Year 6 West African Music The BIG QUESTION – How is music an important part of the African culture? African Drumming Djembe The most well-known drum from West Africa Three different sounds can be played by using different parts of the hand and different parts of the drum Tone – taut sound played on the rim Bass notes - bouncing hand - middle of the drum Slap – flat hand on the middle / edge drum Donno - the talking drum Drums have tradi@onally been used to communicate. Different pitches can be made by squeezing the strings on the outside of the drum and a rhythm Played with a hooked s@ck the drum rhythms carry across the land to communicate emergencies as well as being used to accompany dancing for various occasions. The Master Drummer leads a drum ensemble by improvising flamboyant solos and giving cues for the ensemble to play a Timeline aEer the solo. Polyphonic texture – Many sounds layered together. Complex rhythms combined together create cross rhythms. SyncopaFon – where the emphasis is not on the main beat crea@ng an off-beat effect. African Vocal Music Harmony Different parts sung at the same @me usually forming chords. A cappella Vocal music sung in harmony without accompaniment. Call and Response A leader sings the call, a group responds. Pentatonic Five note paLern or scale forming a melody. UlulaFng – a high pitched long sound combined with a rhythmic movement of the tongue back and forth to express joy, sorrow or celebra@on. Instrumental music Mbira / Thumb piano Metal strips over a piece of wood or hollow gourd are played with both thumbs. Balofon – Xylophone style instrument playing repeated paLerns (Os@na@). Wooden bars over hollowed out gourds sound chamber. Kora – A harp like instrument made with fishing line strung over a hollowed out gourd. The strings are tuned and plucked to make gentle but complex paLerns. Agogo Bells Two different size metal bells cut through the texture of the drum ensemble, giving a strong lead to the rhythm. Shekere A shaker made from a hollowed out gourd with beads / seeds or shells strung on the outside. Rhythms are made by shaking and moving the beads, and oEen performers dance at the same @me. African drum music is fast, mulF-layered, loud and oPen accompanies dancing Music brings the community together and is central to family celebraFons Tuned instruments are used to accompany solo singing African music is oPen complex and syncopated (off beat /cross rhythms) The role of the Master musician is handed down through generaFons Instruments are made from organic materials; wood, animal skin, seeds, gourds and occasionally metal. Hollowed out gourds are used for many instruments.
