    17th November 2011Dear Parents/Carers,

I am writing to share some information that will be important for all students currentlystudying Media in Year 12 at Park High School.

Media Studies is a rewarding subject to study but as with most creative subjects whichrequire a significant proportion of practical work, it can be time-consuming and does attimes require some extra commitment outside lessons, particularly in the build-up to a

coursework deadline. It is important that students organise their time effectively in orderto achieve their best, and they are encouraged to talk to their Media teachers as soon aspossible if they are struggling to keep up, or if they have problems managing their time, particularly when things start to get very busy towards the end of this term.

All Media students are involved in the Foundation Portfolio (coursework) project whichwill be completed in February 2012. The students will work in groups on a film openingproject using sound and video. This is the only coursework project the students will beinvolved in during the AS course, and is worth 50% of the total marks. The students willneed to work closely in their group to shoot and edit their film to a high standard. Tomaintain this high standard, the groups will be expected to film their footage on locationoutside school, possibly during free time in the week but mainly during weekends. To ensure that the work is shared equally and that all the students are able to beinvolved, they will be able to borrow school equipment during the project to completesome off-site filming as long as they sign an Equipment Release Form and havebrought back the reply slip at the bottom of this letter.

They will be filming between now and the end of the second week back after Christmas;the time after Christmas will probably be needed to reshoot.

Students may also be expected to film on weekdays including during the double lessonsand/or the triple lessons, though if they are not on location, they need to be in schoolworking on the research and planning and / or post-production of their work. Allshooting dates must be approved by us in advance. Students are not allowed to beoff-site unless previously arranged and agreed with us. They must be back fortheir next lesson. We expect the students to behave sensibly, maturely and safelywhen out on a shoot. They should also seek permission from the relevant people whenfilming in public places. As you will appreciate, part of this process involves a steeplearning curve in organisation and problem-solving.

May I also take this opportunity to remind you that all students record all their work ontheir blogs and that you are therefore able to check on their progress? The blogs willthen be moderated by external examiners in the summer.

I am also enclosing your son/daughters Assessment Sheet as it stands at present. Please may I ask that you add a parental signature to show that you have seen it and

discussed it with your child. This will be sent home again twice before the end of theproject. It should be returned as soon as possible to allow me to add new comments.

Finally, the students will be using school equipment off-site andtherefore need to agree to take responsibility for any equipmentborrowed; they need to look after it, use it safely and return it as

they found it, fully re-charged for another group to use.Consequently, we ask that to read, sign and return the reply slipbelow to acknowledge that should your son/daughter damage anyof the equipment, you will pay for repairs or the cost of areplacement.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the contents of thisletter or any concerns throughout the course of this year.

    Yours faithfully,

    Helene OSheaCo-Ordinator for KS5 Media [email protected]://thrilleropening1011.blogspot.com
