Year 9 Core and Elective Program 2020

Year 9 Course Selection Core Subjects In Year 9, all students will study Core English, Maths, Science, Health, Physical Education, Humanities and Pastoral Care. Electives Program Students will also be able to choose from a range of The Arts, Technology and Language electives. Electives run for a Semester or half a year. Students will complete two electives in Semester One – one from The Arts and one from the Technology Learning Areas. During Semester Two students will complete two different electives one from The Arts, one from the Technology and/or one from the Languages (Indonesian) Learning Areas. During the course selection process students must choose electives for the entire year. Electives may incur a charge up to $42.00 depending on material costs.

ELECTIVE SUBJECTS

When completing your course selection form you will choose 3 electives per semester.

• Indicate on your elective sheet 1 to 3 – 1 being the subject you would most like to do and three being your least favorite.

Remember though, that you will only complete two of these.

• Number your choices in order of preference. • Every effort will be made to put students into classes based on the order of

Year 9 Textiles will see students designing and creating their own

Textiles products using a range of hand and machine sewing

techniques and fabrics. Along the way they will learn how to develop

products and draft patterns like industry professionals. Students also extend their

knowledge of how to use Sewing Machines and Overlockers. They will Tie Dye

(Shibori) and sew their own zippered pencil case and learn to make items of clothing.

Students will also increase their fashion illustration skills and knowledge of fabrics, to

design a variety of textile products. Students are required to use personal protective

equipment and wear school approved footwear for all practical classes in this subject.

Product Design and Technology – Dressmaking

In the textiles industry, Dressmaking refers to the

process of making any clothes from patterns, not just

dresses! Year 9 Dressmaking will see students

designing and creating their own clothing items. Along

the way they will learn how to illustrate and assemble

patterns like industry professionals. Students also learn

how to use Sewing Machines to a more advanced level.

Students will deconstruct men’s shirts to analyse how high quality projects are made,

then reassemble the shirt into a new product of their choice.

Projects include comfy shorts, knitted beanies and repurposed clothing from shirts. At

all stages, students are encouraged to make their work their own by maintaining a

design folio of ideas and research. Students are required to use personal protective

equipment and wear school approved footwear for all practical classes in this subject

Product Design and Technology - Wood

In Year 9 Product Design and Technology – Wood,

students will expand on the skills and knowledge that

they have learnt in year 8. Students will have the

opportunity to learn more complex joining techniques

and will be introduced to basic electrical equipment to

help with the manufacture and finish of their products. Students will be required to

research different styles of a product suggested by the teacher in order to create their

own products. Students will be required to submit a final folio alongside their

completed work that shows their understanding of the design process. Students are

required to use personal protective equipment and wear school approved footwear

for all practical classes in this subject.

Product Design and Technology – Metal

In Year 9 Product Design – Metal, you will be introduced to sheet metal and sheet aluminum. You will have the opportunity to learn cutting, folding and joining techniques and will be introduced to basic hand tools and basic electrical equipment to help with the manufacture and finish of your products. You will be required to complete a set project as an introduction to the subject. You will then need to draw a basic design of the chosen product to use as reference whilst manufacturing the chosen product. You will be required to submit a final folio alongside your completed work that shows your understanding of the design process.

It is expected that you will complete a minimum of two projects for assessment during the semester. You are required to use personal protective equipment and wear school approved footwear for all practical classes in this subject.

Food Studies

Food Studies involves students studying how food is produced. In first semester,

students will look at how food can be made safely while developing their practical

skills and adapting foods to meet their needs. Students follow the design process to

create food items and look at how everyday factors influence our food choices. In the

second term, students study how food is cooked and the reactions that occur when

heat is applied. Students will make food products such as smoothie bowls, souvlaki

and meringue. Students should choose this subject if they are interest in a career in

food processing or culinary arts.

Students are required to use personal protective equipment and wear school

approved footwear for all practical classes in this subject.

Food Studies - Food and Good Health:

This subject explores on how food influences our health as well

as ways to achieve good health through proper nutrition.

Students create healthy and nutritious dishes to build up a

repertoire of recipes they can make to support good health.

The psychology of food is also examined, and students discover how food marketing

and health promotion influences food choice. Students use a range of food selection

models such as the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating in order to create a healthy

diet. Students should choose this subject if they are interested in a career in nutrition

or a health-based pathway.

Students are required to use personal protective equipment and wear school

approved footwear for all practical classes in this subject.

Computing –

Programming and Game Development:

In Year 9 Programming & Gaming students will develop techniques used during the

development of programs and computer games. Students learn basic principles of

game development and programming languages. Students will be given a range of

resources and software tools to enhance their knowledge and skills when

developing digital solutions. Students engage in the four processes of analysing,

designing, developing and evaluating when completing assessment pieces.

Students will create games using various software such as Scratch, Visual Studio

and Game Maker. They will use their own files to create original games. Students

progressively move towards complete user interactivity in the development of the

game whilst incorporating problem solving skills along the way. At the end of this

course students will have a knowledge level that will lead to further IT based

subjects.

Computing - Web Design and Animation

In Year 9 Web Design & Animation students will develop a range of skill sets. Students

will be given a range of resources and software tools to enhance their knowledge and

skills when developing digital solutions. Students engage in the four processes of

analysing, designing, developing and evaluating when completing assessment pieces.

Students will form a website in Adobe Dreamweaver using HTML code, various design

features and properties. Students will also develop an animation using Adobe Animate

and incorporate this into their website. At the end of this course students will have a

knowledge level that will lead to further IT based subjects.

Science, Techology, Engineering and Mathematics – (STEM)

STEM is a student-led subject, where students are provided with a problem that they aim to find the solution to through research, design, problem solving, construction, collaboration, data analysis, evaluation, and team and independent work.

Students will have opportunities to explore STEM in various ways, for example, STEM Competitions, Robotics, Drones, Coding, Rocketry, TinkerCAD, 3D printing, Raspberry Pi, Aerodynamics, Bridge/Car/House/Plane Design, Spaghetti Machine Construction, Electronics, Environmental Solutions, Mission to Mars, and many other possibilities.

Students who select this subject will develop a growth mindset, so will embrace challenges, persist in the face of setbacks, see effort as a path to mastery, and find inspiration in the success of others, so must be willing to take on these challenges.

STEM provides the opportunity for students to develop life skills that future employers are looking for, no matter what their chosen career path.

Digital Art along with associated digital technologies. Students will use Adobe

Photoshop along with its unique imaging design effects. They will explore a range of

computer enhancing, editing and transforming methods. Tasks will provide the

opportunity to explore individual and personal themes and directions. Students will

develop both a Digital Portfolio and a Hardcopy ‘Paper’ Portfolio, both of which

document the developmental process of their ideas, finished work and personal

reflections. Competencies gained in this unit are used in a whole range of Design

Industries, including the areas of Art, Graphics, Screen, Animation, Games and

Multimedia.
