from near destruction at the hands of its negligent latest owner, to recover its full beauty.Vela is also to be recognized as the savior of the enigmatic Jungle mural which thanks to him is now a hallmark of the reborn Art Deco tropical jewel.

The elevator, like a time machine, took its passengers not from one floor to another, but between dimensions; be it to the stars reachable from the Ciro’s, to the mysteries of its Kontiki gardens, or the romance awaiting in its Beach Comber, the first discotheque ever in the whole world.The long gone yet still present piano in its Hall of Palms (Salon Palmeras), seems to play on its own to the accords of “Acuerdate de Acapulco” , the song with which Agustin Lara presented Maria Felix in that very place.On its decks and at the terraces of its only four suites one can still listen to Indio Fernandez and Dolores del Rio; Teddy Stauffer and Heidi Lamar; Orson Wells and the girlfriend he invited to the inauguration of this magic hotel, which those who knew how and why it was built, named “Harding’s Folly”, after its owner’s stroke of inspiration.In my childhood I frequently passed by its palm courts, imagining that

THE JUNGLE MURAL by DIEGO RIVERA.
The Jungle mural at the Casablanca has been the center of polemics for many years. It has been attributed to Diego Rivera (1886/1957) the world renowned muralist who lived one hundred meters away, in the House of Winds (Ekekatlkalli) on the same Pinzona hill.
The mural is a hallmark of the recently rescued Art deco jewel built my Max Lour the famous Swiss architect in the 1940s overlooking Acapulco bay.
The Casablanca today, is like sailing on the maiden voyage of a long lost Titanic that never sank; immune to the rush and hurries of modernity.
The Casablanca gardens are a promise yet to be met… who is waiting for you there?

M/Y MERLIN 63 meter ex-warship minesweeper becomes a superyacht the different steps of conversion In June 2011 I got a call of a very close friend of the industry telling me about a carisimatic gentleman who wants to invest his money into an unusual boat
building project. it should be an ex-navy vessel with the structural option to become a sweet looking private yacht. After evaluating several options a fleet of 4 36 meter all the same vessels was found and we started to design the conversion’s exterior lines of the glamurous rebirth. The idea of a small luxury line by YES-yachts was born. Meanwhile the future owner did not stop to look around for even more exiting project boats and what has been found is the german navy vessel Ex-
Muehlhausen a 63 meter minesweeper ship, built in 1966 and still in full military operation till a few years ago. The target swiped to this vessel and the owner, completely new to yachting, was exitied to start not with one of the
smaller vessels which were purchased before, but right away with the large 63 meter ship. The idea to rebuild all the vessels completely was the aim. One by one.
In order to find the best value for money we discussed the projects with our affiliated shipyards in Germany, Turkey, Spain and Egypt. After several offers we
the choice felt on the Egyptian shipyard due to their navy know how, their equipment and last but not least their unique pricepoint. So the first target was to get the vessel going! The ship had to be registered
first (going through discussions about the vessel being an arm or not) and after the upgrade of the navigational systems, the security setup, engine overhauls and generator checks & repairs as well as the upgrade of the electrical system the vessel got its Cook Island flag with no problems due to the perfect work of the engineers aboard. After a publicity generating first sea trial with a hart touch of the harbors sea wall by the back of the vessel the problem had to be figured out why the steering system did not work 100% even that hassel had been taken quickly.

M/Y MERLIN the historical wooden vessel - gets a fully wooden upgrade
Step 2 At the point of purchase the vessel could not have all the before mentioned work to be done. We had to transfer the ex-navy ship by strong trawlers into a Kiel Shipyard for making her seaworth again. This transfer did not happen incognito - ex-Muehlhausen, now named MY MERLIN, has been in the newspaper from day of the transit. Bloggers and private shipseekers reported about the transit, the docking-touch rumours and all available facts around. So MY MERLIN got a real celebrity in german local newspapers and radio stations around Kiel.
The engine overhaul turned out to become a little tricky due to their massive 16 cylinders MAYBACH engines built in 1966 which have very special screws and tools to be used for working on them. The safari to find
these tools turned out as a time consuming and impossible mission. So to cut the edge our engineer aboard started to build the needed tools himself.
Being an all wooden boat structural checks have been made before buying the vessel and the fully complete maintainance journal of the German
navy showed each and every screw ever been purchased used or existing just for spare parts. Millions and millions of Euros have been invested over the last years for maintaining the vessel in perfect shape and fully operational for an eventual military or war operation. So visiting the vessel we found it very puristic and a little old school styled, but in 100% high quality heavy duty build
condition.
So during the process of figuring out the operational documents our design team started the work on the exterior overall rebuild design and the interior floor plans.
Working with such a carismatic toy full of history my colleagues decided to stay in their hotel as planned, but me and my close friend
decided to stay aboard during my visits at the berth in the shipyard at Kiel. We had hardly electric power to go throu all the cabins aboard, but the engineers figured it out in a second. So sleeping in the first officers lounge I got my ideas for the future floor plan. Lots and lots of small military cabins needed to become spacious owners and guest cabins.
Now as you see in the attached pictures the ship arrived already in Egypt, after a long and hard sea trial making it perfectly with no hassels all the way down to Egypt.At the shipyard the conversion has already begun. First of all after the refit of the overall teakdeck the wooden bulkwalk has been installed. Now the main deck gets a massive extension and 2 additional decks will be realized soon. Already this summer, just about 6 months later the complete conversion will be finished and MY MERLIN will start her new career as a private luxury yacht. We will keep you posted in the next issue of this YES-magazine.
